    After the square step:
    1. Take the square to the back
    2. Select ALL -> Merge -> Direct Selection Tool (A), select the square (NOT the Line art) and press DELETE
    3. Select ALL -> Isolate Selected Group -> Magic Wand (Y) -> Select the line art -> Group
    4. Exit the Isolated Group -> Select the line art -> Ungroup
    5. Create New layer -> Select line art -> Drag the "Small square" to the new layer.
    (For step 5, make sure you only select the line art, otherwise it will show a "big square" in the layer options)
    After almost 2hrs finally managed to do this step. if I missed anything feel free to comment below.
    P.s Give it a thumbs up so other people can see it!!

      I'm guessing is because every line needs to be touching, if there's even a tiny line that isn't touching, it could be the problem.

      Try it again with simple drawings, a fruit, a chair, etc. once you get the hang of it you can try the space monkey or your personal design.

    To anyone still confused by what's happening at 13:57 and later: Merge the background rectangle with the lineart in the Pathfinder menu. Then pick the DIRECT SELECTION TOOL (white arrow, not the default selection tool), click on the outer area that you want deleted, and hit delete. THEN you can go back to the Selection Tool (black arrow), click on the lineart, right click, and Isolate Selected Group. Now you can pick the Magic Wand (0 tolerance), select the lineart with the wand, right click, and Group. Exit Isolation Mode (either back arrow on the top bar or just double click), create new layer, Ungroup lineart from old layer. With the lineart still selected, just move it to the new layer (either cut + paste, or literally move the colored square like shown in the video). NOW you've got your base colors on a different layer and lineart on a different layer.
    Took me a while to figure this out since the video skips way ahead of the audio at that point in this tutorial and some keyboard shortcuts are not called out as they are performed. But great video and excellent tutorial! Thank you.

      Nuck Gore The Magic Wand: it isolate's the line art ( the black contour) from the the rest the fill color ( the blue one). After you separate them, create a new layer and drag the line art ( the black cotour) with your mouse into it.

    I'm not sure if someone's mentioned this before but you can save time using the blob brush tool instead of having to go through the merging process. You can get the same results with fewer steps involved. and you can also save time using the smooth tool in place of the pen tool to make your lines cleaner. Just a personal preference but great tutorial all the same :D

  • @GeekdOut

    To isolate the line art from the background color, select the black line art (magic wand - tolerance 0) > group > create new layer > click and move the blue box in the layers palette up to the newly created layer and it should be finished.

      ”select your object and press shift+ctrl+[
      or rightclick it -> arrange -> send to back ” like Joeoe said,
      Then click merge on the pathfinder. Double-click on the group to access the contents. Select the black parts with the Magic Wand tool. Ctrl+G to group those together. Exit the main group. Right-click > Ungroup. And then select the lineart group(black parts grouped before). Look to your layers toolbar. See that little box now that you have the object selected? Drag it to a new layer on top.
      There you go! ^_^

      +designioustimes I still hate this part, because the video and the audio don't match in that extreme important section. The step by step info is ok, but I'm not even sure if "Select the black parts with the Magic Wand tool." worked on my artwork. I managed to get abou 70% of my artwork covered with the blue shape, the rest stayed white and I don't know why it didn't cover 100% of the background lineart. Do all shapes have to be closed?

    Well now I see why I should've been using Illustrator, I mean do you even know how hard it is to get the exact same quality result with Photoshop? You need to use something like 6-8 pixel wide brushes for over 6k pixel documents and do the outlines of the lines, then fill them with your brush.Takes LOTS of practice to master and even then it is really really time consuming.. So, thank you for this tutorial, very clear, explains exactly what need to be explained, straight to the point and good quality. Gratz.

As a traditional artist, with increasing demands and necessity to provide designs in a multitude of digital formats, your video has been the most useful and informative video on this topic I have come across. Your video has helped me branch out my Sketchbook Pro and Photoshop complex digital pieces and feel confident to start creating more efficient vector based wok. oh gosh, this is the last question i promise!
    Now im on the bit where i add my shadows with the brush.
    On your video you do did it without interfering with the black strokes.
    To try and get this effect I did this process:
    Select the line art
    Select >> Same >> FIll Color
    Make new layer
    Drag the colored square on the right side of the layers palette, from current layer to new.
    I still didnt manage to paint underneath/around the black?

    Holy crap guys!!! I cant do the ungroup part at 14:57!!!! So
    1. Rectangle
    2. Send rectangle to back
    3. Merge
    4. Delete surrounding rectangle
    5. Isolate Line art and shape
    6. Decrease magic wand tolerance and select Line with magic wand
    7. Group
    8. Exit group
    9. Ungroup
    10. THEN THE PART WHERE SHE CLICKS THE BOX THINGY AND SEPARATES LINE ART AND FILL COLOR DRIVES ME INSANEEEE.
    Halp!

    For anyone having trouble filling their drawing with the first color: there can't be any gaps in your line-art; in other words, your shape needs to be closed all around. Find any gaps on the perimeter of your shape and use the direct selection tool to drag the anchor points and close them (this can still be done after you merge).

      +Bruce Wayne Drawing like any other art is not about the technicalities and how close to reality it may look like. You can design beautiful art with ugly characters. you just have to work hard at it and develop a style in the process. The style itself is what makes ppls distinguish you and like your art for its originality. Passion is essential though. Without passion, people tend to give up or conform along the way. It's never too late. I'm learning programming now, and I have big plans for the knowledge i will attain. :D

The Pathfinder option "merge" does not give the desired effect for me - but she is saying, that she is using this option?? At around 14:00 the rectangle disappears and leaves only its fill on the line art. HOWWWW???!

    • @InkyEU
      @InkyEU  10 років тому +4

      After adding the blue fill, send it backwards and merge the two together (line art + fill). Then select the outer part of the fill with the Direct Selection tool (A) and delete it. Afterwards, ungroup the resulting merged shapes, select the line art with the Magic Wand tool (just the black parts), group them together and drag them to a new layer in the Layers tab. Hope this was helpful, cheers!

    • @InkyEU
      @InkyEU  10 років тому +1

      Make sure you have both the line art and the rectangle selected when merging. Also, make sure the line art is expanded before merging. Afterwards, select the outer part of the rectangle that's left with the DIRECT SELECT TOOL and then delete it. :) Cheers and thanks for watching!

      designioustimes Thankyou very much! it worked :) but one more question. When it worked everything else was all a blueish colour but when i merged the triangle it didnt do the face! is there any way to fix that?

    • @InkyEU
      @InkyEU  10 років тому

      Make sure you have the line-art completely closed. It only fills the shapes that are completely isolated by line-art from the exterior. If that's too much work just add the fills manually beneath the line-art, it won't make much difference visually, but might be faster than going back and filling all the gaps in your line-art if you have any.

      Object>Expand Appearance
      (Convert your lineart to shapes)
      Solid Fill color with the Rectangle Tool, or any
      shapes that will cover the area you want to color,
      place on top of the lineart...
      Right Click> Arrange> Send to Back
      Select Everything> Open Pathfinder Panel> Merge>
      Right Click> Isolate Selected Group
      Left Click on the area you don't want and DELETE.

    this is amazing, thank you for showing us how to do this kind of stuff, I finished an associate's degree and feel like I have no skills in illustrator, the way you did this was brilliant with the techniques I like how you created shapes from the open spaces. I will be using this as a guide until I master this style

      Cameron Ketch I've only owned one and that was the cheap one I bought a few years back so I can't really make an recommendations. Here is the one that I got www.amazon.com/Huion-Inches-Tablet-Graphics-Drawing/dp/B00DTPYWBG/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1459798555&sr=8-2&keywords=pen+tablet and it works fine and does what it is supposed to. If you want to spend more money for better quality I'm sure you can find something,

    You don't have to duplicate the merged layer, you can merge the rectangle and the expanded line art just once and then using the Direct Selection Tool delete the exterior shape. Ioana uses a lot of shortcuts, that's why it seems to go so fast. :)
    You can indeed close the lines off with the Direct Selection Tool and repeat the rectangle process and it should work fine.

  • @Jiiive
    @Jiiive 7 років тому

    Creating a rectangle and sending it to back, then merging the shape with the selected line art in pathfinder results in something quite different than whats pointed out here in the video.

    The method i use to color, i combined what i learned from two other artists... I do:
    1. Select All [Line Work] after i make a copy of the line work. Then object expand appearance
    2. then live color (i think) make then expand.
    3. merge
    4. square color
    But i use an artistic brush but the Calligraphic brush seems so much better to use
