My son had one of his friends over one day and they were talking about things parents say and this young boy said his dad always says this as he or his brothers and sisters are leaving the house. "Remember who you are and to whom you belong" in other words you are a part of this family and you are a child of God. I thought this was very wise and now I use this with my boys.
When we were young boys and would say we "can't" do whatever we were supposed to do, my friends mom, Christine, would say, " can't never do anything". My house love yalls channel, it is a blessing, celebrate on...
Talking about clothes reminds me of our long ago church picnics. It was late July, but all the old farm men would be wearing overalls, straw hats and long sleeved shirts buttoned up tight. They would line up against the shady side of the school building and smoke pipes. To this day, the slightest whiff of pipe tobacco takes me right back. God is so kind to give us a way to go back and visit old times❤
You being you Tipper, I thought you'd like this one too. I found it written on an old wooden match box under our house in Western Australia. "When the world wearies and society does not satisfy, there is always the garden" We made a garden bench and wrote the saying on it to remind us and those who come after to appreciate the wonder of the garden 🥰🥰
Love these sayings! Love this one, Remember who you are, and whose you are. As believers, we really need to remember who we belong to in this life and the next life to come. ❤️
My sweet Dad, (may he always RIH🙏), had lived a rough life in the Over-the-Rhine district of Cincinnati, Ohio, during the 50’s-60’s. He moved my Mom, my sister and I out of Cincinnati for a better life. He became a Christian several years before he passed away in 2013. He had always loved his family and was so incredibly proud of all of us! 🥰🥰🥰 He would always say, ‘Ooh!!! If I was any happier, I’d be two people!’❤❤❤❤
Glad you got some rain! So good for those beautiful gardens. 😊 When I was young, my mom used to tell me "Don't criticize anyone else until you clean up your own backyard". 🙃
When my aunt would sneeze she would say “here I am”. She told us that in the old days people believed when you sneezed your soul left the body so she would say “ here I am” so her soul would know where her body was…
First of all I received a membership from someone and I want to thank the person who gifted it. “Scat Tom your tails on fire was a variation from my childhood. Also Ms Tipper a dryer sheet near your chest will help keep gnats away. I’m physically disabled and home bound and I love your visits and also the girls. My name is Ellen and I appreciate all of your prayers.
I absolutely LOVE “Don’t Close Your Eyes”, by Keith. It is sad that he left us so soon. Merle Haggard is one of my all-time favorites! All the old country singers, I miss those who have left us but I’m thankful we still have their music.
We always said "Gesundheit" when someone would sneeze, as I am German and thats all we knew. Love the words of wisdom. Really enjoy Monday mornings with you live. Thanks Tipper!
Some of the best words of wisdom I ever heard came from my daddy. Kids & teenagers are always trying to be like everybody else. He said, "You do not have to conform to this world." In my later years I realized how right he was.
I really enjoy your videos, I'm not from Appalachia but a lot of the things you share remind me of my family when I was coming up, when someone would sneeze my Grandma would say "scat kitty cat" I said it at school when I was in about the 3rd grad and some mean ole kids made fun of me for it LOL .When my Aunt didn't want to have to do something she's say " I'd rather watch the grass grow" . When I was a kid my Papa would always say you can't run from your troubles because where ever you go, there you are. meaning you're probably the root of the trouble. So many of these I sayings are so timeless and it doesn't matter where you're from. I look forward to these every Monday. Thank you.
My grandmothers would both say "scat" after us kids would sneeze. They were both from Arkansas but their parents had roots in Kentucky and Alabama. I'm fascinated with languate too and how it migrates with people.
Tipper I never go to bed without watching you. Your videos are always so interesting . I love to hear you talk about your garden. Talk about Matt wearing shorts. My husband wore shorts and then one summer he just didn’t put them on. But he didn’t like to wear them as he was working in his garden. I don’t know why. I’m glad you got some rain. God is so good. We are really blessed, all of us. I send my love.
Want to share a piece of wisdom. “Trust in God but tie up your horse.” God is good, but we always must do our part. Love from this little part of the world. ❤🌎🇨🇷
I used to always tell my children, be the solution and not the problem. My husband never wore shorts either. Keith Whitley was one of our favorite singers. I remember nursing my second newborn baby and watching The Ralph Emery show with Keith Whitley on it, and he and Lorrie Morgan had just had their baby also. Merle Haggard will always be my favorite.
Hey Tipper, great words of wisdom sayings. I don't believe I ever heard the scat cat when someone sneezed. I'm glad to hear you have another book signing. It would be nice to see some video footage from that. Continued prayers for your family. ❤
Tipper ! You have the most beautiful skin ! I worked in dermatology for years in my younger years! I, as a redhead, wish I paid attention to the sunscreen lectures we gave our patients! No sunblock in the 70s and 80s, and oh my …. The 90s and …. So at 51 next month, I was blessed with my first skin cancer next month to my eye. Big surgery with barely a scar. Thank the good Lord. I can now expect more of the same to pop up. I have a hat, sunblock, and a linen shirt with sleeves to walk my beagle Joey😂 I have turned into my mother with the giant sunglasses I was so embarrassed she wore when I was young😂 For a gardener, you have zero sun damage! Good genetics play a role too 😉
I have brown sun damage from many years in the sun. The tan fades every winter but the sunspots are forever. I recently was told that collider oil would fade them and coconut oil. I have got the coconut oil if it doesn’t work at least I will smell good. I would have never thought that you have sun damage . Tipper I think you are so pretty.
I enjoy all of your wonderful posts, Tipper, and especially this one! In the area where I was raised, the “sayings” were very much like the ones you mentioned. I always have loved hearing people say them, too. My grandmother knew tons of them and I really enjoyed hearing her say them. As a child, I didn’t realize how much truth was in most of them!
My brother would always say “God gave you two ears and one mouth for a reason.” In other words, listen more than you run your mouth. My grandmother would say “Scant cat” when we would sneeze.
My dad always wore over-alls and a long sleeved shirt. Even in the dead of summer. We always made sure that he had plenty of water in case he hot too hot. My Granny would say "scat cat, your tail's on far'.
Yes, my mama, who was raised in Mississippi, always said “scat” when we sneezed. It’s so interesting to me that we share a lot of the same traditions and words.
Hello Tipper. Although I don't comment much.. I listen A LOT! Thank you for always sharing these wonderful sayings, little kernels of truth and wisdom. I truly enjoy these, along with your wonderful readings. Have a Blessed week!🙏☕🙏
My husband, when I get out done with something he would blurt out sew buttons on ice cream,it just made me laugh, and that one about going to London to see the Queen, it's a nursery rhyme I believe I am enjoying your vlog,God bless ☮️
My grandma was from Kentucky and always said "Scat" or "Scat Cat" when people sneezed. "Nervous as a cat in a room full of Rocking Chairs" was another favorite of hers. She died in 1994 and I miss her every day.
Thinking about these sayings from the past makes me smile, but I also tear up, missing the people who are gone. It seems like there was a saying for everything and every situation. Maybe putting feelings, instruction, and correction into this form softened the blow by depersonalizing what was being said, turining it into general truths. You could lift someone up or bring them down with the correct saying and with carefully innocent delivery. It is also easier to remember the lessons with catchy sayings instead of a lecture.
Sorry that I missed your live video this week. I hope that you enjoyed your cucumber and green beans! My dad who is 76 doesn't wear shorts either! 😊 Praying for Corie... baby boy will be here soon!
Please take us on a tour of the bookstore that you're talking about!!! It sounds like a lot of fun!!!! Here's a word of wisdom, don't get bigger than your britches. Love you💖!!
Love the words of wisdom. We all need things to make us think more and perhaps talk less. Love your plum foolish about Appalachia T-shirt Tipper. We are plumb foolish about you, you and your family add precious substance to our days!
Sometimes I would smart back when I was a little girl if I didn’t like what my parents were saying or what they were telling me to do. My dad would say “ Little girl, don’t write a check with your mouth that you butt can’t cash.” I cleaned it up because he didn’t say butt. Lol. Another take on one you mentioned was from my mom. She would say “If wishes were horses, beggars would ride.” I love when you share all of these little pearls of wisdom. It’s fun to remember back when we were little or remember things our parents and grandparents would say. Stay cool. Be well & take care.
Hi from over the mountain in Knoxville! I got that little rain with a short storm like you did and I was likewise happy - I only have flowers, but they enjoyed the drink! Love your visits; keep up the great work!! Hi to Granny and the girls!
We love you in our family. My Father is from Asheville and he loves to hear the sound of your voice. He is very old and 😢 well you know....thank you so much for these videos
@CelebratingAppalachia his name is Edward Jenkins Wilson. Buncome county HS 1952. The USMC and Korea then WCU and NYC where he met my Mother. The rest is history. Our history
@@Casperthefriendlyghost82 Thank you for sharing a bit of his history. Please tell him I am thankful for his service!! Maybe we are related since my Wilson great grandfather Ben Wilson came from Madison County 😊
@CelebratingAppalachia last time I was there visiting 2 months ago I played him the video of you and your beautiful daughters ( I have a crush on the older one) about the language word quiz. He really liked it. I wish I could video call with you next time just so he can hear your pretty voices. Please 🙏
@CelebratingAppalachia oh no...yes we are related. Does this mean I can't marry your eldest daughter? God, we're cousins?????? Awwwwww....phoney! Lollll I'm so happy that we are distant family relations. I will be driving down the Asheville because I need to buy him a grave plot and buy a crypt & headstone
Hi Tipper! This is Cheryl Hutson. Just wanted to tell you I am reading a book by John Parris called These Storied Mountains. There is a chapter about corn and how it was used back in the old days and it made me think of you and Matt. It is a wonderful read if you haven’t already read it.
My husband's family always said "Scat Cat" when somebody sneezed. My sister and I used to laugh and say somebody in their family must have been allergic to cats. Now years later I found a lot of their sayings came from their wonderful Appalachian Mammaw.
My mom always said gesundheit when somebody sneezed. I always enjoy your videos, Tipper. You mentioned Keith Whitley. He was my absolute favorite back in the day. I still enjoy listening to him. Such a talented man gone way too soon. My dad never wore shorts either. He always wore the Dickies work clothes. Btw, I'm in Pennsylvania. A lot of your sayings are ones that we say, too. 🙂
Grandpa always had his long sleeve blue shirt and undershirt under it. Bibb overalls he always kept sleeves buttoned up and if it got real hot he would unbutton the top button. At night he would take off his shirt and his hands were brown but arms was white as snow ❄️. I wore shorts around him a couple times when younger. He didn't appreciate it lol. Great video as always. God bless Grandma always said don't get above your raising and always remember where you came from.
I love your Monday lives and words of wisdom. I don’t respond quickly enough to get in on the conversations. I remembered something my granddaughter came home from preschool saying that she no doubt got from a teacher, “You get what you get and you don’t throw a fit.” Good advice for any age.
Hi Tipper! Watching your video, when you mentioned adding Lavender and Peppermint essential oils to your bug deterrent spray, you questioned if they even did anything or not, and I became curious myself. So, I looked it up online and found several handy websites that confirmed that, yes, Lavender repels fleas, flies, mosquitoes and ticks, and Peppermint repels ticks, spiders, roaches, moths, flies, fleas, beetles, and ants. So yes, they definitely helped improve your bug spray! 😊
My husband works as a hydro journeyman and he’s never worn shorts except OCCASIONALLY on vacation but I could count on 1 hand the times. I’ve never seen any of our fathers and grandfathers wear them either! Some of our menfolk also wear long sleeves yea-round.
My dad never wore shorts other than swimming either- and we always called them lighting bugs also- I live in Colorado which doesn’t have them. I miss them - but will be taking a trip to visit relatives - hope to see some then. Yep- we would say ( Gazuthieght) if I am spelling it right - which I know I’m not. Thanks Tipper ❤️& Prayers
I would often call a teacher "mom" accidently because of their closeness and influence on us kids. Along the lines of "remember who you are," I often have told my kids "remember who you belong to" meaning God. In order for them to think about it in the face of temptation.
My father always wore long sleeves and long pants. In the summer he wore the under shirt that had no sleeves. He said it kept you cooler when it was wet ..
Oh my Keith Whitley is one if my favorite country music singer. Many times in my loneliness after my divorce, Keith's music kept me company. I haven't thought of him in years and must search for that CD, although I probably listened o n a cassette tape. Thank you Tipper for bringing back all the memories.
I also liked this reminder of Keith. What a shock when he was gone! The county where he was from joined my home county. He was very talented…such a loss!
I hope that this does not offend anyone. When I was a teenager a friend invited me to a picnic with his family. He introduced me to his grandfather and after speaking to him for a while he stood up and said he had to use the mens room. When he returned he said he had some words of wisdom for us and then he said "a bean will always be a bean but a pea can be a relief." For some reason that has stuck with me. Thank you for your videos.
I haven't heard that saying for years! My dad used to say " Skat Cat get your tail outa the gravy"! Usually when we were grabbing something from the table before everyone got sat down at the table. He's the only one I remember saying it. We are from Western NC.
You are so fortunate that you received rain last night. It’s been over 2 weeks since we have gotten anything and my garden and flowers are showing it. Even with drip hoses, it’s just not the same.
Sayings😂😂 After eating a big meal, we often say "I feel tighter than a swollen tick on fat happy dog," as we were rubbing our bellies😅😅 Loving all the wisdom❤
In my family we would say "fuller than a tick in a dog's ear" but I had an Aunt who just couldn't stand that so we kids started saying "fuller than a tick in a very comfortable location." 🤣
Thanks for the wisdom. I love it. I wish I lived near by so I could go to the book signing and see that amazing store. Glad to hear your getting some produce out of your garden. Brooks, Oregon
I needed those wise sayings today, more than you know. Truly made me tear up. xoxo to all y’all. Tell Matt to stay hydrated as I have been sweating so much, even with vacuuming in the ac, that I have another kidney stone on the move. Dehydration is no joke. It’s not even July 😢😢😢
My grandma and mama always said "scat cat"when someone sneezed. There are SO MANY sayings that you bring up that remind me of my grandmother. Her maiden name was Steele and I often wonder if her family came from Appalachian country. I must do some research. I only remember her mentioning that they lived in the Ellerbe area of Montgomery County NC but feel for sure that some must have been from the North Carolina mountains. Oh how I wish she was still here to talk to.
Thinking it's a cultural thing. I never ever saw any men in my family wear shorts or even bare feet or shirtless until I was 14 Daddy took Granny & Ma to Hawaii. He wore shorts there. He passed in 2013 at 88 years old & I never ever saw his bare chest & only ever saw his bare feet once in my life. He always wore work pants too. No blue jeans ever. And a suit to church.
@@1LittleNonna Ma used to say we would get worms from bare feet. I was always bare foot tho. We went as far as taking leather sting, tying it around our middle toe then up our foot & around our ankle so it looked like we had sandals on when we went into a store.
The men in my family never wore shorts much either. Paw paw wore overalls. My uncle wore coveralls. Dad always wears blue jeans and he wore his blue work shirts before he retired. I always thought it was to protect their legs. They were always mowing, cutting brush, working on cars or machines. My Grandma had the cutest thing she would do to your nose. She would touch your chin and say Chicken. Then she would touch your forehead and say Rooster. Finally, she would pull your nose softly and say Pullet! 🐓
Oh my! That brings back memories. People did that nose pulling thing to me all the time when I was little. Thanks for all the wonderful memories that brought back.
When I was growing up grampa told us to keep our own nose dry and you won't have to worry about how wet someone else's was also keep your own door step clean you won't be worried about someone else's
Tipper we got the Japanese beetle traps with the bag and lure that hangs on the bottom and they have really worked. Reduced the beetles by 90% at least.
Yay for rain! We sure need it here in NE Oklahoma. I'm getting cherry tomatoes, cucumbers and squash already. The blackberries are in peak production, and the basil is almost ready for first harvest. I also harvest thyme, rosemary and oregano throughout the growing season. I need to harvest some of my sage as well, as I noticed it was ready. My slicer tomatoes are not ready but they are huge. I'm hoping they ripen soon because, like Matt, I'm ready for a tomato sandwich! We're in the excessive heat here, but that's just driven me in the house for chores so I'm canning up some chili and shepherd's pie filling. Have a great day.
My son had one of his friends over one day and they were talking about things parents say and this young boy said his dad always says this as he or his brothers and sisters are leaving the house. My son's friend's grandmother told us ,"The more you have, the more you have to take care of. I find this to be true in my old age.
Another saying from my Appalachian childhood... regarding cats... "Nervous as a cat in a room full of Rocking Chairs"
I grew up hearing, nervous as a long tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs.
Said in Canada too when I was growing up 😂
my dad always says "If IF was a skiff we could all go for a boat ride"
Oh yes Tipper I heard that from family from southern Indiana ..scat there Tom your tails in the gravy . Your channel is Amazing!
When something doesn't go according to plan, my African husband says "everyday can't be Sunday." 😁
Love that!
When we were young boys and would say we "can't" do whatever we were supposed to do, my friends mom, Christine, would say, " can't never do anything". My house love yalls channel, it is a blessing, celebrate on...

I love that. I may have to paint that on a bench of my own, if you don't mind.
My grandma said"the faster I go...the behinder I hh get! " 😂
Tipper, when I would ask my grandmother where she was going, she would say, “I’m going crazy…….you want to come along?”
That’s funny! Never heard that. Have a great week! ♥️
I said that to my children and my Granddaughters.
I was born in eastern KY and my granny always said scat there Tom. Your tail’s in the gravy.

Love the Monday chat 😊
Hi Tipper! This is Cheryl Hutson. Just wanted to tell you I am reading a book by John Parris called These Storied Mountains. There is a chapter about corn and how it was used back in the old days and it made me think of you and Matt. It is a wonderful read if you haven’t already read it.
That’s a great book 😊 thank you for thinking of us!
My husband's family always said "Scat Cat" when somebody sneezed. My sister and I used to laugh and say somebody in their family must have been allergic to cats. Now years later I found a lot of their sayings came from their wonderful Appalachian Mammaw.
That's what my family has always said too.😊
@@annahowell4310 My family said that too.....in eastern NC!
My Mama used to have a saying, especially when she didn't feel too good. She would say "I feel so unnecessary". Ethel Mae was a trip....
God bless
Grandma always said don't get above your raising and always remember where you came from.
Sounds like my Papaw 😊
Thank you 😊
My husband works as a hydro journeyman and he’s never worn shorts except OCCASIONALLY on vacation but I could count on 1 hand the times. I’ve never seen any of our fathers and grandfathers wear them either! Some of our menfolk also wear long sleeves yea-round.
I remember folks saying "scat you cat your tails on fire!" I kinda think I never knew WHY they said it tho. Lol
Some lyrics from my favorite band DMB. What i want is what I’ve not got but what I need is all around me.
Tipper, Tipper, Tipper.... . Such a sweet gem😊
Thank you 😊
We always said bless you or God bless you.
I would often call a teacher "mom" accidently because of their closeness and influence on us kids.
Along the lines of "remember who you are," I often have told my kids "remember who you belong to" meaning God. In order for them to think about it in the face of temptation.
Our saying here in NW Tennessee is "scitty scat" when one of the children sneezes and they always laugh.
" dont worry so much because you cant change the outcome".Ive thought about that saying so many times and the person that told me.😊
My father always wore long sleeves and long pants. In the summer he wore the under shirt that had no sleeves. He said it kept you cooler when it was wet ..
Love where you are videoing from!will try this recipe on our bugs if we get any!
Good morning Tipper , have a great week stay safe God blessyour beautiful family.
Praying and Blessed! 🤗🙏💕👣👣
I heard about doing chores a home. Grandma said. You start and I'll let you know when you're finished.❤❤
😊
That’s good! 😊
Pretty smart grandma ya got there! 😀
After we eat a big family meal, we rub our bellies and say, "ohhhhh my boom-bah-lattie"
In my family we would say "fuller than a tick in a dog's ear" but I had an Aunt who just couldn't stand that so we kids started saying "fuller than a tick in a very comfortable location." 🤣
@@osmadchloThat's a good one😂
@@DancingWatersAnCoFOBI like that one❤
Thanks for the wisdom. I love it. I wish I lived near by so I could go to the book signing and see that amazing store. Glad to hear your getting some produce out of your garden. Brooks, Oregon
You are so welcome 🤗
It was always "scat". I used to go to Alexanders, love it! I loved to hear Keith Whitley sing, I have a CD .
Praying for you!!
This is my wisdom...
In life be careful what you pray for.
Cuz you might just get it.
Also, be very specific..
God has a sense of humor.
Sprays such as you made, can help keep bunnies and deer away as well.
My Mother in law always said “he would rather climb a tree and tell a lie than stand on the ground and tell the truth!”
I just ate some cucumbers from my garden. My rattlesnake beans are just now blooming. I am looking forward to them .
That is great!
We were not allowed to go outside without shoes. Grandma said we would get worms. I still cringe when my grandkids play barefoot!
Love that!!
Oh my! That brings back memories. People did that nose pulling thing to me all the time when I was little. Thanks for all the wonderful memories that brought back.
Your hair looks so pretty, Tipper! ❤
Oh thank you!
When I was growing up grampa told us to keep our own nose dry and you won't have to worry about how wet someone else's was also keep your own door step clean you won't be worried about someone else's
Love the old sayings. Thanx! 😃
When me or my sister would sneeze, my mom would say “Scat Cat!”
I also heard "Scat, tom cat!"
You look so pretty in coral!! Beautiful inside and out!
Oh thank you!
Sounds so good!!
Tipper, I use Neem Oil spray on everything in our garden and it works. You may want to try it. I buy it at Lowe's. Good Luck from Alabama
Hope everyone is doing well. God bless !
We used to grow Kentucky Wonder string beans , they were very prolific and good for canning.
