  • You want to get better at pickleball but don't like drilling. This is a simple game that you can do with only two people. Some People call it Skinny Singles
Important Note = You can hit a ball around the post to win a point too. If you're playing cross-court that around the post-shot would have to be played on the wrong side and that's ok.

Great drill for learning ball control. My wife and I tried the drill and really enjoyed it. We live in a 55+ community, most of the players are 60+, my wife is 69 and I am 76 and have never considered the thought of playing singles. Using this drill as a 55+ singles game came to my mind, I have typed up instructions for the drill and have give it to others. They can use it as a drill if they want, although we are enjoying it as a "55+" Singles game.

I play skinny singles frequently, but have never set it up this way. I like the switching from straight-ahead to cross-court. I have found the cross-court version of this game comes with one non-realistic doubles scenario: the shot at 4:39 is one that my partner would have covered, as is the area of a quarter-circle at the intersection of the baseline and centerline on my side of the court. Being able to hit those areas consistently is the goal, and if you're beaten by those shots don't stress.

I played skinny singles today. I can see how the cross court games can help your skill level. I think I'll just play three games, regular skinny singles and two diverse cross courts.

This is the way we play . You get to practice diagonally and head on playing this way . I try to hit all my shots on my opponents back hand wich is excellent placement practice and gets a lot of points.

This is fine if you only want to improve your doubles game. However, don’t be afraid to play full court singles! Yes, it’s more running; yes it’s a lot of real estate to cover, but you will find it’s not as hard as you thought. It’s a different game, yes, but exciting -even for tennis players.
Full-court singles is def my favorite game.

muttley hehehe Understand your concern, tho fullcourt is mostly alot more running- most shots are digs and reflex-intensive. These are both challenging either way.

Nice, since you play both sides and both directions, but sometimes you get stuck in one spot and not practice what you'd like. One cool variation I like is that server decides before each point whether to go cross court or down the line. Good stuff.

This video was made 4 years ago. Skinny singles used to be played just in one spot. You didn't move per your score. You would play maybe one round crosscourt or maybe heads up. Everyone has adopted this method and just call it skinny singles now. You can also go around the post if you get the change as well.

    In a nutshell:
2 people play. You must hit to the even or odd side of the court corresponding to your opponents score. ATP may be hit to the "wrong" side.
    You're welcome.

I live in a Gated community called Hyde Park in Tulsa OK. We are blessed with two regulation indoor PICKLEBALL courts!
I would like to give our players a copy of the description of how Skinny Singles is played to the folks that i play with. Is there a link that you could provide to get a description of this game?

We call it serving skinny because only the server moves and receiver doesn't. Funny people making up names that has no association with the game. 😂

Skinny singles is the game where you play directly across from each other. This game is called Odd-Even and is a great singles game. This is NOT a drill!!!

Does anyone else worry that playing skinny might negatively affect your doubles play by getting you into the habit of letting shots go that would have been in for a full court game?
