I can't do 3rd drop shot consistently (more often get into the net), so I drive the 3rd, then drop the 5th. I just do it blindly because I found it easier for me to move forward to the net. Finally, you did this video with detailed explanations of why we do that. I am so happy to find this video. Thank you so much.
The drive is a far easier shot and the 3rd drop is an essential shot to have in your arsenal when you start to play competitive pickleball… it took me 4 months to get the 3rd shot drop consistently but it’s needed.
This is an excellent instructional video. It's going into my "Essential Pickleball" folder. I've been working on my soft game alot lately but I can't forget the power game.
Good call about the evolution of the game, seeing more of the tennis pros bringing their aggressive third shot drive mentality, setting up the 5th shot drop option. Solid, as always Tyson.
❌ The only drive lesson one would ever need is one that actually demonstrates proper drive mechanics. You skipped the "how" and went straight to "when" and "why".
Watch where your opponents are at, if they’re already at the kitchen then you drop it, and work your way up the kitchen. If the opponents are way back, I’ll drive it to keep them back and give me time to get to the kitchen.
Mostly if I’m balanced and how well my opponents handle pace. I like my drive so if I’m balanced and the ball is sitting up, I usually drive. Always drop if you’re off balance.
At 4.0/4.5 level. I master my soft 3rd shot drop. I am hitting like 80% of them unattackable when I am balanced. Around 10% attackable and around 10% missed hits. Because of this, I stay away from driving the ball on my 3rd shot which is my strength before. I barely drive nowadays except for the short and flat returns but even with those I find that my drives are weak and easy to deal with. With the sport getting aggressive like you guys are saying. Should I work on my drives again? Please advise.
I play at the same level and I would say yes, you need to be driving the ball. Don't force it, but when a ball is short and high, you absolutely should be driving it. When you're pushed back deep you can do what you're most comfortable with. But if your drops are locked in, why not add more variety to your game? Makes you harder to play against.
100% should be adding a solid drive to your game. Most people play a lot better when there isn’t a threat of a BIG drive coming their way. I find it really easy to deal with the 4.5s that can’t create from the back half of the court.
It’s important to have both options and know when to use each one as you progress. That way you could drive more when opponents struggle with pace or are slow getting in off the return, but drop more when you need to be more patient and work the point.
Ouch 🤕 Looks like a pickleball black eye! I was sporting one of those a while ago. Now, I’m a bit jittery at the net. Any advice on how to get over it?
Get goggles or protective eyewear, specifically fogless type. Of course Im one to give advice I have my protective eyewear packed in my pickleball bag as I'm playing.
Oh! Everyone wants hit hard, seems like no one said that last year, know everyone wants to play like a tennis player, I ever listened to anyone cause I’ve played tennis for 58 years. Know everyone’s wanting to play like me .Hit hard play to win , don’t give your opponent anything.
Don't pick on weaknesses in rec guys. Save that for tournaments. Use drills to practice placement but don't pick on the 60yo woman because she's the weaker player lol
This is an excellent instructional video on why not to piss off Tyson or you'll end up with a black eye.

Happy to help 😀
I literally do the same since my 3rd drops are often in the net!
I used to drive every 3rd shot but you won't beat the higher players doing that all the time. Learn the 3rd shot drop. It just takes practice.

Brilliant video, really great to see the progression of the drill for different levels as I always end up with a mixed group of people

Great to hear!
Very Good Drills and Very Helpful! We can't wait to implement these in our practice and drilling. Thank you
I really like your hierarchy list. Thanks! I've recently been mixing in a 3rd drive esp when the return is short and bounces high.
That’s a perfect time to use the drive 👍

The game is definitely changing 👍
@tyson so if my 3rd shot drop is good, would I drive it at the fourth? Or I should drive at the third and drop at the fourth?
Call me a newby, but... you did not teach How To Drive.
Agreed.

Gotta get this stuff out of the archives quicker, my man!
A lot more to come 👍
Thanks guys love these drills
Anytime 👍
Hi Tyson, do you drive using a continental grip or do you switch to eastern for baseline drives?
More Eastern
Or even semi western
While at the baseline for your third, what factors do you consider when deciding to drive vs drop? Ball height from the bounce of the return?

@@TysonMcGuffinPickleball thank you
What shoes are those?
Excellent drill.
Wish that I had someone to partner with 😢. Everyone around me just wants to play hard-hitting games.
Use a wall
This coming from 3.5 on good days, many of the drives looked like they'd go out.
Most looked in to me but he does slap his drives which might keep them higher than a top spin drive. Some would go out though.

@@Bergarita ALW wears those
@@Bergarita Thanks! Better take yours out of your bag! 😆
Besides eyewear, make sure you have your paddle up in the ready position.

How do I use my tall frame to my advantage when I play
Go to the kitchen line..
Lean in and take more balls out of the air when you’re at the kitchen line 👍
Got it. Love how u answer comments
Yup, too much talking and definitely not enough explanation on the mechanics of the drive. Also, as mentioned in other comments most looked out.
Great video, too many words 😅
Thanks for the feedback 🙏🏻
No one wants to talk about the eye? Did the guy in black take a ball in the eye? Why doesn’t anyone wear eye protection?
