Hi all welcome back to another video Dereck Reacts back at it again! This time around we take a look at another first time reaction with The Everly Brothers and their song "All I Have To Do Is Dream and Cathy's Clown." Wow, these brothers come through with a very beautiful catchy ballad and an interesting song. But these guys are onto something going way back to 1958.

Phil and Don Everly are the kings of vocal harmonies, and are hugely influential to many rock stars too 🥰

Dereck, I'm surprised you even react to them. I recommend that you should listen and react to more 50s songs and 50s artists, there may be a lot of ballads, but they're all good to listen 💙

Dereck! I am so happy you reacted to the Everly Brothers! If you want a tearjerker from them, "Let It Be Me" is a great song and other important songs to listen to are "Bye Bye Love", "Wake up, Little Susie", and "Til I kissed you"!! One of the most influential groups of all time!
But another crooner type from the 50s to listen to is Bobby Vinton with "Blue Velvet" or "Roses are Red (My Love)"!

Huge duet that deeply influenced the Beatles, Simon and Garfunkel, Paul and Barry Ryan, Françoise Hardy, Laurent Voulzy and so many others artists. They had two iconic tracks: All I have to do is dream and Crying in the rain. My fav are Crying in the rain and So sad which were covered by a bunch of singing stars.

One of the greatest duos ever! Had many great songs. Till I Kissed Ya. Bird Dog. Let it be Me(gorgeous), Walk Right In. Also When will I Be Loved( written by Phil) covered by Linda, Ronstadt, great also.

The Everly Brothers were a group that the Bee Gees listened to when they were little and they learned to harmonize by listening to the guys.

Everly Brothers were the best harmonizers ever. Don, on the right, always sang the melody. Phil, on the left, always sang the harmony.

Boudleaux (“BOOD-low”) Bryant wrote the ballad. Don Everly (older, dark-haired lead singer) wrote “Cathy’s Clown,” the EB’s biggest hit. The song’s revenue saved Warner Brothers from bankruptcy. The band in the background is The Crickets, the late Buddy Holly’s band. There was a whole lot of rock history onstage on that clip, taken from a British television show.
The Everly Brothers were the inspiration for The Beatles. John Lennon played rhythm guitar because Don Everly did. Paul McCarty saw himself as Phil Everly. The Beatles were an opening act for an English tour headlined by Little Richard, who dubbed them “The 4Everlys.”
The Beatles were called the Silver Beetles at first, named for a bug because Buddy Holly’s band was called The Crickets.

Oldie but a goodie. My favorite duo. Don't laugh but I had a big crush on the taller blond guy when I was little. hehe Those voices, that harmony, the tones from each of them.

OMG!! So did I!! In 1957 when I was 8 yrs old and Phil was 18 yrs old and they appeared on TV for the first time singing Bye, Bye Love, I took one look at Phil and I was smitten!!! Although Phil is gone, I still love my first crush!!! I'm not laughing...I'm right there with ya!!!

They do story songs as well, They hold the record for the top 100 hits by any duo. They rivaled Elvis hit for hit. 755 Releases · 43 Albums · 287 Singles Anything they did is good.

Ok, I’m impressed. I grew up loving them. They were my parents favorite. My father being from Ohio and my mother being from the UK. Interesting note, they were one of the few late 50s- early 60s groups where everything was recorded in stereo.

I think the next logical step would be a comparison video for 'Crying In The Rain' - Everly Brothers/A-ha 😊👌

I second 💯% this excellent suggestion! 😁 Fun fact... In appreciation for the new version of the song made by A-ha (1990), the Everly Brothers have given to Pål, Magne and Morten their own guitars ( black with white contour). A-ha use sometimes these guitars for shows... 😊🎶

    Thank you.
A lot of things worked together to make the Everly Brothers a smash. There was family support (their dad Ike Everly was also a singer-guitarist). They started in church and then branched out, like a lot of '50s acts. Many of their early hits were written by the Bryants, and were complex, rhyming in the middle of lines as well as at the end. The combination of their Kentucky accents, matching voices because they were brothers, and the times when the harmony line would either go higher than the melody line or drop a fifth interval lower (as opposed to the usual third interval), all made them stand out.
Other emotional ballads by them that you'd probably like include Devoted to You, Let It Be Me, Ebony Eyes, and Crying in the Rain. They also did a lot of fast songs, some with humorous twists. But I prefer the ballads.
The Beatles and other British Invasion groups took note of and deliberately imitated their harmony techniques. And in 1984, apparently as sort of a "thank you," Paul McCartney wrote On The Wings of a Nightingale, specifically so the Everlys could record it.
Side note: Don and Phil were both left-handed, but gave in and played guitar right-handed. The same is true of Bob Dylan, Paul Simon, Gary Moore, and others. Maybe that makes for a special sound. I don't know.
