The Spee-Lunker Cave Music And Sounds, 1968 Six Flags Over Texas 2

- CLEAN VERSION of this soundtrack with NARRATION and MASKING removed is available at SPEELUNKERCAVE.COM This is a sample of my latest and final replication of what it sounded like to ride through The Spee-Lunker Cave in about 1968. I have voiced over with interesting information about the ride. The slide show is just representative scene markers as so few images exist of the sixties version. NOTES: Final mix was 11 stereo tracks. The first section (before the lift) and the second section (after the lift) were initially two separate multi-track projects. The first section mix had 9 stereo tracks. The second section mix had 7 stereo tracks. Before the mixing time-lines were started, each pre-auditioned clip was cleaned and “tuned” in comparison to each other to get that mysterious sound. These clips were individually crafted from other multi-track project over the years. Loop breaks were selected, looping repeats were done, then editing for sequence took place. Signal processing was carefully applied to somewhat give the sensation of moving through scenes. Then the “unintentional” sounds were added. The pneumatic loading dock stop and release sound along with gentle tub bumping a water. I also added some air-piston sounds for the animations! This required at least 35 initial tracks in seven separate project files. I had to craft the animation sounds from scratch or modify other mechanical sounds. The final animation mechanism sound (for creaking timbers) alone took 10 tracks, precision edits and processing and several hours to complete. Each piece of music and “intentional” sound effects were actually auditioned, edited or crafted over the years. I crafted most of the sound effects and one of the music clips from scratch. The others were edited in addition to altering pitch and tempo, some drastically.
Since I started this madness in 2002, I have updated and revised the track many times. I created the sound effects myself and some of the music. Each music and sound effect clip was a separate multi-track project. Much of this new version draws from some previous work. I lost count how many time-line tracks were used over the years for the complete work on this project but it is into the hundreds. I don't know which is harder; to create something or accurately replicate something. In this obsession, I have created a replica.
I remember the first time I rode this great ride...back in June 6, 1976. It sure made a great impression on my young mind, let me tell you. The lift, mid-ride, as well as the spinning barrel, along with the dark and black lights and spee-lunkers, of course, made it so cool (literally). I remember looking under my bed for Spee-lunkers.. ;-)
Just visited for the first time in 45 years. I was so sad to see the cave was no longer there. I have such great memories of family vacations at Six Flags. Thank you for this.
This was amazing and took me back. I loved this ride above all others, and was super sad when it was replaced. Thanks for giving my 47 year old self a way to relive awesome childhood memories.
I really miss this attraction. I've become a hardcore Disneyland history buff and nerd in recent years, but I'll never forget how mysterious and intriguing the Speelunker Cave was. I was really sad the day I went to Six Flags only to find that it had been replaced with Looney Toons. Such a travesty.

This ride was a great respite from the Texas summer heat. We’d ride it several time per visit to cool off for a change of pace.
The black lights changed the color of our clothes. We looked weird. I can almost picture myself there.

I don't know if it was an original part of the cave but in the late 70s the rotating barrel had a counter rotating spiral disc on the wall to enhance the vertigo feeling.

The original version was well done. As a rider (and later an operator) in the '70s and very early '80s, you crafted an amazing final version. Bravo.

That was right after the lift. You can hear a clip of it here. I signal processed it heavily to make it sound like I remembered. For one thing, I sped up the tempo a bunch. Then I made it sound like it was coming out of those speakers.
I think I have a Mandela Effect with this ride. Was there not a giant black spider with glowing eyes that you had to pass under at one point?

THE SPEELUNKERS ARE COMING BACK!
The Spee-Lunkers are coming back but not The Cave. From what I heard it will be a dinky pirate battle story. The 1960's Cave was quite a one-of-a-kind experience that can't be topped by anything they do today.

@@doggo5121 That's okay for some. They like the Spee-Lunkers. I like the experience. The Cave had Spee-Lunkers at the time before its re-theming but it was not like the magical sixties version. There are few fans still alive that remember the amazing original version.
spee-lunker cave is returning to Six flags over Texas but under a newer version of it Called pirates of Spee-Lunker Cave
It won't be anything like "The Cave". It will look so much like the other rubber-stamp show rides they make now.
