Rush - "Distant Early Warning" (Bass Cover)

- There is something about Geddy Lee basslines from the 80s. His whole way about them is just out of this world. I rediscovered Rush albums from that decade during lock-down and did a deeper dive just recently. From the basslines' composition, the licks and overall tonal qualities... masterpieces all over.
Bass: Wal MK2
Tuning: Standard
The WAL tone is just immaculate lol would love to see "The Pass" on that beast, such a great track. Great job as always Kello! And that fill at 3:46 is just wild lmaaaoooo
Damn you're not kidding about that fill
Thank you very much! As I was rehearsing the song and that section came up I’d try to hold it off but the music just took me there… I could t help it be possessed by the flow and get my Ged out 😎
The Wal -- greatest instrument ever invented. God built it for Geddy, 'nuff said
Oh yeah 👊🏻🤩
Also Mick Karn!

Umm … maybe you don’t understand why I said that - it’s for incredibly fast and punchy players (so you can make out every note/ghost-note’s)
So in that respect - it’s Geddy who is was built for - no one else would I say ‘God built it for’
Great players have played with the Wal and we don’t need to go through them all.
Grace Under Pressure... an underrated masterpiece
Masterpiece no doubt 👊🏻
Agreed
g/p. My first front road tour, 1984. I’ve never looked back from front row. I love rush so much.
The greatest bass intro ever!!! Thanks for up!!!!
Glad you like it! Thanks 👊🏻
That was *phenomenal* … There’s no other word to describe it.
To say it was “excellent” or “awesome” just isn’t adequate.
I appreciate it 👊🏻
amazingly well done. the only sin here is to play this seated. This is a anthem, you should stand to play it 😄
Ha! I know 🙃
Both playing and the tone are spot on 🤙 Our man Kello never disappoints
Thank you 👊🏻
Tone of this guitar is beautiful. Wow
Thank you 🙏🏻
Excellent cover. My absolute favorite band to see live. I'll miss those tours, RIP Neil.
Definitely miss seeing Rush touring 🖤
Fantastic, this is one of my warm up songs, love the way you played it, wonderful tone,
Many thanks!👊🏻
Really tasty play-along - a rare beast in your hands
Thank you very much ☺️
I love the fact that you are such a tough guy, who's playing tough musik, but you just surprised me) Thank you for your work!
Thank you very much, my pleasure. I live music, and above all I love bass. 😉🤘🏻
When Kello drops a new video I stop what I’m doing to watch! 😊
Same 🖐️
Same🤘🏻
Thank you! Much appreciated ☺️
@@kellogc you’re an amazing talented artist! Professional all the way! I’m still saying you’re the best bass player I’ve ever seen or heard play. Hands down!
October 26, 1991. Presto tour. Eric Johnson opening. 4th song was Distant Early Warning. Floor seating, center aisle. Great visibility of the stage. I really hope you had a chance to see Rush live, Kello! Such incredible musicians. For every bit of magic they had in the studio, there was twice as much magic in their live shows!
The usual platitudes for the excellent cover, as always!
April 7 1994, Counterparts, St Louis Arena, Primus opened.
Thank you. I did get to see them once. Gibson Amphitheater, June 22nd, 2011. Time Machine Tour. They played my favorite album “Moving Pictures”. One of the overall best concerts in all aspects I’ve been in. Absolutely memorable 🙌🏻
Fricken fantastic. I'm an instant fan and subscriber. Nice work sir. Also, just a drummer.
Thank you very much 👊🏻
My favorite all time album.
It is a very solid album 👊🏻
Muchas gracias! Abrazo hasta España 🙌🏻
this song got me hooked on rush when I was 12 and wanting to learn guitar even though I took up bass nearly 2 years ago and I am 50 now
It’s never late to pick up the bass 👊🏻
@@kellogc I was originally playing guitar but could never get it together I tried playing a bass one night at a jam just for fun and it snowballed from there I tossed the guitar for bass, and you are right it is never too late to play bass.
Yes, the signals to grace to power windows era is sublime and peak Rush in my book (I was a young guy then). I thought Vapor Trails was an echo of that era. Loving the Wal, I'm sure it cost an arm and leg.
Amazing! Awesome tone! Very well done.
Thanks a lot!👊🏻
WOW
👊🏻😉
ojalá haber encontrado tu canal antes, es una joya! me diste ganas de darle otra escuchada a GUP, gracias a ti escuché notas aquí que nunca antes JAJAJ.
Best Bass Cover so far
Thank you ☺️🤙🏻
WAL of sound!
Oh yes! 😉👌🏻
Wow! Great cover. Your bass has a GREAT tone! I love that bass in that song, and I love your touches to it. You nailed it!
Thank you, I appreciate it 🤘🏻
wow on the tone..bravo
Thank you 👊🏻
Long my fave Rush album. Geddy does some his best playing IMO. KELLO, another masterful presentation.
Thanks! Geddy is the man! 👊🏻
Great stuff. Love that WAL tone.
Gotta love it! ☺️🤙🏻
Exactly excellent 👏
Many thanks! 👊🏻
You never fail to impress !
Thanks! 👊🏻
Rolooooon!!
Oh si! 🤘🏻🤩
My favourite era of Rush, and one of my favourite songs of theirs! Killer cover, Kello!
Their most musically sophisticated by far. They got to taken in by the fashions of the day, abandoning this era as soon as grunge took over.
One thing Rush fans can say is we got so many great Rush albums with such varied soundscapes and memorable songs. 👊🏻
Love that whole album! Excellent cover!
Great album indeed 🤘🏻🤩
Love Geddy Lee, and love Rush. This song is one of theirs that can easily get stuck in my head, i'll find myself singing 'red alert, red alert'. You did a great cover here 🤘
Love Rush too 🤘🏻🖤🤘🏻
Dude you make it all look so easy even when you play stuff like Rush or Primus. You are a beast on the bass brother. 🤘😝🤘
I appreciate that! 👊🏻☺️🤘🏻
Brilliant 🤘👽🤘
Thank you 👊🏻
Siempre he tenido el disco de “Grace under pressure” de Rush en un lugar especial en mi corazón porque todas sus canciones traen alegría a mi corazón, excelente cover Mr. Kello.
Mis mejores deseos.
Muchas gracias! Es un gran disco sin duda! 👊🏻
Fantastic Kello, thank you so much. I remember becoming a Rush fan in the 1970's when Hemispheres came out and they're still one of my favourite bands. Like many other Rush fans I under-appreciated Geddy's work from the 1980's but you're right, it deserves more recognition. Thanks again!
Glad you enjoyed it! All Rush eras are great, their evolution and amount of memorable music they left us is a great legacy 🙌🏻
Terrific!
Thank you my friend 👊🏻☺️
nice!
Thanks! 👊🏻
Awesome job!
Thanks for the visit! 👊🏻
👏 Nice! That bass line is killer.
It is very fun to play 🤘🏻
Sweet, velvety bass lines 👏 they just roll on 🔥
I dont remember hearing this song before. I enjoyed it!
Thank you! You should definitely listen to that album by Rush 👊🏻
Making me want to deep dive Rush’s catalog as well. It’s been a while.
Awesome work here as usual Kello!
You should! 👊🏻😉
Well done!
Thank you! 👊🏻
Slowly, but inevitably growing out of your room sir, either you move to another room in the house (sorry Kellos wife, but this is important 😆), OR, you stop buying basses,…… but stop buying more basses is not an option 😂😋😇
Exellent cover and tone as always 🤘🏻👏🏼😎
Good eye. Yes… space is starting to become a problem. As you keenly pointed out no more basses may be a complex solution 🙈
And you got a wal bass my goodness. The tone is incredible sounds better than geddy steinberger. Which is what I assume He used to record that album( fender/ rickenbacher? )as well. I dont think he was using the wal by then. I saw him using it during hold your fire tour In eighty nine in new orleans. But that is a beautiful bass. I don't care if it is during the keyboard years. Kid gloves Red lenses Are great songs but my two favorites are the enemy within and the body electric. Thank you so much for the demonstration.
Your correct, he used a Steinberger on that album. Which actually sounds pretty good too. Wal basses do have a very strong character to them 🤙🏻
muy bueno ,buen tema
Muchas gracias 👊🏻☺️
Badass brother!!!
Thank you 😊
Excellent cover! Great thing about Rush and The Ged, tons of good material, not necessarily all in voque but the spirit core of Rush is always there! Kept fans like me around for decades!
Well said! Geddy rules all 🙌🏻
👍👍👍
🤘🏻☺️🤘🏻
Muchas gracias ☺️
⚡️⚡️⚡️⚡️😍
🤘🏻🤩🤘🏻
great tone
I am using a Line6 Helix 👊🏻
@@kellogc interesting since that’s marketed for six string. Sounds great!
I appreciate it 👊🏻
Great tone Brother.
Cool! One of the best versions of this song I've seen here. And this bass tone... killer!
One of my dreams is to own a Wal bass.
Awesome!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥❤️
Thanks 🔥
Hey Kello. I was thinking of you playing Rush just the other day. Awesome tone. Thanks.
We’re on sync then! Thank you 🙌🏻
Muchas gracias! ☺️
Marvelous tone and playing, as always! You really nailed it.
Glad you like it! 👊🏻
Very well done! Keep on Rushing on!
Thanks! Will do! 👊🏻
Great cover, as always. 👍👏
Thank you very much 👊🏻
Muchas gracias! 👊🏻
🤘🏽🔥
👏👏👏👏😃
Nice job!
Thanks! 🤙🏻
Rush! Excelente! Valeu Kello!
Thank you 🙌🏻
Good cover ! Congratulation !
Thanks for listening ☺️
Que chingón cover
Muchas gracias 🤘🏻😉
You should do a rush cover with that steinberger you got, something off of this album or power windows or even hold your fire
Definitely 🤩
@@kellogc if you haven’t done this song already, could you potentially do “The Big Money”, really shows off that Steinberger sound
sólo falta cantarlo jajajaj excelente
Makes it sound like the version from “A Show of Hands”
I'm not familiar with this song but this was smooth
GUP :D
This guy just casually breaks out a Wal
🤘🏻😉👌🏻
Red Lenses would make a great video
Yeah! 👊🏻😎
I second this.
Oof! Nice tone
Thank you 🤘🏻☺️
1. Geddy 2. Steve HArris 3. Geez 4. Cliff Burton 5. Kello
Thank you very much. The bar is very high on that list! I appreciate just being considered. 👊🏻
What are the exact knob and filter settings on your Wal?
I think I just rolled the tone on both picks down to 8 👍🏻
@@kellogc No filter knobs or pick attack pulled out?
@@barendtromp that’s right. Only cut the treble a bit on the tone and that’s it 👍🏻
Hi hello, great cover as always, please can you do cover of king for a day by faith no more, I know you like them.
You’ve read my mind! 🙈
👊🏻☺️🤘🏻
Oh, if there's a movie made about you, i nominate Gary Oldman tonplay you.
🤘🏻🙃🤘🏻
You don't think you could do something from signals like digital man
I think I could give it a try 👌🏻
