I Stepped On A Rattlesnake : The Rattlesnake Mine

  • Rattlesnake! This is one of the scariest videos I have ever done, in retrospect. I actually stepped on a Black-tailed rattlesnake late in the evening prior to me filming this video and killed it just outside the mine entrance without even knowing it until I revisited the mine with my brother the next morning. Apparently when I was inspecting the ore cart rail the evening before I stepped on the rattlesnake's head and killed it before it could bite me. I remember hearing a faraway buzzing noise like a bee or a drone, but never realized it was a snake quite literally underfoot! For some reason, I went ahead and explored the mine even though I was fully expecting it to be a den of vipers.
Note: I would never knowingly kill a rattlesnake in the wild.
    About Aquachigger:
I enjoy metal detecting for historical items like gold coins, relics, silver coins, and other buried treasures. I also metal detect for gold and silver nuggets and even meteorites. I like to make videos that promote my choice of lifestyle that includes outdoor adventure, metal detecting, yapping, searching for river treasure, SCUBA diving, exploring abandoned places, hiking, caving, caring for animals and pets, and observing the things outdoors that often go unnoticed by most people who are not familiar with outdoor adventures and nature. I keep my UA-cam "Aquachigger" channel family-friendly and hope you subscribe if you like my style.

I was walking down a 1,000 foot cliff to a mining claim when one of the guys behind me who had gone off the path said he almost stepped into a rattlesnake den. I stopped and turned around to listen and when I looked down there was a Northern Pacific rattlesnake a foot from my leg. It wasn't rattling but it was eyeing my leg pretty intently. I took a big drag off my cigarette and tossed it just the other side of the snake. When it turned to look at my cigarette I jumped back. That's the day I consider smoking saved my life.
Those wooden supports are called stulls. Besides holding up loose slabs from falling off the back (ceiling) or ribs (sides) of the adit, their other function is to indicate movement of the slabs. When you see that the wedges have been compressed you know that the slab or fault has moved.

Duck Landes -The Pacific rattlers ain't known for rattling much. My kid was stepping over a wash in Southern Oregon and one struck at him. He jumped out of the way and killed it with a rock. That was on his fifteenth birthday while we were placer mining on the applegate.

@@mikeblair2594: When walking or horse back riding usually the 3rd in line is the worst place to be. The first person or horse walks by and wakes the snake up. The second walks by and makes the snake mad. The third gets bit.

There's a mine my girlfriends uncle's took me too. We went in a few hundred feet but it was the sketchiest thing I've ever done. It was definitely old, the timber used for the supports were literal logs. There were rocks that have fallen from the ceiling the size of a school bus. Just overall a horrible decision to even go in. The mine was on the PA, MD border near a town called Hyndman.

Ha ha ha...Yoou are charmed. long ago, I had a friend named Chazel. We were building my boat. Chazel kept his hand tools in an old car parked ( up on blocks) in the back yard, near where the boat was... well, I saw Chazel stop and make a serious face, then he stomped the copperhead that was ready to strike him. I heard Chazel go " hmmph..." and he came on over to the boat with the tools. My friend was 75 years old and tougher than any man I have ever known even though he had been crippled by tuberculosis surgery back in the 1940's. later when we were done for the day, Chazel tossed that snake into the burn barrel. Never said another word about it. I am glad you were telling the story about the snake you killed, instead of the snake telling his buddies about the Chigg he killed. Right on, Smiling, George.

Used to rock hunt in the Mojave, you are better off tossing a spray of small gravel than one big rock. Often they will remain motionless and try to stay hidden unless they are truly threatened. Single rocks fall all the time, not too scary, but being hit by a pebble will make them move. FYI

I've come across rattlers several times while hiking and my husband just saved me from stepping on one , one time. We were coming down a steep trail one afternoon very quickly when my husband suddenly jerked me back from behind. I've a friend who did the "states" drive around, and in one of his treks away from the car, well, lucky bastard stepped on a rattlesnake, actual full on step. Rattlesnake just wakes up (we think it was sleeping) and hisses, my friend was frozen, so barely removed his leg off, and then the rattle snake just hissed again and meandered away.
I would've never believed his story, but both his brother and his So were there. If it were me, i'd get in the car, drive to the nearest lottery point and pick up a high pot, because that's just pure luck that day was.

Snakes are cold blooded so generally won't chill inside mines much past entrance. Too cool in there. They prefer basking in the sun. Anyway, I came across a medium small rattler on some railroad tracks about 100 yards from a tunnel. It gave us plenty of warning shaking it's tail loudly from at least 25 feet away. We decided to go the other way.

While you may have stepped on the snake, I believe it probably expired after swallowing a too-large meal that it could neither digest normally nor regurgitate. It looks bottom-heavy. When snakes leave winter brumation, they will occasionally prey on animals too large. Depending on what the prey is, the snake's stomach or digestive tract can tear. This kills snakes in the wild all the time. Since snakes require environmental warmth to digest their prey, a few cold nights, or days, could also have contributed to its death. The snake is a yellow-phase black-tailed rattlesnake (Crotalus molossus), about a year and a half old.

I had a cat that threw a baby rattler in bed with me. I kept throwing it outside. I worked nights. I finally opened my eyes enough to realize that it had a brown pattern. I got out my chart of the 13 rattle snakes in TX. Yeah that woke me right up!!! I put the snake in a plastic bag and called animal control. My cat poked enough holes in the bag that the snake survived. Animal control never came. I ran over it with my car. This snake was poisonous even though it was too young to have rattles. I was concerned because there were small kids in the neighborhood.

Dude! You got lucky. Rattlers are no joke. Do you think that the fire had a part in the partial collapse of the mine?

I think that snake was in the mine and got smashed in the head when the ceiling caved in on it. Then it crawled out and died.
