This comment is a bit personal, but I just had to share why MDNA means so much to me. It was actually my first-ever Madonna album. A few years ago, after she had surgery, Madonna appeared at the Grammys, and she was everywhere in the news. That got me curious about her music. I stumbled upon a post that featured 'Sorry,' and it was so catchy that I decided to dive deeper. I chose MDNA because, to me, it had the best album cover-just striking. The first song I heard was 'Some Girls,' and I was instantly hooked. Then I got into 'Girl Gone Wild,' 'I’m Addicted,' and it just spiraled from there. I didn't even know 'Gang Bang' was a track because it’s unavailable in the Indian market, so I jumped straight to 'I’m Addicted' after track 1. What’s crazy is that MDNA was the album that shifted my loyalty. Gaga was my favorite, but after some of her comments about Madonna, I no longer connected with her, cause she indirectly told how madonna can't play instruments, or stay in studios and write her own songs. Even though I didnt know Madonna, I checked on the facts and saw that Madonna had written majority of her songs with collabs and plays instruments too, anyways, MDNA pushed me to explore Madonna's music-and it stuck. I totally get that you found the album a bit random, but for me, it’s so cohesive. It’s got everything-high-energy dance tracks, raw revenge songs, break-up anthems, and heartfelt love songs. It’s like a whole emotional journey wrapped up in one album. I also wasn’t feeling 'Gimme All Your Luvin’' at first, but seriously, check out the MDNA Tour version-it hits differently. MDNA was my first CD too, and I’ve become a bit obsessed. I own two copies and just ordered the deluxe edition. It’s not my all-time favorite-that spot goes to Rebel Heart, which I’ve collected in every version: standard, deluxe, super deluxe, plus the tour CD/DVD. But MDNA will always be my #2 for how it kickstarted my Madonna journey. So, thank you for giving MDNA a fair shot. I’ve been begging for this reaction for ages, and I just wanted to share why this album is so special to me. Got it 2 times straight in Spotify wrapped #1 album and artist, and I become her top 0.5% fans with listening time and dedication.
I had a similar experience with MDNA. It was my first Madonna album as a declared fan. The expectations were so high. The anticipation was out of this world. She had done the Superbowl HT show and i was so excited and falling in love with her music more than ever at that point. Then the MDNA TOUR kicked off and i had no choice but to stan her. I chose her as my fav artist ever. She's the GOAT.
@@jair8804 yeah! Even though I was 5 years old in 2012 This year I came to know MDNA held the record as the most pre orders in iTunes and it debuted at 1 And its tour was also very successful. So it’s wild how I used to thing Gaga was my final fav But now I have 16 madonna cds which is 9 more than Gaga cds I had bought. So I’m quite happy And she really motivates me a lot. She has been active about all the values which every parent has tried to engrain And I love it.
In MDNA you get The 5 Emotional stages of divorce: Denial, Rage, Bargaining, Depression and Acceptance. The Deluxe songs are essential listens. This is one of my favorite albums . You did not hate it. I’ll take that as a win. Great fun watching your videos. Hope you do more Madonna content. ❤️🙏
I would totally recommend checking out some of her non-album tracks, because she has so many gems outside of her main discography! To name a few: Rescue Me, Has To Be, I Want You, You'll See, Celebration, Beautiful Stranger, History, Justify My Love, Supernatural, This Used To Be My Playground...
Let Down Your Gaurd and Has To Be are such lost gems in Madonna's vast music catalog. I hope Beth ends up doing Madonna b-side song reactions on the future 🤞🙏
The tour versions of songs you thing you hate, will change you to loving them. Her live performances are out of this world. Best live performer in the history of performing.
@@BethThereseReacts there are so many amazing songs you haven’t heard yet from compilations and soundtracks. Some of her best and most iconic. Especially from the 90s
The MDNA Tour give the songs so much more life! So hopefully you’ll get around to watching the tour. Thank you again for another Madonna reaction video. ❤❤❤
I hope you give “Love Spent” another listen cause it’s probably one of her best songs in the last twenty years. And please listen to I’m Breathless. It’s definitely one of her complete studio albums and a lot of fun. One of the tracks, “Sooner or Later,” won the Oscar for best song, and it’s the album that “Vogue” (one of her biggest hits) is from!
MDNA era highlights (and some comments about your comments): • . She brought back the alter ego Dita (from the Erøticā album) in this era. And was originally going to feature the Madame X alter ego (more like a femme fatale than a spy) but it was scrapped in the process. • Madonna wanted Quentin Tarantino to shoot the Gāng Bāng music video but he wasn't interested in MVs. The performance is so Kill Bill, tho. • Some tracks from this album were bought. Some Girls demo is sung by a young Bebe Rexha. • She spent 3 months recording this album so that kinda explains many flaws this album has. • Lol with the Hung Up sneak on a MDNA reaction 😂 she kinda did this album just to say "stream the previous ones, bestie". • Masterpiece is more like an extra track, made for a film she did before this album was released. Beth, I'm so glad you did these reactions. Not everyone ends this journey especially being as consistent as you! I can tell you enjoyed her albums. I just want to say thank you. I really appreciate your effort and passion. Loved each reaction you have done so far!
Just saw you dropped "Disease" today, too, running there next -- to start, I can't believe you caught the "Hung Up" reference in "Love Spent"'s acoustic section!! So many people miss that! So, one of the reasons I love "MDNA" so much is because of the time it was released and I was going through a rough breakup at the time so I connected with this album in a way I think it's really, really understandable a lot of people didn't. Your critiques of the production are very common, so please don't feel like anyone is judging you. It's a sound that either works for you or it doesn't, frankly. "MDNA" and "Hard Candy" both fall flat in their middle section when the songs start really sounding identical. They're the most homogenous of her albums, and thankfully out of fourteen studio albums we can only say that about two of them! To give you a little context for some things you mentioned: "Give Me All Your Luvin'" sounds the way it does because it was written very specifically for the Super Bowl, and she first performed it live during her halftime show, which was the most-watched halftime show of all time until she was unseated a few years later by Beyonce. I've always liked it reluctantly because you kind of want to hate it but the chorus is so damn catchy. "Some Girls" is not a great song lyrically but it does make sense when you realize it's directed at the girls that Guy Richie cheated on her with. It's not an empowerment song, to be sure. "Love Spent" has an acoustic version available that features Priscilla Renea harmonizing with her that I think you'd really like. "I'm a Sinner" is more easily understood in the context of how Madonna takes comfort from Catholicism and rebels against it in equal turns. I agree that it's a little too long for its own good, but it's one of my favorites. "Masterpiece" did indeed win a Golden Globe for Best Original Song to the soundtrack of the film that Madonna directed and co-wrote called "W./E.", which tells the story of King Edward and his decision to abdicate the throne and run away with American socialite Wallis Simpson. It's a fantastic film, though it's terribly sad. I don't think she'd really intended to include it on "MDNA" but when it won its award it was kind of a shoe-in. "Falling Free" I adore, and just like "Devil Wouldn't Recognize You" I think that when you go back and re-listen to it on its own away from the total "MDNA" experience, you'll come to love it too, especially if you pay closer attention to the lyrics; it sounds like it could have been ripped off of "Ray of Light". And, finally, "Gang Bang" doesn't have a music video while at the same time it does. I highly advise, especially because you pointed out exactly how cinematic it felt from start to finish, looking up the live version she did on the MDNA World Tour. It's set up like a music video with extras, fake gun props, and moving backdrops on the screens behind her that tell the story of the song while she's singing it and it's a deeply fun ride. Again, though, girl, just like "Hard Candy", either the sound is going to work for you or it isn't, and there isn't a Madonna fan alive that would judge you for overall disliking either "Hard Candy" or "MDNA". I myself love "MDNA" overall and can listen to it repeatedly whereas I tend to go back to maybe five songs off of all of "Hard Candy", for some people it's reversed and for others they hate the both of them. Thank you so much for taking us on this ride with you, and I really do hope that you get to her soundtrack albums and music videos and other artistry now that you've got the studio albums out of the way!!
The name of the album is an allusion to MDMA (ecstasy). You got it right when you said the cover of the album gave you high energy vibes, as it was supposed to give you some euphoria effects while listening to it. Beth, I guess you’ve never taken MDMA, but at the end of your trip, you always get a comedown. The drug has taken you high using up all your serotonin and now it leaves you depleted of it, making you feel a bit empty and sad. So the album starts on a high and Madonna left the slow tracks at the end on purpose, they’re are the literal comedown of the album. Watching you during falling free, seeing you so tired and a bit confused, it’s very similar to what a comedown looks like. So the album did have an effect on you. You really consumed it and felt it to the end. You went through the experience, girl! Well done. You broke off love spent and came back to it, so obviously the song felt unfinished. Listen to it a few more times. Fun fact: Madonna had a cold while recording falling free, but William orbit told her it sounded cool so she didn’t re-record it. I think Give me all your love sounds like girlfriend by avril Lavigne - probably Madonna’s worse single to date.
@@BethThereseReacts I figured. Listen again to I’m addicted, where she clearly mentions MDMA. William orbit complained that the process for recording this album was very different than ray of light’s as Madonna was very busy doing different projects like directing W.E. (the movie that she won the golden globe for masterpiece). She’s known for overlooking every part of her productions, but during MDMA she mostly put her voice over a pre-recorded voice of another singer. At Madame X (extreme occidental) she seems to reflect on projects like Hard Candy and MDNA weren’t heart projects, as if she was told to chase the trends, something she never done before. She usually set trends before these projects.
I loved your little “palate-cleanser” moment with Hung Up lmao!!! I appreciate your efforts to find something good in every track. I personally looove this album because I saw her live on the MDNA Tour which was my first concert ever at 17! One of my favorite things about your content is that you’re very objective. Keep it going Beth!
after many years, i think the deluxe track named "Best Friend" is my favorite from this era. it captures divorce so well - bitter, sweet, and bittersweet
I'm so glad I found your channel recently and after digging into your Avril reactions, I'm here loving your Madonna's one. MDNA has a lot of context: 1. It's her "Divorce & Revenge" album. A lot of people say that It's "Like a prayer" from her first marriage but we all know that "Like a Prayer" is more of a "Death, reflection and rebirth" album, 2. As some say, "Deluxe tracks" are essential to connect with the whole message and artistic choices. BUT MDNA has a big problem (and It's not the EDM), it's that the tracklist got all over the place and does not tell her storyline correctly. For me, the best order should be: -Girl gone wild as introduction of the album - Gang bang as a “the start of a ride of deception and contempt” -Best friend: The “Divorce song” - Love Spent “The realization of the breaking point” - I Don’t Give as the Anger explotion - I fucked up: The anger fades and she realized she made mistakes too and she thinks she wants to come back but then she realized she won’t do it. - Turn Up the radio: The moment she decides to move on and drown all the sadness away in her love for the music. - B-Day Song: It's a silly but funny song. She focuses on "her birthday" follwing moving away from the previous track. It's okay if you want to cut it off from the album. It does't modifies the "narrative". - I’m a Sinner: She started to party and “go wild” after all the sorrow. She wants to party and enjoy life again as “A sinner” moving from the “perfect wife” she sad she tried to be. - Some Girls: A moment in the party when she tries to empower herself but she is still in the mid of the party trying to wash her divorce away. - I’m addicted: a “drive me crazy" when she meet someone new and falls in love. - Gimmie all your luvin: She is in the “in-love phase” and wants it all. - Superstar: She starts to idolize her new lover and it's the start of a new conflict. - Beautiful Killer: For me, this is the moment she realized this new lover is really good but nos as good as she deserves it at this moment of her life and at the last moment she decides to “kill” that love. - Masterpiece: “You are too much for me and I can't tell you why It hurts so much to be in love with a masterpiece cause after all bothing's indestructible”: The moment she ends this relationship. - Falling Free: Her closure from this journey: she decides to move away from her divorce and this ephemeral new love. She waves goodbye. The “credit” song of this movie. Try to check it like this. For me, The story goes in that way but It's my personal appreciation of the album.
devil wouldn't regonize you is one of my favorite Madonna songs I knew you will love it someday :D (im waiting a bunch of your videos this night, sorry I've been lost but here again Beth) thanks for this reviews. I truly enjoy you! :D
The lack of cohesion in MDNA is because she didn't even know what album she wanted to make, she explains that the divorce had left her with a lot of emotions that she didn't even understand in her moods. It has its good parts, I grew fond of Love Spent and Beautifull Killer ❤
I like what you pointed out about Madonna's vocals on Gang Bang vs True Blue. That's the beauty of her vocals. IMO, she's the most versatile vocalist ever. If you consider her entire catalog, the different vocal treatments she gives throughout is astounding. No singer can convey a ballad the way Madonna does. No singer can convey the party vibe of a dance song like Madonna can. No one can convey the urgency of a message in a song like Madonna can. No one can convey the playfulness of a playful song like Madonna can. This album, for me, was just like Hard Candy, though this one drove much harder, in a good way. I loved half of it and I loathed half of it. Give Me All Your Luvin' would have been 10x's better without the cheerleading chants. Love Girls Gone Wild, Gang Bang, I'm Addicted, and Turn Up the Radio. Masterpiece is a masterpiece and Falling Free is gorgeous. Yes the production is chaotic, but don't forget the title of the album 🙂
"Masterpiece" is pretty but am I the only one who thinks it's not one of her best ballads? She has so many beautiful slow slongs and this one would probably be near the bottom for me.
@@senorgato70 I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who's ever thought this. Madonna's voice has radically changed album after album and even over the course of a single album or song. Even in regards to that she's the ultimate chameleon.
“Gang Bang” and “Masterpiece “ are my top favorite tracks. Even from the first listen I was obsessed with GB. Constant repeat! You should have listed to the deluxe version. “Best Friend” is my fav!!!
Your movements during... priceless :) Best for me are "I'm addicted" as it seems to rearrange my brain every time I listen to it. And "Beautiful Killer"... that one was and still is on constant repeat. Enjoy that when you listen to it.
@@carolinadiaz3618 Yep... true... "masterpiece" is the third one on that list. I remember I'm addicted live! Damn that was good! Beth... let us know what you think of "Beautiful Killer" because that SHOULD have been a single!
There's a GREAT reference to one of her carreer's alter ego's (from Erotica) in GGW music video (can't wait to see you start her videography reactions!)
I knew you were going to like "Devil Wouldn't..." :) and with this one I think it's chaotic at times both in sounds and in her voice but I like it a lot, and the bonus tracks are very good too. The video for Give Me All Your Luvin' is really fun!
Let’s just say the MDNA tour being one of her best tours of all time, being this far in her career is super impressive. She gave her ALL in that show. Also the songs live make you love them way more. Girl gone wild is one of her best performances in a tour! 👏🏽
YES!!! Revisit CONFESSIONS!! The TOUR is epic and I know you have it (hopefully) on your list and I understand that trying to get concert footage uploaded is tricky with copyrights. I loved the tour so much I bought it on DVD (yes, I recall you don't have a DVD player LOL) and bought the CD as well - I enjoyed the "retro remix" vibe of that concert - The 80's aerobics mix of Erotica, the disco mashup of Music and Disco Inferno on rollerskates, the opening equestrian visuals and mix of "Future Lovers/I Feel Love" - and the amazing remix of "Like a Virgin" is simply a BANGER in itself! The entire show is phenomenal! I hope you are able to view the concert someday soon. Also - please consider digging into Madonna's filmography - she has had many fantastic roles in iconic movies throughout the years. Lasty, I gotta shout out a suggestion to please check out JANET JACKSON!! Please please please?? LOL I think you'd be happily shocked at her masterpiece album "The Velvet Rope" - of course her 80's and 90's albums are Pop Gold - which paved the way for the likes of Britney and even P!nk. Janet is not just a Jackson Pop Icon - she truly is The Blueprint (much like Madonna, MJ, etc) - IMHO! Beyond my ramblings - many blessings and thank you for sharing your music journey with all of us - I appreciate your honest feedback and it's fun watching you discover some real "gem" songs to cherish in your life going forward!! Take care!! 🎶
So happy you liked Masterpiece. It's literally a song I love so much, that I could listen to it everyday and not get bored with it. Definitely the best song on this album by far. Watching you're reaction vid, had made like the album more than I did before though.
i consider this the *britney jean* of Madonna. its her most hated album by the fans but honestly i dont think its THAT bad however the tour is literally soo good like omg its worth a watch
Another amazing reaction video. Love Spent and Falling Free are my fav songs on this album. Incorporating banjo in a pop song? Genius. Love Spent also has a really good acoustic version you may prefer more. Falling Free near the end makes you feel so relaxed and at peace. You are right about the ins and outs of the vibes in some songs. It's still an amazing artistic album though. It does deserve more appreciation. Love your Madonna reactions they are amazing and you totally get it! Thanks for sharing, fortunately there's still quite a bit of M for you to discover :)
Half of the tracks are made exclusively for the album; the rest are from the movie, but they are very coherent as a whole. The style is different from anything you’ve heard from her; it’s swing and jazz. Her vocals are exceptional and quite different from what you’re used to from her.
I'm Breathless has a lot of different musical styles, but it has to be given a genre, so it's classed as Jazz. But it's not. It is in turns cinematic, torch-song, swing, comedy, big band, new jack swing, cabaret, dance, house music. It has 30s, 40s, 50s, and 90s sounds. That sounds incohesive but it absolutely works. Just like Madonna made the 50s influences work on True Blue, and the 60s/70s on Like a Prayer.
@@BethThereseReacts Many people have done reactions to them on here - not sure how they get past the copyright issues. Maybe you could ask one of them?
By segments would be safer and cutting (like the albums), the tour doesn't need to be all the time on screen too, we know them by heart. The first and second tour doesn't seem to have copyright problems at all
I loved seeing you journey through I'm Addicted LOL. MDNA is a mixed bag, when it's good it's good, and when it's bad it's bad. Some songs I don't like have moment's I LOVE. So for me the album was mid, but I don't hate it. P.S. the Hung up break was hilarious.
Turn up the radio. It's pretty generic. Seems like it was forced, to me. Lol the way Nelly Furtado did her song Sh*t on the radio, it didnt seem forced to me. Hmm @@BethThereseReacts
Please react to the Deluxe album tracks: 1) Best Friend 2) I fucked up 3) Beautiful Killer 4) Birthday Song And also, there's an acoustic version of Love Spent ( A whole different vibe)
You’re a trooper! All of madonnas albums! Check! Thank you for this wonderful review collection. It made me revisit albums as well. And reminders of why I love or don’t enjoy certain tracks. Someone else’s opinion is good too. Makes you think different. Appreciate your hard work. She’s got lots of live concerts and music videos. It’s a lot. But thank you for tackling this. Thank you!!!!!
I think MDNA, while a divorce album, takes a unique perspective on love, loss, and the dissolution of her second marriage. Its track list essentially showcases the spectrum of human emotions you can feel towards one person. It’s chaotic, not defined or limited to one emotion or experience. It’s an interesting reflection of a relationship. The parallels she makes towards drug/rave culture, with codependent relationships, and how the album is sequenced. It’s tragically beautiful and it feels like an acid trip, a great high, a line in the bathroom… I could go into each song and explain how it fits into that mold but I do genuinely feel like this album has a charm to it. It feels like what Hard Candy wanted to be. It chased the trends of the time, but it has a timeless quality - which Hard Candy lacked imo. Anywho, I liked your reaction lol
In mention of Masterpiece being on this album....She was directing a movie around this time also. She was going to sing a song for the film....she also had an album due....so...you know.....1 + 1 is 2.
Looking forward to your surprised reaction to the surprising I'm Breathless album. While its classed as "jazz", it actually has a lot of different musical styles, such as: cinematic, torch-song, swing, comedy, big band, musical theatre, burlesque, new jack swing, cabaret, dance, house music. It has 30s, 40s, 50s, and 90s sounds. That sounds incohesive but it absolutely works. Just like Madonna made the 50s influences work on True Blue, and the 60s/70s on Like a Prayer.
@@BethThereseReacts be warned! I’m Breathless is a very uneven listen! She was again doing A LOT. Starring in Dick Tracy, working on a world tour, at the height of her fame. Breathless wasn’t the official soundtrack to the film, but it’s also not a traditional studio album. It comes off very patchwork. You have Vogue tact to the end, originally planned as a B-side to Like A Prayers final single “Keep it Together” until it popped off. It has the tender “Something To Remember”, a ballad reflecting on her failed marriage to Sean Penn (also written during the LAP sessions) and then you have a bunch of goofy attempts by Madonna to capture that 1930s swing/jazz sound. Tracks like Sooner or Later (Sondheim produced, won an Oscar, solid song) that show depth and artistry, then you have cringe comedy tracks like I’m Going Bananas, Crybaby, Hanky Panky & Now I’m Following You Pt 2… Best of luck on that album. It’s definitely a journey! And fans have mixed feelings…
I think after Confessions Madonna struggled piecing together a cohesive album. IMO, Hard Candy + MDNA = Rebel Heart, where she perfected the formula for a modern Madonna album. RH is not cohesive but it's just full of bops & ballads. I love Madame X, but that's its own thing lol. Great reaction ❤
I kinda disagree with this, Hard Candy is very cohesive - I'm not a huge fan of it, but every track sounds like it belongs to the album, it has a voice. MDNA is all over the place, the stuff done by William Orbit is leagues better than everyone else's work. Rebel Heart is also all over the place, but the song writing and production are stronger. Madame X I agree is it's own thing.
One other thing, I really appreciate the way you react. It’s SO honest. The way you can hate a song and a minute later be like I think I love this is exactly how music is meant to be. You also have amazing comedy timing I love it 🥰
CANNOT wait for I'm Breathless. Again, a totally different sound. What Madonna did with this album (not a soundtrack but inspired by the film Dick Tracy) is what Gaga did with Harlequin and Joker. Curious to hear your opinion.
I think MDNA’s major issue is they should be separate EPs with the separate producers. When you see the track list ‘1. Some Girls 2. I’m a Sinner 3. Love Spent 4. Masterpiece 5. Falling Free’ it makes a lot more sense; these are the Orbit tracks.
Here’s the tracklist I made for myself using the bonus songs from the deluxe which in my eyes fits with the narrative you unpicked in the beginning of the album. I’d recommend re-listening the album with this track list: 1. Girl Gone Wild 2. Gang Bang 3. I’m Addicted 4. Best Friend (sonically this fits here so well and is more fitting than the dud that is Turn Up the Radio) 5. Give Me All Your Luvin (this was the single so had to keep it) 6. Some Girls 7. Beautiful Killer 8. I Don’t Give A 9. I F***** Up 10. Love Spent 11. Masterpiece 12. Falling Free You can probably swap Some Girl for I’m a Sinner tbh which I’m not too fond of sonically but again it fits the narrative better
Love this so much! I might even tweak my playlist a bit more in line with yours. Mine has a slightly different narrative from Anger to Party let loose, to Idealised memories of the r/ship, then realising the mistakes you both made, to acceptance of the loss/moving on: Girl Gone Wild Gang bang I'm addicted Turn up the radio GimmeAYL - Party Rock mix Beautiful Killer Masterpiece I f$%@ed up Love Spent Best friend Falling free
Thanks for your videos! I had a lot of fun with your reactions. There is a song, I’ll Remember, by Madonna, it has a music video, and it is not on any studio album, because the song was for a movie, but I think you will like it a lot. Finally, I must add that after the album Music, Madonna has not had, unfortunately, a number one single in the US. There are several factors, but it begins with the album American Life, which was very poorly received by the public in the United States, due to its political comments and music videos. And, adding that since the nineties Madonna’s age had been pointed out, unfortunately, this only made the opinion about her age become more pronounced. The album Confessions on a Dance Floor was very successful, all over the world, but the American public was still thinking about the previous album. And from then on the music industry was changing a lot, it was a very volatile time, with piracy of records, free downloads and competition was booming, new artists much younger were beginning to sweep the market. I would say that Hard Candy and MDNA, the result of all this, were a blow to Madonna's career. Let's say we're in 2007, and Madonna knows that she's just made two excellent albums, but that they're not performing as well as the previous ones in the US. And that's very important, because if there's a country that exports culture and entertainment like no other, that's the United States. Add to that the divorce and who knows what else, the point is that it was a very fragile time, and what you want is to be played on the radio and to be heard by new generations. These albums reflect how difficult it is to reinvent the image and sound of an artist, who has the previous challenges that I'm mentioning. Curiously, I can also assure you that Madonna's tours from 2000 to 2012 are all incredible, one after the other, bigger and more ambitious, from production to sales. Since the beginning of her career, Madonna is by far an artist of great weight in terms of the contribution to the development of this industry, an unprecedented phenomenon that has been and will continue to mark the future of this area and the future of the artists who are part of it. This is possibly one of the greatest prides of Madonna fans, and possibly of Madonna herself, her ability to attract people is very strong and resonates through generations. And let me say that Madonna's biggest tours, so far, were for the albums Hard Candy and MDNA. Thanks for reading!! Bye!
To understand this album you've got to watch THE MDNA Tour is a journey from darkness to light. Trust me is a piece of art. Hope you'll react to it! Love from Argentina 🇦🇷
Love Spent, Masterpiece and I'm addicted are the only Madonna worthy songs for me on this album. MDNA was the first and only time she dropped the ball with an album. The tour is great though.
Just 2 seconds in and I'm so happy to see you liking DWRY. To be honest: on your reaction I was a bit sad that it didn't click with you cuz I thougt you would love it. Glad to see, that it just need some time 🙂
MDNA is one of my favourite albums of Madonna’s. This is 2012 album and this is the reason why it has that club EDM production typical for that time and again that is the reason why I do connect to it so much (vetu nostalgic for me). I do agree that this album contains some messy songs that I don’t have to ever listen to again (like Turn Up the Radio or I’m a Sinner) but again first three trucks : Girl Gone Wild Gang Bang I’m Addicted FIRE ! ❤️🔥 I also love „Some Girls” (it remindes me to „I Like it Rough” from the Fame 🙃) , „I Don’t Give a” and „Love Spent” (beautiful songs) Like you said it’s her divorce album. That’s why the lirycs of some of the songs are so ambiguous, because in fact it shows the mess of this toxic relationship. She wants to break free but in the same time she is addicted to that feeling of safety, physical touch. But in the last truck she broke through it. She’s like „You came info my life, you made this really chaotic (like some of the songs literally) you did what you had to do but now I’m finally free from you and I’m going to live my own life” I might be wrong but that’s what I’m getting from this album. Also fun fact : the reason why the album is called MDNA is that MDMA is an abbreviation of Methylenedioxymethamphetamine (extasy) which is in fact a party drug used on raves (where this kind of EDM music often plays) and she replaced the letter M by letter N to make an abbreviation to her name „Madonna” . SO literally she is telling us that she is that „party drug” and she wants us to Dance to this album and feel that „distortion” (like on the album cover) 🙃
Superstar is about her ex boyfriend. At that time she was already dating one of her upcoming MDNA tour dancers Brahim Zaibat. She was so in love for him, and wrote this song during MDNA recording sessions.
Gang bang and Love Spent are my favs too! Well, and Masterpiece like c'mon now. You should react to the deluxe cause my other two fav songs are from the deluxe lol
@@BethThereseReacts Their relationship wasn't abusive, that was her first marriage to Sean Penn (referenced in the Like a Prayer album). For this one I think it was just emotional and financial.
@@FindingMadonnaactually, it was abusive. MDNA is the album where she realized how toxic Guy actually was... and how she changed herself to fit his idea of her... and it didn't help that he took 90 million of her hard earned money on his way out.
@@soundslike1life after the horseback fall accident Madonna realized he didn't love her. There was a sense of violence more than abuse, more of "silent ignore you" kinda violence. Sometimes saying nothing or staying silent can be more damaging. Then there's the songs "best friend" and "I Fu**ed Up" completely dedicated to Guy Ritchie and their relationship, where she accepts she wasn't also the best wife 😬
@@soundslike1life well, let’s be fair to both of them. It’s not his fault that she married him without the prenuptial agreement. And it’s not his fault that she’s a control-freak who could not accept that her husband had other interests besides her. HOWEVER, it is his fault for treating this marriage like a brazilian jiu-jitsu match. And instead of discussing the terms of this -marriage- match, he'd rather have a beer with the lads in a pub…
Gimme All Your Luvin is a carbon copy of Hello by Dragonette and Martin Solvieg. That’s where you heard it. MDNA was late to the EDM party. Hence the irony of her saying “all music sounds the same..”
I can understand that people may not like MDNA because it is jarring, but it is completely made on purpose to be like that. Something that nobody says or gets about this album is that even though Madonna was not super explicit about it, MDNA is a concept album that compares off-limit human emotions with the effects of drugs. Each song, including the bonus tracks, represents a different drug musically, aesthetically and lyrically. That's why the album sounds messy, loud and inconsistent, and that's the consistency and concept of it. I'll try to summarize it very quickly: -Girl Gone Wild: Tanqueray/Poppers: a super gay and frivolous thing. -Gang Bang: Metamphetamines: people can get almost cannibal-level violent. -I'm Addicted: MDMA: pure fake ecstasy, like infatuations. -Turn Up The Radio: LSA: it's retro, it was used in the 50s to get a sense of happiness. -GMAYL: Anabolic Steroids/Wine: the video explains it, self-grandiosity disguised as pop. -Some Girls: PCP/Angel dust: extreme despersonalization and loss of ego and shame. -Superstar: mushrooms: super happiness and idealization. -I don't give A: Crack (I can do ten things all at once, F you, nough said) -I'm A Sinner: LSD, the psychedelic and eventually indulgent experience of discovering the meaning of life and religion. -Love Spent: Cocaine: love and money spent, the high and the lowest low. -Masterpiece: Amphetamine: it keeps you up, thinking, admiring, feeling too much. -Falling Free: Opium, to heal the pain, to get quiet. -Beautiful Killer: Heroin, a beautiful killer you cannot leave. -I Fucked Up: Alcohol, just read the lyrics. -B-Day Song: Weed: is it my birthday? I'm happy, who cares? -Best Friend: GHB, with a little bit you're happy, with too much you're dead. The edge between the good and the bad.
Wow. Um, I really don't think this album was thought-through that well since it was very rushed and Madonna was busy editing her film, which was her main focus at the time, but kudos for that detailed interpretation!
I think you're giving the album too much credit here. At the end of the day the writing and production on a lot of the tracks is poor, which is why it ranks poorly with fans. Some of the tracks were bought as well, so I don't think the analysis really flies, but I appreciate the interpretation.
I love your reactions! I hope to see soon the reaction to the album I'm Breathless and the rest of the singles, such as: Causing a Commotion, Express Yourself (Single Version), Justify My Love, Rescue Me, I'll Remember, You'll See, Beautiful Stranger, Celebration. And I don't know how familiar you are with Tove Lu's music, but it would be nice to do a reaction to Lady Wood. I think this is the kind of album that you will really like.
The album gave us one of her best Tours ever and I can’t wait for you to react to that at a certain point, especially the performances of Girl Gone Wild and Gang Bang are absolutely insane and iconic. Too bad you didn’t do the bonus tracks because two of my favs are part of that bunch of tracks: “I F*cked Up” and “Beautiful Killer”, those are top tier tracks! I wonder what’s next in your Madonna journey… music videos, tours, live performances, so much to potentially get into ☺️👍🏻
This channel is like Abe Lincoln, 'cause it fights for what's right. . Anyway, I always thought there was one really great album between MDNA and Hard Candy. And here's a vote for doing both the videos and her concert tours. She is absolutely unparalleled and a pioneer in both, and both are central pieces to her overall artistry and success. The first two tours are kinda dorky in a fun, cheesy 80s way, but the rest absolutely changed how pop concerts were done.
Beth you are amazing- and I’m so happy to be saying that. For someone who is autistic, and struggles with words at times, you are just incredible, warm hug you are all around , when is it your birthday?🎁 so I can give you a comment- happy birthday queen. You deserve this recognition absolutely! Well done for surviving MDNA- its number 9 on my album ranking, you are a mint of fresh air, and can’t wait to see more from you with Madonna ❤️❤️❤️
Old school Madona fans don’t love this and hard candy although to me Hard Candy and MDNA are among my top Madonna albums. Been a fan since 1984. Older fans feel “safer” w her older music or when she’s in “her lane” I welcome the newness.
hard candy is a really good album, imo! i enjoy most of the tracks; the only one that i still cannot stand is 'devil wouldn't recognize you', it just bores me so much. i wish she replaced it with 'animal', such a good song
MDNA/the MDNA tour holds a special place in my heart because it was the only time I've seen Madonna live and it was a *fantastic* show. I think the Confessions Tour is her best but it was still amazing. There are some really great singles from MDNA but it doesn't seem as cohesive an album as her past ones. Turn Up the Radio and I'm a Sinner are 2 of my faves and I love that she worked with WIlliam Orbit again. I'm glad you finally got to the album, I was so excited to see this post this morning! (And the Girl Gone Wild is the queerest video ever if you want to check it out, it's audaciously amazing.)
i knew u would love live spent. there is a supurior version of thst song on one of the deluxe/editions. u gonna love that one. i keep on watching the rest of the reaction now and i am excited if u gonna love masterpiece as much as i do.
Honestly feel like she wrote this album specifically for a tour. Songs meant for a performance rather than just listening to. She was still riding high from the success of the Stick & Sweet Tour and the halftime show and I think she was more focused on live performing than the music itself.
Great review! I liked a few more songs than you did. Girl Gone Wild is saved by the Offer Nissim remix. My favorites are Gang Bang, I’m Addicted, Some Girls, Love Spent (and the acoustic version), Masterpiece, and Falling Free. If you check out the MDNA tour, there is a great mashup of Best Friend and Heartbeat.
This album has zero effort put on it and you can see it. She was busy with her movie, launch of her perfume, still bitter with her divorce and zero focus on the music. The tour of this album tho, one of her best (for me it's top 2)
Many people don't understand the album, they think it's a bit lost and confusing... but that's because MDNA is an album made entirely with the visuals she wanted on the tour and there was no promotion or performances on TV shows, so that's why. As soon as it was released, she embarked on a tour with 81 shows, which was the most profitable and biggest of the time in 2012. That's why when you watch the tour, you understand much more the meaning and lyrics of the songs in the visual and artistic performance that she wanted to convey in the songs theatrically. Sorry for my bad English, I'm from Brazil hahaha

Always thought the banjo 🪕 intro to Love Spent was in direct reference to Guy who played the banjo.

MDNA era highlights (and some comments about your comments):

Thank you so much for this context it was very helpful 🫡♥️♥️♥️
No i haven’t but that’s a very cool concept and even cooler i felt that experience thru the music! ♥️♥️♥️
I'm so glad I found your channel recently and after digging into your Avril reactions, I'm here loving your Madonna's one.
MDNA has a lot of context:
1. It's her "Divorce & Revenge" album. A lot of people say that It's "Like a prayer" from her first marriage but we all know that "Like a Prayer" is more of a "Death, reflection and rebirth" album,
2. As some say, "Deluxe tracks" are essential to connect with the whole message and artistic choices. BUT MDNA has a big problem (and It's not the EDM), it's that the tracklist got all over the place and does not tell her storyline correctly. For me, the best order should be:
-Girl gone wild as introduction of the album
- Gang bang as a “the start of a ride of deception and contempt”
-Best friend: The “Divorce song”
- Love Spent “The realization of the breaking point”
- I Don’t Give as the Anger explotion
- I fucked up: The anger fades and she realized she made mistakes too and she thinks she wants to come back but then she realized she won’t do it.

The lack of cohesion in MDNA is because she didn't even know what album she wanted to make, she explains that the divorce had left her with a lot of emotions that she didn't even understand in her moods.
It has its good parts, I grew fond of Love Spent and Beautifull Killer ❤
Love Spent and Beautiful Killer are great tracks. 💯💙
You are going to LOVE the live version of Gang Bang, cause u nailed it hahaha
Hehehe☺️
Thank you, yeah great points!

@@senorgato70 I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who's ever thought this. Madonna's voice has radically changed album after album and even over the course of a single album or song. Even in regards to that she's the ultimate chameleon.

Well at least Madonna is singing in it, unlike Beitney Jean where Britney just sings bits 😂
Great point. It’s certainly not the piece of trash some fans say it is ((imo))

Do not skip I'm Breathless. It is possibly one of the best album she has ever made.
Really😮
Half of the tracks are made exclusively for the album; the rest are from the movie, but they are very coherent as a whole. The style is different from anything you’ve heard from her; it’s swing and jazz. Her vocals are exceptional and quite different from what you’re used to from her.
it's swing Jazz and has Vogue in it ❤❤❤
I'm Breathless has a lot of different musical styles, but it has to be given a genre, so it's classed as Jazz.

Good points!
Well said! This was my understanding of the album as well.
@@zanyzander Sounds like it will be a journey!
Tracks like Sooner or Later (Sondheim produced, won an Oscar, solid song) that show depth and artistry, then you have cringe comedy tracks like I’m Going Bananas, Crybaby, Hanky Panky & Now I’m Following You Pt 2…
Best of luck on that album. It’s definitely a journey! And fans have mixed feelings…

Love your Madonna album reviews/reactions (lifelong fan here) cannot wait for the live performance reactions 🎉🎉❤❤
@@angeladaji7815 Thank you so much bestie

"Girly, youthful & fun" is the best way to describe Madonna's vocals. Excellent review! Thanks!

"All the other kids with the pumped up kicks you'd better run better run, outrun my gun.." 🙂
One other thing, I really appreciate the way you react. It’s SO honest. The way you can hate a song and a minute later be like I think I love this is exactly how music is meant to be. You also have amazing comedy timing I love it 🥰
Thank you so much 🥹♥️
CANNOT wait for I'm Breathless.

Definitely listen to the Deluxe tracks there are some bangers there. Beautiful Killer is one of my favourite songs and I love Best Friend
🫡👍🏻
Here’s the tracklist I made for myself using the bonus songs from the deluxe which in my eyes fits with the narrative you unpicked in the beginning of the album. I’d recommend re-listening the album with this track list:
1. Girl Gone Wild
2. Gang Bang
3. I’m Addicted
4. Best Friend (sonically this fits here so well and is more fitting than the dud that is Turn Up the Radio)
5. Give Me All Your Luvin (this was the single so had to keep it)
6. Some Girls
7. Beautiful Killer
8. I Don’t Give A
9. I F***** Up
10. Love Spent
11. Masterpiece
12. Falling Free
You can probably swap Some Girl for I’m a Sinner tbh which I’m not too fond of sonically but again it fits the narrative better
Love this so much! I might even tweak my playlist a bit more in line with yours. Mine has a slightly different narrative from Anger to Party let loose, to Idealised memories of the r/ship, then realising the mistakes you both made, to acceptance of the loss/moving on:
Girl Gone Wild
Gang bang
I'm addicted
Turn up the radio
GimmeAYL - Party Rock mix
Beautiful Killer
Masterpiece
I f$%@ed up
Love Spent
Best friend
Falling free

MDNA is one of my favourite albums of Madonna’s. This is 2012 album and this is the reason why it has that club EDM production typical for that time and again that is the reason why I do connect to it so much (vetu nostalgic for me). I do agree that this album contains some messy songs that I don’t have to ever listen to again (like Turn Up the Radio or I’m a Sinner) but again first three trucks :
Girl Gone Wild
Gang Bang
I’m Addicted
FIRE ! ❤️🔥
I also love „Some Girls” (it remindes me to „I Like it Rough” from the Fame 🙃) , „I Don’t Give a” and „Love Spent” (beautiful songs)
Like you said it’s her divorce album. That’s why the lirycs of some of the songs are so ambiguous, because in fact it shows the mess of this toxic relationship. She wants to break free but in the same time she is addicted to that feeling of safety, physical touch. But in the last truck she broke through it. She’s like „You came info my life, you made this really chaotic (like some of the songs literally) you did what you had to do but now I’m finally free from you and I’m going to live my own life”
I might be wrong but that’s what I’m getting from this album.
SOME GIRLS REMINDS ME OF I LIKE IT ROUGH TOO OMG 💕
Superstar is about her ex boyfriend. At that time she was already dating one of her upcoming MDNA tour dancers Brahim Zaibat. She was so in love for him, and wrote this song during MDNA recording sessions.

I'll try to summarize it very quickly:
-Girl Gone Wild: Tanqueray/Poppers: a super gay and frivolous thing.
-I don't give A: Crack (I can do ten things all at once, F you, nough said)
-I'm A Sinner: LSD, the psychedelic and eventually indulgent experience of discovering the meaning of life and religion.
The edge between the good and the bad.
very interesting thank you for that breakdown!

The MDNA Tour was one of her best, second only to Confessions. The album itself was decent, but the tour was phenomenal
Interesting, sounds like hardy candy 2.0!
Gang Bang has Bad Guy by Billie Eilish vibes
This album has zero effort put on it and you can see it. She was busy with her movie, launch of her perfume, still bitter with her divorce and zero focus on the music. The tour of this album tho, one of her best (for me it's top 2)
You forgot a bonus japanese track in Hard Candy album ,Ring my Bell
Ohh that’s right
Many people don't understand the album, they think it's a bit lost and confusing... but that's because MDNA is an album made entirely with the visuals she wanted on the tour and there was no promotion or performances on TV shows, so that's why. As soon as it was released, she embarked on a tour with 81 shows, which was the most profitable and biggest of the time in 2012. That's why when you watch the tour, you understand much more the meaning and lyrics of the songs in the visual and artistic performance that she wanted to convey in the songs theatrically.
