You guys said you didn't know much about 'Nutcracker lore' before watching this movie so perhaps you should consider reading a little about Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite ballet. I was taken to see a movie version of this as a child. It still haunts my Christmases. As far as I can see, this movie captures the essence of that ballet perfectly, or it would if you took out the happy ending. Like operas, few ballets have happy endings.

Kids love the Nutcracker! But you know what they love even more? Nazis! So we put them together! And Nathan Lane as Einstein, because history is a frightening and vague concept
