    I would give up a billion dollars to live simply on my own land surrounded by nature, with my family, animals and plants, far away from other humans. I would eat well, breathe fresh air, trade honest labor into bountiful harvest. That is true wealth. That is true meaning.

    • @davidzahry
      @davidzahry 7 років тому +15

      My friend, I would have to say look out at the world. It has been shown that this can be created in the cities if we are willing. Getting away from other humans will not solve any problems. There is an old saying that rings truer today than it ever has. "Anyone can become enlightened in the mountains. It is time we become enlightened in the city."

      Wouldn't it be smarter to spend like 50-100k on a nice piece of land, and then have just under a billion dollars left for whatever?

      BeRealisticLove Me too but I'm 49 (just!). But we started living like this when I was around 24.
      We grow a lot of our own stuff and keep chickens for eggs (hope to get a couple of ducks soon too- mainly because we love them as they are such characters!). We even used to brew our own cider and beer.
      I want to try to live a self sustaining life as possible and also rescue and rehome animals, particularly horses and others labelled as 'livestock'.
      Go for it: it's the best way of living a real life. Best of luck to you x.

    Awwww.... it just makes my day seeing Donald enjoy that pool! SO thoughtful of you to give him one. He is a "Proud Grandpa" to those little ducklings.... SO adorable.... I LOVE zinnias too! Grew up with them as my dad planted them in our garden every single year along with gladiolas, Hollyhocks, roses and potted geraniums. I can't believe how many butterflies you have there and bees, enjoying all those wonderful flowers. SO lovely!!! You are SUCH a sweetheart Bri and I adore hanging out with you. I noticed the goats following you were together in matching colors pretty much. The blacks were all together, the browns and even the lighter colored two. How cute is that!! It's such a JOY to come to your place for a visit. :) Thank you! Love and blessings.... XOX

    Zinnia is my absolute favorite flower ever. I've never seen a video about them b4. I use them to line my driveway and tuck lavender, dill, basil and other herbs, along with some marigold in between. But it's the zinnia that brings so many butterflies to my yard. At the time of the monarch migration, you cannot enter my door way without having a multitude of butterflies landing on you as you come in. Love this video!!

    Love your channel! We have a house in the mountains of W./NC. Just saw the rattlesnake/blueberry picking video. Rattle snakes are usually in the rocky areas, but also eat birds that feed off blueberries/blackberries. Western NC has more copperhead bites than any state in the U.S. They strike without warning. The baby copperheads are born live in July-Aug. and are very active and venomous. We were taught to hike, pick berries, etc. and carry a large walking stick. We prodded around with the stick BEFORE putting our hands or feet in. Did the same when working in the garden. It's fun to make good, sturdy walking sticks, plus they're so useful. God bless!!

They will actually reseed themselves (or at least the California Giants will) and when they come up each year I let them grow enough to get a few leaves then I dig them up and transplant them where I want them. I can relate to the duck pool- we would scoop the water out and use it again on the garden or tip it out under trees. This time we're going to use a real 2nd hand bath and raise it slightly so that we can just pull the plug to empty it on the veggie garden.
    And the kids are so sweet- a great life for them.

    I ADORE zinnias! When I visited our kids' college campus (Go Herd!) one fall their ornamental zinnias had gone to seed to I plucked some and put in my pocket. I replanted the next spring and continue to save seed. It's pretty neat growing beautiful zinnias with meaning behind them. Our sunflowers were shotty this year.....only some grew at all and most were very small and just now starting to flower. My Dad passed on a year and a half ago and my kids and I plant marigolds (his favorite) at the cemetery. They are beautiful, useful, strong flowers! Congrats on your successful homestead! God bless!

    I’m 18 and this has been a little dream of mine for quite a while now. Maybe something on a smaller scale, but you are giving your children one of the greatest gifts by raising them in this environment and giving them nothing but love. This seems like a life that would be very beneficial to me given the childhood and upbringing i had which was in dangerous parts of cities and i missed out on a caring and care free atmosphere. I’m sure there are a lot of hard things you must deal with, but you truly are rich.

  • @GaryHardin

    Pull up the plants and either seal them tightly in a trash bag, or secure them under black plastic, where the sun's heat can kill the spores. Do not compost blight-infected plants. Best solution out there and works quickly. You're basically smothering the blight. Oddly, this is also a situation where compost isn't a good thing around tomato plants.

    • @GaryHardin
      @GaryHardin 7 років тому +5

      If the blight isn't too bad, then you can cover the plant itself with black plastic in the heat of the day, checking regularly so the plant doesn't bake, a little wilting doesn't hurt. For the really bad plants though pull them up completely and use the method of sealing them in black plastic to completely kill the blight. The compost around the tomato plants doesn't let the Sun do its job and kill the blight in the soil. Another way to help with this is use raised beds for your tomato plants again no mulch.

    We live in a quaint little house in the city. I have a perennial garden at the front of our house that include an array of lillies and a hearty type of rose. Pollinators have enjoyed the roses very much. This year I plan to add another perennial garden along one side of our sidewalk that will include bulbed plants. I've been able to create some beautiful bouquets with the lillies that I have given to others.
    A few years ago we gave one of the two parking spots up behind our home to create a garden. It is just 13' x 23' but I have been able to use vertical gardening for some things to maximize its space. I also use space along our chain link fence to grow climbing produce such as peas and green beans and have pots hanging at the top of the fence for other things. We have plenty of yard space that we could use too, but the trees around our yard keep it shaded most of the time.

    Rich indeed! Love your homestead, glowing enthusiasm. The quietness, nature, flowers and growing. Omg. Amazing! I LOVE your goats and dairy cow! I’m part way towards the lifestyle you have, just need a little bit more land and to get away from a horrid busy main road. Keep on being rich! Xx

    Zinnias are SO easy to grow! Including very drought tolerant. The only problem I have with them is powdery mildew, but that comes late in the season, after we've had three months to enjoy them.
    LOVE that perspective about having flowers! Bouquets from the store are expensive. I never looked at it that way.

    Gracey is a natural. She's got great instincts with both the animals and the plants.
    Over here the volunteer tomatoes don't have blight and the non-volunteers have been sprayed multiple times with Patara's solution of baking soda, soap, and cooking oil. It works. Works also for the white powdery mildew on the squash and zucchini leaves.
    The volunteers will be ripening late but that's okay.

    My definition of rich is so much like yours, despite no longer having land, or even my own home I'm also rich in love and blessings but, so many of us can't afford to buy the land that it takes to homestead on . Nice goal to have but so few of us will realize the dream, especially if we once got close and lost it for reasons beyond our control. I've enjoyed see your joy exhibited in this video, especially because you have little children and there is no place better to raise children than on a healthy piece of productive land. Good for you for being willing to do the work, because it would not work for lazy people. Lovely flowers and food; may God continue in his grace and mercy He's poured out on you and your family and homestead.

    What does your husband do for work? How much property do you own? How long have you lived on this property? How old are your children? Boys / girls? Do they help with chores? How did you acquire your property? Where do you live? As much info as you're comfortable with revealing would help a lot. Thanks for such a beautiful view of your country life.

    I only just discovered your channel and must say I LOVE it! Great homestead you've got there. I agree with you about the zinnias, they keep forever in a vase. In our garden, the bees don't like the zinnias as much (maybe it's a hybrid variety?), they rather go for the mallows (which take over the entire garden... - but I can really recommend them, especially for the bee population). Best wishes to you from Germany!
