    I miss when body positivity was focused on disabled people. I feel like disabled people are getting stepped over once again to make way for middle class fat (usually) white women who want to force people to be attracted to them. I feel like some of the loudest voices in that community now are the most insecure.

      It can be really revealing! You never realize how uneven some people's bodies are if they only show usually their top half which looks the same as airbrushed underwear models. Seeing that the bottom doesn't necessarily look that way at all can give you a whole new perspective and ways of appreciating bodies, whether your own or others. To be a little blunt, we all know what what a body with large amounts fat all over looks like because you can see that through the clothes. Insecure thin people can and do cover up effectively.

      I'm also autistic, and something literally nobody talks about is how we (autistic folks) are disproportionately financially preyed upon by HAES influencers. Many of us struggle to decode when someone is lying to us, we often have a deep intrinsic passion for social equity/justice, and have often co-occurring conditions that impact our hunger cues (such as interoceptive awareness dysfunction) making it very challenging to maintain normal eating habits or maintain a healthy weight. IMO, HAES influencers know we are "easily manipulated," and rely on vulnerable populations like us to fatten their pockets. Props to your sister for taking charge of her health - many of us autistic women especially suffer from varieties of eating disorders. I'm really happy to hear that she is doing well.

    As a person of colour who has suffered from different forms of eating disorders (anorexia, buliam and now EDNOS) since I was 8, I would just like to say that eating disorders are more mental than it is physical. I have met too many people who were on both ends of the weight spectrum, very fat and very skinny, with eating disorders and they were never once happy with the way they looked. This woman is extremely offensive and have absolutely NO knowledge about eating disorders.

    • @DragonFlightRider
      @DragonFlightRider 4 роки тому +9

      I wouldn't say that most people are making up an eating disorder as excuse to be fat and lazy. Michelle has shown posts from Fat Activists acting food addiction coaches because they don't believe food addictions or food disordered eating (for surplus amounts) exists. Most people probably don't even realize their weight could stem from deeper issues than just over eating.
      Family food culture exists too. If your whole family is overweight, because your parents always ordered take out, never set portion limits, etc, it would be very easy for someone to grow up and think "oh, I can't lose weight. My family is just built like this".
      I'm not trying to excuse anything, just that morbid obesity can be a physical battle and a mental one too.
      Imo, it's importantly to discuss both issues so that we can better support someone on the road to get healthier (:

When I started getting help and explaining it to my family members I explained it a lot like a eatting disorder because both have to do with controlling something in your life. 6:55 As a physically disabled person that almost made me laugh. I suffer from cerebral palsy. The entire right side of my body has trouble sending signals from the brain to my muscles( my right calf muscle is nonexistent because of this) , bones in my pelvic area are fused together, my right leg is about two inches shorter than my left, my right foot is a full shoe size smaller than the left, even the muscles on the right side of my face have a hard time keeping up with the left.
    I admit a look pretty normal for the most part if people don't notice how I walk and if they do there's always the "Oh why are you limping! Did you get hurt?" comment , then I explain. I've yet to finding anyone on social media that looks like me and I'm ok with that because everyone with cp or any other disability looks different. What I'm not doing is demanding others post pictures of me because "beauty standards". I've had a very hard time with my body do to people like this because it reminds me that body positivity wasn't made for me and I just think that's kind of sad. It makes me feel worst as I'm also a cosplayer (love you Michelle) and struggle with my costumes as I need glasses and struggle walking in certain shoes. So I feel like I don't belong in the community. There needs to be more representation of just bodies period.
    Everyone, your body and you are valid. Just try your best to stay healthy and work with what you got. Rant over lol.

    Thing is, I used to love body positivity because as a trans person, I worked hard to build a strong bond with my body and one way I did that was sculpting my body by working out and decorating my body through ink. Then in 2018 I went through hell with a massive infection that stripped me of all my new gains and brought me back to 0. I busted my ass to bounce back stronger and bigger (muscle mass wise). When I date, men tend to use me as fetish toy due to my transition and my body being ambiguous... so anyways, I thought as a nonconforming person body wise I could have community in body positivity but NOPE... since I am in fitness and "thin" (which I hate that word because it erases all my hard work at the gym), apparently I am the devil to them... especially since I look white due to my European heritage (but I am mix). Uhg. But now I found a true community through youtubers like Michelle, Swolenormous, Allan Roberts etc.
    Body positivity used to be about overcoming obstacles with your body and owning your body... now it purely celebrates obesity, something one can do things to improve it but choose not too... wtf.

      And how Meghan Trainor's song All About That Bass is problematic?
      And these associations of thinness with lack of curves and fatness with more curves
      And the subsequent association of thinness with being juvenile.
      I'm shocked at how far Tess Holliday has because people only seem to like insufficient people with hourglass or pear shape

      @Gbria Taylor I don't. :P I'm an ex-obese person, and I hate people who fat-shame. But I also know why this ideology appealed to me at the time.
      I was lazy and ignorant, and thought that my weight was due to bad genetics. While genetics does have something to do with it, I still had some say in the matter. I'll probably never be slim-slim due to my frame and issues, but I'm at least healthy, and that's all I care about.
      Some people probably don't realize that they're in control more than they think. Also, lots of people probably don't realize just how miserable their life will be if they don't get their weight in check.
      It's not about beauty, it's about health. I think of my overweight friends just as I do a friend who smokes. Meaning I still love them, I still think they're awesome and beautiful, etc. but I worry for their health, and really wish they'd wake up and realize their habits are killing them.
      So if there's a group over here telling those people whom I care about that naaah, they're fine. It's not their fault, and being 300 lbs is totally ok with zero negatives whatsoever, then ... yeah, I have a problem with that.
      The fat-positive movement is literally promoting death in that sense.

    • @ACZor86
      @ACZor86 4 роки тому +21

      @Gbria Taylor I'll add, too, that I do actually agree with the fat acceptance people on the shaming front. No one should be made to feel inferior because of the way they look, and I fully agree that overweight people can still be pretty.
      So if they'd stop it there, I could get on board. But when they spout things like "Health at every size," it makes me angry, because it's a very dangerous lie they're telling people.

    • @ACZor86
      @ACZor86 4 роки тому +18

      @Gbria Taylor The problem is that quite a few people in that movement think that even doctors are "fat phobic" if they bring up the patient's weight. There have been several articles of women demanding the choice to not be weighed, etc.
      Like I said, the "health at every size" part of it is the part most people following this channel take issue with, and the part I'm generalizing.
      But yeah, I agree people shouldn't throw personal insults for no reason. People are cruel and that sucks.

    Me and my sister in law were just talking about body shaming pregnant women and smaller women too. Growing up I was tiny but had a big butt and I got made fun of it all the time, I developed boobs at like 16 out of nowhere and was accused of getting breast implants. I got older and started working out and was super in shape and got made fun of because I had muscles, then fast forward to now, I gained about 35lbs since then and actually feel so much better at 150 and still in shape and now I get accused of breast implants, fat transfer to my butt and told that I'm too thick for a white girl, or I'm thick for a white girl. It annoys me so much when people think just because someone is thin they don't get teased and the racial comments on body need to stop too. Oh no a black woman can't be thin, oh no a white girl can't be curvy and have hips and butt. Also pregnant women need to stop being shamed for not gaining a lot of weight, even though its been a few years sarah stage was a super fit pregnant women and people bashed her like crazy. That shouldn't happen because if she gained 60lbs while pregnant nobody would bat an eye. Body positivity has begun to be obese acceptance.

    Just saw this and... sorry girl, no! I am a big girl, no hiding that. I am trying to make healthier lifestyle choices, not hiding that either.
    Seeing "skinny" girls embrace their flaws is perhaps one of the most uplifting and positive things for me, as a bigger girl. Cause, if they can flaunt their flaws, heck if they are "skinny" or "ideal" and they have flaws, then shoot, why can't I be out here loving me too. Plus, as I continue trying to live healthier, and once this weight is gone - lord knows my stretch marks, saggy skin, and other issues aren't going anywhere just because the weight does - so it is nice to see people embrace that. It is encouraging. The whole body positivity movement is about embracing your body. You have a body? Good! You get to be positive about that body, and all of the amazing things it does for you, warts and all! No one should be excluded from body positivity, especially when there are so many bodies (skinny bodies, fit bodies, disabled bodies, fat bodies, etc.) and not a one of them is 100% perfect. The whole word "positivity" is about embracing different sizes, shapes, colors, of bodies and uplifting each other regardless of the "imperfections" a cis-het-white-dominated societal lens paints on them.
    The thing that really gets me is that attempting to exclude any group of people from "Body Positivity" is entirely antithetical to the idea of it. It continues to set up dichotomies of what is "good", what is "acceptable", what is "right" - putting a moral value on a particular subset of bodies. Isn't the whole idea to invalidate societal norms that some bodies are "good" bodies and some are "bad" bodies? But then you out here saying, no, skinny girls, you cannot have this because your body isn't the "right type" of body? Isn't that the same moralizing nonsense you want to destroy?Get out of here with that!
    I am all about marginalized groups having their spaces. Not everything belongs to everyone. That's why there is a label of "Fat Acceptance" that is distinct from "Body Positivity" - they are two different things. You want to embrace big, go ahead. You can do that in both of those areas. But one, belongs to everyone, one belongs to a distinct group. There are layers of intersectionality here, but to conflate them just alienates people and destroys positive action.
    TEDx Talk over. Thanks for letting me rant! haha

    Based on Raffela’s posts shown here, it makes me highly doubt that she’s lacking in engagement because of the way her body looks. I know many plus sized Instagram influencers who are also in the body positivity movement who have 100k active followers. Sounds like her jealousy is manifesting into gatekeeping and being angry at the wrong things. It’s not anyone else’s fault that you’re boring and uninteresting af, Raffela. That’s a you problem. 🤷🏻‍♀️

    Recently stumbled across this channel and have been binge watching the content. I love the humor and love the personality. When she said that she didn’t want her business to be shared solely on her being a black business owner, I was like yes, thank you! Subscribe! I’m Native American and I’m proud of it but when that becomes my primary value instead of what I bring to the table as an individual, it becomes really cringey 😬. There should be room for individuality and growth but making everything about race discourages people to be better or even different. Keep doing what you’re doing!

    I think people “give more recognition to the thin influencers" because it is fascinating to see that a apparently perfect person is suddenly not that "perfect" anymore and how Michelle said people enjoy seeing their insecurities represented in the media because they don't feel like they are the only person who has that.

Even the slave owners from the past knew that black people were capable of being physically herculean, it's funny how the "anti racists" are basically saying all black women are/ should be fat and unhealthy LMAO

      In the black community thicker women are more often appreciated and it’s typically the thick you see now. Big ass, with boobs and thighs and then if you don’t have that you are seen as less of a woman. Similar to other cultures although I think we just put more emphasis on the ass and hips. Example- baby got back by sir mix a lot. Overall you don’t want to be fat, just not “ stick thin”because it’s typically not attractive to urban audiences.

It's so common to see obesity n overweight bodies in the BC that when you divert purposefully or are naturally like that, the majority will shame you for their own insecurities n lack of health-consiousness. Prioritize yourself, your own health, n happiness! 💛

    I think it's a shame that a part of the body positive community comes of as so hateful and negative (in my opinion), instead of supporting one and other regardless of ones size. If one person wants to be lean, underweight, overweight or fit, and wants to be proud of that, let them. It's their life. Being mean about it never helps.

      yeah they can decide to be fat or remain fat but then they shouldn't complain about their decision, and complain that people don't "like" them because of the body they chose to maintain. For one, being likeable has nothing to do with size, I have "fat" friends who are extremely great people and incredible friends to hang out with. This woman in the video is lacking self-confidence and projects it into hating the group of people who are different from her - non-fat people. It's typical, you hate on the people you believe you cannot ever be like. It's jealousy. I know this, been there when I was overweight. You eventually have to get over it and get your arse up from the couch and do something about it.

    What some of these women don't understand is that all of us- even models- are also critizied and no matter how our body looks it will never be perfect in society's eyes. One time, I was having what I thought to be a conversation with a person like this (she saw as if I was attacking her) because I didn't agree that the lack of bigger sizing could be solved if smaller people stopped buying overzise clothes. I said it was a fashion industry problem and that companies should be more diverse and they're the ones that need to make changes. After a while she told me I have an eating disorder because I explained to her I used to be chubby in HS. She told me that that was in my head and refused to compreend that tho I'm thin in USA/UK I'm not seen that way in my home country. This adding to her getting angry when I told her it was a struggle to find coats hat fit me (my top is xs-s and bottom L-m) because in her mind only people that look like her have trouble finding clothes that look good on their bodies. Because she didn't have anything else to say she told called me fatphobic and told me I would get blocked if I didn't stop hating...altought during the argument she was the only one hating on body fat+shapes (especially against underweight people). I find very ironic when they do hashtags on body positivity and then they´re the first ones shaming bodies and saying others have eating disorders when they're smaller or want/did lose fat. English is not my first language so....sorry if this is messy. xx

Bad skin can also partially come from digesting "wrong" food, and I don't mean junk food here, but just normal food can also cause a lot of issues. Regarding Raffela Mancuso, she needs to grow up. Instagram models who look "perfect" showing their imperfections is the entire point of body acceptance. It's acknowledging that a vast majority of people do not align with beauty standards unless they hide their flaws or edit their pictures. Raffela took a positive cause and made it all about her. It's extremely selfish and reveals the extent of Raffela's entitlement to receiving positive affirmation from others.
