When covid was just starting my engineering class took a field trip down in the tunnels. It was so sad to see that there was barely anyone there and most the shops and restaurants were closed at the time. It almost felt like an abandoned city
Is Houston really thriving? sure you can look at a map of our city decade to decade and see that its expanding but i feel like the cities interior is dying just as quickly with just the absolute massive swathes of closed down shopping centers adding to all the dead malls. Where i live 20 years ago it was pretty close to the edge of the city, now we are about 40 minutes away from the edge and theres just dead shopping centers in every direction. Its a completely different world here now. It feels like the city is dying
The tunnels are much emptier now after covid. They are open, but there are as many empty storefronts as ones still in business. The shops in the video (the area that is basically a food court) is a hollow shell now in 2023 of what is shown in the video. There's still a lot of foot traffic during lunch time, but it's not like it used to be.
Yea, well, Houston's tunnel is empty now too. Most of the people haven't come back to the downtown offices. In it's day, it was rockin. Especially during lunch
When harvey all those tunnels were under water, but this is Houston, we are so resilient bro. We die standing working hard. I dont know if you know this about Houston, but the south east and south part is full of refineries and chemical plants, i think it is like 465 total connected to the port of Houston and rail roads and freeways, working 24/7 the 365 days of the year. We have the biggest and better Hospital Center in the world, so for you to know, between the best cardiologists, guatemalans babba, plus we have nasa. We are the heart of the USA.
I’m a transplant from Minnesota, and the tunnels are almost exactly like the Skyway system in Minneapolis...except underground. No wonder Houston feels just like home.
Cool. Minnesota is one of the 12 continental states I haven't been too. I'll have to check that out when I get there. Good for snow, rain and excessive heat. When I first moved here, I used to pick up my ex-wife downtown. I used to wonder where everyone was. Until I learned about the tunnel system. Pretty cool. Thanks for watching.
I'd heard about the tunnels in Houston and still need to check them out. BTW, love the Go-Go music in the intro, I'm a DMV transplant living in Houston now.
Yea, it's extensive there. You just need to know which building to gain access. You just go into the lobby and they'll be an escalator down. I haven't been in a while, but before covid it was always busy. Shout out to a fellow DMV'r. GoGo every day. No joke, every day. Check out What band F everybody. Love it
Another couple of landmarks in downtown are the Aquarium and wortham theater center, in march I think, they will be hosting Shen Yun. If you take the metro train toward the west, it will get you to the NRG stadium where the texans play, right beside it is the astrodome.
Yep; I'm getting ready to post a video on bike around downtown. I'm going to use the train too. And also bike down to the museum district, zoo and medical center. Maybe over to the stadium if the weather is good.
Yea man, it used to be bustling before covid. Now it's almost completely empty. Even the restaurants have almost all gone. When it rains, that's where all the workers go. It's all over downtown. I'll have a new channel coming soon with more Houston facts and experiences. Keep an eye out for it. Thanks for watching
Wonder if those tunnels where originally constructed for trains? As someone who has spent lots of time in Europe the tunnels remind me of tubes for trains.
Yea man, mostly it was for workers to get from place to place. Especially for food and drink. If it rained, you wouldn't see anyone outside. That's where they were. But it's dead now with the office buildings being relatively empty
Thanks much. I'm going to start a new channel specific to Houston soon. Keep an eye out and subscribe and click the bell and you'll be sleeted for them
Fun fact the way the chicken is cooked is normally called Lebanese or Turkish but if you go to either country they get confused because its actually an invention from an Australian of middle eastern decent. The machines etc were invented in Sydney. In the middle east you get the meat spit roasted differently and in a bun.
I from houston and I knew some what about the underground tunnel system but let the truth be known all of this was for any major life or death event the people mainly who live and work downtown would be able to sustain some type of normalcy through out a such of an event originally it was secret for that reason only
Yea, you could live there for years and not know it. You need to know someone that works downtown. They'd be aware of it. Before Covid, it was packed every. Especially when it rains
Thanks much Bolu Aina; More Houston videos to come soon. Yes, the tunnel is still there. I walked it a few weeks ago, but almost completely empty. But you can escape the heat that way. Thanks for watching. Let me know if I could be of any assistance for your visit.
One view if the tunnel system. Title not related to video. 95% of downtown buildings have tunnel access. One could enter the tunnel system at old enron building and come out at chronicle building. Good Ole days.
The tunnel is all over downtown. There's entrances at most of the large building lobby's. If you drive around you'll see the signs. But just get out and walk. But it's dead now since downtown shutdown.
1 month before the pandemic hit and Gregg Abbott illegally shut Texas down. I wonder how many stores are there now. I found out about these tunnels from a friend of mine in 2020
@@dcbornrob I'm from St. Pete side of Tampa Bay that is my reference point. so to me this reminds me of one of our closed mall's only narrower and grittier. Too vanilla with fast food chain stores. Now downtown St. Pete and surrounding area has huge local shops, restaurant and retail vibe

@@dcbornrob We don't have an underground. Florida is porous sand. Nobody is saying its not beautiful surroundings but why waste all that beauty and great sunshine being under ground. Its a nice novelty to have but could have been utilized
I’ve been living here all my life.. 27 years later I’m finding out about this ..
LOL. It's not the same as it was, but it's still there.
Same bro
I remembered it was just big ass tunnel ppl was being transported from Jail to court
Been here since 94
When covid was just starting my engineering class took a field trip down in the tunnels. It was so sad to see that there was barely anyone there and most the shops and restaurants were closed at the time. It almost felt like an abandoned city
Yea, exactly. That's around the time of when I went through in this video. I need to check back to see how it is now.

Is the Tunnel back open now?
Should got some liminal space photos. Our tunnel system when empty is perfect for those kinds of photographs

This is fantastic! I had no idea about this. I wish Phoenix had something like this, geez! Thanks for sharing man!
Thanks for watching Michael. More Houston info to come.
Seriously Phoenix's downtown is so sad. It has potential but it just sits there all lonely. At least these tunnels are pretty busy. Pretty cool!
