Great vid, Hugh and thanks for pointing out that lenses can also be ‘too sharp’ and produce harsh and ugly focus transitions. Some manufacturers seem to strive for ultimate sharpness and thus create overly processed images, that do well at 300%, but ‘s*ck’ at 30x40. I’m using a couple of these Lumix S primes as back-up on my SL2 and SL2-S. For when the 24-90 or the 50 Lux-SL get too heavy. Which is mostly the case outside the studio. I’ve been very impressed by the 50 and the 85. I’ve also tried the others. The 35 and the 18 are also very good, but the 24 was a bit too soft for my taste. Nevertheless, considering the price and weight, these lenses deserve far more credit than they usually get. They can also take a serious ‘beating’ without having to worry about it too much. I’m looking forward to get my hands on the 100. Never mind a tiny bit of CA. Like you said, and what many people don’t seem to understand, most portraits and fashion is shot at f5.6 or smaller anyway…
If the rumors of the S1R II are somewhat true, might add that camera to my Lumix m43 system for higher-end work later this year. I mean, Lumix just keeps coming out with this fantastic gear! And this 100mm Macro would be on the lens list. People have been gushing all over the Internet about it. Great review video. Great night-shot.
An excellent over-view, sir. I started my macro photography with the Tokina AT-X PRO D 100mm F2.8 MACRO . After looking at your video, I have become excited about putting my foot back into the pool. Thank you for your production and the work it takes to put it out here, for us. Happy New Year to you, as well!
So pleased I invested in the S5ii at the end of last year - this lens hits my most wanted list immediately- thank you for the review and the most excellent channel
I appreciate your photography and gear reviews, but more so your ability to clearly and orderly communicate well organize thoughts, observations, and insights. I am spellbound and mesmerized, refusing to click out until the end! I wanted to get the skinny on this lens and I got it!
Ohhh that Beautiful watch! Brilliant, on so many levels; The Video isn't too shabby either. 😀 I’m excited to see Panasonic upping their game in not only the ‘L Mount,’ but M43 as well. I happen to like Panasonic, and looking forward to their next release in their high end Full frame bodies. Stay safe Hugh and Claudia. 😊🖖
I love your videos which focus (intended pun) more on use rather than box ticking of what other reviews seem to all adhere too all too often. I’m glad you focus on aspects of gear that you find interesting and not that box ticking…. And boy is the Panasonic s2 a very appealing camera. If I wasn’t now so invested in Sony I’d jump at one of these for my UA-cam channel.
I just shot a short film using the Lumix S Primes, 24mm, 50mm and 85mm - all on the DJI RS3 mini... (on the S5 II). The talent couldn't believe that we could get such cinematic looking footage from a package that fitted easily in a small camera bag.
Nice thoughts again sir ! For sure for 6 times less expensive than the APO and with all these benefits it can make one think hard between a used APO and this hyper versatile lens of such a pleasing focal length By the way it makes me think that I found a way to use my Nikon 105 f/1.4 Nikon Lens on the Leica SL with autofocus and this is just an APO 90 killer ! Try this if you can find the adaptor ring and the lens!…
Thinking of returning back to video purely as hobby, product brolls with varoius sliders and tripods but sometimes vlog on the go, no particular budget, used to have a panasonic 7yrs ago or so. Someone recommended sony a7iii/iv. But I feel sentimental towards panasonic. Any recommendations without going too deep into the rabit hole ? 😉
@@3BMEP im starting from scratch broll of a scene with desk, monitor that kind of thing, sometimes a close up of the item sometimes bit bigger for the talkong head
Panasonic lenses especially primes are unmatched in terms of their quality and price. but the body... no 40mp body in a long time makes it difficult to justify if one already has a 61mp camera from Sony or Leica. but this does mean Panasonic is competing with Nikon for similar crowds
Other than macro work, the Sigma 90mm F2.8 looks really good compared to the build quality of the Lumix. I love Lumix cameras (own 3 of them), but man their form factor on lenses is the ugliest in the game. Always feels cheap and light. But good video and its absolutely solid.

Thanks! And man: I hear you about this lens with an S1R II!
As always, thoughtful and well done!
Panasonic really heating up. Wow, what a lens.

OOS at B&H. I'm getting it as soon as I can. I love macro lenses. Also looking at getting the Fuji 30mm.

Feeling you, sold
Do I have an L mount system? No, no I do not.
Do I like hearing thoughtful people discuss the nuances of lenses?
You betcha.

Now, let's have a lightweight super telephoto!!!!
What would be your favorite S-Series Prime combination for street? 100 mm plus ?
Yes, plus 50, 24 and 18 all on S5 II
@@3BMEP nice!
Umm why not the 35mm?😅
What should be yoour budget lense suggestion for filmmaking of S5 X II?
The LUMIX S primes

You can get a used Sigma 28-70 f2.8 for ~600€
Do not understand why you don't have millions of subscribers.
Indeed. There is just no accounting for ‘taste’ these days and times.

I’ve pretty much sold all my Fuji gear after getting an S5II. Now thinking of selling my XF90 to get this lens

How about the new Samyang 100mm T2.3 ?
Came for the lens, stayed for the JLC.
Had a question for confirmation. At 9:33 in the video, that is a still you are panning across and not video, correct? Great video btw! Thanks!
Correct.
Hugh... since you're the only one in your forum, maybe you should change the name of it to "Three Blind Elephants and a Man". 🤣
Um canons macro is actually not really macro it reaches 1.4-1 because it has horrible focus breathing so when focused closes its more like 120-130mm
Don't worry that's not rust, just dirt and gunk. Use a toothpick followed by a lightly dampened q-tip and you'll be good to go.
