Lego is famous for their quality control, but I don't think they were expecting fans to disassemble and repair the motor 40 years after it was produced.

Yep, the construction of the motor is very solid, of course the only bad part is the potential for the commutator to melt if it's run under too much load...

No problem! Hopefully it will be able to help those who also need to repair their motors.

Are there still part available for these kind of motors ? My dad has 2 of them and he is looking for those brass contacs. 😅

Thanks for the comment! There are actually contacts available from a collector in Canada, I got a few sets and used them to repair two motors. They've worked great for me - here's the link: www.ebay.ca/itm/295333048762?

    Hi from Canada !
Thank you so much for the very instructive video. I came accros your channel a while back, and your videos are really nice to watch for us 12v trains fans 😊
I originally saw the forum post you are refering to, but it makes things a lot clearer with this detailled video. I actually have a red motor that came with my recently purshased 7730 that is defective. It kind of worked for about 10/15 minutes, then started to sound funny. I managed to open it with your instructions, and it looks like the wiring disc is unsoldered 😐I guess I'll have to solder it back to make the motor work properly. I hope this is something doable without to much trouble. In any case, your video will be very helpful !
EDIT: I notice that you have been able to remove the wheels from the axle. Any advice on how to do this ? Those things hold tight actually 😳
EDIT 2 : Just found your other video on how to remove wheels from the axle. Thanks ! 😉
Thanks for your work and for sharing your nice 12v trains collection with us !

Hello and thank you for the nice comment! I am so happy that my video helped you, this is exactly why I made this channel. Were you able to fix the motor? If you have any other questions let me know!

@@Reker1million Indeed I have been able to make that red motor work fine which is great ! Thanks again for this valuable video. Next step : try to have the sacrificed black motor working again.

Is it possible to change the wheels to the 57878 wheels? I want to be able to use 2871b on the Motors, and I don't think, that they would fit with the original wheels

Thanks for the comment! I've never tried to change the motor wheels to that type of wheel. Those brackets (2871b) definitely won't fit on the original wheels. I'm sure it's possible to get the newer wheels on the motor axles with heavy modifications to both. One thing is, I think the radius of 57878 wheels may be different than the 12v motor wheels, so having them run at the same height as the originals could mean the motor is higher up than it should be, and the brackets still might not fit.
One thing that may work is putting those brackets on a 9v motor and making custom power pickups with the old blue era contact blocks to pick up 12v power from the rails, and then using that to run the 9v motor (via a custom connector) with the side brackets. There are several videos about running a 12v motor on 9v tracks, and this would be like that but the other way around. One thing to be careful of is the voltage, the 12v transformers actually run at more like 15-16 volts max which will probably fry a 9v motor so make sure the throttle isn't all the way to the right. I don't know if that's what you're looking for, but it may help you create a solution.

Nice video ! Could you explain how to remove wheel from axle ? I have an axle with broken gear, but I can't remove wheels. It is in a red motor, but I have a black donor....

Hi! To remove the wheel from the axle, you first have to take off the snap-on clip from the groove in the axle. Then you can move the bearing to the center, which will enable you to pry off the circular spring clip that holds the wheel on. This can be done by pushing a rod through the hole on the outside of the wheel. It's a bit tough to get off, make sure to be careful. Once this is off it should be pretty easy to just pull the wheel off the axle. To secure a new wheel on, just put everything back on in reverse order. You might have to use some sort of tool to push the circular spring clip back into place- I did it with a pair of needle-nose pliers (use as a grip to push the clip into the wheel). Hope this helps! If you have any more questions let me know.

Great video. Where did you apply the grease? Just on the worm gears or did you do the wheel bearings and/or motor axle holders?

    • @Reker1million

Thanks for the question! I used a paper towel to rub a little bit on the 2 motor axle holders, coated the metal wheel axles so they would spin smoother in the bearings, and applied a fair amount to the worm gears. If you have any other questions let me know!
