In 2004 Rusty Wallace took a completely unmodified (other than being unrestricted) race ready NASCAR stock car to 230 miles per hour. He could've gone faster but they were testing at Talladega. I'd love to see a mid 2000's F1 do a 1 mile roll race with a mid 2000's stock car at Bonneville

In 1938 - that's before WW2, 86 years ago - Mercedes set a speed record with model W125 for the aurobahn: 432,7 kmh / 268,8 mph. That was the measured average during a 1km straight, when driven in both ways. Needless to even mention how dangerous it was with the tires and technology available, absolutely mad achievment. Reaching 400 kmh in the desert with modified F1 half a century later is not bad either - but I somehow thought it would look easier...

Indycars were breaking 250 mph (402 km/h) on the back straight at Indianapolis in the early 1990’s. The qualifying lap record was a 239 mph average (384 km/h) in 1996, at which point the series started to slow things down before too many more drivers got hurt.

Too much highspeed isn’t that good, it has to be adjusted to the braking speed and traction of the car…
For instance a Bugatti Chiron could overtake an F1 Car on a straight line, but it could never lower its speed fast enough to hit the chicane perfectly…
So if F1 Engines weren’t restricted, their brakes and wings would have needed to be adjusted to the former balance (speed-braking)

I could definitely see Red Bull attempting this. They flew a plane through a tunnel (a lot more to it than just the tight confines). Why not set up a temporary half pipe on either end of a tunnel for the car to be able to make it onto the wall and subsequently ceiling of the tunnel and back off again? Either an F1 or an LMP/SRP1 car (probably the safer option, and is capable of the same speeds).

Perhaps this is the closest we will get to that.

The thing about this car was, and what wtf1 get wrong as well - This car was completely legal for the 2005 rule set. It was not an car designed only for top speed. They took an v10 f1 car, and modified it whithin the rule's on which the car was built. No wheel covers. No extra aerodynamic shape. Still a huge amount of downforce. They could have raced this car in 2005. It would have been of the pace, but it would have been legal. And no other legal f1 car can hit those speeds
