+Professor Hershel Layton Professor, you're lying! You son Alfendi Layton works for the Scotland Yard as an investigator. If you don't believe me I have proof layton.wikia.com/wiki/Inspector_Alfendi_Layton
I still need to play the last game. I'm kinda scared to. Laytons plot twist always leave me so confused. unwound future left me utterly broken. it took me years to start the second trilogy. also I'm not sure I'm a fan of that dog. He seems to be that annoying Japanese trope of a character who only purpose is to point out, by shouting, how absurd everything is.
So who's the mother? If Layton is so smart, why doesn't he escape by himself? He's clearly tackled PLENTY of mysteries and gotten out of many scrapes before, so what happened here? Where the hell are Luke, Flora and Emmy? Wouldn't THEY want to help Layton? The dog can talk, _actually TALK_, without needing Luke to translate? Finally, why introduce a new character as the protagonist? What, were the designers sick of making Hershel the star of the _"Professor Layton"_ games?
I can't answer most of your questions, but I can at least answer the last part: Layton's arc is over. A majority of his issues and mysteries such as why he wears his top hat, his dedication to the gentleman lifestyle, and his origins have all been covered, with the Unwound Future finishing off with a Layton that has obviously changed for the better and is willing to move past some of his old issues that haunted him for most of the series. Doing more would just add to an already concluded arc that many are already satisfied with, possibly ruining it for some. If you want an example of what happens when you force more on a concluded arc, look at Ace Attorney. There are some complaints people have with Phoenix Wright becoming a bumbling, bluffing, inexperienced, idiot in 5th and 6th games despite growing to become extremely competent and independent in the first trilogy and proving himself to be capable of being a genius mastermind in the 4th game. The sudden transition felt wrong. Yeah, it wouldn't be as extreme with Layton, but watching an already developed character go through things rather than a character that is still growing is just boring, and any changes done to make it interesting would just likely make it jarring to play/watch.
Okay, okay, no more Hershel Layton games. The rest of my questions still stand, however - the identity of the mother, why Hershel cannot get himself out of trouble despite doing it many times before, the mystery behind Luke and Emmy's disappearance, and the absurdity of a talking dog.
***** Actually, I think I can offer theories for or at least sort-of answer the other questions. The mother situation will likely be resolved in-game (the most plausible theory I've seen so far is that Katrielle and Alfendi [if confirmed canon] are both adopted), so I guess just be patient for when the game does come out, and if not addressed in this, it probably will in this game's sequels. They really can't _not_ acknowledge this situation. Also Hershel's probably pretty old at this point. He was 37 in Unwound Future and Katrielle looks at least in her early 20s. At minimum, Layton would be 57 years old, but if Alfendi is canon and this game takes place around the same time as Mystery Room, it boosts Layton's age even further because Alfendi is 29 in that game, making Layton at least 66 years old. And remember, these are _minimum_ ages, he could've gotten his child(ren) a few years after Unwound Future. Layton may be a badass, but I don't think he could get of a complicated jam at that age. Luke is in America, simple as that (he probably will get an appearance though), and Emmy, well, that I can't say. We'll probably see her some time in the future, but it's understandable why they didn't show too much in this trailer. After all, if they show everything, what else is left to hype/theorize over before and after release? Pokemon XY made that mistake, and the release was a bit stale because of it. But yeah, I agree about you with the talking dog. He could be one of the Subjects from Unwound Future (a hypothetical Subject 4?), but either way, I just get the feeling he'll be incredibly absurd/annoying.
Luke's in America...? I only really played the DS/3DS games; supplemental material (as in books or mobile games) was mostly ignored. I of course did watch the canon movie, but that's literally it. Plus, well...I'm not that good at creating timelines for fictional worlds, so I didn't realise Layton's assumed age here. Who's Alfendi? The guy who serves Kat tea in the trailer (remembering from yesterday; replying via 'bell' icon)? Either way, this _does_ have me highly interested - I always want to know what's going on in a sequel, and while I may read a little about the characters and the _general_ plot, I mostly avoid major spoilers until I run into them in-game. Oh, and the Ace Attorney thing in the previous comment? I really want Capcom to translate AAI2 and that in-the-past game (the one with Sherlock Holmes and Naruhodo).
***** Well it's pretty easy to assume Luke's in America considering the ending to Unwound Future. Even if he isn't, the fact that he's not in England, and not in this trailer possibly for that reason, still stands. Also Alfendi is one of the protagonists in the moble game Layton Brothers: Mystery Room. The game as of now stands in this weird limbo between canon and non-canon. If you want to see his wiki page, here: layton.wikia.com/wiki/Inspector_Alfendi_Layton . Playthroughs of Mystery Room do exist online, so I guess you could watch the game if you don't want to play it. I kind of hope he is canon though, just to see Katrielle/Alfendi interactions, which could end up pretty amusing. Also see AAI2 and the game set in old London would be amazing, but the chances of getting the later are very slim. The language the game uses, while completely logical for the given time period, may cause a sh*tstorm on places like Tumblr for "racist remarks" and etc.
my bro saw the pic of luke and layton zooming out and was all "did they die" me: they better not have my fresh young blueberry luke is only 11? 12? one of the two. let him fucking live
Well Layton was around 37 years old in the Unwound Future, which in the timeline was the latest one. so that could make him in his late 40's, early 50's with this one. I reckon they may make him cameo a few times, which would be great. would be said if he isn't but you gotta take the good with the bad
let me get this straight: Professor Layton, have a detective girl a police detective guy with an alter ego personality and another guy whose name isn't mentioned. What
Thank you so much dowolf for the subs!! I knew you were a fan of the ace attorney series, didn't realize you liked the Layton games too! How do you feel about the lady Layton game?
I wonder if they're going to localize the name to something like "The Minoan Conspiracy" if the Ariadne in the title refers to the mythical daughter of King Minos?
Nope. According to Level-5 IA (the International branch of Level-5), the game's localised name is: "Lady Layton: The Millionaire Ariadone's Conspiracy". Don't ask me why the name's that, as I have no idea.
WHY CAN THE DOG TALK! I GET THAT IN THE UNWOUND FUTURE A RABBIT TALKED BUT IT WAS A TEST SUBJECT, THIS IS JUST A NORMAL LOOKING DOG! SO WHY THE HECK CAN THE DOG TALK! NINTENDO YOU MIXED UP ANIMAL CROSSING WITH PROFESSOR LAYTON!
By many games it's the problem that they don't know how to get further if the plot ends. Professor Layton is one of those games it is SO DAMN EASY by to continue the plot, but they didn't do that somehow... Anyhow, still pretty hyped for this new game! ;)
I'm quite sure that she's not his real daughter... Maybe she's kind of adopted. Think of Luke - he's the self-styled assistent of the Prof, so here we go with the self-styled daughter. Something like that.
She's so adorable. I already love her.
Mystical It would've been AMAZING if it was Flora
It appears I've been replaced. Hm. I need time to process this.
I'm wondering what happend to Alfendi Layton
PolarFusion I don't know. I don't ever recall having a son by the name of Alfendi. Or Layton, for that matter.
+Professor Hershel Layton Professor, you're lying! You son Alfendi Layton works for the Scotland Yard as an investigator. If you don't believe me I have proof layton.wikia.com/wiki/Inspector_Alfendi_Layton
Howard Szabo Oh dear.
I believe you may have a cameo in this good professor
Thanks for translating it, man. :33
Thanks for subtitles!!

The prequel trilogy is ok. Azran legacy is trash

BADASS!!!! THIS WILL BE THE GAME THAT WILL GET ME INTERESTED IN LAYTON AGAIN!! AND PUT IT UP THERE!!!!!! YAY!!
I hope Level 5 sometime soon would release Professor Layton 1-4 on the eShop and mobile devices like what Capcom did with Pheonix Wright.
my bro saw the pic of luke and layton zooming out and was all "did they die"

Any Idea when this comes out?

Is it better to get it on your phone or get it on your 3ds?

cry!! cry!! Cry!!! T.T
so who did professor Layton have a baby with?
Glad the series is continuing. I hope it's not bland like Layton 4, 5 or 6 though.
BS. Layton 4, 5, and 6 were AMAZING games.
except layton 6 that was a letdown
