- Cradle is such an amazing series and Dreadgod is no exception. I love this series and had to do an incoherent dump of my current thoughts on the series after finishing Dreadgod.

I am glad I found someone as hyped about this series as me! I just read all of them over the last 2 months and it has quickly become one of my all-time favorite series. I realize its not as technical or "deep" as many other series, but it was just so much fun to read!

Loved Dreadgod but it mostly felt like a bunch of setup for book 12. The only disappointment for me was that I hoped Jai Long would have a redemption arc where he chose to die for Lindon's sister in battle or some such. I figured he'd get killed at some point but I found his end unsatisfying based on the relationship build up. For positives I really enjoy seeing time spent on Lindon's team as they "walk their own paths" and we get to see them progress as well. I hope that Eithan/Ozriel gets a much bigger part in book 12. I miss his humor. The bloopers section helped me with that a bit, especially his speech marble in anticipation of Lindon silencing him.
This book was so awesome. It’s such a great thing to see Cradle get rep on UA-cam as well. Glad to have you on board.
Cradle is definitely way undervalued in booktube rn imo. Glad to spread the hype!
As a fellow cradle enthusiast on youtube I loved this video!
Hey Michael, I love your enthusiasm in your videos and your passion for Cradle. I totally share it! I wormed myself through this series in about 2 months and loved all about it.
My theory is that Lindon is putting together his 7, who will probably replace the judges. I think Little Blue will be the new Phoenix, Mercy the Spider, Yerin the hitman (forgot the name of that judge), etc. I cant wait to see if I’ll be right!
Will's Elder Empire is also fantastic. It's more traditional fantasy (not cultivation), but it still has his humor and tight writing. It takes place on the iteration "Asylum" that is mentioned a couple times in Cradle: it's a prison world where some Class 1 Fiends are locked up. There's horror elements but at it's core it is an adventure trilogy told from opposing factions.
The magic system is different than Cradle's, it is called Reading: anyone who uses an object invests their intent in it (so an old brass sword will be stronger and sharper than a new steel blade) and a Reader can look at the intent, invest it more easily, and even awaken the object to grant powers to someone soulbound to it. Will does some really interesting things with it. Can't recommend the series enough.
Cradle is the classic shounen-anime formula done really really well. An amazing magic system, which results in a very satisfying growth in power. It is easy to give your MC a bunch of powers, it is much harder to make it still feel like they earned them fair and square (sure Lindon got insanely lucky a bunch of times, but all his abilities make sense are are not random ass-pulls he shows for the first time mid fight).
There needs to be a series dedicated completely to Eithan/Ozrial and his journey before and after ascending.
Should have read comments first, just realized this was already said. Which is awesome, glad I'm not the only one.
I'd read it in a heartbeat.
Will Lindon be able to ascend? We know for a fact that Monarchs can ascend, and even Heralds and Sages sometimes, but we have no precedent that Dreadgods can. I am doubtful that Lindon can advance to Monarch bc he is a Dreadgod now. Will Lindon be stuck in iteration 110 because he can't ascend? What if Yerin, Mercy, Ziel, Orthos, everybody Lindon knows ascends and he cannot? What if he has already made that sacrifice by taking Subject 1's power? I feel like that would be more tragic than him dying.
I think we will get to see Ozriel at full power. I think it's going to come down to his 'real' scythe being somehow accessible to him/on his person already, which will allow him to free himself from his suppression bonds. He attacked the Vroshir world to provoke Daruman and Makiel into looking at Fate with the weakened Ozriel, where he or Suriel die (him twice as likely).
Then when he needs to, maybe after getting Daruman to say something, he'll bust out his scissors (or whatever ends up being his true scythe), break his chains, kill/force Daruman to leave, and then Makiel gets tried not only for his previous mistakes, but also for intentionally jeopardizing Suriel and Ozriel to protect himself.
Maybe then, Lindon and the rest who make it, become Reapers and are able to push back the Chaos to a much more effective extent than Ozriel could ever do alone.
Since your last Cradle video, 2 weeks ago, I've finshed 12 more books on my tbr.
Frick yes
Let's be honest...we need a series on Ozmanthis..up until he becomes ozriel or Ethan
Facts
I thought machael sped up linden fate , because of azriul (veiled) . So linden wouldn’t die because they were forcing him to ascend . I believe that was in black flame.
You need to read the travelers gate series by Will Wight. I have some other stories I think you'll really love by different authors. Arcane ascension by andrew rowe is another favorite of mine. There are actually easter eggs from wills books in Andrew's books. I even think will gave andrew a hat tip when he mentions the iteration obelisk in cradle. Another favorite of mine is the Mage Errant series by John beirce. All of them are progression fantasy and you can find the authors in the progression fantasy subreddit quite frequently. I hope you give them a try because I love them. Happy reading :)
Love all those series. Arcane ascension fits progression fantasy with well-defined levels of power. The other series by Andrew Rowe has a more nebulous progression but higher power.
Mage Errant is a more standard fantasy with characters that learn how to use their power rather than acquire more (with few exceptions).
Agree with your opinion on Jai Long. Great video! Would love to hear your opinion on Waybound if you decide to record one :)
I love cradle! Little late to be watching this but here I am lol
I do recommend reading the other series. I've only read the traveler's gate series, not fully so I'm not sure, but it seems not super connected. I'm 90% sure it's the world amalgam that was mentioned I think in dread God tho
I have binged the 11 books n love them. Can’t wait for way bound although I have to admit I’m nervous of hyping it to much in my head as there is a massive amount to tie up.
Another trilogy with plenty of progression is mother of learning… soooo good n would love to hear your thoughts on it.
Definitely think there has to be another series in the same universe as we know sooooo little about both the silver lord/ vashir factions and abadon.
Not every monarch can become a judge so there must be another power system once you leave your iteration
I have Mother of Learning on my TBR! I hope to get to more progression fantasy sooner than later!
Yeah.... There seems to be so much more to be explained in this series that it has to branch out to more than just 1 more book right?
The Vroshir
I could see Zeal manifesting the time icon or something similar. I’m hoping we get more of him in Waybound
Oooh that's an interesting theory! Agreed on wanting more Zeal sections!
Read the Elder Empire series next start with Shadow then sea and repeat until you finish all 6 books I think you will like how it ends.
I just gotta do it. I want to
Will Wight is awesome. Read The House of Blades. He is a very good author.
I want to catch up on the rest of his bibliography sooner than later!
oh you have to read his other books they are really good just as good as cradle.
Check out Codex of Alera series by Jim Butcher. They're so much better than the Dresden Files in my opinion, and he wrote them on a bet.
Get to the point quicker next time
Honestly I might be way off here but I freaking LOVE the dichotomy between Lindon and The Mad King. They both hate the way things are run and he's willing to do whatever it takes to change it. I can't wait to see Lindon and the gang fight The Mad King.
OOooh great parallel! I hadn't caught that one, but you are right!
@@QuestLegacy it's something that occurred to me while watching your video. I just can't seem to sit still thinking about how Lindons story will "End"
Love Dreadgod. His Elder Empire series is also excellent and one of the most creative approaches to writing a series I've seen. (It's a trilogy with six books. Three books each from opposing character perspectives)
No way Lindon dies! He has those moments of “I/we will never stop” and how Cradle is not enough for him. Just binged the whole series and the “muscle memory” I’ve built about the series reassures me that Lindon is safe and hopefully Yerin too although I could see Mercy dying since the light “love triangle” thing would be resolved that way
Excellent review! Our sentiment towards Cradle is very similar. Really enjoyed your takes.
Jai long was always a "problematic" character. Tbh Will should have got rid of him earlier. I think there's also the fact that we have only 1 book left and not enough time to actually give him time for a proper redemption. I knew when Lindon brought up his past (after he gave a defense mechanism ONLY to his sister), he was probably gonna die.
You should read Will’s other series! His first series, Traveler’s Blade, is an iteration that is mentioned in Cradle, called Amalgam. And his second series takes place in the iteration called Asylum. So all of his works so far are within the same multiverse
I really liked Traveler's Blade and I can see how its world fits with the description of how iterations work and are created but I'm not sure how the magic system fits.
In Elder Empire I liked the assassin side, (the series is two trilogies of books whose stories occur at the same time and intersect at multiple points). The captain's story is not bad but for me it was more to give a context to the other story. The magic system is different but I can see how it could be another manifestation of magic in Cradle.
Cradle has made me seriously interested in Will's other series. I'm excited to dive into them more!
I have some ideas of where the story can go based on the story themes and character arcs.
The conflict between Abidan and Vroshir is order versus chaos and not good versus evil. In addition, it has been shown that both paths have flaws and end the end of the book there are possible villains among the judges.
It doesn't make sense for Lindon to join any of these groups and his arc has a lot of duality themes especially restoration and purification versus destruction (Suriel vs Ozriel). I can imagine Lindon aligning Black Flame with chaos and Pure Madra with order.
Also the other theme of the story is to accept or maybe assimilate your enemies I'm not sure how to define it, but I have the examples. Lindon starts the story with a mission to defeat the dreadgods and at the end of the book he is part dreadgod. Yarin begins by opposing his parasite and then accepts and joins Rubi. Also for a long time she considered Redmoon Hall as her opponent but later became her leader.
This partly supports the idea of them taking allies from both the Abidan and Vroshir.
My other idea although less convinced is that they mentioned that Yarin could be more powerful if she had a madra balance that included hunger. With this I imagine that by facing the bleeding phoenix she could consume its power and have a transformation similar to Lindon's.
Monarchs are more uncertain and are on a scale between enemies and spoiled children. I imagine that some will have to be eliminated, others will asend by force and perhaps some as allies.
Preach
P.s. this series is heavily influenced by Dragon Ball by Akira Toriyama. If you're looking for a similar type of story with advancement watch DRAGON BALL if you haven't yet.
I haven't, but I've been known to dabble in DBZ
Not to flex and not done w video yet but I figured out Ozriel as soon as he had the piece of the origin shroud. 😬
When was this
this guy wrote 11 books in the time patrick rothfuss wrote a chapter for doors of stone
Facts
My prediction is Malice is going to kill Mercy. But doing so will turn her whole family against her. Since everyone knows Mercy was truly kind.
If that happens I'm gonna rage, but you could definitely be right. If that happens then straight up screw her.
I’m not sure about mercy, but I could absolutely see that happening with charity. She has been very introspective in Dreadgod while also being depicted as being vulnerable
It would be nice if the time desync in the other iteration gave Lindon and Yerin a chance to catch up and help after ascending. It was implied that there desync was the other way around though
Where's your waybound review....... 😢
But I love this though! Great job. 🎉
I have a hunch that Lindon could become Suriel and Yerin as Razael (since she's called the sword and Yerin's mention of wolves). I could totally be wrong but that's my hunch. A Thousand Li by Tao Wong is probably up your alley too since it's a Cultivation/Xianxia like Cradle and Travis Baldree also does the audiobooks for it.
Lindon does not favour healing, so I do not think he can become suriel
House of blades is incredible, i need more of that itteration.
Fisher Geisha will ascend and be the spider Abidan. I said it!!
I can see mercy becoming the next Phenix because she is so caring to all that she will want to being back those that have been killed.
I side with this theory.
I read every book in the past week or 2 and I can’t wait for the last book. Also excited to see how London and Cree ascend and fulfill eithans dream
I NEED BOOK 12 NOW!
Everything with little blue was amazing
Indeed
Great growth and series: Demoncycle series!!! First book is Warded Man. You will not be disappointed! I can't exclaim enough!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Didn't suriel tell Lindon in 'Unsouled' that his fate had him dying in every outcome though each thread varied temporally? Wouldn't that point to his sacrificing himself and possibly reversing time back to the beginning and Lindon erasing his own memory to live a regular life in sacred valley or with Yerin?
In every one that he killed the Dreadgods, he dies. He chose it anyway because he's the best boy and just wants the people he loves to live
