I think the opposite about leaks, I feel they ruin the impact of official reveals. I heard the leak for banjo so when I saw his reveal I felt almost bummed because I thought it was gonna be another villain reveal from the start of the video. On the other hand I wasn’t spoiled for Ridley so when I saw his reveal I was blown away being a Metroid fan. I guess it’s a matter of preference on how you like to be informed

I wouldn't say that the copyright information was "accidental". Legally they kinda have to include it, and the announcement trailer pretty much played with the fact that people knew it was an SNK character, but not which one. They got the NeoGeo logo out of the way first before teasing us with pretty much every major SNK character that could've possibly picked up the invitation letter.
Fun Fact about my experience for the Terry reveal: I was clamoring for him joining for a month or so for Super Smash Flash 2 because I didn’t think he’d ever make it to smash and then that clamoring was bought to life in smash!

If there were people who mentioned Terry but he was below Mai Shiranui and Athena, in the end Terry is in Smash because he is the first SNK character.

Activision charges a lot for licensing. No way would Nintendo pay trillions for one character and charge us $60 to make up for the lofty licensing fees.

Two other fighters were leaked by dataminers before this. Just before the E3 2015 direct, dataminers for the newest Smash 4 update found classic mode victory videos for Roy and Ryu. They were then revealed in the direct, set to be released via update hours later. Because of this incident, all smash fighters are now revealed a week or more before their release so that the update has time to be on the eShop after reveal but before release, since it takes time to finalize the update. Datamining is a common issue with games that release content like this, mostly mobile gacha games. Some may say it’s in bad faith and immoral, but to be completely honest, we should expect curious minds to look for all they can. I personally support the company structuring their releases in a way to prevent datamining from being effective if they actually care about leaks (reasonable for a game like Smash, less so for most mobile games imo) rather than just playing the “we don’t like it when you do 😤” card and hoping it just stops. It won’t.
Simon and Richter I understand being included due to the Castlevania series’s legacy on Nintendo, but no-name Terry has to be the biggest wasted slots in Smash history. We could’ve gotten Crash Bandicoot, Rayman, Dante, Paper Mario, or whatever. But instead it’s a character from a C-tier series that no one’s ever heard of and who looks like a Chinese knockoff than an original character.
