The IMUs and SMUs are undergoing refurbishments expected to be completed over the next few years. Also that refurbished train you showed at 5:33 was actually an unrefurbished later built version of the IMU, the 160 series whereas you were on a 100 series. There is also a 120 series in between.
@@ryansofly the upgrades will help make them compatible with the new signal system too. The Older EMU trains won't be upgraded though, with the last of them to be phased out later this year. They were meant to be gone years ago, but problems with the NGRS kept some of them in service a little longer. (One decommissioned set also had to be returned to service, embarrassingly)
Well Gympie North is the Northern most end of the suburban network of Brisbane, only about 2-3 services a day head north that far Monday - Friday and Sunday. Given that it is a suburban service in Australia, the railway company wouldn't even consider a cafe bar so it's best to carry your own lunch and snacks. It is also the least used line in Brisbane as you go past Nambour. The government has considered shortening the overall route to Nambour Gympie North as a shuttle service but was turned away.
As I’ve commented on your instagram about those trains servicing GC, seeing those seats feels nostalgic. Love the seaside and underwater creatures designs on them. Probably because it’s an urban or intercity train, they think it isn’t necessary to put vending machines in them. I agree with your opinion for an over 2 hour train ride though. I’ve stopped over at that lake in Gympie a few times while driving back from Childers to Gold Coast. As always, good video mate
Haha yes, my friend insisted on taking me to Lake Alford before the train station. She wanted to feed the ducks. Someone made a comment that the vending machines would most likely be vandalized , I did not think about that. Suppose less items in the cabin means less problems to manage. Yes that seaside pattern is so Y2K, and I was very excited to find out this train is the only one to feature this interior.
Great video Ryan.. Enjoyed the Spirit Of Queensland trip from Brisbane to Cairns with single seat by the window converting to a bed, food which was included was very nice too.. Well recommended.. Enjoy your train travels too as well as the flights Ryan.. Have a great Christmas, would love to say hi when you’re in Melbourne some time.. Safe travels mate…
Mate! Thanks for popping by, as always. Yeah I actually enjoy trains more than flying, really. Pity our trains in OZ are in such a sorry state. And yes, I do want to do the Spirit of Queensland the entire way at some point.
I used to aim to catch the ICE train pre 2021 going to Brisbane that was always a great experience shame they don't use those anymore from Gympie to Brisbane
Great video 🥂 I really do enjoy train/bus travel as opposed to driving, living in Edenhope it's a 4.5 hour drive into Melbourne, sure the bus/train takes a little longer, but so more relaxing.
It is a pity Aussie bus travel is very torturous. We don't have any of that luxury coaches seen in other parts of the world. But yes, I agree train travel is extremely relaxing especially when the ride is smooth.
I've never personally been on any of the QR "city" trains as I always travel from the Sunshine Coast to Brisbane by car but I have travelled a few times on the Tilt Train from Landsborough to Rockhampton and it is a fantastic service. It only takes 30 to 45 min longer in the train than it takes to drive up the Bruce highway by car. I have been in both business class and economy and I really do recommend Business class but you have to book that well ahead as it fills up fast.
Yes it's such a pity those long distance trains weren't operating that day. I was really grasping at straws thinking of what I could say for this train! Hahaha.... Thanks for watching though!
All of the IMU 100 fleet are getting refurbished so soon IMU 105 will not have the green seats unfortunately, but it really is a needed refurbishment to keep the IMU 100 trains in service for the next 15-20 years or so.
It was much better when the old ICE trains did the route. Passenger services to Gympie are parliamentary so if could, they wouldn’t send regular trains there at all.
I remember those seat cover designs from the early 2000s. Lmfaoooo at blueberry pancakes. 😂 Have to agree that the service probably needs some bins and food service, but QR probably can’t justify it because as usual, most people drive. I have to admit as a Brisbaneite I’ve never caught a train to Gympie before. Your videos and Rory Ding’s that I’ve been binge watching in recent months, has really made me want to explore more of Qld by rail. I just wish we could get some transport to next door NT without forking $1000 to fly return to our neighbour as our only option. Thanks for another comprehensive review. 👍🏽
Domestic airfares to NT and WA are crazy expensive. Just travel within Australia in general is expensive. I remember planning to go to Kangaroo Island in SA. it ended up cheaper to go to NZ with hotels thrown in. 🤷
@@ryansofly it’s scandalous. One day we’ll start our own domestic airline. No blueberry pancakes will make it to the menu, but there will be bbq chicken, cheese and date and lime chutney toasties, and plenty of boozy ice cream.

There was an ICE train? Where are they deployed now?
ICE train?
@@rachkate76 Inter City Express trains. They are a more modern version of these clunky trains you see. In Europe, ICE trains can travel up to 300kmh.

Oh is it now? Hahaha... I need to return to MCY in the day time.
Darn, notification didn't work.
Ha no worries! You can still watch it again here!
Eating and drinking is not allowed on QR citytrain, why they don't have facilities like this on these services
Absolutely... Suppose the youth crime problem in Queensland does not help.
Is there a qld rail shuttle to Gympie north station or you have to get a taxi from Gympie?
Can't tell you, I got a ride to Gympie North from a friend.
@ryansofly The reason I asked is because Qld has the 50 cent fares for 6 months, so I'm gonna take the train from brisy to Gympie for 50 cents!!
@@dezzaofoz well aren't you lucky! 🤣
