The Betty Crocker Picture cookbook is what I learned to cook with (made the Baked Alaska when I was eight!) My mother's copy was lost after she passed, but I found a copy in a used book store last year, complete with handwritten notes and extra recipes pinned to the pages by the original owner ! What a treasure!
I was born in 1951...my mom kept me in the kitchen from the age of 4 (to keep me out of my dad's toolbox so I didn't take stuff apart)...this is the book where I learned to read/follow a recipe...I bought a facsimile copy a few years ago and bookmarked some of the recipes i used to make for my dad & I when i was in high school...thank you so much, Anna, for featuring this oldie-but-goodie....J PS: The Corn Sausage casserole is still one of my favs!
my mom got this book for her wedding in 1950. It is the cookbook of my childhood. I remember one Christmas...when I was 7 or 8...would have been Christmas of 1958 and she made EVERY SINGLE COOKIE recipe in the book and gave away cookies to everyone. I loved learning to cook from this book and when I was 12 or 13 my mom got the flu and I cooked Thanksgiving for 26 using this book! I ordered one from Amazon tonight. Thanks for the memories.
Wow. Great memories. You will love becoming acquainted with Betty again. P.S. I bet you were popular in the neighborhood after that wonderful Christmas of cookie sharing by your Mom.
My mom had a Betty Crocker cookbook book that looked like that. There was a cake section and my sister made every single cake and was able to finish before our mom passed.😊
Mom used to make a baked cheese sandwich much like the one you made. She would make it plain with the top lightly sprinkled with a tiny bit of cayenne pepper for flavor or sometimes she'd also throw in leftover, sliced deli ham or turkey from lunch-making for the week, sliced onion, diced mushroom, whatever needed using up. It was such a cozy fill-up during the dark, winter months.
Hi Anna! I absolutely loved this series last year so I’m happy you brought it back. We are definitely feeling the aftermath of the holidays monetary-wise. I always look to you to inspire me to pull myself up by my bootstraps and try a new recipe! Thank you so much, love from South Florida 😊❤
My mom bought me the facsimile of this book, she has an edition from the 60’s that was her home ec text book. The recipes you made today all sound really cozy. Your personality was really sparking today! Your channel always makes me happy.
Love the baked cheese sandwich, so easy to make even for just one person like me. You could use any kind of cheese that you have on hand and I would probably put a slice of ham in it. I have that cookbook too, it was my moms.
This Betty and the later version with a big photo spread on the cover are so treasured by me!! I grew up reading Betty like a bible, loving every little gossipy "aside" that they put at the top of the recipe and appreciating all the stylistically out-dated but so darling caricature-style illustrations. Have cooked so many recipes from these books and have the tattered old, worn copy from Mom and other, less ravaged versions. Cooking The Books, I am sure you will agree, you can never have too many Bettys!
Hello from Hilliard, Ohio (down by Columbus). My mom made Johnny Marzetti, but she used elbow macaroni. Once in the casserole dish, she sprinkled shredded mozzarella cheese. Then baked it.
I remember that egg cheese bread recipe from my Betty Crocker kids cookbook eons ago… I do think there was some crumbled bacon on top. I never made it but it sounds really good. When you showed the recipe for that in the book, on the opposite page was a little drawing of a smiling saucepan with little legs stuck out in front…I just love those charming drawings in those old cookbooks. So darn cute! 😊
I just had supper or dinner or the evening meal with my sisters. Navy Bean Soup with the leftover ham bone from New Year's dinner. Super nice to have a cozy supper with family on a cold January afternoon!! Love the latest video.❤
I love this series, Anna, so thanks for bringing it again. I want to make the cheese sandwich casserole. It would be wonderful in the summer too with a big side of sliced garden tomatoes, yum! (That flowery apron is just lovely!)
I love simple comfort food, with some more complex dishes scattered in. I was thinking the cheese sandwich egg mix would be a perfect breakfast to make for my grandkids.
I love the cookbook and grew up with it (my mom got it as a wedding gift-she got married in the 1950s). I look forward to trying the recipes in this video. Thank you for sharing the recipes!
I’m eating Betty’s Chicken a la King from your full day of 1950’s meals as I watch tonight. It turned out great! I found a facsimile copy at Half Price Books.
🎉❤😊 I pull out my trusty 43 year old Better Homes and Garden cookbook to this day. Wedding gift from Mom. Love your videos. Grew up in northern OH. You seem like home folks to me!
I have to make that Holiday Spaghetti because I'm so charmed that the recipe says "From a famous movie star whose wife often serves it at their informal supper parties."
The casserole dish you made the sausage casserole in,I have that too with a lid. It's so good for small leftovers, haven't an oven so use a slow cooker, stove top and electric skillet for cooking. Was concerned about it breaking in skillet. I think I bought this for my mom,she passed in 1997 at 86 yrs.And yes that lady could cook!I still can smell her beef stew in my mind!🤭❤
I have that book. I discovered my husband's favorite cake in there. I think it's called a Duchess Spice cake. It's so good! :D There is a lot of really great ones in there.
I will be making that cheese sandwich casserole tomorrow to go with the vegetable burger soup you made some time ago. That soup is a staple in our house and we usually have a grilled cheese sandwich with it. ❤
hi anna my sister when she was younger used to make milk toast for her kids ....basically make a thick white sauce with loads of pepper optional if you want to add real butter .. toast a 1/2 or full loaf of stale left over scrap bread , rip them up in pieces drop in sauce stir well to combine... then serves in a bowl...very filling and dirt cheap...and you wont be hungry any time soon!!!!! try it;];];] season to taste.
That was the first cookbook I bought. It was in the 60s and I was 16. We were vacationing at Cranberry Lake in NY. I also have my Mother-in-law’s version.
I’m from central eastern Indiana (now Iowa). I miss meijer. I never had spaghetti growing up because my 90 yr old dad has such a big garden, we ate a lot of fruit/vegetables. But I have a friend who talked about Johnny Marzetti. I’ve never had it though. Who was Johnny Marzetti btw?!
Wikipedia has a great article on the origins of Johnny Marzetti: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Johnny_Marzetti It goes by many other names too depending on where you're from. 😊
i have Betty Crocker’s Picture Cookbook that has been passed down through my family through the generations - we all wrote our names in it - it is a wonderful book. Even today.
I first had it when I was in kindergarten, they made it at our school with leftovers, spaghetti, macaroni ,noodles. It’s better if it’s a day old or two days old!❤
All the recipes would probably be good for parents trying to feed kids who are picky eaters! If I made the corn and sausage dish, I might put a dollop of sour cream on it
My mom had that cookbook and another one very similar. One of them had a peach pie, made with canned peaches, that I made all the time for my dad. Wish I could find that recipe again!
All of these look great. The budget is going to vary drastically in some places (my friend in San Fran/San Jose area said a dozen eggs are $9 as of yesterday!) Love Johnny Marzetti! Peg Bracken put her recipe for it in her 'I Hate to Cook' Almanac. Great for a crowd or to freeze in portions. And yes, over half of her recipes are narrative form and you have to really pay attention (I use a highlighter) to not miss ingredients.
I thought you had a gas stove for some reason. Looks like you got a new stove. Love your apron. The sausage corn dish I think is just meatloaf ish if you did raw sausage.
Anna, do you have a Watkins cookbook? I like your budget recipes in January. But, I enjoy all your videos.😊 By the way, what was your favorite Christmas gift you received?
Once it hits the table, it's not legal to serve anybody else. Not saying that never happens, but most places won't run the health department risk for the minimal savings involved. Might as well take it home and use it up. Or feed it to the birds in the yard. No shame, girl. I taught Londoners how to combine carry-out with dine-in in the 80s, and you'd have thought I goosed the Princess Royal the way they took to that concept. I just explained that to my mind, their food was too good to throw away, despite the part where their enticing menu had made me lose track with my capacity. Mostly after that they were quiet, but my BIL, a native, was horrified. That's even before this one chef went all in and gifted us with a taro. Which we had never seen, or cooked, and did not understand. He didn't either, but he saw them at the market that morning and decided to play. Then he shared with us. Because he believed my story (I wasn't lying), and also he was adoring my mom. Memories. And croutons.
How can folks watch these videos and not give her a thumbs up???

I’ve had mine for 43 years, and it’s still my go to for many things. Was my grandmother’s and she gave it to me when I got married.
You are a breath of fresh air, I love your channel. Thank you so much.
I’m so glad you enjoy the channel! 😊

❤❤
That is really sweet. And very ambitious! Thank you for sharing that.
That grilled cheese sandwich casserole would be amazing with a couple slices of tomato baked in.
I might put some sun dried tomatoes in the cheese sandwiches! I could also see doing a Ruben sandwich OR Swiss cheese with ham. Oh yeah!
I think that would be delicious with ham, Swiss, and sautéed mushrooms and onion. Serve with a salad, or broccoli.
@katefarr2036 Mom mostly did salad on the side. Mmmmm.
Have my mother's copy that she got as a wedding gift 1953. I learned to cook using it❤
❤❤
That's awesome 😁
I have my mom’s that she got in HS around the same time 😊❤
I have my grandma’s hardcover 1950 1st edition with a machine sewn clear plastic book cover. Well loved and so much fun to page through.
Budget friendly AND vintage cooking! Im in heaven!❤
I enjoyed binge-watching you over the holidays! Fun to see a new video!
The sandwich recipe is super simple and maybe whisking in some Dijon or granny mustard for modern update would be good too. Great video Anna ❤

It was so delicious!
You cannot get a good meal in a fast food place for these prices. Love budget recipes. Thank you!!❤
So glad you enjoyed the recipes. ❤
MEIJER for the win! It's the perfect blend of Walmart and Target! :D
This Betty and the later version with a big photo spread on the cover are so treasured by me!! Hilliard too my version I call it skillet Italiano
Super series. Great video Anna! ❤ Want to try all of three of these recipes.

Love the latest video.❤
We inherited my grandma’s copy from the 50s.
Aaahhh! I just found a first edition of this cookbook at a local antique store! So excited for this video! ❤
That's fantastic! Enjoy the recipes! 😊
I love this series, Anna, so thanks for bringing it again. I want to make the cheese sandwich casserole. It would be wonderful in the summer too with a big side of sliced garden tomatoes, yum! (That flowery apron is just lovely!)
Oh yes that sounds like the perfect combo!
I enjoy your videos 😊 I have that cookbook. Going to make those recipes. From Ohio
I have that book! It is so much fun to look at!
I love simple comfort food, with some more complex dishes scattered in. I was thinking the cheese sandwich egg mix would be a perfect breakfast to make for my grandkids.
Have rhat book, love the keminade& brownue receiptes yummy!😊
We home can tomatoes that we raise for ourselves and others.
I love the cookbook and grew up with it (my mom got it as a wedding gift-she got married in the 1950s). I look forward to trying the recipes in this video. Thank you for sharing the recipes!
❤❤
That gold butterfly Corelle plate took me back! That's the set I grew up with, from middle to high school. :)
The cheese sandwich casserole sounds like a good snow day recipe for bread and milk! 😊
I’m eating Betty’s Chicken a la King from your full day of 1950’s meals as I watch tonight. It turned out great! I found a facsimile copy at Half Price Books.

I'm going to a thrift store soon. I always look at the cookbooks when I go. I can't wait to see what I find.
These are hearty meals for the weather as well . Please add 90s to this compilation. 🤭 it be fun for the nostalgia!
I have to make that Holiday Spaghetti because I'm so charmed that the recipe says "From a famous movie star whose wife often serves it at their informal supper parties."
Those little gossipy "asides" at the top of the recipe were so great! Made every recipe seem glamorous.
Sending the boys the cheesy baked sandwich recipe. ❤
The casserole dish you made the sausage casserole in,I have that too with a lid. It's so good for small leftovers, haven't an oven so use a slow cooker, stove top and electric skillet for cooking. Was concerned about it breaking in skillet. What a nice post regarding your mom's delicious cooking.
I have that book. I discovered my husband's favorite cake in there. I think it's called a Duchess Spice cake. It's so good! :D There is a lot of really great ones in there.
My husband also loves spice cake so I'll have to check it out!
I will be making that cheese sandwich casserole tomorrow to go with the vegetable burger soup you made some time ago. That soup is a staple in our house and we usually have a grilled cheese sandwich with it. ❤
Homemade bread and an extra slice of cheese and those cheese sandwiches would be awesome, but I’d eat it as made too.
Saving on food is definitely on my ‘25 to do list. Thanks for these recipes!
So glad you found them helpful!
Love this book. It was my mom's, and I have tried a lot of recipes from this book. My family loves most of the recipes.
That's so nice. I love hearing family stories about cookbooks. 😊

That was the first cookbook I bought. It was in the 60s and I was 16. We were vacationing at Cranberry Lake in NY. I also have my Mother-in-law’s version.
The Ohio girl is still in me. When Anna lost that green pepper piece, I reacted with an "oops" followed a split second later with Anna's "oops". 😂
I love budget meals. Thanks for sharing these recipes 😀.

I really like that cookbook and use it often-I like the format. I make the oatmeal muffins often! You made those in a previous video. Happy New year!
Oh yes I love those oatmeal muffins! Nice to hear you enjoy them too.
I first had it when I was in kindergarten, they made it at our school with leftovers, spaghetti, macaroni ,noodles. It’s better if it’s a day old or two days old!❤
I like the knife you were using. Pretty!
These recipes are so helpful right now! I need some new recipes for dinner.
Ah, Betty❤ the classic imo
100%.
I live in PA it's been messed but absolutely beautiful as well. ❤
Happy New Year Anna! Fun video today and great idea to show the cost. You really can make some good stuff cheap! 😊
Happy New Year to you as well!
I bought the facsimile book a few years ago. You've motivated me to use it!
I’m so glad! This book has some real gems in it.
All the recipes would probably be good for parents trying to feed kids who are picky eaters! If I made the corn and sausage dish, I might put a dollop of sour cream on it
That would be a delicious addition!
Please make the tuna and peas one. Love you and your channel ❤
I still use my Betty Crocker Picture Cookbook. It is beat to hell and falling apart 😅.
It's funny how "crusty" was a delicious & inviting description of a roll in the 50s😂
I bet those crusty currant rolls are terrific 😋
I have Betty Crocker 1950 book my birth mother gave it to me
❤❤
My mom had that cookbook and another one very similar. One of them had a peach pie, made with canned peaches, that I made all the time for my dad. Wish I could find that recipe again!
That apron is so cute!!! I love it!
I love low cost meals especially if it tastes good
I really appreciate your research and the fun of seeing these vintage recipes. The REAL question, though, is where did you get that fabulous apron??
It's from Hedley & Bennett and the print is called Strawberry Fields. 😊
We love your budget series!
“A ketchup film” 😂😂😂 I don’t know why but I found that hilarious!
Happy New Year!
Happy New Year so glad to catch you today! Love your videos!
I love this cookbook
Super 🎉 Thanks Anna
The sandwich one would be nice with some leftover Christmas ham too.
Brunch dish 👍

The "I Hate To Cook" Cookbook had humor and nascent feminism combined!
Love your videos!
Thanks for watching! 😊
The cheese sandwich bake looks like it would be good with tomato soup!
I have this book!!
Another great video!!
Enjoyed the video. Thanks Anna
You're welcome! 😊
Anna, you pasta breaker you! 🤣
Guilty as charged! 😂 I love that you noticed!
@@cooking_the_booksoh we noticed alright. I am appalled on behalf of the Italians in the group. 😠😉😂❤️
Loving this
I thought you had a gas stove for some reason. Looks like you got a new stove. Love your apron. The sausage corn dish I think is just meatloaf ish if you did raw sausage.
Anna, do you have a Watkins cookbook?
I like your budget recipes in January.
But, I enjoy all your videos.😊
By the way, what was your favorite Christmas gift you received?
I would leave the ketchup off the corn sausage casserole
There's nothing wrong with taking a doggy bag home from a restaurant. You paid for it, so why leave it to be thrown out.
I had bariatric surgery a number of years ago. One restaurant meal is at least 4 meals for me. No way I’m leaving all that behind! 🤣
Once it hits the table, it's not legal to serve anybody else. Not saying that never happens, but most places won't run the health department risk for the minimal savings involved.

Memories. And croutons.
Thanks to you, I have a twist whisk and an off-set spatula= life changing 😀
They really are game changers! 😊
Where did you find it? I’ve been looking for one.
That toast bake needs minced leftover ham.
Put some cooked bacon and tomato inside those cheese sandwiches 🤤
Where did you find that fabulous apron???
The baked cheese sandwhich looks good, but why go to the trouble? Just make grilled cheese!
This baked cheese sandwich was definitely a different experience than grilled cheese. 😊
I wonder how the spaghetti would taste wit chorizo?
I have a crazy question. Did you get a new stove? Didn't you have a gas stove? Why would you change? Lol I miss my gas stove.
👍🏻
And I shop at Meijer or Sam’s club. The Walmart here in Ohio is nasty
cheese sandwich casserole sounds like a tiktok trend nobody discovered yet
