I got a new vein in my forehead listening to Vito talk about the N64. Ocarina of time was good because of the story, the music, and the atmosphere not because of the walking and the GRAMFIX.
I mean, TBF, the story is pretty bare bones: Ganondorf is taking over Hyrule, collect 3 stones, play magic flute, age up, awaken six sages, seal Ganondorf away.
Video game stories in general are usually bare bones, but what made Ocarina of Time special was the cinematic and dramatic tone in which it was told that was unique to the series for the time.
I think it's better to praise OoT nowadays for it's fun dungeon design, combat system that games since copied and improved upon, and it's general atmosphere and the subtext in it's writing, monsters, and environment.
Eric talking about his videogame reminds me of when Ali G tried to pitch his hoverboard to an angel investor.
Vito's right that the N64 aged horribly and has like 5 good games but his list is wrong and Ocarina is in the list of good ones. I think it's more fun by modern standards than Mario 64 anyway.
The cartridges did hold less space which is why a lot of third party developers moved to the PlayStation that generation, cause they wanted do to shitty FMV cutscenes and whatnot. But the PS1 also output at half the resolution of the N64, so everything was a pixelated mess. And using discs instead of cartridges meant you had horrible loads times whereas the N64's solid state cartridges loaded super fast.
Big disagree about the N64 aging horribly and not having many good games. N64 is GOATed. I think some don't appreciate the N64 properly bc you're judging it more on single-player (where graphics, memory limitations, and a better controller are a lot more important) when the N64 (like all Nintendo stuff) is/was geared more towards multiplayer/party experiences. N64 ages great bc the games entirely prioritize fun gameplay over graphics. At house parties people still boot up the N64 even when they have new consoles, no one boots up a PS1.
& N64 had sooo many good games:
Smash, Golden Eye, Donkey Kong, Kirby, Paper Mario, Super Mario, Zelda, Mario Tennis, Diddy Kong Racing, Mario Party, Pokemon Stadium, Star Fox...even many of the less known or liked ones like Bomberman, Clay Fighter, Mario Golf, and Space Invaders were great. PS1 also had a lot of bangers but I don't think they aged as well.

In his own 2D game engine - which I believe he coded 'from scratch' using nothing but a bare graphics API - Uli has successfully simulated the curvature of the earth as you enter the stratosphere. Not even full fledged AAA games like No Man's Sky or Destiny (lol) come even close to accomplishing shit like this. Enrico Juneteenth couldn't even spell 'stratosphere'.

Even if you could make a more action based Devil May Cry-ish MMORPG on a technical level, it still wouldn't be desirable on a nuts and bolts action level. DMC style action games are designed as single player experiences, you're the lone badass who is strong enough to take on all the enemies and bosses. Playing as a character who feels *that* strong is antithetical to the kind of cooperative gameplay in an MMO. Support needs to matter, zoning needs to matter, coordination and status effects, etc. Each of the player classes needs to have a viable role, if one of the characters is as competently action-y as the protagonist of an action game the entire design falls apart.

I recently replayed Mario 64 and ocarina of time. Overall, I thought Mario 64 held up, I actually completed every star for the first time and met yoshi, but ocarina was a chore and I don’t think I made it through the whole game before forgetting about it

Dude! Links Awakening IS the best Zelda game, I hope you got a chance to play the remake, its pretty good though nothing beats the nostalgia of going on switch online and playing the original! Also HAPPY BIRTHDAY VITO!!! These are some wild takes on N64 that probably hurt a lot of butts, but you are not wrong on any of those points.

The DX version on GBC was my first Zelda game, definitely a masterpiece. It's a shame that people need games to be re-made these days (and yes, I realize that the DX one was basically a "remake"). The only reasonable update for that game would be more buttons / item slots. The "kids these days" have such crap taste in all popular entertainment, gives me very totalitarian thoughts - like, a 'driving license' for indulging in them at all.

Lol I'm the opposite. I grew up with manga and couldn't get over how bad/ugly I found the American comics. I still can't read them. The style is just too ugly for me.
It took me a while to get used the manhwa because it's colored, but the style is much more pleasing so I got used to it pretty quickly.
n64 did have more fun couch multiplayer than any other system. i have every emmulator/rom for every system and n64 is still the most requested. we almost always run mario kart, road rash, wave race and daytona. i also love starfox but no1 else does. that and ocarina are better on the 3ds anyways. n64 controller was a major pain to adapt to an xbox controller tho, its designed worse than eric's brain. whats up with his mouth does he have 2 tongues? pause at 2:07:00 and explain the reptile tongue plz

Vito’s N64 take was Antarctica temp IQ. Ocarina of Time and Majora’s Mask are both easily top 5 Zelda games. He said Mario Kart was one of the few good games on N64 as if Diddy Kong Racing isn’t a vastly superior kart racer. There’s a reason N64 games have so much nostalgia surrounding them, and it’s because the N64 had top tier first and second party games. PlayStation 1 can get fucked. Fr. N64 is goated. I had basically all the consoles, games, and my own PC growing up so it's not just nostalgia or bias. PS1 had some serious bangers and I did also enjoy a lot of SEGA genesis, but no other console had games with such replayability. My friends and I STILL play N64 on a regular basis (with the same console too, those things last forever). Sometimes my little cousins will come over and they'd rather play that than on their ipad or my XBSX.
