- Normally, I start my update with It’s Friday. Time for another weekly update.
Today, I don’t want to speak as Knox County Mayor, but as a fellow Knox Countian, a neighbor. When I ran for mayor, part of my platform was full and absolute transparency so I’m going to lay it all out for you when it comes to COVID-19.
I think there is a fallacy going around that we’re all going to hunker down for 15 days and this thing will pass. The truth is, it could be many months and we should be prepared for that.
The other truth is that the unintended consequence of flattening the curve, which is intended to delay the spread of this virus so that the health care system does not become completely overwhelmed. Note I said delay, not stop. It’s here and we can’t stop it. The unintended consequence is that we are creating another massive curve, a tidal wave, that will overwhelm social services.
Worldwide, we are seeing mass layoffs. Manufacturing giants are pausing production. Keep in mind, those plants can’t just be turned back on. The economy does not just pause. Small businesses, the backbone of our economy, are going out of business. People, not just abstractions, but people, our families, friends and neighbors are going to be wounded financially, emotionally, and spiritually.
But as I have said all along, whatever will happen will happen. We cannot always control that, but what we can control is how we respond.
Earlier this week, I called a friend who I hadn’t talked to in a while. I started by complaining and belly aching about everything. When I finally let him talk, he told me what was going on in his life. He has a couple businesses. He figures this will bankrupt him and his businesses, but he trying to take care of his employees as best he can.
This week, he had to lay off 200 hundred people, but here’s what really struck me. He is in the process of refinancing his building, but instead keeping the proceeds for himself, he plans on using the money to pay for his worker’s health insurance until it runs out.
Talk about humbling, and as I continue to tour businesses in our area, that’s a common theme.
Owners aren’t worried about themselves, they are worried about their people. That is the attitude we all need to havel. This, too, shall pass. It may not seem like it, but it will. What we do throughout this crisis, and how we react as a community is going to determine how our world will look on the other side. What are we going to leave our kids and grandkids? The world, and life will go on no matter what.
If you ask me, I’m going to tell you what we are going to do. We are going to act like Tennesseeans and Knox Countian. Like Volunteers. We are going to emerge from the fire, the crucible, not singed, but tempered and even stronger. Because that is who we are, and nothing, not some stupid germ or anything else is ever going to change that.
As for me, I will continue to do my very best to make Knox County the best place to live, work, and raise a family.

Hey Glen, please check out the Australian model, there are shut downs but its more non essential cafes, restaurants but keeping the 6 feet away rule. Most of industry is still working buy many are working from home. Government is providing soft loans to business to start new projects but there is a $750 per week subsidy to employers to keep workers on during this period. I think its working and we have reduced greatly the curve. Its a conservative government being very socialist for a period but returning to capitalist kick starting. I run 2 businesses in high tech and employ 10 people.....I am a "greedy socialist" and a bit of a libertarian if you get my point. Best wishes
