  • Taken from an informal lecture by Roy Eugene Davis at a Center for Spiritual Awareness Kriya Yoga Retreat in 2010.
    What is God?
    What is my true nature?
    Why am I in this world?
    What should be my ultimate purpose?
    What can I do to allow my ultimate purpose to be most easily and quickly actualized?
    Am I doing all that I know to do to experience the fulfillment of my ultimate purpose?

    “What ever you’re doing, keep doing it.” Reminds me of the story of the three hermits who lived on an island and were visited by a priest who came to teach them.

    Maybe I can answer this, if it is still relevant. I know this state. You probably think a lot and are identified with these thoughts too much. Reality is always Here and Now, so a simple, but efficient way to come back to it is to stay with your breath during meditation.

    Rou Eugene Davis claims to be the guru successor of Yogananda. Yet Yogananda said that he was the last of the linage of the SRF gurus. Also Davis claimed direct contact was needed with the guru in order to be a disciple - again, Yogananda said it did not matter whether he was in the body or not - it is a matter of attunement with him. It appears that Davis has misinterpreted Yogananda's message or he has not fully explained the apparent discrepancies.

      Timetryp Thank you for your comment. Mr. Davis never has claimed to be the guru successor of Paramahansa Yogananda. He was ordained by Yoganandaji and authorized to teach and initiate in the kriya yoga tradition. As an SRF monk he was personally instructed, encouraged and blessed by Yoganandaji. Paramahansa Yoganandya was very open and shared his understanding and meditation techniques freely with those whom he saw were open and receptive. He authorized several individuals that were never SRF members to initiate. HIs chosen successor was Saint Lynn.
      SRF is an organization instituted to publish Yogananda's works, administer its operations and teaching outreach. There are several lines of kriya yoga gurus (guru means teacher) tracing back to Babaji. In this tradition it is useful to establish a personal relationship between a teacher and student so issues like these can be explained and understood. One can benefit from attunement with a teacher who lives at a distance, or has passed from this world, this is not the same as receiving personal instruction and clarification on ones spiritual path. Authorization to transmit spiritual energy and serve as a point of contact with ones higher self must come from a realized individual, not from an institution.

      Mr Davis was told by Yogananda to "Teach as I have taught, heal as I have healed and initiate sincere students into Kriya Yoga". That is what he has done for over 50 years. That initiation was given personally to Mr Davis and has nothing to do with SRF or their directors. Yogananda also gave this initiation to several other students who continued to teach Kriya Yoga and take on their own students outside of SRF, such as Oliver Black at the Song of the Morning Ranch. Kriya Yoga has been handed down from teacher to student in this way for centuries. SRF does a very good job of publicizing Yogananda's teachings and introducing people to Autobiography of a Yogi. Mr Davis does a very good job of leading people in mediation practice, explaining the finer points of yogic philosophy and transmitting the teachings of the lineage. There is no need for exclusivity or competition. We are all on the same side working toward the same goal.
      I believe it was James Lynn who declared that Yogananda would be the last guru out of his love and respect, it was a gesture of humility to show that he had no intentions of trying to replace Yogananda in any way. I do not think it was meant literally that there would be no more gurus as this would effectively end the lineage of teachers.
      You are correct that it is a matter of attunement to the teacher whether they are in the body or not, but it is usual in this tradition to develop an attunement with a living teacher who can answer your questions directly and offer guidance when needed. Trying to attune to a teacher who is passed already leaves a lot of room for speculation and misinterpretation and is not advised if one seeks legitimate spiritual growth.
      Yogananada also said that many people will claim to speak with him from beyond the grave after he has passed and that none of them will be telling the truth because he will not be operating in that way. If this is so then it would be impossible for anyone to attune to him after his transition in 1952 and so it is essential for the lineage of teachers to continue just as Yogananda instructed of his students, such as Mr Davis and Mr. Black.

      +Center for Spiritual Awareness Davis did claim to be the guru-successor in one of his books. Attunement without a incarnate Master can be difficult, but not impossible. Davis is a teacher, not a guru. If he can dematerialize his body, I will reconsider my statement.

    I don't doubt the fact that this gentleman - Mr Davis - believes (some of) what he says, but my bullshit-ometer was in the red on this one.

      Why? I had the opposite reaction.

    • @Nai61a
      @Nai61a 7 років тому

      +bernecomp Mainly because he makes a lot of assertions and offers nothing in the way of evidence. I don't have time to list them here, but I kept asking myself: What does that mean? What method do you have to demonstrate that what you are asserting is anything other than the fanciful invention of your creative imagination?

    • @bernecomp
      @bernecomp 7 років тому +3

      I think Mr. Davis is just pointing the way. Realizations are by nature personal and difficult to relate to others. I have been meditating since 1976 and while initially skeptical about many of the claims of benefits beyond stress reduction and mental equilibrium, to my surprise I have found unbidden internal validation over the years of many of the assertions made in the Vedic literature regarding the nature and possibilities of human consciousness. We are all on a personal journey of inner discovery. Good luck on yours.

      +bernecomp Fair enough. My take on it is that we are vulnerable to our considerable power of auto-persuasion. You know, the "seek and ye shall find" mentality; tell yourself that something is the case and you may eventually come to believe it. But, each to his own, as they say ... I do concede that this can have positive, beneficial effects.
