I always love the what the wife said segment. I truly don't understand why these are not regulated to a tighter tolerance. You are right in that it should be expected at that price range. Seiko frustrates me sometimes.
Best reviews on UA-cam.
MWC is the Sid & Marty Krofft of watch reviewers.
Imagination Genius.
Matthew you are very kind thank you my friend!
It is a lovely watch no two ways about it! However for £4,100 I could not justify that. I would much rather have a new Tudor or a used Omega for that money. Thanks for the review.
It’s a fair comment RAA RAA!
It’s a reasonable sentiment but I wouldn’t even put an Omega Seamaster or Tudor Black Bay in the same class as this Seiko. Having owned a $5k Ocean Planet and now wearing a $6k Seiko LX Spring Drive regularly, the craftsmanship and value is miles apart in favor of the LX, inside and out.
@@nickchang5293 I just can't get around the Tudor being a "poor man's Rolex". I know that's not fair, and Tudors have started to be their own thing, but, objectively speaking, a Seiko Marinemaster is a superior watch in every way to the Tudor Black Bay, better movement (even if these assholes don't regulate it from the factory for some weird reason), polishing superior to a Rolex, ceramic insert (though Tudor may have started adding that to the BB by now), better specs and tighter tolerances in the parts. Never understood why some people think the Tudor is somehow more "elitist"; just not the case.
@@nickchang5293 My Omega, on the other hand, while not better in terms of material, does boast more attention to detail. Of course it cost over twice as much so it had better.
@@nickchang5293 That said, one of the reasons for this SLA055's high price is the "ever-brilliant" steel that Seiko developed as a super corrosion-resistant steel to compete against Rolex's L908. Their first watch to use this was the limited edition SBEX009 which was over $6k because of it, and, as far as I know, is the only other watch that was made from it so far.
That is an absolute stunner, I love everything about it. I even like the strap! That price though… while understandable not a chance. I could fully rebuild my 1957 MGA for that.
Beautiful watch, but......I'll stick with my King Turtle Dark Manta. Love your presentations MWC!!
Thank you my friend! That’s a great watch!!
Just pulled the trigger on a grand Seiko diver , 9f quartz ,it solves most of the issues especially second hand, I paid 1200 pounds in Japan ,which is a quarter of the price of that thing .better finishing and runs at 5 seconds per year accuracy .......job done
So I had to pause the video near the start and google the price ****spat out drink**** wow!! Gotta say it is a beaut though! This video was just pure class Russ, a helluva lot of hours gone into that! Loved it mate!!
Greggieboy I appreciate that a lot thank you my friend!! I know you watch a fair few channels so it means more to me!;)
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR Welcome pal!
The strap is from the original ‘Willard’,as worn in the film by Martin Sheen.
Been after one for ages for my Steeldive.
That’s a nice watch, but waaaaaaaaay out of my price league.
All the best.
Out of nearly everyone’s my friend!!!;)
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR I’ll wait for a accurate Steeldive version…🤣😉
I was looking at this from Jura watches a few days ago and asked myself if it’s really worth the hype. 8L35 engine is considered pretty high end albeit an unrefined cousin to the 9 series. Accuracy in a 4K watch should be COSC standard in my book. Hey, but we get Grand Seiko effort thrown in, like Sapphire and zaratsu polishing on that ever so precious version of steel. Then you get a measly 200m rating on divability? For a little over quarter of the cost (and a generous discount) I got a Doxa with SW200 engine, sapphire, 1,200m divability and the all important history behind it. In short, the limited edition angle just ain’t gonna cut it with this one and it’s certainly not a deep pockets sensible move.
Could comments here my friend! I love it, I want it but it just isn’t a 4k watch imo
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR I think the price point realistically is around £1,500 to £1,750.
@@rayharrison6400 you’re mad, it’s basically a grand seiko in a seiko, and you talk of history like seiko had none 🤦♂️🤣😂 I got this for £2200 so can’t go wrong. Both great watches, wear yours in good health 👍
You forgot that sw200 is just derp movement,I would slap someone who would buy 2k watch with sellita 200 infact miyota 9 series is better than 4r,6,r series, better than powermatic 80 and definitely better than SW 200.
If Panerai can basically put a powermatic movement in their 20k watch than this sla with ,8l movement seems like a Rolls Royce compare to Panerai.
Great review. After actually seeing the steel against the dial and light blue bezel numbering, I have to say it’s a fabulous looking bit of kit. Even with a regulated engine, the price is still way off the mark. But, to the even more hardcore Seiko collectors out there, it’s a nice to have depreciatory add to their collections. 8/10 from me.
Fair enough my friend!!!! Thanks for the support as usual!!
I checked it out yesterday, and was shocked to see the bezel insert a third of a minute to the right, and the chapter ring a quarter minute to the left. That's embarrassing for a luxury watch. Nice polishing though. Even in this video the insert is misaligned and it's not even subtle
the wife is absolutely right. the bezel looks like a 200$ microbrand, and with all the high polishing all over, it looks overtly blingy, as if it's not sure if it wants to be a proper tool watch or a dress desk diver
then there's the movement, which was great 20 years ago, but by modern standards in this price bracket it's absolutely pathetic. it's like some lunatic brands out there wanting 1-2k monies for base (not even elabore) Etas/Sellitas.
then there's that eye-piercing "misalignment" of the date position and the crown... if you're putting them in the same area, please align them. but i guess with Seiko the misalignment has become a feature, not a bug
then those "stripes" on the markers... they look as if they came off of CNC line and they forgot to do the final finishing. cheap as hell
if you don't mind the thickness and weight (and you should! i couldn't live with it for more than a few months), the MM300 series is much much better. and the original 6159 absolutely annihilates them all in every single way
i saw it from afar at the local Seiko boutique just today (hence my watching this vid on this very day) and went inside thinking i'd be selling my BB58 to get one of these... as soon as i saw it from up close, saw the specs and asking price and just said "no thanks" and walked away. shortest time i've ever been at a watch dealer
I loved it matey and if I had the money I wouldn’t have given it back to F&G;)
That watch is slicker than snot on a doorknob. I like it! Slick stunna!
When Russell kept referring to price, I was thinking… well hey it’s a damn nice watch. How bad could it be? And then he said the price and suddenly my good old SKX and mini turtle seemed to meet my needs just fine.
Hahahahaha fair enough my friend!
Can't wait to watch this! Seeing the early access comments, I can glean some context of how you feel about it. I bought the SLA057 (the gilt version) a month ago and I have to say, it's incredible. The finishing compared to the Tudor BB58 I had is on another level entirely! Even compared side by side to my buddy's Omega SMP300, it's impressive! For me, it was more than worth selling my BB58 for. Having said that, I think you have to be a fan of Seiko's diver design and the history behind them. For me, the 62MAS and MM300 designs are my favorite dive watch designs full stop. Grand Seikos dive watches have never appealed to me, but Seiko? My favorite! This is the best of both worlds for me. It gives me the legendary design, but Grand Seiko finishing and movement! I happen to be a nato guy, so the fact it doesn't come with a bracelet doesn't bother me. From a finishing standpoint, I think the price is warranted and is on the level of other watches in the same price range (or even more so). I understand why not everyone would want to drop that kind of money on a Seiko, but given my love of Seiko dive watch design, the SLA057 is the holy grail for me!
it would get you about 2 BB58s though. For 4k i'd go pre-owned grand seiko. you get the polishing etc and a better movement.
It’s a good shout but what a watch!!!!
It’s a beautiful watch my friend! Just the movement that lets it down for me . F it was chronometer certified I think you can get a more justified argument with the price ? Still want one though!!!
Oh even the mm300 puts everything below the omega smp300 to shame finishing wise. That's the difference between say high end Seiko and omega and Tudor. Tudor makes tool and reissue watches. Omega and say anything above the mm300 from Seiko are purely luxury watches.
@@masonsnakes4721 Man, I gotta tell ya, even though I loved my BB58, the SLA is on another level in terms of case design/finishing (it’s finished by Grand Seiko). Funny enough, I was able to purchase a “Like New” but pre-owned SLA for exactly what I sold my BB58 for. Couldn’t be happier!
lets take the Submariner by Rolex that i own. new, should be no more than 1500 bucks. unless its custom with jewelry, no watch it worth more than 1500 bucks. just because we pay more don't mean their worth it.
Holy sheeeet 4100 quid! Its a lovely watch but id rather have 4 seikos at a lesser price and use the left over money to take the misses out or on holiday. Great review tho! Well done Russell
Great shout Ian!!!
Just to add, this watch won a Red Dot design award as well. I have it and there is something subtle about it, I can't stop staring but I can't pinpoint at what specifically.
great review, nice looking, but for that price tag i got my aqua terra, which is COSC and METAS certified with a average rate of +0.5- 1 second a day, decorated exhibition caseback and a silicon hairspring and a co-axial escapement. Aqua terra isn't everyone's cup of tea, but the bang for buck at this price is far better i’d wager.
i just think they're out of their minds frankly, at that price to not regulate at the least.
It’s a fair point my friend! Appreciate the support!
I think Rolex needs to take few lessons from this watch. First would be: it's available to buy it!
Yea your right its a great watch but that's not a great price, I didn't pay that for my Blackbay Panda and if I had another 4+ grand spare it'll be another Tudor, sorry but for me Seiko prospex up to a Monkey all day long but no more
It’s a good point Russell !
My Marinemaster 300 has the same movement. Gained 5 seconds over 7 days :)
Spot on Russell! Great review, lovely watch, not worth the money unless you have bucket loads. Agree completely ! 👌👍😊
Cheers Dale!
Wow! There’s so much to love with this one! An incredible looking watch that could sit alongside any of the iconic Swiss divers in a collection and not look out of place Unfortunately for us mere mortals it’s got the price tag to match too 😂
Totally agree that the movement not being regulated is a bit disappointing though. I know accuracy isn’t the be all and end all with mechanical watches but surely at this kind of price a regulated movement should come as standard, right? Especially when it’s an in house Seiko engine. They aren’t bunging an off the shelf Sellita in these. They’re doing all of the incredible hand assembly and the industry leading hand finishing and then leaving the movement as it is 🤷♂️
You need to get a Grand Seiko diver in for review now MWC. See how it compares to this one.
Thanks Gareth! Yes!!! It’s almost as though they forgot to put the icing in the cake with the movement!!!!??? If you want high accuracy your gonna need to go GS!!!! Yes need a GS diver now!
Agreed. They use premium parts and material, assembled by master craftsman, charge an arm, a leg and half a scrotum for it, then, weirdly, don't go that last half mile? WTF??
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR I mean, the movement has clearly proven to be capable of it.
Another Great review from TMWC. I like the robust looking bezel.
Thank you my friend!
I would buy this stunna when casebackagogo gets off the peanut butter
Great show man !
Hahahahaha me to!!!!
Hi Russell, I own a seiko sla043, the 62mas , with the blue seconds hand. At 40mm it's a great size for most people. The movement should be regulated, but it's still essentially a grand seiko movement. The sla 043, is a gorgeous watch, and just as well made as any omega in this 4k price point. I got mine used but mint so nearly half price. At half price it's easily worth the money imho.
I would let you review it , if I could get it off my wrist , lol
Well said Martin!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR have you ever reviewed or seen the sla043 in person ?
I own a few GS and other SLA watches. The quality of this watch screams GS.
The fit and Finnish is comparable the my GS.
The 055/057 along with the gorgeous 043 are unique because of the ever brilliant steel. GS has a stunning dress/sport watch with this steel on a bracelet. Over $9500. The 043 has a brushed case, not polished. I wear it to work on a farm. Durable!
The only real negative is that Seiko doesn't regulate the movement.
My 055 is +2,. The 043 -7 , the 049 +5. Peter Kotsa regulated his 043. It runs at 0.
Is it worth the cost? Yes. If Seiko would only regulate the 8l.
World bezelling federation hahahahha needs to be its own show ;-)
Very pleasant to look at but would defiantly save some £££ and go for a Tudor Pelagos or BB.
Fair enough my friend!
Beautiful watch please do a review on the grand ones too please
Great review! Very nice watch, but it's not a perlative ceronometer, is it?
Hahahahaha no!!;)
I just realized how much I like your channel! It's not so much the watches, (I do love them) but it is your presentation! I love how you do the different characters. Particularly the references to the past.
That’s the sun my friend! Even if you don’t like the watch I’m reviewing you still come along for the ride!!;) very kind thank you!
Omega money for a Seiko? Even if It is very attractive...nah. I'll snag a Breitling for that kind of dosh. Pity...I'd seriously consider it if it hovered around a grand.
Yeah you're in Omega, Breitling, Tudor, and Rolex (used) territory.
Honestly that is insane money for a seiko. I’ll keep my Oris Aquis thank you.
Do it my friend!!
Always look forward to the wife's unfiltered opinion. Great video. It's a stunner!!!
Yes
Good job, and quite entertaining, you would be a hell of a watch salesmen, or comedian or both!,
Nice ......but the position of that date window is weird, awkward, and damn right WRONG!!!!
Agreed!!
seiko LX models are the best and most expensive seiko divers …ive held both on my hands and the LX with spring drive felt a step above… LX is basically GS
Just had the strangest in sporty handset of all time!!!!!!??;(
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR i am blessed that i live in Tokyo and able to hold these awesome pieces… they are a tad over my budget tho
42 mm case is a downer, specially for small wrist people.
Why do all watch makers go for the big size.... Its not elegant.
It’s a weird one! The lugs are actually long for Seiko tbh! But i still want it!!!
Are the SNR references pricier than this one? They are Spring Drive.
SNR041 or SNR029 please!
Think your right! The GMT is!
Most modded SKX’s look better than that plus the four o’clock date window screams Ratner’s.
Not sure about that my friend!
Great watch, but why-oh-why not line the crown up with the 4 index, as on the original? It drives me bonkers.
Agree me my friend!!
Seiko has lost their minds with pricing.
Gorgeous watch, love Sekio.
Great vid as always and a fantastic review. 👏 brilliant mate brilliant and very funny 😁 😂
Lovely. But for that price.. nah
You may be doing nice reviews, but The way you Talk is Really Unpleasant.
This is lovely Saar thank you!
It's a bit of a chunky munky but it fits you well. Seiko magic. They do need to deliver the trimmings though, especially on models 800$ and up.
These are such beautiful watches. Anything from Seiko with the 6R or 8R movement is generally going to be pretty good. Personally for me I'd rather save money and get either the Willard or an Alpinist. I bought myself a Seiko Alpinist SPB155 and so far enjoying it for the most part. Love the fact Seiko makes dive watches for people with small wrists.
The 6r is junk. The random luck you get with one isn’t worth their asking price new. 2nd hand it’s barely ok. The sla055/57 second hand price is what their msrp should be. I’m on the fence right now about picking one up 2nd hand for 3k~
@@jeremiahpayne2084 The SPB155 mentioned above can be had for $575 or even less from an AD. Say what you will about the 6R, but it's fair at that price in a brand new watch. The problem is that Seiko generally wants to charge 2x or more for it. I'm surprised they haven't discontinued the SPB155 altogether as it seems to contradict the direction they want to head. Which I think, for the record, is an unfortunate one!
Great watch for sure, it is fairly "blingy".
I was peeping at your notebook during "what the wife said", are you considering a Spanish channel? lol
Hahaha! God knows my friend! I scribble the wife’s comments in any little space I can find!!!
Hello how's it going my old spoon Benda Should be colled the Seiko wonga cos it's a shit load ...of wonga 🧘
Big Will!!!! Thank you my friend! Yes absolutely!
date at 430 is downright disrespectful, especially at that price point
It’s a little off
£4, 100...........................................EEHH.................in the words of Deborah Meaden.........,I,m out,.
I’m out too but only because I’m poor;(
stunning looking case ..dial ..an absolute strap monster ..but at that price why oh why didn't they fettle the movements accuracy...that let's a fantastic watch down sadly
It makes no sense Mark!!!;) thanks for watching!
How much? For a homage with that movement? you have to be kidding!😱😂
Hahahaha
Great review as always Russell, I had already seen this watch and I also think it's over priced but that being said it's still a fantastic looking watch with a top movement but for the price I would be looking at a Tudor or the new longines Diver with the new 5hz movement in it, keep them review coming buddy 👍
I'd be happy to sell a liver for that. You can live with 1 right??
Hahahahaha yeah I’m sure it would be fine David!!!
there is always something wrong with these high end Sekio's and in humble view just not worth it
No such thing as a perfect watch my friend!
Love your channel, and your wife is just great! women!!😂😂
If you can get this watch around $3500 it's so worth it. The BB58 is $3950 and it has an aluminum bezel and an inferior case and finishing
Not sure what happened to my first Super thanks so here is another, hopefully the first one turns up
You shouldn’t have done that!!! Thank you!!!
The Best watch is most Expensive? What a obviousness..
I wouldn’t say that was the case with Seiko most of the time!
Not worth the $$$$, thats grand Seiko money for sure..
Sure is!
So tired of people with comments that are only showing their ignorance of Seiko's history and background in watchmaking......
I really dislike negativity my friend. No place for it . Let’s move on
Is the chapter ring slightly off. I know angles can make it appear so but some of your straight on photos look slightly to the right. 7:25 for close up example
This one certainly has some amazing specs and outstanding finishing, but at over £4K for a Seiko in such a competitive 'premium' category doesn't hold up IMO, especially considering the lack of COSC level certification and accuracy. A timepiece for Seiko fan boys/girls - get a Tudor BB58 otherwise.
I agree the msrp for this is absurd but 2nd hand is not so bad. The bb58 has no curves or love put into the case design. Just a big boring slab of polished steel.
4100 pounds and the buckle isn't signed.
Hahahaha I KNOW!!
Great show Russ. Too much £££ for that watch as nice as it is. I’ll be sticking with my Willard(s) and I reckon you will be too?
Hmmm, its a NO from me .lol How Much! Totally agree about the COSC certification but if you have Ducktales money then why not . Brilliant show as ever and Mr Pagani did not dissapoint lol
Love the reviews, keeping the price to the end on the pricey ones 👍👍. I’m guilty of turning off if they’re out of my league 😔. Seikostu says keep going, stay safe. 🍺.
Thank you my friend! Will do!!
Another Expensive Seiko price for a CHEAP product. Garbage bezel clicks, and all $200 watches these days have ceramic bezel and Crystal sapphire. And ONLY 200M 🤣
Accuracy out. 😒
The 8L35 is a VERY good movement, the one on my Marinemaster runs better than the COSC in my BB58: btw 0 (ZERO) and +1s/day ! Imagine if regulated 😂
All the 62 MAS re-incarnations have the same problem. Crap movement specs for the price. Hand assembled by GS & not regulated? wtf??
Seiko, make it with a proper movement and charge more. What difference £4k or £5k? What you're offering here isn't a complete watch...more like a wannabe.
Hmmm. Not sure that's a £4000 watch at all. No COSC. Basic depth. Kinda leaves me a bit meh... For a little over £1000 one could get a DOXA with all the history and pedigree and all the specs.
Whaaaay overpriced
Garbage accuracy: unregulated movement
Garbage bezel clicks
Garbage strap
Lucky they didn't make too many 🤣
Nice watch. But for that money? No signed crown. No exhibition case back. No curved strap lugs. I can get an Omega TUDOR or Panerai for that money mate..
The same price i bought a brand new Omega SMP300 12 months ago..... grand Seiko maybe but you can buy so much more than a Seiko for this money.... i'd expect in-house and COSC for this money as a minimum.
4K for gold plated details damn… Seiko give a f* their service and warranty…. Love their designs but hate their movements. Maybe their quartz solar stuff is better. I’m talking about Seiko not grand Seiko or Seiko 5
Stunner! Hard to come to terms with the price though. Also noted that £4100 still doesn’t get you a signed crown from Seiko - the stubborn buggers aren’t giving in on that one 🤣
love your wife's reviews!!
To the point!;)
For price of it you can have mm300 plus beautifull spb240j1 in my opinion better combo, but If you have them then why not?
It's definitely a beautiful watch, but for that price, I would expect COSC certification. The watch seems to be overpriced, as-is.
Can’t get past the price tbh, I mean really!?
I’m with you my friend! That’s why I wanted you to enjoy the show first!;)
How could it be the evolution on the 6159 as it is not a monobloc case.
I would prefer to get the "Marine Master" latest edition which apparently is still a monobloc case. Or even better like you mentioned the Tudor Black Bay.
Great show as usual, but I think I'll stick with my blue faced Omega Seamaster professional 300 M, with its matching rubber strap. It costs less than this and it's fully certified. A true competitor to the Submariner.
If I had the money and money was no object I’d personally take this over a Seamaster but the METAS chronometer is another level!
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR check out the Tudor BB ceramic. It's essentially an omega seamster with a ceramic blacked out case, classic Tudor looks and a 70 hour power reserve for less than the smp300 at retail.
Yours is a £5200 watch, not less?
It's a lovely piece for sure but if I put a chocolate bar strap on the spb187 you would have to get pretty close to tell the difference.
I think the whole non regulated thing is a red herring. There's several videos of these on timegraphers which show them operating within COSC, and that goes for all SLAs with an 8L movement.
I don't consider this the best Seiko diver. I believe that honour belongs to the SLGA001. So awesome.
Looks like an icebreaker...think about it..
Hahaha
'Best' is subjective at this level. The 8L35 movement is good but not the best Seiko can offer. I'd argue the SNR029 Spring Drive is the best non-GS, non LE Seiko diver. The SLA025 LE with the hi-beat 36000 movement would cost quite a bit more if you could find one.
Lovely stuff my friend! Life is subjective and it’s all about opinions ;)
Hay man, cool channel
Tell Kurt, Taco Bell only has Pepsi, just so his hot-date isn't disappointed
Was it just the camera angle or was that bezel slightly misaligned :)
Camera angle Greg! Pinpoint is this one
@@THEMADWATCHCOLLECTOR Phew, for that money it would have been unforgivable even for Seiko :)
Come on. Give us a review of the SPB317 PLEASE
Just found your channel and loving your presentation style mate. Love the look of the SLA055 but have just gone for the SPB325 for a similar look at a quarter of the price. Keep the great content coming!
Thank you my friend!
The watch is awesome but the price OMG
AGREED!;)
It's almost like Prospex has become the new "almost GS but not quite" for nearly the same amount of money......like you ill stick to my more cheaper Seiko's........please review the new Tudor BB Pro as ive just purchased one and would like to know what you think of it #MWC 🤪🤪🤪🤪
Gary your right!!!;) I’ll get a BBPRO in soon;)
For a bit more you can get an Omega Seamaster 300m diver brand new with a discount at the AD. Far better watch, and both COSC and METAS certified. This Seiko is undoubtedly a good watch, but your money would be far better off buying an Omega SMP or Tudor Black Bay Heritage 41, another better watch.
Good points my friend! But a Seiko just has that magic!!;)
Agree, I love Seiko (as so many of us do), love the look, nice movement but not the best, especially at this price point. At this hefty a price there are A LOT of options from A LOT of brands with equal heritage and (most) are COSC certified. We know Seiko builds some incredible watches and this one doesn't disappoint, but I would be hard pressed to lay down my hard earned cash for this one.
It's $3380 @ sakura watches 😉
Ooooooo?!
hold the phone, more than $4000 and no signed crown... come on Seiko wtf. great review very entertaining as usual!
