    Faye lives in the past
    Jet lives in the present
    Ed lives in the future
Spike lives in all three, tormented by some, and never accepting others

Ed lives in the future, but she's happy and enthusiastic not because it is ideal that we live in the future, it's only because Ed is young and unexposed to the harsh realities of life. Eventually her past will catch up to her as the future starts appearing more gloomy, but that comes with adulthood. I think Jet's way of living is the present is, not necessarily the "best", but the most stable and peaceful. Spike's best moments are when he's living in the present, his most childish when he's thinking of future prospects, and his worst when he's dwelling on the past.

@@greyfox4838 Felt more like Jet was stuck in the past for me, BUT he did eventually learn to move forward after meeting the woman who stopped time for him and getting some form of closure from their encounter. I remember he always kept a momento of her (was it a broken watch?) on him and to signify him finally letting go, he threw it in the water and walked away without looking back. He even mentioned how time had been at a stand-still for him ever since she left.

Have you noticed how the characters represent the 4 elements?
    Spike is like Water
    Jet is like Earth
    Faye is like Fire
    Ed is like Air
Spike talks about his fighting style and how it's fluid like water. They call Jet the running rock. Faye lost her memories in a fiery explosion. And Ed gave a paper windmill as a parting gift to the crew.
Their personallities and temperaments represent the elements as well.

I’ve been feeling empty lately and just try to feel something so it leads me to try and reconnecting with those from my own past but I get nothing. I could say that my past relates a bit more to jet's past, the sudden and unexplained "goodbye"(i mean, she didn't even say anything, just started to ignore me on social media(she moved, but we met two or three months before it) and in a week i realised)

Spike's story shows the consequences that happen when you try to run from your past. Jet ran, but after some time, came back and confronted it. He didnt let go of his past, he found solace in closure and came to terms with what had happenes. Faye never really ran from what happened. In fact she ran towards it. She too never let go of her own past, but came to be contempt, knowing that what she had could never be recovered and thats something she will just have to live with. But Spike was trying to leave the past behind, only confronting it when it had already appeared in front of him. His avoidance of his past life caused his regrets to grow inside of him. By the time he found the courage to seek it out, Julia was dead. It was Spike's inability to come to terms with what happened that ended up killing him. His story shows that it isnt about letting go of the past and moving on, but instead coming to terms with it and the fact that "you're gonna have to carry that weight" with you, always.

    • @garrettsanders7515
      @garrettsanders7515 Рік тому +8

That’s certainly a possible interpretation, but I don’t think it’s the most straightforward interpretation of the source material. Instead, I think something more tragic is implied. Spike DIDN’T let go of his past, as is often referred to by his mentions of seeing the past in one eye and running off without consideration for the Bebop’s crew whenever Julia or Vicious were mentioned, but I also don’t think that we can accuse Spike of running from his past either. Rather, it seems like he jumped at every opportunity to confront the ghosts of his past: Vicious and Julia. Spike’s problem is that he is prevented from moving on by both his love for Julia and also the threat of Vicious, who is actively hunting him to kill him, even when others assumed him dead. Spike can’t directly confront his past either - because Vicious doesn’t exactly play fair. Vicious is protected by the Syndicate, and he never attacks Spike without backup. He also can’t confront Julia because she too is in hiding. So Spike doesn’t really have any choice but to live this dream that he can’t wake up from: a life apart from the realest and therefore most important love he’s ever known, yet one that’s unable to end. I do agree with your conclusion that Spike dies because he can’t let go of the past. His attack on the Syndicate is practically suicidal and his dialogue give us indications that he’s totally ready to die. Whether that’s right or wrong, who can say? Spike did a moral thing in risking his like to kill Vicious. Vicious would have never stopped coming after the Bebop crew and would have been a cruel leader of the Syndicate. Spike’s direct attack was probably his best chance. It’s not clear to me at all that he really had any other choice. Maybe he could have asked Jet and Faye for help, but… that’s just not his style to ask his friends to put their lives on the line for his past life of crime.

no matter how many of these deep dive bebop videos i watch i always get something new out of each one. everyone presents their personal journey with this show and all bring something a little different to the table. for example, til now i havent heard anyone that was sure about where ed went when she left. i always thought she probably went looking for her father, but you saying she decided she didnt belong with bebop OR her father makes more sense to me.
i think most people, including myself, relate to this show so much is because they see a little bit of themselves in each of the bebop crew. i see my yearn for spontaneity and adventure in Ed. i see my selfish disdain for other people in Faye. I see the weight of my past and the lessons I try to teach others in Spike. in Jet i see the happiness i find in simply living in the present and being happy to not let my past weigh me down.

Because what is death worth, if you cannot put weight against it?
Sage, thank you so much for your content. I bet you are an amazing person and I am glad to catch one glimpse of you through this medium.
I'm also gonna take a lesson from this and write my mother a letter tomorrow. I never wanted to part from her, but she pushed me away 7years ago. It always hurts me when I think of her, but that's the thing: I am hurting myself by holding on to how she was. She is in the past now, I will accept that and forgive... I think myself? Why swim against the current if you can go with it? I am accepting that life without her is still life, and that's okay. Whether she wants me or not, I'll just go my own way and if we ever cross paths, I'll just spread my arms for a hug.

The beauty of cowboy bebop is that its almost entirely made up of the past, all of the characters inevitably return to that exact past, even when trying to stay away from before hand. This is what makes the show up too, with little plot aside from what I just described makes it seem like it wouldn’t be that great of a show, but it is, its art, it is so beautiful because these backgrounds are so different and emotionally compelling, and after the middle point of the show, you can feel the shift in emotions in characters as they run back into this past, and this makes the shows beauty.
Cowboy bebop is a bunch of gifts tied together with emotions and a webbing of story, it’s an amazing experience.

To me that final line ties the narrative in a bow. The entire show is about your past, your trauma and how it effects you. I think the end moral of the story to me is that no matter how well or how poorly you carry it, we all carry that weight of our past. And no matter how you choose to move forward, you’ll always move forward carrying that weight.

It makes the most sense thematically that Spike is dead, yet somewhere deep down I still have hope that Jet and Faye went after him, fought off Vicious' goons, and fixed him up in the Bebop and they're still out there going going on adventures and are finally all moving on...

Canon lyrics written in Julia’s POV:
Don't care for me, don't cry
    Let's say goodbye, Adieu.
    It's time to say goodbye,
    I know that in time
    It will just fade away
Canon lyrics written in Spike’s POV:
    Love never dies
    Love never fails
    Love never, ever fades away

Personally, the show has always been pretentious for me BUT I agree it's a well told tale.
The fact that Spike has had only one working eye the entire time is such a great metaphor for how he sees the world. He literally has one eye blinded by the past. Now *_THAT_* was good.

I think Cowboy Bebop is an excellent way that shows how the Past effects our future.
The entire show is a image to our fascination with the Past. Be that in its old western, nior Asthetic. Or the complexity of the characters.
To me the Bebop is a place of limbo. A place lost souls journey too before they can move on.
The past can hold a lot of power over us. It's import to recognize the present.
