I usually respect differences in matters of taste, but saying this is 'horrible' is like saying Hendrix f**ked up All Along the Watchtower. Lennon would have loved it -- all the haters need to check and see where their soul went! She kills it, and the slide guitar is monster.
Talk about an excellent version of this classic. just do not see enough of her and her work. The guitar work is really good too.She really makes this her own song. ....bc
Awesome to see this vid! when they did this tribute on MTV, all of it was an impromptu effort days after his death, with additional artist still calling in to be apart of it when it was airing. Natalie Cole did "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds". and rocked it! All the artist did what they could to pay tribute to John.
Wow, it's like this song was written about Cyndi's life. Abused at home, beaten by the nuns in Catholic school. And all the rest of the lyrics are so spot on as well. I bet she didn't have any difficulties feeling each word she sang on that stage. And I love it that she didn't try to copy the original, but did her own thing instead.
Does anybody know where I can find this whole tribute? I recorded it a long time ago but accidentally recorded over it. BTW check out Elton John covering Imagine
It's a really fresh take but it somehow has the spirit of Lennon. It has that rawness and Cyndi is into it. She did a great version of Joni Mitchells "Carey". Now she does the best version of Working Class Hero since...Lennons original. She's underrated. Woefully underrated!
Listen to the words. Lennon end by ask others to 'just follow me'. He never asked to 'just become me'. This is an anthem. That means others need to sing it, not copy it. At least she has the fortitude to try. Perhaps you are milesaboveu, but you'll be coming down fast with negativity like this. The best musician I know has perfect pitch, and I have never heard him give an unkind word about anyone who honestly tried to make music. Art is for sharing, especially this anthem.
I did this song with my band in the 80s. It's simple stylistically, but you can't do it mechanically, it's one of those songs that if you're faking it, it shows through and ruins everything. It's a hard song to do right, and we did pretty well with it. So the critics need to try to cut a little slack and try to understand that people like Lauper, Green Day, Faithfull, Bowie, etc. are doing a TRIBUTE, not a COVER.
Take this anyway you want but I personally think that very few American Singers - although there are many good ones out there, can get away with covering a Lennon song - you only have to listen to how Madonna murdered Imagine - to agree (mind you she also killed American Pie), but every cover I've heard Cyndi Lauper do is spot on! She is a fantastic singer!
Vangelisideras - Thank you for that. I've been trying for years to identify that guitarist. He's absolutely brilliant on this track. I know she's great, but this fella lifts the whole performance to a much higher level. BTW, Who is Tim Renwick? Do you know who he's played with? Just so skilled and confident. Tim, if you're reading this, you're a hero mate. Cheers.
I can return to this version of the song repeatedly and still get a chill. Lauper, who deserves all the fame Madonna got, makes this perhaps the best rendition of "Working Class Hero" I've ever heard. It beats out Marianne Faithfull's by the thinnest hair, and is right up there with Lennon's. She fills it with the desperation that the lyrics deserve. Excellent, excellent work.
I remember watching this live as a child. It was great to see Cyndi Lauper work it. That lady knows how to rock.
Love this version - brilliant !
john lennon's works are timeless...like imagine, this song will live forever..!!!

The classic Lennon' song became as a ritual with this Cindi's version, she said at the end of her cover: " thanks John", an we say also "Thanks Cindi"
Rael Real NO She said Thank You and Thank You John
Your voice, Cyndi, cut like a knife in some sweating hand, and John feels so great. And the band is perfect for this.🌈🌛(from Jujuy,Argentina)
Thank God for giving us Cyndi Lauper.
cyndi amazes me everytime
Lead guitar is awesome.
to each his own ,but i think its the best cover of all.just love it
Dont you just love her spirit ! ......and her talent thanks Cindi
Cindy can hold Church with Working Class Hero
This is RAD!! to those who hate...just because it is different doesn't make it terrible.
Fascinante, me encanta....

carlos magno Morais Concordo contigo.

WAW!
I didn't know Cyndi did a rendition of working class hero, i am addicted to Marianne's version i guess. This was kool!
Hey haters, Bob Dylan complimented her on this.
Where?
powerhouse!
What a treat in this week! This is quite the most stunning piece of music/theatre I have come across in ages. John would be thrilled!!!
Alright... nice!
LISTEN to John Lennon's version - THAT'S HOW it should be done.Although I still love Marianne's and Cyndi's versions....
tripplr thump!!! :)
anyone know how to get a better version? I mean better quality recording.
This is one of my favorite songs! She sings it so well.
Cyndi works the animal and has the man hangin' on every proletarian word. She;s got the look! Cyndi foils the man.
Cyndi Lauper covering Marianne Faithful's cover of a John Lennon classic inspired by a Bob Dylan tune. All four unique and powerful musical souls!
I remember watching this years ago, and it wowed me big time! I love this woman's voice.
@TThom2 which version is "not comparable or in the same weight class" as whom?
LOVE!!!
STILL one of my favorite renditions of this song. Go Cyndi. Awesome voice.
Luv my girl! Always.
now this is how to do a cover tune! green day should do some woodshedding with this vid to see what they missed
fucking great! JL b proud
Does anybody know where I can find this whole tribute? I recorded it a long time ago but accidentally recorded over it. BTW check out Elton John covering Imagine

cyndi is so cool....
That was SWEET!!

WoW Cyndi's emotions come thru, beautiful job

scary song of all times
She is a goddess, goosebumps when she sings. Her band kicks ass as well.
Anyone who can sing acapella in a large venue and pull it off is a great singer. I've seen Cyndi do that in the eighties. What a voice!
They did a great job on this song, but...anyone know who her band members are? They are all really amazing.
Cyndi has one of the best voices in pop music still today. I love her cover of this!
Nice work, Cyndi has style and does a great job with this classic Lennon song.
Good to see Dave Edmunds too.
i love cyndi!! every song she makes are amazing ay
this is pretty cool too! that was nice of her!
As someone said. There is a version that tops all. Jerry Williams.
Great version !
Search 1990 "IMAGINE" tribute.

Murray Reiss Tim Renwick
Vangelisideras - Thank you for that. I've been trying for years to identify that guitarist. He's absolutely brilliant on this track. more like the faithful version
Lauper is gorgeous. And she is especially beautiful here. And this tune suits her voice perfectly
who's the guitarist? he good
Is it the guitarist from Queen. I'm not sure but it looks like it to me!
