I'm growing cucamelons and tzimbalos this year as annual exotic edibles. Easy from seed. The Chilean guava (Ugni molinae) is a good choice for a low growing shrub that produces exotic fruit. I also grow the hardy kiwi vine and Tropaeolum tuberosum which has edible tubers.
Enjoyed that Craig. I made the mistake of bringing in the luxurians and boy did it sulk I've it cut back and repotted and out in the tunnel again under a fleece protection zone.
I’m 66 still contorting in a greenhouse the same size and you are right keeping it clean is a chore I have shelves like you to house more. However I also used my 1 car garage which is not heated to store more larger plants this past winter here in Florida 8b/9A because we had to 3 nights in low 20s F for 3 nights with 20-30 mph winds. Found many tropicals do just fine like this for a week or more at a time. Just a little work moving them in and out but worth it as far as I’m concerned
Hey Craig. Great to see the collection. You mentioned the challenges this winter. My seed grown mountain papaye is probably dead. My aeoniums are all knackered. Few palm casualties but nothing major. You've done great maintaining your collection. Looks superb. Onwards and upwards to spring👍
Great video again Craig. Love the Brassaiopsis Mitis. When you take cuttings from the Begonia Luxurians mate can you do a video on it please 😁 it would be real helpful for a few people no doubt.
You also grow loquats which are edible if the flowers don't freeze. You should try growing Feijoa, tea, Camelia sinensis and Mioga ginger. Also some of the hardy Citrus. Trifoliate orange, Ichang papeda and Yuzu are the hardiest ones, while more edible ones are pure mandarin (not tangerines or clementines) and kumquat. All the other Citrus are more sensitive to cold. If you're feeling brave you could also try to get your hands on Mexican Avocado seeds (best ones include Gainesville, Del Rio, Mexicola). All of those plants are certainly hardier than the Mountain Papaya 😅
B. mitis has been totally hardy for me down to at least -8c. I've had the purple Roldana outdoors during the same period which is stem hardy to around -3c, and after that it tends to die to the ground, however, it'll sprout back up from the roots in spring (with a little mulching). They grow 2-3 feet in a summer. I'm in Dublin and regularly get frosts. Ditto on the B. luxurians. Both of mine shrivelled when I brought them indoors 😠as did S. dombeyi. I've 9 varieties and counting of banana, all growing outdoors (sort of!) I've no greenhouse 🤣
Have you tried the common house plant yucca elephantipes before in the garden? I've seen lots of uk tropical style garden blogs and videos and it doesn't get mentioned as a candidate, the internet saying its not winter hardy in uk. My one has been in my garden in the ground for 5 years now, it's in south facing fully exposed to wind, frost, snow in gosport, hampshire. It has just come out of the hard winter 2022-2023 unscathed without a blemish.
You said u want more food plants? Look up mioga zingiber, its a Ginger from japan/china, super Hardy and easy to take care off, and it got orchid flowers! Subbed and keep up the good work! ☺️
Hi Craig. I live in Sherborne and love going to the tropical gardens I think I must have bought my tetrapanax rex and my banana plant of the guy you mentioned from the plant fair as they had little green dots on the pots to show there hardy! Im really sad to see that the plant fair isnt on till September this year, I was hoping to go in spring and get the most out of my plants before the Autumn. can I ask a quick question? im growing a few seeds, cannas, dahlias, musa, and ensete once germinated will they need grow lights or is the sun enough? many thanks
Hello, I thought there was a spring fair this year, I could be wrong. So long as your seedlings are getting plenty of light that should be fine. Rotate the pots if the seeds are leaning toward a window too much 👍
Hi Craig, do you keep the bubble wrap inside the greenhouse all year round? My greenhouse is unheated and I would like to keep more plants over winter in there but it’s still really cold. Thanks

Yes, I know a few people that even go to the effort of getting them up into the attic for winter. Thanks for watching 😁👍

Hi Vincenze, thanks. Yes it has been a tough winter for exotic gardeners. It is definitely warming up now 😁
Thanks Craig l have sown some of the seeds l brought from you .
Great! 🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱

Great idea, I did a TikTok video on it a few years back I think 🌱😁
@@GrowParadise i look forward to it 👍🏼😁

Thanks for all the amazing suggestions, I will start Googling them all now 😁
Yep, Brassaiopsis mitis. Give me, give me, give me.
Haha, we all want it!
Wonderful video ❤
Thank you 👍
My Vasconcellea lost all its leaves this Winter, the trunk is still solid so I'm hoping it recovers as it warms up
I saw them recover from solid trunks at Abbotsbury subtropical gardens 👍
Always love to see what you have growing. My big mistake this year was thinking things would survive in an unheated greenhouse 🤦🏻♀️
Yes I think lots of people got caught out. I heated mine just to keep frosts off this year. Nothing grew but it didn't die. 🌱👍🙂
Wonderful - very inspiring! The plants AND the cleaning ;-)
Thanks so much! 😊 The plants are deffo better than the cleaning 😂

I'm hoping my outdoor Roldana grows back 🤞 the garden had a generous mulching in autumn.

@@GrowParadise thank you for taking tome to reply. I will look into the plant fair.
That is a lot of plants in a very small greenhouse.
Would love to have a Canna, would you have any on your site any time soon?
I will have a few available soon, probably the next couple of weeks 😁🌱
@@GrowParadise you've got some stunning looking plants 👍

@@GrowParadise if you do l would like it Craig remember me please thanks Steve.

Hello, yes I do. It makes the panels more like double glazing so in summer I just hang shade netting underneath it and it's been perfect 😁👍
