Wild Turkey 101 is an excellent example of how a good bourbon doesn't need to be expensive.
I'm a DIE HARD WT 101 lover. And having one as I'm typing this.
Great review!
Wt 101 is one of the best values in burbon and my daily sipper .
Rare breed is my favorite available whiskey. Although The best I had is old forester 1920
Another fantastic inexpensive whiskey is Te Bheag ( scotch)
You guys should review that one.
Cheers
WT 101 & Rare Breed are both really underrated gems, both exceptional.
Absolutely, 100%
1986 I had my first WT101 in the barracks and never looked back, good stuff!
Which branch? And that's pretty awesome, probably a most underrated Bourbon in my opinion
Bourbon Blind Army 19D10 Cav Scout, 3/8th cav, 8th ID out of Mannheim Germany
Awesome man! I was Navy Seabees, and Jason was Marines. Much love man
@@BourbonBlind Thank you both for your service! My brother Lorne retired from the SeaBees in 1984, after 24 years.
I really enjoyed your review, because, as mentioned, it lacked a pile of bullshit! WT101 is my everyday bourbon. I run through 4-5 liters a month, and a couple of 750s of Rare Breed.
BTW, Eddie Russell said on the Bourbon Pursuit Podcast #74, that 101 is 7.5 to 8 years old. Jimmy says 7 to 9. Wild Turkey does "an Extra Summers' Aging", so 6 to 8 becomes 7 to 9!
Thanks again, young fellers!
Scott
@@scottbechler9975 Thanks Scott, that's pretty awesome, and great info!
Wild Turkey is probably the best money can buy. For a little over $20 this is a steal.
Agreed! And TTB just approved a label for Russell's 13 year Barrel Proof! Oh what a great time!
WT 101 is a staple in my bourbon drinking. I can get it for $17 a bottle here in KY...
Wild Turkey is my current favorite distillery. I love Rare Breed and Russel's picks. I need to grab some 101 as a daily or warmup.
There's really not much better than Russell's picks
I did a blind taste test with Wild Turkey 101, old grand dad bonded, Breckenridge, and Jack Daniels Single Barrel Select.
Wild Turkey 101 came in 1st (loved it)
Old grand dad bonded came in 2nd
Jack Daniels distant 3rd
Breckenridge 4th
All great whiskeys I would pick WT 101 😃🥃🦃as best of those four
This is a BS free review and in my opinion it's dead on.
Way late to the comments but got my first bottle of 101 and to me it beats anything I've ever had. Is a hug in a glass. Thank you for not saying "cloying" .
We've blinded this a couple times now, and it never dissappoints
This is my go to bourbon. I would say it's underatted, but I want it to stay affordable. Right now, I can find the shooters for a dollar, while the 750's are $23-25. Great video guys!!! Cheers
I stayed away from this based on the bourbon snobs. I watched this review and picked up a 1.75L for $32.99 at my local store. That breaks down to $14 for 750ml. I love this stuff!!! It is NOT rough, not hot, and does not burn. Great balanced flavors that are as smooth as a strippers bottom. My daily sipper.
Awesome Jimmy! I'm glad you stepped out and like it!
Rub a dab of it in your hands and watch the dill aroma explode! Also check out Evan Williams Bottled in Bond white label...handle is $23 and my craft cocktail bourbon.
@@andrewasher2201 The White label EW BiB is a staple in my rotation for sure
$18 all day in SoCal. Long time favorite of mine.
Miss you guys. WT101 is great.
I love the concept...a blind review is really the most objective way to do reviews. I love scotch, but I wanted to see what bourbon’s all about and found out that I really like bourbon too...surprise, surprise! Anyhow, your review convinced me to go out and pick up a bottle of this and I am so glad I did. It is so rich, full of flavor, and...smooth. Thanks for the review of this fantastic whiskey!
Thanks Macs! Glad you like it, cheers!
Thanks Macs! I'm glad you enjoy it, and we agree, bound is the best easy. It doesn't always come out like you would think, but it's honest, cheers!
I think it is great that we can get WT 101, OF signature, and Early Times BiB at a really good price (like $25) and get really good bourbon. Don't tell anybody. Like your reviews. Keep them coming.
Thanks Tom! cheers!
Try the OGD bib.
You guys dropped a lot of whiskey wisdom in this video. I really dig the blind format and your valuations. Keep up the great work!
Wild Turkey 101 is the best, I️ get this nostalgic feeling of being out hunting during the winter time.
Like many others, my impressions of this brand are colored by my high school experiances of it as high-heat affordable hootch. Thanks to reviews like this I have been drinking it at bars over the past year and always enjoy it. Just got a liter of the 101 and man, it really is some good stuff. Not only do I preder it to Russell's Reserve, I think it's as good if not better than Henry McKenna, which I like a lot.
Thanks! And I would definitely say it's better than Henry McKenna 10!
John Wayne’s favorite whiskey. He had cases of it shipped to filming sets when he’d be away from home.
That's super awesome! Doesn't surprise me though, but still awesome
Yes! You guys are wise! I love my Wild Turkey!
WT is the bomb! RR Single Barrel is easily one of my favorites!
I agree 💯 Wild Turkey is a great buy I bought a pint today it was $17 out the door which I thought was too high but I only had one shot left in my bottle I've drank 2 fifths in a week I also like old forester rye $21 out door but the store is 10 miles one way out of the way and I work 11 hrs a day on second shift so time is limited usually have 4-5 shots after midnight and watch your videos I've tried around 30 different bottles under $40 Dickle bottled in bond is another fav
Shhhhhh, you guys are going to drive up the price! :)
I’ve told people that I’m afraid it will go up in price one day and every time they chuckle at me as if they’re thinking “that stuff is like gasoline, you’re crazy.” I don’t think it’s going up anytime soon, the internet is the only place I’ve found people who like it as much as I do.
First - 101 is the biz. Will always have a home on my shelf! That said, one to try if you have not....Evan Williams BiB.
Agreed Charlie, on both accounts. EW BiB is probably my favorite bottom shelf Bourbon
And we'll add it to the list!
Just found a EW bonded at my local shop for $19. Delicious. Very thin tasting, not much of a development but has a very pleasent candy corn finish! I loved it. Past tense because I drank the bottle in a week.
Good bourbon does not have to be expensive. Old Granddad bib is very tasty.
OGD BiB is very tasty, actually what I usually put in my flask for weddings and such ;)
Thanks for these videos. I have just started my bourbon journey and find the information very valuable. I bought a bottle of WT101 recently, and it disappeared far too quickly. I will have to remedy that soon. Of all the bourbon that I have tried, it is my favourite.
Awesome Terry! Thanks! We're happy to help
For years I have enjoyed Wild Turkey 101 but recently I purchased 2 bottles with the same lot number and had a very off taste. I have been in contact with their costumer service and they indicated that this has been a recent issue and assured me that they would replace my purchase with a replacement. It has been a month and they have yet to make good on their promise. Customer service is key to any product, and will be switching to Maker’s Mark.
Bought a bottle of WT101 3 days ago for $20.69, no way could I pass that by. One of my favorites. I usually get some spice, but surprised that you didn't nose orange zest. I was drinking WT101, BT and Weller last week and the orange zest just jumped out , especially on the first taste. The lingering taste for me was sweet orange slices. Yes. WT 101 is great and is getting hard to find in my area of IL. PS: drinking a sip of BT now, a caramel candy bomb!
That's awesome! Yeah, didn't get that this time, but I could totally see that thinking about it now
I keep it, drink it, and recommend it. Love it.
tastes great and kicks ass
Yes 101 is better than white 10 year Russell's. Bought both bottles and 101 is much better to me. I was shocked how much more I liked 101.
It's just so dang good. But the red russells reserve single barrel is something special. But I agree, the 10 year just isn't my thing
10 years is too old for me. Dont care for the dry woody taste. 101 is 7 and half years in the bottle according to Jimmie. 12 year EC is the only older whisky I like.
Great video! You should try it against Long Branch
That would be pretty cool, we'll have to add that to the list as a set
If the mash bill that I keep seeing online is correct WT is not a high rye Bourbon. I think it’s like 13%. I believe the #4 barrel char is responsible for a lot of the spice in the whiskey. Whatever it is it’s really good
Good observation. There is no legal definition for what is considered high rye bourbon. To one brand it’s 13%, to another it’s 40%. Much like small batch, small to Jim Beam could be thousands of barrels. With many of the old brands in the 6-10% rye range WT would be considered high rye at the time. Newer distilleries have taken this % much higher and branded their products high rye usually 20%+. Wild Turkey is the greatest and that’s just the way it is! Cheers!
Cheers!
Thank you
Yessir!
Lately I've been getting a peanut butter and jelly thing from WT101 and rare breed. In a really good way haha.
Wt101 def fights out of its weight class. Great value.
Oh yeah, for sure!
Have you done wild turkey 101 vs Knob Creek?
101 is my favorite
Eddie Russell said on Bourbon Pursuit Ep. 74, that 101 is 7,5 to 8 years old. Jimmy always claims 7 to 9 years old.
I'd like to see yu do a review on Stagg JR.
Great review fellas! Never had a wild turkey product! Have Russell’s Reserve single barrel and Rare Breed in the pile. Spotted Kentucky Spirit store pick and Diamond recently, Have u sampled the Kentucky Spirit or Diamond? Cheers! 🥃👍
Press Man Russell's Reserve and Rare Breed are both a favorite of ours. Kentucky sprit is usually pretty good, but given the choice I'd go for the Rare Breed. I haven't tried the diamond yet, but have with the 17 and decades, both are really good, but dunno about with the price, that's a hard one at that cost, personal decisions. I could but 3 RR or RB for the same price
Russells single barrel is probably in my top 5. I love that one
Got this one last week in Virginia for the price of a bottle of Jack.
Love that Turkey!!!!!!
Wow. Almost embarrassed to admit I never tried 101 before, having stuck mostly to Elijah Craig and Knob Creek. But now I've cracked open the 101 bottle I only bought a few days ago. So, drinking along with you boys, I find the high proof potent, but not off putting. This is like a down-the-line bourbon flavor reference. And because it has a reference taste, it has no forward pecularities that will become tiresome with extended imbibing. Pouring some over ice it's like a summer refreshment for those evenings on the porch. Should be a standard in stock in every bar. At $30/1L it's a steal and shows what is possible without high prices.
PalJoey1957 soon like you are enjoying it!
Hi Pal, How do you compare WT 101 with Knob Creek? Wich one you like the most?
101 is better than most that cost twice as much same with heaven hill green label
Damn good bourbon, always has a space on my bar.
Always in regular rotation!
Love WT 101. my go to daily but put the cap on the sharpie for gods sake.
Honestly, I like WT101 better than Russel's Reserve 10 year.
Me too Kevin. For whatever reason, I'm not big on the 10 year, but the 101 and Russell's single barrel are my top favorites. The Single Barrel Rye is really good also.
@@BourbonBlind cool, I will try those. thanks
I like the sweetness I get from Buffalo Trace. Is Wild Turkey 101 just as sweet / sweeter?
Not quite as sweet, it’s a bit dryer. I’d say it is sweet but has quite a bit more spice. If you let it sit for 10 minutes before drinking, it might get that Buffalo Trace sweetness you’re looking for. Definitely worth a try, I hope that in 8 months you’ve since tried it.
@@evanjohnrobasci7356 Hey thanks! Yes, I did end up getting a bottle and I like it a lot. I find myself reaching for the 101 more than the Buffalo Trace. Now I'm wondering if Rare Breed is worth the extra?
Turkey smells strongly of vanilla to me. Surprised neither of you have picked up that note.
It may very well have been in there, we try not to go too much into the (what I call) "standard" Bourbon flavors unless there isn't much more there. We'll try and notate that now in the future though, or we may have smelled it as a different flavor, as everyone tastes and smells differently. Glad you like it though!
Decent review. Ya'll need to get a better quality microphone.
Do Bookers!
We'll put it on the list!
Do you guys overestimate on most blind tastings?? This is the 3rd or 4th video I've been where you guestimate over double the actual price of the bottle
Statistically speaking, yes, by about 10-20 percent. However, there's some cheaper bottles that are just fantastic.
$17-$20 here in Los Angeles all day. Ive actually never seen it over $22
Nice!
I just got this bourbon on sale for $18
Good score!
is it bad of me...but i have never had the 101 ..i have just killed the 81 and I have a rare breed..lol cheers !
The 101 is where it's at!
@@BourbonBlind I know you love it Kyle..just never seem to grab it..lol
i am on bottle number 2 of this now...lol so good.
You need to go back and do these over know that you have experienced more bourbon
That's a really great idea
Where's the comments of the dill!!!
Ha funny, I also did not like Russell's 10 year.
RR10, the only WT product I don't care for
There is No way you didn’t know what it was.
Underrated? Not by me...
$22
Wt 101>buffalo trace and eagle rare
Totally!
