Vegetable oil can be used as an alternative fuel in diesel engines and in heating oil burners. When vegetable oil is used directly as a fuel, in either modified or unmodified equipment, it is referred to as straight vegetable oil (SVO) or pure plant oil (PPO). Conventional diesel engines can be modified to help ensure that the viscosity of the vegetable oil is low enough to allow proper atomization of the fuel. This prevents incomplete combustion, which would damage the engine by causing a build-up of carbon. Straight vegetable oil can also be blended with conventional diesel or processed into biodiesel, HVO or bioliquids for use under a wider range of conditions.

It's a much better option for the environment as your using that years carbon only .rudolph diesel invented the diesel engine to run on peanut oil he took the idear to the oil company's and ended up dead in the river
Cooking oil is carbon neutral. This is because of what you say; carbon is absorbed by the plant, and re-emitted when the oil is burned. It's also better for the environment because of something else you mentioned, use 2 to 3 times and discard. The oil gets discarded to a landfill, so used oil would work just as well.
Great video. The moral of this story is only use veg oil in a old diesel vehicle. Never use in a newer vehicle unless its been converted. Its a real shame that we haven't yet followed the America, system, where its possible to buy biodiesel at many filling stations. Options are:- B20 (20% bio & 80% Diesel), B50 (50/50% bio and diesel) and B90 (90% bio/10% diesel). As usual, the UK is always slow to follow other countries.
Combo 1.7 DI Isuzu engine 2003 just started using it . Have 23 litres of diesel in but will keep toping it up with new NOT used vegetable oil . Bought 20 ltr jerry can as don't want too be doing the veg oil shop all the time , you need a long nozzle for the can though which cost about £12 . Will update after a week or so £££££ saved hopefully .

You have to exercise extreme care in doing this, as modern common rail turbocharged diesel engines do not like veg oil or even bio-diesel, and this can cause a multitude of problems i.e. clogging of injectors, dpf's, egr's, diesel fuel filters, etc and can pose excessive strain on your diesel fuel pump and engine management systems, causing engine error lights to flash, especially when it is cold or freezing.
Many car van and commercial vehicle manufacturers that use common rail turbocharged diesel engines do not recommend it's use at all, and will refuse to honour warranty claims for any diesel engine damage or problems caused by unauthorized use of straight vegetable oil or bio-diesel.
Pre common rail diesel engines in pre 2001 vehicles may work with it, and many cases, do work with it, but even here, it's not completely 100% perfect.
I ran one of these on old engine oil from my oil change drum. It even had thinners in it from when I painted the unit floor. Didn’t kill it - it ran fine.
You mix it with pig gelatin powder that acts as a flocculant and drop down odors colors water and solids to the bottom to be drained off then you can mix with paraffin for thinning
years ago i bought an old peugeot the lad i bought it from had been running it on cooking oil he got from the local cash and carry it 25lt drums there was a full tank when bought it and ran great
Its probably better to use filtered waste oil from chip shops with a 97:3 spirits mixture to help with viscosity issues.
Could you make a short video where you film the deisel pump you speak of in the engine.
I have a deisel Renault modus (2005) I think I may have the same engine but would love to see the actual pump you speak of as I think it’s on my other models as well.

You should buy a 12-volt silicone heat mat and wrap it around your fuel filter for cold starts, help keep vegetable oil thin
Two tank system is the way to go. Next you need to heat the vegetable oil to at least 160 f before running it through the injection pump. Cold vegetable oil won't spray well and it will gum up rings and injectors. Good luck with the project!
Acetone lowers the viscosity so it behaviour is more like diesel oil.

I enjoyed the video. Thanks for making it. I suppose it comes down to capacity. Does the world producers of sunflower oil have sufficient capacity to produce the equivalent volume of diesel, which in all likelihood it doesnt, and thus, increased demand will result in increased cost, probably to a price higher than the cost of diesel.
Good point but it begs many questions.
The point here is that the vegetable oil produced goes in to a lot of deep fryers and then just gets discarded, where it could be cleaned up or converted to biodiesel and reused. So it is a trickle-down market. See where i'm going with this?
Yes guys don't do this on a new diesel, it will kill it. Also you will find veg oil going up to the same price as diesel soon.

@@theliverpoolkop6331 not the engine itself but all the sensors and other electronic equipment attached, a modern diesel will not run without electric, a mechanical diesel will.

I was using vegetable oil in my Land Rover discovery on and off for about 10 years no problem iused to mix it with diesel just found in the winter months slightly harder to start up first thing in the morning other than that no problems I then bought a petrol car I’ve just got rid of it after a few years gone to diesel again and I am definitely going to get some sunflower oil or vegetable oil, certainly not going to pay these prices at nearly £2 a litre and if I don’t use new stuff I shall go round to some restaurants and chip shops and ask them can I have this I will filter it myself great idea suggest anybody interested go ahead and do it maybe not in modern cars anyway I found no problem I’m going to use it again.

Your van's engine is the dw8 not the xud. It has the Lucas pump I believe, not the best for running veg oil. Good luck! I've been running waste veg oil in my pug 205 for more than ten years now never had any problems apart from the occasional clogged filter. But my car has a xud7 engine with a Bosch pump. I also thin the oil with petrol or run a mix of oil and diesel.
Burning vegetable oil is better for the environment than diesel less pollution. If you're not going to degum the vegetable oil you should have two tanks and start and finish on diesel to keep injectors and pump clean from gum.
Be careful, cooking oil will destroy injector pump seals over a perion of time, and don't use 'thick' fuels, ie, old oil, new oil, cooking oil ect in a common rail diesel engine, you risk blowing the high pressure pump apart.
Never use cooking oil in a high pressure common rail injection system the mechanical pump will take it
Veg oil is now £5.00 for three litres or £1.66.6 at Tesco. 10.4.2023. Diesel not cheaper.

Hilux has been on it every summer haven't had no problems still going strong just straight oil been fine 👌
I have noticed the Berlingo has been running much smoother with the sunflower oil and the engine sounds smoother

Would you be able to use the cooking oil in the chinese diesel heater you installed in your garage?
I use petrol to thin the oil. 10 to 20% depending on temperature. Even some modern engines will run on thinned oil.
Would you risk it on your new BMW or Mercedes though?
I used that on a 2017 Citroen C4
better thin it with kerrosene . not perish rubber seals like petrol. & 70p per ltr

Absolutely not, far too modern. Need a mechanical pump (Bosch) ideally. Usually engines produced before 2000
I tried sunflower oil in my 2020 Berlingo (same car as in here) but different eco engine. It was mixed (in the tank) 15 litres and about 4 litres of fossil diesel.
It ran to the end of the street from on what was left in the system and then it failed. Maybe it was too thick for the fuel pump. The RAC patrolman said that sometimes newer cars will detect it if the emissions are different and will shut your engine down. It had to be fixed (as an insurance job) with a report of misfuelling. It had to go to an engine specialist who had to change the injectors and other things. They said that the insurance might not pay and it would cost 1400 GBP. I need to find somewhere that sells real biodiesel as my usual supplier has stopped selling it.
I wouldn't have put oil in a 2020 car they aren't make for it

I did this for 7 years, a couple of pointers firstly you need a common rail diesel engine and a Bosch fuel pump which is built to stand veg oils with Bitrex oil seals, any other make of pump will clog up with veg oil eventually or leak and it will destroy the fuel pump unless you add 50% diesel to the mix. its a surefire way to kill the fuel pump and diesel fuel pumps are not tiny little inexpensive things like petrol cars have they are huge and very very expensive to replace something in the region of £1500.00 rebuilt. then you will need it fitted to the engine and the timing redone to. hardly worth the effort . in the winter below 10 degrees C the oil will freeze inside the pump if you dont add up to 10% petrol to the oil to stop it freezing as veg oil has no antifreeze in it at all. its not worth promoting this if you dont know the facts and end up claiming stupidity because you didnt know it would destroy the pump. stick to Citroens and peugeots circa 1990. they had Bosch fuel pumps in them Citroen currently no longer use Bosch fuel pumps to save money on engine builds and an HDi diesel will not tolerate veg oil at all the injectors will clog up and at £300 + a pop its an expensive mistake. carbon dioxide is lower but Nitrogen Dioxide is higher so no its not really more enviromentally friendly. Nitrogen Dioxide is now turned into water in modern diesels with the use of addblue adative. Rudolph Diesel designed his diesels to run on Nut oil. you can run 2499 litres of veg oil in your car tax free but you must make written records of how much you put in your car for HMRC if they ever dip your tank and ask for your records anything over 2499 litres a year and youll need to pay some tax.

Due to your comments of all the fuel mixtures, I wanted to ask you guys how could you make a good fuel mixture for a common rail system? Would guess there is still a way. Any "recommendations"? I have seen this video ua-cam.com/video/Sdyl7u_qwTw/v-deo.html , and was quite surprised how some plants would actually have the potential to go against this "EV- necessity" the media is talking about. How about if we all grow some hemp or sunflowers in our own garden? Just an idea..
Common rail use extreme high pressure almost 1800 bar and emission sensor will shut the engine off if higher than usual value, i would suggest you only try on a junk car that you dont care about. Maybe try 5%veg 95%diesel, if it still runs, next time try 5% increments ie 10%/90%, 15%/85% etc
Cooking oil is much more expensive then diesel or gasoline. So it doesn't make sense

It will have a high pressure common rail injection system so I wouldn't use cooking oil
What percentage did you run the old transit on veg?.
@@garyburchgb it's was a 1999 transit and I ran it on 100% used oil I got from local chippy, had to filter it a few times and when it started spluttering then I changed the oil filter as the oil brings out all sorts of carbon build up and after that was fine, lasted a good year then swapped it for an old frontera with the maintenance guy at the apartment I lived in back then haha
@@mrukvanlife cheers for the reply. We've got an old 96 transit we run on 50/50 with diesel. Running 1/3 diesel, 2/3s veg with a splash of petrol now today as an experiment. Will know tomorrow how well it starts from cold. It's good to know you managed to run it 100% on veg, I don't think I'm brave enough to do that though as I don't want to stress the fuel pump too much. I know you can get away with a lot more in the milder/summer months though.

Diesel is oil essentially just thinner than a lot of oils. In the old days Diesel engine vehicles were listed on the logbook as heavy oil.
As long as it’s a mechanical pump older diesel there’s no way you’ll kill it you may just have to change fuel filters a bit more frequently.

veg oil wont provide same compression so failing to work effective or cause engine problems

As I have shown in the video just buy from the supermarket and put it in 2000 miles and still going strong
There is another product that you can use in a diesel engine that is a LOT cheaper than cooking oil and it gives no emissions but the government doesn't want people to know about it. I have all my vehicles running on it and all start and run perfect and there is a very slight improvement in overall performance.

@@jigsey. biodiesel, you take vegetable oil and mix it with 20% by volume ethonol/methanol and 0.5% lye, mix ot and leave it for 3 days it will separate into a small amount of glycerine at the bottom (used to make soap) and diesel on top.
It is functionally identical to regular diesel and can be used in all modern engines just fine.
