If you and your horse are staring at a heap of tangled tack, wondering which bit goes where, we hope this might help you both.
A whole video could be made about any part of this harness (bits, for instance, are always a hot topic in working horse circles!), so this is the potted version. You will find that all harness sets are different, but the basic parts should be there - a collar that the horse pushes into (or breastband), a saddle to hold everything up (or straddle as I always called it), the breeching (the brakes of the system), and the traces (that go to the cart). Even when it’s all on you will have to alter it to fit your horse comfortably - because horses are always different too!

As a harness trainer, I found this video incredible useful! My novice students found your video uncomplicated, easy, and very good narrated. Your voice is easy to understand, even for those not good at English. You explain every piece of harness in a very comfortable voice, and so that it is easier to understand. Thank you very much!

She is such a fine filly. I know you said, in her breeding, she is calm and easy tempered. However, it is very obvious that her ground work has been exemplary. I have worked with many horses in my lifetime and few of them had manners as fine as demonstrated here.

I sit in front of a computer all day, and while I like my job, sometimes it can be tedious, difficult, or annoying. I live in an apartment in the city, and see a horse only once or twice a year. I've only ever used quick clip harnesses for harness racing, but we're retraining one of our retired guys for pleasure driving! looking at the pleasure harness and trying to read instructions was like reading in another language, this video had everything laid out in such simple, easy, visual terms! thank you thank you thank you!!!

My wife and I are novices at this, but the few years we have spent getting to know our donkeys, and now our mule, have been so rewarding that we have stepped it up to carting and are looking forward to growing into this hobby/form of entertainment. Thank you for sharing. What a well behaved horse. Well done on training! Great video too. You are such a sweet teacher! Lol wish I had that in England when I was learning to ride. I am a military brat and I learned to ride horses in England. My goodness they were so strict in teaching but I believe I learned from the best.
There are probably different approaches that suit some people and horses, but I'd always advocate the gentle, slow approach!

What a lovely gentle girl Flora is, and an excellent and informative video. Will subscribe to your new channel of course. We are moving our boys to Ireland in the next year or so, one retired Clydesdale/cob and two working horses; a Comtois and a coloured cob. Not sure how the Irish soil will cope with the big boys but looking forward to being able to drive them in relative safety - the roads in our part of England are no longer safe for horses.

I never realized how many steps it takes to get a horse ready to haul a cart, being a "city girl."

Dianna Diatz They're great! Slowly building in confidence and settling in. Still a little nervous, but they don't make a fuss now when we pick up their feet or brush them. we'll have to do an update vid!

I loved this video and will be looking at more of yours! I'm a beginner driver always looking for education. I noticed at the end when the driver is in the cart and the horse is moving, the traces are loose and swinging, and it looks like the cart is being pulled along by the shafts, not the traces. I wanted to keep watching that, to see if everything came into place or if the driver needed to stop and shorten the traces, but then the video was over so I couldn't see what happened next. I've been taught that the shafts are mostly to hold the cart from tipping forward or back, and to help the horse turn the cart, and that all the pulling is to be done with the traces, so pressure is on the breast collar not on the saddle. So for my education, can you tell me if those traces are too long, or if I just didn't see enough to see that they tightened up after the movie was over?

+Cynthia Eliason Good question, Cynthia. You're right, the traces are for pulling and the shafts are to keep things level. This cart is so light though, that the shafts hadn't pulled through their holders yet to tighten up the traces. Of course, on a slope, or if we were going faster, or for a little longer, they would slide until the traces became tight.
It looks very complicated, but fun.
Flora, Henry and Winnie are so pretty! I have a cob called Oreo but he's only small but big enough so I can ride him but he's only 2 years old and I have a Shetland called honey and she's a Shetland cross something

What a great driving video! Your horse is such a sweetheart! I have a question. My mare is 8, I have had her since she was 2 years old, trained her for riding when she was 4, and I have driven her probably 12 times so far. She picks up a trot well, she backs, crosses over well when I ask for a turn, etc. I have a training cart which probably weighs 250-300 pounds, it has car tires on it, and it's made of metal. She does well with it, but I am wondering if a breast collar type pulling harness isn't enough? Do you think she needs an actual pulling collar? In total she is only pulling roughly 550 pounds, when my husband and my son come along with me, including the cart. I also wonder if the cart puts too much strain on her back. Sometimes she tosses her head and that isn't like her. I'm just curious what is going on, because if it isn't the right set up I don't want to drive her in it, sore her, or cause issues for her. I hitch her up the same way you do. She is mutton withered and I'm also curious if maybe the "saddle" isn't the proper shape for her? Please help! I have pictures of her harnessed up so hopefully you can tell me if everything looks good! Thanks so much!

Hiya, I will try to help, but without seeing your set-up it is difficult to
be sure about what is going on for your horse (you mentioned that you have
photos but there weren’t any attached to your comment?). I assume your cart is a
two-wheeler? In that case the horse supports the cart with her back and you need
to carefully check how much weight she actually is asked to carry via the
shafts. If the cart is front-heavy, it is much more than if the cart has more
weight at the back. The best way to check this is to have people sit in the cart
and you lift the shafts (no horse hitched to the shafts) - you will feel the
difference in weight distribution, according to the people leaning forward or
moving to the back of the cart. It generally is a good idea to not give the
horse too much weight to carry through the shafts. Have you checked the saddle
carefully? Is it pushing on her spine/withers? Is it adjusted tightly or does it
move around a lot (this could cause discomfort)? But the head-shaking can have a
lot of different reasons. It could be her complaining about discomfort caused by
the cart, you are right. But it could also be that she doesn’t like her mouth
piece or your way of handling the reins. Or it could be all in her head - my
mare starts to shake her head when she gets insecure, nothing will stop it until
she feels more relaxed and secure again. A lot of practice and routine helps the
horse - get out in the cart as often as you can, even if it is just for 10
minutes, and praise her a lot if she does well or at least tries hard.
I hope this helps, and I hope you’ll have lots more fun with your mare and
cart!

Why put the collar over the head? There is a buckle at the top of it, unbuckle it and give their neck a "hug" with it then then clip back together.
Oh I see the Hames are already locked around the collar. I thought those released and stayed tied to the saddle. To each their own I guess.
So,where does the horse actually pull? the shafts,the traces,where?
Always the traces. The shafts are just there for brakes (and to keep the cart level)

do you roll the cart on to the horse or move the horseback onti the trailer?
The shafts approaching them on both sides and the cart coming up from behind, all at the same time, can be scary for them, so we start off by backing them in. But when they're really used to it, then you can bring the cart up to them.
