What a blast from the past! I used to collect these back in the day, even though they were pretty hard to come by in my neck of the woods; only some specialized news stands had them. What stood out for me was the artwork: throughout my teens the walls of my bedroom were covered with SF posters, many of them from this great magazine. Thanks for the opportunity of seeing these again!

My pleasure! I had a few secondhand ones in the 90's but really pleased to get these recently. Got the missing issue last week. They really are great, so pleased you enjoyed the video and that it brought back some memories 👍🙂

Thanks for this excellent video which brought back a lot of memories. The centre spread in Vol 1, number 10 shows the winners of the art competition which were reproduced poster size in subsequent issues. The overall winner, Brigid Marlin, was later commissioned by J. G. Ballard to recreate two surrealist paintings by Paul Delvaux which had been destroyed in the Blitz and only black-and-white photographs survived.

Back in 1974, I was 16,and a school leaver, and had just started work, I do remember buying this magazine from issue one to about issue 20. I think the price rises were why I stopped, but do remember having a few of the posters stuck on my bedroom wall...happy days.

Have been catching up on your videos - wow! This takes me right back to my teen years in country Queensland, Australia. I used to buy these in the main news agency in my home town. I had most of them … they were always displayed folded. Initially I think they were about A$ 2.50, but very quickly they went up to about $4.50, which was more than I could afford. This was where I read my first Stanislaw Lem story and started looking for his books. Also got me into Ballard. Thanks for going through them!

Indeed they are. That SF in Rock really jolted my memory. My brothers and I were getting into Hawkwind. And I still treasure my copy of the Ballard box set, with the Pelham pop art. Great memories.

Jules, very nice run of this large sf mag. I never collected them, they were so ungainly, but full of great art and fiction. So nice to see them all like this. I loved the Hawkwind reference and your mentioning their son ‘Quark, Strangeness and Charm’, brought back many gond memories of that band. Never saw them but i still have all the albums. Michael Moorcock was in the band and write some lyrics i think, i know he is credited on some of the albums. Hawkwind was a great spacey metal band, not so much remembered today i think. Really fun video.

I was lucky enough to find a bound edition of the first dozen issues from a Red Cross charity shop a good few years ago. There are, if I'm not mistaken some very early John Bolton black and white illustrations inside some of the issues.

OMG... My name is Jon, 65 now and as an avid reader of Sci-Fi in my Cheshire-British teens I literally papered my bedroom walls with a large percentage of SFM art. I discovered this amazing post of yours Mr. Jules Burt just yesterday: (I'm old yer know and not very Social media savvy!!) But the reason for my 'OMG' is finding out that you plan to allow us/ME to view All the Art, from Every Issue...!!! To give this some extremely personal context, my Mum had recently passed away and there was one singular, and extremely emotion invoking poster I had above my bed, and the only Poster I took with me when I emigrated to Canada when I was twenty in 1978.
It disappeared over the first few years of my acclimation into Canadian life, but the image of it and the two Donna Summer songs I played over, and over and over again while staring at this poster have stayed with me my entire life. The image and songs faded over time but Not the memory of how it made me feel and how it helped me deal with my loss. I have searched for this painting many times over many years, knowing only that it came from SFM. I have seen images here and there of the SFM Art work, invoking memories and making me look further but not for long and very infrequently. And then yesterday after finding an old, very old copy of Hook, the boosted man, and remembering that I bought it decades ago because I saw an ad for it in SFM, I went back on You Tube. And there you were, showcasing and describing every SFM mag, in sequence. Not only am I going to slowly savour your amazing page-by-page displaying of the art, I will eventually: (Hasn't happened yet..) have you find for me that image. And I will finally know exactly in which issue it is, and then I will spend the time and the money and whatever else it takes to have my Son find it for sale, out there somewhere, and I'll buy it!!
And I Will Be Forever Grateful To You For Finding It For Me! I had given up years ago.
Thank You So Much for this video.
I have barely scratched the surface of what it means to Me!
    Thank You. Jon.

Amazing Jon, really! I now also have that missing issue which I'll show in my next pick ups video. What fantastic memories of this magazine. I wish we had pictures of all the bedrooms from the 70's adorned with the posters. What a video that would be. So pleased you enjoyed this one and hope you spotted your poster 👍🙂

@@JulesBurt Thank You So Much. One last reply as I must sound like An Old Fogey to you by now, but I have to let you know that you not only showed me the image that I was looking for; (And that in itself was so important to me!) You literally opened up a 'Floodgate' of new memories with a future post!
      Let me explain.
In Vol.1, issue 11 you turned a page and I saw on the left side the name David Garnet. And the image on the half page was The Legend of GX 118. A space ship surrounded by birds. That was the image I was looking for! But it wasn't the image I remembered! (If that makes any sense!) It was a half page and was covered with text! I was thrilled but iffy on the memory which was when I replied to you.
I pretty much gave up then and figured that my memory was skewed...It happens with age! Then I just went on with your post. And then in Vol. 2 #5 you turned the page and there it was!!!
3 SFM, oversize posters for sale for 1 pound! GX 118 was one of them! Full size.
It was instant! I remember buying them and that large poster was the one on my wall.
It wasn't Donna Summer I was listening to. It was Albatross by Fleetwood Mac.
After my Dad died, she bought me the single in 1969 after we watched the music video together on Top of the Pops.
I wore it out while looking at that poster, and I'm listening to an hour long replay of it as I am typing this to you.
The birds in the poster triggered that memory, and So Many Others.
      Thank You So much.
      Forever Grateful To You.
      Jon Evers.
