It could also be another reversed causation: People that are in constant pain/discomfort might also not go outside in the sun that often, which then could cause lower vitamin D status, at least on a population scale.

Location, shade, cloud cover, weather, angle, pollution, etc ALL effect how much sunlight someone actually gets.
Most people have a D deficiency even here in Texas due to aforementioned factors. So the idea just going outside to get D is not entirely favorable.

I know my limits, but the stronger I am the more I’ve been able to stretch those limits in regards to energy levels, recovery and flare ups. I do take vit d but for other things not fibromyalgia. I have fibro and found a combo of supplements, diet, and exercise helped get rid of my symptoms. These gurus are close to the truth, its kinda the right direction, but its always so oversensationalized and wrong.
Vitamin D supplementation (I was deficient), helped my mood and joint health more than my nerve pain.
We all have unique genes and mutations and deficiencies (even an exercise deficiency which most Americans suffer from) can present in SO many different ways. Its unbelievably complicated!

Thank you Dr Layne Norton, I have Chronic pain due to a spinal injury, PTSD, Severe Depressive Disorder, Tinnitus, Fibromyalgia and sleep apnea. I was diagnosed in that order.
All these bs fad diets that get peoples hopes up, I’ve tried them all and I’ll say this the evidence suggest a balanced diet is best. I’d say if the diets like carnivore get rid of fibromyalgia then it most likely is either, purely a placebo effect, or they never had fibromyalgia.
I’ve tried lots and I mean lots of things to combat this illness. Radio frequency, pain meds, stimulator devices, lots of medications. In the end doing my own TRT and HRT protocol worked best. Along with peptides, and I’ve just started high doses of vitamin/nootropic/minerals IM injections. Some I do daily others like vitamin D3 is a 4month shot. B12 I do everyday. I’ve noticed huge differences from this alone.
I recommend people do their own research, I know for a fact that my life span is already shortened by these illnesses, so trading in a few years for me to have a few good years with my son is well worth it. I’d rather die on my feet than in a bed of old age and in tremendous pain.
I train extremely hard so that my son knows a strong will can overcome anything. I’m 6ft 2” 125kg as of today. I train heavy every session I have at the gym, to the point on leg days I need at least one day off before and after. I’ve had people say I don’t have those illnesses because of the weight I lift. I never said it was easy getting to this point, it’s difficult everyday but I persevere.
Don’t listen to fools who don’t know what they’re talking about. Remember that Fibromyalgia is not quite an immune disorder, your antibodies do stick to the muscle fibres and nerve endings this is what potentially causes the high pain, fatigue. It’s also a mitochondria issue and you need to take things that support mitochondrial DNA.

As someone who has fibromyalgia he is correct. Fibromyalgia cannot be "proven". Nothing shows up on scans or tests. It is an umbrella name. He isn't saying its not real to the person. He's saying there's no evidence in tests/scans that shows fibromyalgia. Fibro is a combination of pain and symptoms that cannot be explained.

Great video, especially the discussion about the complexities of conditions with psychological elements. Since mental states occur in our brain, which in turn is part of our body and communicates with the rest of the body, it's natural that mental states can influence bodily conditions. This in no way diminishes the legitimacy of these conditions.

I recently had a mild stroke at 50. The neurologist and doctors aren't sure why it occurred since my biomarkers were all good. I am a little over weight, but I'm still muscular for my age. As of right now I'm doing my best to slim down with weight training and walking, while eating a balanced diet. The reason I'm subjecting you to this diatribe is because the shock or trauma of the stroke has caused me to have IBS, as well as exacerbating my depression issues. I do think there is a something of a correlation between depression, anxiety and their impact on acute and chronic inflammation. Especially when you factor in placebo. The mind can heal and destroy, Anyway, what I'm getting at is that Vitamin D deficiency can cause a host of problems from mood changes to joint pain, and maybe just being sufficient can remedy some of the symptoms brought up in Gary's blanket statement. I'm not defending Gary's spiel, and even though I take Vitamin D supplementation I'm not sure of its efficacy, but I do notice that I feel better when my body is producing Vitamin D through sun exposure. Obviously, this anecdotal.

I have ‘ME/CFS’ and I believe that I’ve been diagnosed with this following the NHS’ clueless flowchart. They diagnose people with this condition as they cannot find a definitive diagnosis. What Gary is saying is kind of right, it doesn’t exist, it’s just a generic name for ‘f*ck off it’s too complex’ they just don’t look deep enough into the persons genetic, hormone or vitamin profile. Most people with fibro or CFS will actually have a different root cause and it’ll only require a little tweak. I’m doing my own research on my own body and so my answers won’t necessarily help others. I do believe Gary knows his 💩 and I’m hoping to find my tweak and by this time next year have my life back 😁

Twenty+ years ago, I participated in a study at the local medical school, department of physiotherapy. I was hooked up to clips, and monitored while being given TENS-like jolts to test my sensitivity levels. Fibro myalgia is a real thing. You can also fix it, but not with "just" vitamin D! A combination of diet, exercise, clean sleep and dealing with trauma/stress is what you need. Though we all need some D, whether it's from cod livers or the correct supplements, when we live in the Great White North! :)

But there are studies that shows a link in human studies, and one that explains the mechanism behind the VD affecting IBS syndrome. 🤷
The efficacy of vitamin D supplementation for irritable bowel syndrome: a systematic review with meta-analysis
Hangkai Huang, Linjie Lu, Yishu Chen, Yan Zeng & Chengfu Xu
    Results
We included four randomized, placebo-controlled trials involving 335 participants. The differences in IBS-SSS score between participants in the intervention group and the placebo group increased after intervention (WMD: -55.55, 95% CI: -70.22 to -40.87, I2 = 53.7%, after intervention; WMD: -3.17, 95% CI: -18.15 to 11.81, I2 = 0.0%, before intervention). Participants receiving vitamin D supplementation showed greater improvement in IBS-SSS after intervention than participants receiving placebo treatment (WMD: -84.21, 95% CI: -111.38 to -57.05, I2 = 73.2%; WMD: -28.29, 95% CI: -49.95 to -6.62, I2 = 46.6%, respectively). Vitamin D supplementation was also superior to placebo in IBS-QoL improvement (WMD: 14.98, 95% CI: 12.06 to 17.90, I2 = 0.0%; WMD: 6.55, 95% CI: -2.23 to 15.33, I2 = 82.7%, respectively). Sensitivity analyses revealed an unstable pooled effect on IBS-TS in participants receiving vitamin D supplementation. Therefore, we did not evaluate the efficacy of vitamin D intervention in IBS-TS.
Role of in vitamin D in irritable bowel syndrome
    Xiao-Lan Yu, Qi-Qi Wu, Lian-Ping He, Yong-Feng Zheng
Yu XL, Wu QQ, He LP, Zheng YF. Role of in vitamin D in irritable bowel syndrome. World J Clin Cases 2023; 11(12): 2677-2683 [PMID: 37214583 DOI: 10.12998/wjcc.v11.i12.2677]
IBS is a chronic gastrointestinal functional disorder whose etiology may be primarily relevant to gut microbiota and immune regulation. At the same time, VD can increase the number of beneficial bacteria in the gut, inhibit the inflammatory response, inhibit Th1/Th17 cells, stimulate Treg cells, and relieve the mental state of patients. However, the experiment of VD on IBS in the community population is more complicated, which increases the difficulty of the investigation and reduces the accuracy of the results. Hence, the treatment of VD on IBS is still controversial. In the future, it is necessary to carry out epidemiological studies on the relationship between VD and IBS, clinical studies on the efficacy of supplementing VD to improve IBS, and animal studies on the mechanism of VD improving IBS.
Vitamin D improves irritable bowel syndrome symptoms: A meta-analysis
Chenxi Yan, Chenmin Hu, Xiaolong Chen, Xinyi Jia, Zhenya Zhu, Diya Ye, Yuhao Wu, Rui Guo, Mizu Jiang
    Results
The meta-analysis including 6 randomized controlled trials (RCT) with 572 patients found a significant difference in IBS symptom severity score (WMD, −34.88; 95% CI, −62.48 to −7.27; P = 0.013; random-effects model) but no significant difference in IBS quality of life score (WMD, 3.33; 95% CI, −5.12 to −11.77; P = 0.440; random-effects model).

I thought about question that you might make a video about if you haven't already (I couldn't find out one about this topic).
The question is "what is the minimum effort/volume/percentage of your normal training regimen for muscle maintance"
Let's say you do chest 2 times per week (each trening 2 exercises 6-8 reps, 3 sets each 1-3 RIR, pace 4010). If you are pleased with your muscle hypertrophy and just want to maintain it let's say to no less than 85% but don't have as much time for training as you did before - how much of the traning can you cut out?
Will staying with one exercise will be enough or would it be better to do 2 sets of each, or maybe you can lower the weight and do these exercises faster (pace 2010) and with lower overall volume, or one training per week will be better option.
Finally should it be time limited i.e. no more than 8 weeks because after that muscle will nonetheless shrink compared to the before training schedule.

Fibromyalgia and ME sufferers are vulnerable people often women who can at the one end of the spectrum suffer enormously. Does he even for a minute not think they have likely tried Vit D? The first thing a GP in UK will do if you go to them with symptoms of fatigue and pain is do a comprehensive blood panel including Vit D levels. (It’s free here on or NHS) and prescribe Vit D supplements. People with these conditions would give anything to get better - it is exploitative to give false hope to people and bad enough they, again often women, are often given up on by doctors!

Not sure if it was placebo but after 3 month of regular use, I was able to tolerate certain exercises better. Before the D3 I would be in a lot of pain doing anything weight bearing. Have you been tested for pernicious anemia? Your B levels may test in normal limits, while hiding this deficiency. Please have this checked, especially if you are of European descent, it is a genetic deficiency that MANY people have, and causes these back issues. If you had H. pylori, that is another contributing factor. I refused the Cymbalta, and started doing my own research into this. Next visit - I want further testing! Yes, I'm angry.

Ngl fibromyalgia is a "diagnosis" physicians give you when they have no explanation for what's wrong with you. People seem to feel better when the problem they have has a name to it. So to be diagnosed with fibromyalgia you have to have specific trigger points located at certain places in the body and widespread pain for 3 months or greater. Not saying there's nothing wrong with people with fibromyalgia but I do it's not a real diagnosis. A lot of doctors just don't know what else to diagnose you with or automatically call it fibromyalgia when they think it's "all in your head." So while I see what he was getting at, he took a sliver of truth and expanded upon it with a lot of BS.

You’re very confident when talking about IBS when there’s no answer to it. Many times the person didn’t have IBS, yet they’re diagnosed with it due to not meeting the criteria to get tested initially for a colonoscopy. As you know it’s process of elimination for a dr to say IBS, but it’s not concrete before getting the above and is often wrong.

My father has mild IBS. I kept telling him you can have your sweet dairy stuff, just don't overeat. He then goes on to completely not eat any dairy and sweets, then after a while eats everything and tada... Here comes the diarrhea. All he had to do is just regulate his consumption. "I didn't have any for 5 days". "THAT'S NOT WHAT I TOLD YOU TO DO". Anyway, now I can just give him VIT d, problem solved. Thanks Mr Gary.

Also we know via psychology research that diet quality can be a proxy for various psychological struggles and or diagnosis. Oh, and by the way, there are papers exant that indicate the physical basis of fibromyalgia so Gary can just suck it.

Glad you mentioned depression, stress, and neuroses being a strong factor for pain and conditions like fibro and autoimmune. Dr. Gabor Mate is a pretty popular psychiatrist with some neat videos about this. Although, like Dr. Mate, I would not suggest Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, especially for trauma which most people have without remembering too. Not saying I think psychedelics or freudian psychoanalysis is better, more like an Object-Relations therpauetic approach is honestly the best form of psychotherapy. I highly recommend you look into that, since you make such great health/fitness videos but also seem to have a minor interest in the mental side of it too

I'm struggling to see how low vitamin D causes IBS and pain? Like IBS is super complicated. Mine was fixed by cutting gluten mostly and eating less fiber than I was. IBS can also be caused by SIBO which can be caused by a whole host of deficiencies, foods, additives in foods, sleep, medication, exercise, drugs [especially cigarettes], and even stress!!
This stuff is COMPLICATED! I think the number one issue with these online gurus is they oversimplify extremely complicated subjects, at the expense of people's health nonetheless!

But it is in no way a cure, unfortunately, if it was, well, that would be awesome wouldnt it? So cheap, so simple. If this were so, everyone would know it, for sure;)

FM is inflammation of the fascial sheath. This is why dealing with stress and trauma, in addition to clean health (eating, sleep, exercise) is necessary, as it is tied into the nervous system. I can't speak to CFS.
