  • Welcome back! Today we are going to maintain the steering gear of my Mercedes W201 190D. As sometimes the power assisted steering is a bit hard to operate when the car is not moving, I thought it might be a good ideas to change oil and filter of the steering gear. Already did that a couple years ago with my Mercedes W126 500SE. Of course you may do it properly on a car lift and drain the system completely. As I do not have such a lift and had no desire in breaking something by loosening those plus 30 year old connectors, I drain the system with a syringe and repeatedly flush it. Again and again. How we did that? Watch it in this video.

    Excellent English. 👍🏻🇩🇪✌️🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 Had our 08/93 190E from almost new, and I shall have this oil and the differential oil changed. So much easier to drive on narrow roads than my Mercedes E Class; Estate T Wagon.

      I totally agree. The E class is great, but the smaller size of the W201 is lovely.

    Excellent. I love to see owners take care of their cars. Keep up the service/maintenance intervals and that model is essentially indestructible. Oil & fluid changes are really important on the Diesel versions of the W201. Looking forward to more videos!

    Next time, pull the filter out with a hooked piece of wire first. Then suck out the oil. Then fill a bit over half way. Then start car and pull out some oil, refill, pull out, refill till the fluid is clean. Pull all fluid out and insert new filter. Then refill but not full. Then put the cover on. Turn steering back and forth a few times and if fluid is still clean, install filter properly. I would normally turn the steering while replacing the fluid. Then just top off and your done. That oil and filter looks like it was never serviced.

      More or less the procedure I did. Just with open cover. Went pretty well.

    On the w108 their is a nipple on the steering arm , u put a hose on it and the oil will flow through the hose , have the hose emptied out in a empty bottle , put new oil into the reservoir, in this process u will have taken out all the dirty oil and flushed the system with new

      Thank you! I will re-check, but I think on the W201 there is no such nipple and you need to unscrew the pipes. This I didn’t want to do due to the condition of the pipes.

    Thanks, Will do the same on my SL280 from 1997. Is there any particular reason you did it with open cover between the many changes? Little more work but less spillage if securing the cover between?

      @@olafsoldtimer I kind of understand....it takes many changes to get out the old oil this way, i know now:) It helps a bit to put a extension to the syringe so that you get everything out in the canister through the holes in the new filter, otherwise it will take endless amounts of changes.

    👋🏼Noticed any difference, Does it make steering easier?

    • @olafsoldtimer
      @olafsoldtimer  3 місяці тому +1

      Yes, it did. Before it was rock hard when car did not move. Now it is not superb, but a lot better. But anyway, maintenance prolonges life of the parts.

    Is it possible to do the flushing without the filter then add it at the end once the oil runs clear?

    • @olafsoldtimer
      @olafsoldtimer  2 місяці тому

      Technically, you could do that. But of course it would mean that the not fully exchanged oil will be circulating without a filter at the beginning. So I would rather not do that.

      Just buy 2 filters. One for flushing and one for using :P

    Do you know that “Oldtimer” in English refers to an old person and not an old car as in German? Just thought I let you know.

    Is there a line on that plastic thing to avoid overfilling?

    • @olafsoldtimer
      @olafsoldtimer  9 місяців тому

      If I remember correctly there are arrows on the center plastic part. You may fill to the tip of those. In other descriptions I found „20 mm under top of rim of reservoir“. I believe you don’t have to be over accurate. I filled as seen in the video and did not have any issue.
      But I will take a look now. So thank you for reminding me to check again.

    • @olafsoldtimer
      @olafsoldtimer  9 місяців тому

      Just went to check. Looks like if you go according to the arrows, you would fill the reservoir up to the rim. I would not recommend that as I would be afraid to generate some kind of pressure went hot. Better keep it to the 20 mm under the rim. As I said it worked fine for me and is still at that level.
