marblee i'd like to know more about him and his 28-yr. journey to this philosophical stage. he seems so "together" about his attitude. was he never taunted or bullied -- probably not bullied, but you never know. a movie-of-the-week (like the one on Ben Carson -- "Gifted Hands") might be appropriate about now, Mr. Schenkman. that's Richard Schenkman, director, "The Man From Earth," (2007) i think he and Foster would be a good match.
Hollis Evon Ramsey and if he was bullied or wasn't how would that have to do anything with his attitude? as well as a hollywood film? where do these things play a part in how he thinks and believes?
Dont you see anything wrong with that? That people have to admit that they DONT believe in a magic man in the sky who created the universe and only communicates with one species and controls the weather and determines football games?
I gotta disagree. This is not courageous, it's just honest. I'm glad he's expressed his views but let's not call him a hero for what so many other people have already done.
Dont you see anything wrong with that? That people have to admit that they DONT believe in a magic man in the sky who created the universe and only communicates with one species and controls the weather and determines football games?
What an intelligent young man. Really enjoyed hearing a sports star speak with dignity. I don't follow sports, but am impressed with him. I know this is an old video, but still, I enjoyed watching it.
My goodness. This made my night. You have all these religous athletes so out and proud about it to the point one comes with the other argument, they shun. It is nice to have an openly secular BLACK athlete. To understand the magnitude of this moment in secularism. Read Stephen Curry saying that "The holy ghost was in the locker room" or what Serena Williams said about not understanding people that didn't have a god in their lives. There is a guy that now counters that argument in black sports. Thank you Arian, thank you so much.
Black athletes has been the most religious among athletes this has a race component that is within our own black community. Take it from me as a black atheist we are a minority within a minority.
He has no clue how many people think the same way. Crazy thing, is that freethinkers / non believers know more about religion then supposed believers. I have to school so many people on the words that come out of their mouths.
+TSpoonER I grew up very involved in the Lutheran church. The Lutheran church is very open and accepting (at least mine was) and they really encouraged us to read the bible and think freely about it. I stopped believing somewhere around 16 or 17.. It was hard for me because I had believed in a miracle afterlife and was nervous that I'd go to hell for the decision, but I just simply couldn't believe anymore. The more I read the bible, the more I understood about religion, the further it pushed me away from believing in it. The more you know, the less likely you are to believe. Every sunday we were separated with other kids our age and did youth bible study. There were 9 kids my age, and we all went to church every sunday. We were all very religious at one point, but at his point only 2 of those 9 kids believe in God. I'm positive it was because we all were encouraged to read the bible and think about it freely. 1 of the 2 that still believe rarely went to church and mostly zoned out during discussions. Interestingly, I eventually told my pastor (long after I had stopped going) that I had lost my faith. To my surprise, she was not upset and didn't really even seem phased by it. I mentioned that the more I read and learned about the bible and religion, the less I believed and that I thought it was in part due to her encouragement of free thought about the bible. She asked me "Well, what moral lessons did you take from the bible about Jesus and his teachings?" I listed the acceptance, love everyone, give to those who need, all the Jesus stuff. Then she asked "Do you believe that is the moral way to live your life?" I said of course (because who honestly doesn't believe that). And she said "Well, if my encouraging your free thought has given you the morality of Jesus and steered you away from the ignorance that some hold about the bible, then I think that approach was successful."
Arian Foster is my new favorite pro athlete!!!! Love it!!! This is going to be a real positive step toward public acceptance...as well as giving other people the courage to be honest with their own loved ones and stop being afraid of negative repercussions because they know they're not alone, even millionaire athletes in the bible belt have their back :)
What a nice guy. Very eloquent speaker as well. Glad you're a representative of the secular community in the NFL. No pressure lol. I didn't even know I was an atheist /secular until I started learning what those words meant and I was like oh I guess I'm not that unique.
Thank you Arian Foster for making this video, it gave me the confidence to come out to my family. While they did not take it the best I finally understood the freedom that you were talking about, it was a huge weight off my shoulders not having to live a lie anymore. You are a truly brace person for making this video and helping not just me but others to have the courage to speak out and come out as secular. Thank you for everything Mr. Foster.
This is a great thing to hear. About time someone opens up and isn't a typical black religious athlete (no offense to them). Takes a lot of courage to do this.
Brave man. As a Brit, it astonishes me that an athlete in the land of the free feels it necessary to "come out" in his non-belief. Over here, around half the population is non-religious and it's pretty much a non-issue. It's also interesting that the more religious the people he encountered were, the less they were prepared to even talk about it. This suggests a sad insecurity. His parents were unusual in being religious and open minded but it's instructive that, given the opportunity to look into it without their influence, he saw through it.
what a fuss about nothing they seem to make of it over the pond :( It is like he is talking about being somebody that nobody could ever understand or condone!
Wow... I am floored by this. A "BLACK PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE" and a High Profile one at that. NFL Running Back Arian Foster of the Houston Texans, comes out as "Openly Secular".
"I used to believe there was a god...when I was a kid." Well said, Arian. That sums it all up, pretty much. Seems like people are slowing "growing out of it". A recent poll taken at Harvard found that over 1/3 of incoming freshmen identified as agnostic or athiest. It's starting to become the majority as our cultures, and our knowledge as a people, mature.
This made my day. I'm glad to see him have the courage to speak candidly about this issue. Not having to hide who you are is an amazingly feeling. I am an atheist, and seeing videos like this is what helped me accept who I am, and hopefully it does the same for others.
To all you people that's saying he's your new favorite, yall silly. He's one of my favorites NOT because his lack of belief, y'all fake!!!! I've liked him as a player based on his skill!!!
Crashburn 32 Easy, friend. I was just making a joke. I don't actually hate anyone because of their football affiliation. Except Tom Brady. I hate that guy.
Used to think this was a non issue a few years ago.. Only recently I admitted to a couple "friends and family" that I legitimately didn't believe in God.. Word spread like wildfire of my "betrayal" people avoided me for months and finally a public shaming from someone I called my Pastor for 12 years. Christianity, in my experience, is a faction and I have no regrets over anything.
Arian - for every religious fan you lose you'll gain 2 atheist and free thinking fans to replace them. Good on you for speaking your mind. I wish you'd done it during your playing days but we'll take what we can get.
13:45 I stand by that comment til the day I die. How can you possibly love another, if you can not love yourself first? Thus the value of rational selfishness. Always put self first within reason, and you will always be happy.
I totally understand if you feel that way and I love your msg of peace, and all religons coming together to explain their philosophies peacefully. Also get well soon the texans need you! This is coming from a christian and texnas fan.
I'm a former Christian and now agnostic in my worldview. This takes a lot of courage and has inspired me a lot. Not now, but one day I'll come out with my unbelief like Arian did in this video.
Congratulations on "coming out", that really takes cojones for a sports icon like yourself. Get well soon, I can't wait to see you back on the field. Peace and GO TEXANS!!!11!
First of all we as religious people need to stop saying that Just because someone is atheist they are directly going to hell and great job to him for being true to who he is
CONGRATS ARIAN FOSTER! While I think its almost hilarious that this is somehow a big deal, its nice to see courage like this that will inspire others to stop hiding their disbelief in these fairy tales without being condescending to others, well done!
It's not really a good sign that he has to "come out" as secular or non-religious in the "land of the free" in 2015. And more than that, he and others like him might face persecution or get excluded from their environment. Says a lot about the US.
I'm not a football fan but I do know that he's such a brave man. We keep having wars over our religious differences when there's something more beautiful beyond the supernatural world we cling to in this planet. :)
Come to think about it, its actually super weird that football on all levels is soo based in christianity. Its 2015 and its like the remnants of a lost civilization. Im so lucky I didn't grow up in the bible belt.
Great to see someone being so honest , there are probably thousands of similar people in public life ,too afraid to speak up . Go for it people , religion is doomed !
***** Romans 14:11 For it is written, AsI live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. Yo Erik JESUS loves you to bro!!! GRACE!!!
Romans 3:4 Not at all! Let God be true, and every human being a liar. As it is written: "So that you may be proved right when you speak and prevail when you judge."
I was always a fan of yours, now I'm an even bigger fan because you're not swayed by religion. We need more athletes who are atheists to speak up like you have good sir. Religion is for the weak minded and the frail.
Adrian, I am a 65 year-old Black man who was a theologian and seminarian but who is now an open, aggressive atheist. You are one of my new heroes! I am going to go out and buy your jersey for sure. Thanks for doing this! If you don't have enough evidence to know one way or the other about the existence of God, may I suggest you may not have spent enough time looking at the evidence that exists. Try these four books: "On The Historicity of Jesus" by Richard Carrier, "Evolution Is True" by Jerry Coyne, "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins and "Breaking The Spell" by Daniel Dennett. The factual evidence in these books should give you enough evidence to lean one way instead of another.
I normally HATE Texas teams, but it looks like I'll be rooting for the Texans only to support this progressive and intelligent player. When it comes to the realm of professional Football, this guy is very, very rare.
Nathan Smocks i do and that is my experience? do you know what my experiences are? i didnt think so. How about you close the bible and open a science book for a change chump.
+Nik Led Onou B You do know how he did his previous wife dirty, right. Sounds like you just want to give preference to him based on his non-religion which is as stupid who people who like people just because they have the same religion.
This is actually a pivotal moment in sports and religion. I dont think there has ever been a story like this in hte last decade or more. Im so happy to hear someone come out as secular even if he is the only one currently in pro sports and risks being out-casted and losing sponsorship. Keep strong Arian!
People say it takes courage to come out as an atheist? Please, that's the norm right now and is accepted, even preferred, by the ruling class. Much harder to say you believe that Jesus died for your sins. MUCH harder.
aintgonnahappen Fuck out of here with that nonsense. The majority of people in this country have some sort of belief. Christians are the second largest believers in this country after Catholics. Being black and atheist is a being a double minority.
You know Catholics are a sub form of Christianity? Christians can't be the second largest group after Catholics, because Christians include Catholics. And it is probably safe to say that Christianity is the largest religious group in the US. White people are predominantly Christian, Latino's are predominantly Christian and also between Afro-Americans is a form of Christianity highly popular.
His career was already spiraling out of control, he has been injured every season and this hasn't been the first time he's missed the entire season do to injury, he's just injury prone.
You have a clear mind. Beautiful. It might be of interest to you that Buddha was not a god. He was a man who learned and experienced many things we are still figuring out through science and through our own experience.
Nice to see an openly secular black athlete for a change.
marblee The miracle is that he is still active..... Pun intended. Lol

JJPHILLYLG pun? Because he doesn't fit into the common description of muslims?
Props to Arian for doing this...hopefully other young African-Americans can heed his message on religion.
nutsbutdum The message is not on religion
Quoting Chris Rock: "If you're a black christian, you have a real short memory"...
For him to make this video takes a lot of courage.
Dont you see anything wrong with that? That people have to admit that they DONT believe in a magic man in the sky who created the universe and only communicates with one species and controls the weather and determines football games?
+CollegeTalkTV but its much needed in a world where you have people with 14th century beliefs and modern weapons of mass destruction
+CollegeTalkTV shut uppunk
punk
I gotta disagree. This is not courageous, it's just honest. I'm glad he's expressed his views but let's not call him a hero for what so many other people have already done.
Wow it takes a lot for someone with his profile to come out like this publicly.
Dont you see anything wrong with that? That people have to admit that they DONT believe in a magic man in the sky who created the universe and only communicates with one species and controls the weather and determines football games?
i do. it doesnt take away from what hes doing. it shouldnt be a big deal.

The RB of my Houston Texans is openly secular? YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
His father must have been a wonderful man
It's good to see more people coming out! - From Australia.

Wow...
I am floored by this. A "BLACK PROFESSIONAL ATHLETE" and a High Profile one at that.
NFL Running Back Arian Foster of the Houston Texans, comes out as "Openly Secular".
He speaks very well and seems very intelligent.
"I used to believe there was a god...when I was a kid."

Ah, yes, an Ivy League college...
Go home.
Great guy ! So refreshing to see a smart athlete pro science and secular, awesome !
Lots of respect for this guy.
This made my day. I'm glad to see him have the courage to speak candidly about this issue. Not having to hide who you are is an amazingly feeling. I am an atheist, and seeing videos like this is what helped me accept who I am, and hopefully it does the same for others.
He was may favorite football player of all time before I saw this. Now I like him even more.
To all you people that's saying he's your new favorite, yall silly. He's one of my favorites NOT because his lack of belief, y'all fake!!!! I've liked him as a player based on his skill!!!
Eddie Vital Who cares why people like him? Let people like him for different reasons. It's not a competition.
Loved the clear language. I think this is going to have a really big impact. Very well done.
As a Colts fan, I hate Arian Foster. As a human being, I like Arian Foster.
So, you HATE a person because of a team he plays for? Are you serious? Maybe you're UST 12 years old...
Crashburn 32 Easy, friend. I was just making a joke. I don't actually hate anyone because of their football affiliation.
Except Tom Brady.
I hate that guy.
Crashburn 32 it's a joke
Arian seems like a great guy. I'm certain that he's inspiring others to be open about their views, and what could be healthier than that?
my favourite running back now!! Well spoken Arian
+Illuminated Revolution (Saeculum Atheus) He's always been my favorite (besides whoever is the Falcons' starting back at any particular time).
My new favorite player!!!!!!
Literally same thing is happening to me.
This was a good start to my day. Very positive and thoughtful.
Arian - for every religious fan you lose you'll gain 2 atheist and free thinking fans to replace them. Good on you for speaking your mind. I wish you'd done it during your playing days but we'll take what we can get.
Smart, articulate athlete!!
Excellent! That's some real nice honesty and bravery. Arian rocks!
"I just think that our brilliance as a society is in our science, I really do, it's a beautiful thing."
Fuck yeah, good shit Arian.
13:45 I stand by that comment til the day I die. How can you possibly love another, if you can not love yourself first? Thus the value of rational selfishness. Always put self first within reason, and you will always be happy.
Being secular and a free thinker is important to society!!!
I totally understand if you feel that way and I love your msg of peace, and all religons coming together to explain their philosophies peacefully. Also get well soon the texans need you! This is coming from a christian and texnas fan.
Arian Foster you are a star! Thank you for making your sport a little more human...
I'm openly secular in heavy Christian area. my family has been nothing but supportive.
The Bama Nerd america is so stupid, you are talking about being an atheist like you are a fucking transgender
This is amazing! It must of been so hard for him to come out.
I'm a former Christian and now agnostic in my worldview. This takes a lot of courage and has inspired me a lot. Not now, but one day I'll come out with my unbelief like Arian did in this video.
He always seems to be very open-minded, tolerant and smart person so I'm not surprised he is an atheist. Go Texans!!!
Nice job Arian!
Congratulations on "coming out", that really takes cojones for a sports icon like yourself. Get well soon, I can't wait to see you back on the field. Peace and GO TEXANS!!!11!
well spoken
Thanks for this video.
First of all we as religious people need to stop saying that Just because someone is atheist they are directly going to hell and great job to him for being true to who he is
Excellent. Intelligent move. Intellect is Ignorance's enemy.
CONGRATS ARIAN FOSTER! While I think its almost hilarious that this is somehow a big deal, its nice to see courage like this that will inspire others to stop hiding their disbelief in these fairy tales without being condescending to others, well done!
Great video, Openly Secular! Arian Foster is a badass!
I have a lot of respect for this man
beautiful guy inside and out..
what really caught me of his speech 13:00
"[...] i've done a lot of things i regret [...]
intros point im my life i'm extremely happy"
what a well spoken man
Glad to hear your words ,I wish you good will.
This is great. I love this dude.
Much respect to this man....
Thanks for doing this.
I give my respects to this man
I'll buy your jersey!
It's not really a good sign that he has to "come out" as secular or non-religious in the "land of the free" in 2015. And more than that, he and others like him might face persecution or get excluded from their environment. Says a lot about the US.
+BadReligion9 The land of the free....free to be stupid.
How brave, by brother. I'm a black atheist.
He seem genuine great views.TY Arain.
If it's about camaraderie "why can't we go on a swimming trip?!" xD xD
I'm not a football fan but I do know that he's such a brave man. We keep having wars over our religious differences when there's something more beautiful beyond the supernatural world we cling to in this planet. :)
Beautifully inspirational video, #ArianFoster. Thank you for caring enough to make it.
Come to think about it, its actually super weird that football on all levels is soo based in christianity. Its 2015 and its like the remnants of a lost civilization. Im so lucky I didn't grow up in the bible belt.
I can see why the top 1% of athletes think they're "blessed" and at least claim to be religious
+M Arian must feel hes cursed since he suffers a major season ending injury almost every year.
As a Broncos fan, I think I might have a new favorite athlete outside of Denver. Congrats to Arian for taking the initiative!
Great to see someone being so honest , there are probably thousands of similar people in public life ,too afraid to speak up . Go for it people , religion is doomed !
I like this guy.
No matter what! We still gotta pray for him!!! JESUS IS REAL BROTHA!
George White bullshit
***** Romans 14:11 For it is written, AsI live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue shall confess to God. Yo Erik JESUS loves you to bro!!! GRACE!!!
"Whoever sacrifices to any god, except the lord alone, shall be doomed." Exodus 22:19
This one is too long: Deuteronomy 13:13-19
***** Jesus Christ Died for you too!!! & no matter how you feel he still loves you be encouraged!!!!
Romans 3:4 Not at all! Let God be true, and every human being a liar. As it is written: "So that you may be proved right when you speak and prevail when you judge."
So refreshing to see a nfl player that don't think God is the reason why they score a touchdown
+Prince Charles He still does the Namaste bow after scoring.
Gratitude
I was always a fan of yours, now I'm an even bigger fan because you're not swayed by religion. We need more athletes who are atheists to speak up like you have good sir. Religion is for the weak minded and the frail.
Adrian, I am a 65 year-old Black man who was a theologian and seminarian but who is now an open, aggressive atheist. You are one of my new heroes! I am going to go out and buy your jersey for sure. buffallodavio689 I saw some speeches about Carrier, and he seems very interesting. Is he a good writer as well ?
What a nice guy.

That fact that u don't say it all lol praying for you as well
God bless,
Awesome
Ok quick question how many people were asked did they worship the devil? I was asked that and now im hearing he was asked that and im like wtf.
I wish more people of your caliber would come out secular.
Wow this is great advice for anyone raising their kids
two thumbs up
I normally HATE Texas teams, but it looks like I'll be rooting for the Texans only to support this progressive and intelligent player. When it comes to the realm of professional Football, this guy is very, very rare.
U just explained me
Nice guy...far from the thugs and ego maniacs that we normally see in pro sports.
tracy Smith funny how non-religious folks seem to be the most humble and ego-free people ive ever meet or heard
Nik Led Onou B You should get out more
Nathan Smocks i do and that is my experience? do you know what my experiences are? i didnt think so. How about you close the bible and open a science book for a change chump.

This is actually a pivotal moment in sports and religion. I dont think there has ever been a story like this in hte last decade or more. Im so happy to hear someone come out as secular even if he is the only one currently in pro sports and risks being out-casted and losing sponsorship. Keep strong Arian!
We need more like Arian Foster!
A secular and agnostic black athlete, in Houston Texas... Imagine the bigotry he puts up with.
Good luck with the rehab. In the meantime you could cohost the atheist experience over in Austin
Glad to see more of us speaking out! This isn't new if you think it is (the disbelief) read more!

don't forget about the golddiger and his destroyed marriage
His career was already spiraling out of control, he has been injured every season and this hasn't been the first time he's missed the entire season do to injury, he's just injury prone.
I always said if Tebow took Brady's job I'd believe again...aaaannnddd still not buying the Bronze Age Palestinian fairy tales
