    I think I was mentally prepared to understand evolution when it was taught to me in school because I spent most of my childhood reading about dinosaurs, how they went extinct 65 million years ago and seeing diagrams of that time period. When I later heard in History class that some Christian had calculated the origin of the earth at only 6.000 years ago, I outright started laughing.

      Lord Baktor Calculated based on a book. Not from fossils, stones or even by inventing new method of measuring half-life that will give the answer of 10,000.

      Ratta Toilete My brain is unable to derive any new information from what you said. Don't know if you are agreeing or disagreeing. Don't know if it's a recipe for a food dish. What I'm trying to say is: Please rephrase, clarify and/or explain whatever it was you were trying to convey...

    • @BaronVonQuiply

      Lord Baktor I can translate. Ratta was saying that the christians had "calculated" the age of the earth by adding up laughable ages in a book of 900 year old men rather than doing physics and mathematical calculations because those are hard and disagree with the bible.

      Baron von Quiply Ok, I get what he was trying to say now. I think he's emphasizing the least relevant part of my original post, that got me confused.

    Just wanted to thank you, Hemant, for making these videos. As a lifelong devoted Christian on track to becoming a pastor, it was when I was watching one of your videos that I finally realized and accepted that I was no longer a theist. You helped me jump over a great hurdle, and I will be full of gratitude for the rest of my life.

      +Chantell G, I no longer believe in God because I realized that all of my beliefs were stacked on top of other beliefs: assumptions based on assumptions, ad infinitum. I thought, "well, it's ok if I have assumptions, as long as they're rooted in something solid and true." This is a very fair stance, I think. So I went looking for this solid and true foundation, only to realize that there was none. My spiritual experiences? My mind playing tricks on me because of the power of suggestion and desperation. My belief in the effectiveness of prayer? Selective memory/Sharpshooter Fallacy. The inerrancy of the Bible? Tarnished. The life, teachings, and resurrection of Jesus? Read any of Bart Ehrman's books and you will realize that the massive body of evidence indicating how manufactured and inconsistent it all is is overwhelming.
      In short, the reason I no longer believe in God is because, after exposing myself to unbridled truth and evidence regarding the Bible and the belief in the supernatural, I simply was no longer convinced. I didn't choose it -- it was simply the natural result of open, objective inquiry and intellectual honesty. I was/am no longer able to subscribe to a "God of the gaps" philosophy because of how dishonest it all is.
      Since my change, I have been immensely happier and more fulfilled. I have a drive to accomplish my goals and a confidence that I have never had before. I feel more moral because I have had to discover morality for morality's sake as opposed to imposed morality out of fear of disappointing a god.
      I remember praying in tears saying, "God, I won't let me comfort be an idol in my life. I will follow the truth *wherever* it leads me, no matter what." And that's exactly what happened. And now, in a more significant way than ever before, I've truly been born again.

      OKY you have made youre choice its really sad thouh that the devil could do that but the reason youre appiere is because youre focus isint on God anymore so the devil doesnt seem to have any intrests in you because he alreydy won so why would he try to bring you down ...he won so he is leaving you alone because he doenst need to worrie because you dont believe in God anymore .....but yess you made youre choice but oneday you wil be given another choice again a second change i hope that you will make the right choice .......im not being mean or anything because i only show love to people ....im just saying what i feel ....but yehh mahn i hope you enjoy youre life ...love u all ..may Godbless

      Chantell G Belief or disbelief in God is not a choice. You are either convinced of something or you are not. I obtained deeper knowledge about the Bible and spirituality, and it left me no longer believing. If you think that belief is a choice, I encourage you to earnestly try believing that, buried underneath the foundation of your house, there is a stockpile of diamonds and rare metals. You see, there's no way you can consciously choose to believe this because you are simply not convinced. Also, your reasoning about the Devil not bothering me anymore because "he's already won" in me is just ad hoc stuff you made up. What objective analysis led you to this conclusion, and how is it that you have access to the internal thoughts and intentions of a divine being such as Satan?

      +Rey hmm so you can only make conclusions about science if you are there and can test it at that point. So history, archaeology, astronomy, geology, nuclear physics, cosmology etc are a waste of time? Or can we make conclusions from the evidence left behind. If you are philosophical about it ALL evidence is in the past. Some light takes billions of years to reach your retina some takes milliseconds, but none of it is instantaneous. Its the quality of evidence that matters not its age.

      If I was forced to have a faith, I'd choose Buddhism. He taught people the real practical things, like: "My teachings, you must examine." And that "I am not a deity, I am just a human like you, I have no power to help or hurt you. but if you do what I myself did, you should become a Buddha like me." Albert Einstein: "Buddhism is the only religion that adapt to modern science."

    Reason number 1: most people are intellectually lazy and/or incompetent. Reason number 2: the psychological and emotional need to believe (fear of death, pain and injustice/chaos). Reason number 3: indoctrination from a very young age. Reason number 4: group think or social pressure. Reason number 5: a serious failure of the educational system. Reason number 6: for many people religion is essential to their identity and relationships to others, science doesn't offer comfort and a sense of belonging. Good video.

      @lessur dgreat evolution actually has proof? Lots of it? Evolution is not just a theory, it's a fact. But every thing in science is called a theory because science is constantly evolving and growing and learning. Theories are conclusions made off of irrefutable facts.

    • @sygtymatory6667
      @sygtymatory6667 4 роки тому

      @lessur dgreat A scientific theory is a schems, that explains why the things are like they are (ALL the things that have been proven true, like dinausors for instance). If we do find little things the theory doesn't explain, or wrongly, we change it (and it has happend). Thus, we can never say that it's the truth, because we need to accept that we may have been wrong, so we use the terme believe but that doesn't mean we don't have proof that what we say is true, when we have many that what the creasionists say is false. And futhermore, humans aren't the only ones to hav feeling, and cousciousness is hard to define, so, there is still a debate about animal consciousness, but the basis of what we call consciousness have benn found in mammals and birds. And what do you mean by a fine tuned universe, a stable one? Because it isn't, it's a metastable one, its enthalpy is forever growing until no energy (which is, be defenition, chaos) can be found.

  • @SiriusMined
    @SiriusMined 11 років тому +21

    When I talk to a Creationist about evolution, I sidestep the god issue. I point out that evolution doesn't preclude a god, it just doesn't require one. I point to the many god-believers that accept evolution so that they can at least feel comfortable with the topic. At least if I can get them to stop being a science denialist, I'm happy. We can deal with the god issue after that.

    I still don't understand this argument between "god" and "evolution"... they are two completely different things... one is based on a myth and fictional character.. the other, evidence and discovery... what is all the fuss about. If you dont believe what the available data tells you and would rather believe in a silly story, that is fine. ;)

    • @Syrinx69
      @Syrinx69 10 років тому +9

      Simple! Because the people who believe in the silly story are trying to get it forced into science classrooms. And trying to get their silly outdated "morals" put into our laws. So yeah, that's what the fuss is all about but you are right, there IS no argument when it comes to evolution and creation. If there is a creator, it used evolution to diversity life on Earth over billions of years.

    • @primarysecondaryxd
      @primarysecondaryxd 10 років тому

      and vise versa. ("science" is forcing their "evidence" on religious)
      to be clear, i use quotations around evidence as not all of science is definite, small discoveries change the way we look at our universe, I mean, here we were, thinking gravity wasn't a "quantum force" and couldn't be created or manipulated except by changing mass and density, yet we were completely wrong.
      People are just stupid, both "sides".

      Simply because the "term" is not present does not mean it is not meant with what is written you small mined fucktard. You wrote them down yourself, now read them properly.
      1. means, you will have no other god and worship no other gods.
      2. means you will not mock or reproduce in any unfit manner anything involving the heavens or hell... which already, EVERY single religitard out there breaks this commandment on a daily basis.
      3. means you will not blaspheme god... and worship him without question or mockery, or suffer the consequences/
      4. remember to keep the "sabbath day" holy... in other words, remember MY day... Also another commandment witch EVERY single, if not most, break on sunday by GOING to church, working or even doing chores around the house.
      Take you head out of YOUR ass, none of these commandments benefit anyone and the well being of others, they are only put in the commndments to enforce the idea that only "this" god needs to be obeyed and worshipped.... get over yourself you small minded prick.

    Sometimes it's hard for science enthusiasts to understand that for a great majority of people, scientific details are completely unimportant, and to some possibly uninteresting.
    Sure, when they go to the doctor, they will want the doctor to know about evolution and be up on the latest medical science, but when it comes to their daily lives working at walmart, or mom and pops shop down the road, these scientific details are just not worth their time, and makes no large difference whether they accept or do not accept evolution in their view, and I can understand that.

      Jonah Schimpf I believe he meant that it doesn't matter in their everyday routine, and most people in this world are stuck in their everyday routines just to keep their head above the water. So if you add that to the reason that I believe religion has taken hold (fear of death), it kinda gives you an overall package that if you accept it blindly, you could focus on trying to feed your family while "knowing" that you will be rewarded afterwards, so it's okay if you're not happy right now.
      Of course, this is all _wishful thinking_ (coupled with stress of survival) until some evidence comes forth to support it, and I wish (oh how I wish) that everybody would be interested in finding out what's really true out there, instead of being content with just wishing how things ought to be (to solely pleasure us).
      Because if you eventually do find out what is _really_ true (and I'd argue that we're not there yet at all), then you can take actions based on reality to further change things to suit your well-being.

And how does a supernatural, omniscient being sound no more nonsense than the lack thereof? Furthermore, many religious people make nonsensical claims that we can PROVE to be incorrect. The earth is ten thousand years old? The why dose have ice cores with millions of labors, and why have we dated rocks to be older than that. Noah brought 2 of every animal on his ark and landed in Arabia? The animals would need to have migrated, so where are the fossils of the animals along the migration path? Hello Hemant and Happy Holidays to you. I am grateful and with great appreciation and respect for you, having taken the time to convey the ongoing videos you have put together, for the benefit of our societies mental and spiritual growth and well being. I feel, one of the main things we need to do, in order to survive as a species, is to evolve in our understanding of life, by realizing our connection to everything. Which means, our need to question our current religious beliefs and our global understanding of "God" or "Higher Power". With the ongoing wars between the "Abrahamic Religions"(Jewish, Christian and Muslim) over the last thousand plus years, it's time we, as a people, seriously question the integrity of our belief systems, because our stubborn ignorance and arrogance, puts all our lives and the quality of life, AT RISK! So, I thank you and ask that you continue and fine tune your venture, so that it helps our people grow in better harmony with each other and the rest of life, in all its forms.

Why am I the one assumed to have crazy beliefs when there are mounds of evidence and facts supporting evolution, yet not a shred of evidence outside the bible for things like 10 plagues of Egypt, a creation myth that includes light created before the sun was made, or a world flood that covered even the tallest mountain on Earth? Challenge yourself a little. Because it's clear that you don't understand what you're talking about. Try a little. Be brave and just try to learn something that isn't necessarily in the bible. Learn a little something other than myth. Science is all about challenging preconceived notions with rational, unbiased tests. You don't start with the bible and try to manufacture a truth that fits... that isn't science. Science doesn't start with the answers a researcher wants the way Answers in Genesis does. ***** "Positive/beneficial mutation is that it must increase COMPLEXITY, NOT be associated with any disease, not be part of normal immune responses to pathogens and/or any of the following: 1/ add new genes with new functions 2/ increase health and fitness to survive 3/ increase intelligence."
      Do you understand that that is not the actual definition of a Positive mutation, right?
      It is a straw man. They change the definition so that they can falsify their made up definition.
      They are just playing you and give you miss information.
      I will not debunk all of the miss information that those anti-sicence told you, but I will explain this one, you might stop drinking the cool-aid.
      This is an oversimplified example, but I hope it helps
      Positive mutation is any mutation that is beneficial for an individual in a certain environment.
      The increase in size of the genetic material comes from from chromosomal duplicates. This means that we have many version of very similar chromosomes, that originated from an original chromosome that was duplicated.
      The complexity per say increases when a gene is mutated because it becomes more different than the others gene that originated from the same chromosome.
      A good analogy are cuisines. When you create a new recipe most of the times you first copy a recipe that you like and over time you change it. Therefore cuisines changes over time.
      You modify your recipe by trial and error. You try different things, most of them do not work, but when one works and improves the recipe you will always use that.
      It is important to notice that yes, you loose the old recipe (assuming that you will alway cook using that alteration). And if everyone does that, the original recipe will be lost. Nevertheless, the cuisine just got more complex because the new recipes are more diverse than originally.

It both saddens me as a human being and angers me for the victims who know (and sometimes acknowledge) that they have no logical reason to continue belief in a deity or deities but refuse to leave their religion behind. I grew up and went to school in a country where there was no open debate about evolution vs creation, where religion was not part of school, and therefore I found it literally shocking to later learn that in other parts of the world, in advanced societies (like US) there are people who simply don't know (don't want to know) about the current state of science and who are debating questions which have been left behind many decades ago in other countries.
    There must be some malicious motif behind this strategy which consciously tries to push kids back into ignorance by jeopardizing the school system and pulling a foggy shroud over scientific achievements.
    I am curious: are there schools in the US where they are questioning whether the Earth is round?

    I've always thought consciousness was a result of language as much as intellect. As we learn to relate words with ideas we can begin draw much more amazing and elaborate pictures in our heads. A baby is said to most likely see the world in the form of pictures, but once you add language, and those pictures can be twisted and redrawn you can see and think so much more. Over time I always imagined that language played a rather important role in our ability to self reflect and be self aware. I can't back that up, I don't know how, but I always thought it since I was young.

    I think one other point that wasn't mentioned but does tie in with the "everyone has a soul" reason is that some people are in denial that we only have this one life & that we become nothing but rotting flesh once we die. They refuse to believe that any loved ones that they had and eventually themselves will likely have no consciousness or "peace" (in the tradition sense of the word) after death. As a former believer, I completely understand why it would be hard for some to accept that there is no heaven as truth. Especially when people are always saying things like "I'm sure he/she is in a better place" or "May he/she rest in peace" or "He/She will be looking over you or will always be with you" after the death of a loved one. I think if more people accepted logic, science & actual facts rather than what they've been taught to believe from the Bible or other religions....they would live out their one and only life more fully.

    "A wise person does not need the promise of heaven to see the benefits of being good." A quote I heard somewhere... In my opinion, the social bindings should be based on how others feel, not on what you believe. By making others feel good, you feel good. To kill someone based on color, class, gender, sexuality or whether they have a disability is wrong, because it hurts them and others. Part of that is herd instincts, passed down by genetics. We're stronger together than alone. We should all remember that. Religion tears humanity apart. Wars were waged in the name of many religions (I'm looking at you, Christians). Only an open mind and an open heart can bring us together.

    • @primarysecondaryxd
      @primarysecondaryxd 10 років тому

      to be clear i'm not "siding" here. But wars aren't caused by religious people and leaders, at least, it's not war's sole cause. From the beginning of humanity, even before we existed, even during our pre-human ancestor's time, wars have been there. Wars come with intelligent life, it's as simple as that. There is no place without war, that has a form of intelligent life (at least human intelligence). Of course, there are "good" people, but there is always at least one person who will destroy the "good" and yet, as the "good" try to defeat them, the "good" basically turn "evil" in doing so. If you think about it, when America bombed Japan, we bombed them in one of the most densely populated places in Japan, not only that, it was a nuclear bomb, effectively made by the entire population, mass genocide, and the criminal, is all of America (this is only an example). Theres also the fact that from Japans perspective, they were good, and America, Britain, etc. were all evil.

      ***** To be united, you do not need to believe the same things. You just need to agree on something. Religion grew out of our proximity to others, and the necessity to get along. We're stronger together after all. But now we live in a world where there are many, many religions, many at odds with each other, and we will run into people of these religions on a regular basis. We need to be united on a global scale, but these religions are now keeping us apart. Religion did some good. It helped up to accept the world we live in and ask the big questions, out of which science has grown. It's not completely bad (rarely anything is) but there are flaws, and it's becoming slowly irrelevant.

    This really proposes a false dichotomy between "God" and "evolution". The two are certainly not mutually exclusive. Creationism and evolution are mutually exclusive, no doubt, but classical Theism and evolution are definitely not conflicting and there are reasons beyond simplistic teleology for people to accept the God of classical Theism. (the argument from contingency, the prime mover argument, the distinction between existing things and existence itself, transcendental necessities, and many others). Also you presuppose the falsity of dualism without even offering an argument for monism. I can't say I am a dualist in the Cartesian sense, but you actually have to address the argument before using language like "sometimes it's hard to overcome" or "it may be hard to accept" because you're inserting your conclusion into your premise.

      ***** Aquinas is wrong basically because his conclusions are based on a fallacy. "Everything needs something to cause it, except this one thing I simply assume doesn't". Why doesn't a deity need a cause?
      Simply put, Aquinas assumes God doesn't need a cause, he doesn't explain why the universe, or the preuniverse doesn't, he simply excludes god for no reason. I might as well say everything needs a cause except the universe and I'll be as correct as him (I'm not in this case). The correct question is: Does the universe need a cause or not?
      So is the universe god? depends, is it concious? No.
      What I mean is, if there has to be an unmovable mover, uncreated creator, and uncaused cause; Why does it have to be deity and not the universe? We can only trace back to the universe not a deity, so adding a deity to the causal chain only adds one more link, which is only assumed to be there, therefore can be disregarded.

I was baptized, brought up Christian, and went to mass until i was about 12 and my parents kind of just forgot to go. I think that the Church has done so much to let us believe in it, how they've laid out a plan for what you should do for them your whole life. But I still cannot find any true reason as to why it makes any sense. And when I ask people about it, they just point to their personal belief or tell me to believe in God, but it makes literally no sense. Obviously this will depend on both your definitions of religion and what would constitute a 'contradiction,' but on a basic level you can see a clear (and in my opinion, causal) link, with countries containing self-proclaimed religious people having a low uptake of evolution (polarised further if limited to a strictly non-theistic evolution) contrasted with countries with wider spread atheism and the relevant affect on its education system, showing far higher acceptance of evolution.

If there is a single being that ultimately created our world (or more likely, the mechanisms which allow our world to function and grow), it is possible that this being is not connected to any religion and its nature is poorly understood. Or more simply, perhaps God is real and all religions are fairy tales. Personally I think it more likely that if the mechanisms governing evolution were created, it was a collaborative effort by many beings.

Look, the concept of gods was created so distantly long ago when humans didn't have an understanding of the world and how it works so their best guess was a god or multiple gods that had to be in charge of such a chaotic and complex and beautiful world. This theory never went away because of the religions formed around it and because it became popular belief, most likely coming from a parent making a child attend church or believe in God before that child has the ability to think for them self. This is what makes it nearly impossible to convince somebody that God or gods do not exist because they have had years of other people supporting the ridiculous claim that they see anything different as ridiculous.

    The main reason I rejected evolution for a long time was because it was basically (indirectly) teaching me I'm unlovable. While it didn't outright say I'm unlovable, it explains how certain traits are desirable over others, and sexual organisms with desirable traits were far more likely to pass on their genes, basically saying there are specific traits people are attracted to. I have 0 of those traits. I'm short, I'm weak, I'm mentally ill, I'm unintelligent, I'm socially inept, I have a very small penis, I have a receding chin, etc. the only positive trait I have is my extremely high pain tolerance, but even then, it's far more useful for party tricks than finding a potential mate. Evolution also seems to imply that our sole purpose is to reproduce, and since no one can love me, because loving me would go against natural selection, I will never pass on my genes. Basically, evolution made me feel completely useless. I admit, it's better than Christianity that made me believe I was an evil person who deserved eternal suffering no matter what I did. It's better to feel useless than someone who deserves to suffer solely because they were born.
    I believe in evolution, and I sincerely believe I'm useless. Not just useless in the Atheistic sense where everyone is useless. In 100 years, the vast majority of us will not matter. No one will know who we are, and any legacy we left on the Earth won't matter. I mean i don't even make a difference. I can't work, I'm unlovable, I don't have very many friends, I have nothing to give.
    Before you all give me a list of people with my traits that were able to find love and have children, without seeing the list, I can name something else that all have in common. They are all very financially successful. If you have enough money, it can override all your negative traits. Why do you think Donald Trump has children?

    Why is atheism given loop holes, but the same isn't given to creationism. Does atheism or evolution have an consensus on the Origin of Life or even the Origin of All things. They claim that evolution is true but takes billions of years. That seems like an easy hand to play because you have NO way to observe that or to repeat it to say if that's true.

    • @bebopjelli2
      @bebopjelli2 10 років тому

      evolution takes more time the more complex the organism, and so smaller organisms, like bacteria, can be observed evolving and adapting. chemists to my knowledge see this often with bacteria they grow for proteins that eventually become resistant or even immune to methods of killing it off when it loses its use.

      bebopjelli2 I can understand that with bacteria. But speaking only on humans, we cannot observe evolution due to the "long process" To say we can do it because another species can does seem valid to me. Josh Haws There are NO fossils and there are NO DNA records that directly relate us to primates. We have similar attributes but there is no direct correlation between them and us. Evolution is a thought process that tries tying it in all together. Without the links validating a DIRECT relation to primates, its just another worldview and not that final answer that atheist seem to often portray. Even IF that were the case, Evolution and/or Atheist still have no explanation of the origin of matter, life, or even time. Creationist at least have that rational to believe that something greater than what we see had created the things we see. Why? Because we observe that same process of creation here on earth. Babies come from parents, plants from seeds, etc. To say emphatically that NOTHING created this universe which is set on a self sustaining yet temperate operating system is not rational and that is the essence of the insanity of atheism. Most atheist claim an intellectual high ground in regards to Science but somehow throw the rules of of the window when it comes to the origin of all things. Someone with a rational state of mind would be agnostic at best. We say a higher being created the universe (God) because we see how reproduction of matter works here on earth. Atheist say that nothing created something but where did they observe that in nature?

      Philosophically that is true. In reality the word cousin refers to someone with the same grandparents. We stretch that sometimes to include 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th cousins. Beyond that is really a stretch, but it is done.
      Animals and plants split billions of years ago. Who can say why some microbes preferred sunlight and others learned to "eat".
      Cacti are an excellent example of evolution. They were plants growing in a sea and the sea starts drying up. Those plants that could evolve to make use of dry land survived. Lots of deserts have cacti, but the plants are different from one another. They probably evolved from the same type of plant that was able to survive their environment drying up.
      Some deserts, while obviously being old sea beds, did not produce cacti. No plant resembling a cactus developed in those areas.

      So it is also not a surprise to find similarities of adaption when you create cities or countries in the games based on real life cities to find animals (or there pokemon) based on selected animals in the first place, which are living in the same regions. ;-)

      kev mc You CAN see evolution. Over 10,000 years, humans specifically bred dogs for specific characteristics. This is one of the Evolutionary Mechanisms; Artificial Selection. This led to many breeds of dogs. Also, evolution has been observed in the laboratory. Many bacteria were put in a petri dish and allowed to divide in conditions that would eventually kill them (Can't quite remember what else they put in there). However, one of the bacteria experienced a genetic anomaly while dividing, and produced a bacteria that would live longer and divide more times in the conditions of the petri dish. While the ones without the anomaly eventually all died due to not being able to divide rapidly enough, the genetically anomalous ones survived, and so did their decedents, and so on. So yeah, we've seen Evolution in action. Also, if you mention microevolution and macroevolution, neither of those are scientific terms. They're colloquial terms, and even if they were scientific, it wouldn't matter, because they'd be synonymous.

      Evoloution is fact. Just because either it is not a palatable reality, or you simply cannot wrap your primitive thinking head around it, doesn't change anything. Humanity has come a long way since we began to come down from the trees. You are going to jettison all the accumulated knowledge and research and advances of modern man, and listen to a priest in a multi-colored dress, who represents a bygone era, then you are binning logical thought and reason, in favour of ancient mythology. Viking102938 How can atheists support their own form of theism? Do you even know what the word 'theist' means?
      Atheists are skeptical. They're skeptical of any god claims as no evidence has been presented. I'm also skeptical of astrology, near death experiences, the existence of the soul among many other things.
      Now, do you have a coherent argument to present, or just ignorant statements about atheists?

    • @Viking102938
      @Viking102938 10 років тому

      Arthur Fuksayk , if you can't continue this discussion calmly, then I won't be part of it.
      *Thesis:* "A statement or theory that is put forward as a premise to be maintained or proved."
      It does not mean belief in a deity (I'm quite confused as to how people have gathered that).
      *Atheist:* "Atheism is, in a broad sense, the rejection of belief in the existence of deities. In a narrower sense, atheism is specifically the position that there are no deities."
      This is opposed to Agnostic.
      *Agnostic:* "Agnosticism is the view that the truth values of certain claims-especially claims about the existence or non-existence of any deity, as well as other religious and metaphysical claims-are unknown or unknowable."
      As opposed to Skeptic.
      *Skepticism:* "An ancient or modern philosopher who denies the possibility of knowledge, or even rational belief, in some sphere."
      In summary, Atheism; belief in proof that there is no deity. Agnostic; belief that cannot be proved (it could be said Agnostic and Skeptic are almost synonymous). Skepticism; we can't prove religion (or anything else for that matter).
      If you're skeptical, that has nothing to do with being an Atheist. Atheism in of itself relies on evidence and a firm amount of faith (theism), whereas skepticism says "f*ck it all, I could be wrong about everything".

      Wrong, atheism is not faith-based.
      Theism: belief in a god or gods
      Atheism: Lack of belief in a god or gods
      The 'A' is the important part.

If your atheist, why do you spend time making videos, books, debating on a topic that seems to be categorized with the rest of the fairy tale creatures? I don't believe in leprechauns; does that mean I now have to make a blog about how illogical this idea is? The answer is no. why? 1. it would be a waste of my time and 2. The same thing can be said about Christians and stm cell research or the Pro Life/Pro Choice debate.
      What if those "leprechaunists" would push for all schools to teach the lore of leprechauns as fact, that the isle of Ireland was erected by Fae and children - your children included - wouldn't get a passing grade until they believed it? "Teach the controversy" is essentially that.

      Schools have taught creation as fact for centuries - before they knew better. Nowadays, we have a scientific understanding that the Bible is simply not factual. Not in many of its parts and certainly not in its entirety.
      Evolution is as much fact as a spherical Earth or the Earth orbiting the Sun. Teaching creationism/ID as a scientific alternative is simply factually wrong.
      Unfortunately, nowadays a child can be homeschooled and go to a Christian college and never learn about these things. And those people get important jobs in society.
      Would you want a doctor who tries to cure epilepsy with an exorcism? Or a councilor who tells their patient that they are morally deplorable and rightfully depressed just because they love a person of the same gender? Or a factory owner who'll pollute nature because "we're livin' the End Days anyway and God will rapture us any day now"?
      For some of them, Hemant, Dawkins, Dillahunty and Sagan are the first glimpse that there is "another truth", one that does not dictate answers but rather encourages you to seek your own.
      They don't get paid by God, but rather by the parents who have - knowingly or not - misled their kids.

      If a bat has worse eyes than another it doesn't matter (as it would with eye-dependent creatures) since it's no evolutionary trait for them anymore, so even bats with worse eyes can reproduce without problems and pass on their bad-eyes-Genes to the next generation.
      After many generations they probably won't have eyes at all.
      In contrary: a Bat with worse sonar can't (for example) hunt as good as the others => less food => gets weaker => mating partners will regret it more often than the others with better Sonar (even if they find another bat to mate they won't be able to feed their offspring as well as the others) => Bad-Sonar-Genes won't be passed on to the next generation as much as Good-Sonar-Genes.
      If they were designed: why do they have eyes anyway since they don't use them? Bad design.

    ok. On point # 1. Here's what so hilarious. Atheists for many decades had been violating science by teaching that man came from the chimp and throwing this in classrooms shouting "science!!!" all the way. The until very recently they came to the understanding that we don't come from chimps, rather we have a common ancestor, and started scrambling to recall all those science books with the man-chimp drawings. The new "it" phrase in the science community became... "common ancestor". They atheist couldn't be any prouder of their discovery. But unfortunately for them... the Bible has been stating a "common ancestor" for all living things for the past 4,000 years!!!! 0:59 It's not evolution that teaches were all interconnected, it's the Bible! Where did man come from? The earth (Gen.2:7). The animals? The earth (Gen.1:24). So i'm really glad the guy in the video discovered that man and trees are related @ 1:17, even if he's 4,000 years late.

      @sebb: you quote genesis and claim that it has evidence of evolution. I find it interesting that you take only specific points from genesis, in order to attempt to prove that genesis teaches evolution. Maybe you should also have read up to Genesis 1:31 where it says "And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day." which points out that this 'evolutionary' process only took six days to *create* every living thing. If evolution is written in the bible, then it states it is a very fast process, which (based upon empirical evidence) is actually a very slow process, taking millions of years. But this is not mentioned in the bible.
      Additionally, you quote Gen 2:7 which states that "God formed man from the dust of the ground". Again, if the bible was accurate in teaching evolution, it would NOT have said man came from the dust, but came from a 'common ancestor' between apes and humans. Note that the bible also states that man was also created within the six days of creation.
      To conclude: Your attempts at claiming that the bible explains evolution, by picking out specific quotes and ignoring others, is misrepresenting what the bible says, and is downright deceitful. But then again, that is what religion is all about!

    It's "hard to explain to people how our minds evolved" because there is currently no materialistic explanation for the existence of conscious experience. Our friend in this video has present a typical materialism-of-the-gaps argument, or an argument from ignorance. The atheist voice doesn't represent science, he represents atheist propaganda.

    • @thomasperry5061
      @thomasperry5061 11 років тому +1

      Well i'm going to have to stop you right there, because there is an explanation for how our minds evolved, it's just difficult to explain. I'll try my best tho. So the brain serves as the central command system for the body, ours is much more complex than most animals. Ours doubles as a sort of virtual reality prediction divide, there is no better way to say it. It gives us the distinct advantage to learn and figure out how the world around us works and therefore we can predict certain outcomes. This is an invaluable asset. Our conscience is just us going from our memories, to our relationships, to our predictions for the future, in our brains. Hope that explains everything.

    • @Patrick65879
      @Patrick65879 11 років тому +2

      Thomas Perry You explanation misses the essence of the "hard problem" (one of the technical names for it): what is it that *experiences* the predictions, memories, relationships and other information that is collected by the senses?
      My camera takes very high-quality pictures and can store them in it's memory. But can my camera see these pictures? Can it experience a beautiful picture the way a human being can? Can my camera think "that last shot was so beautiful!" Obviously not. Why not?

    • @thomasperry5061
      @thomasperry5061 11 років тому +1

      Because your personal taste is unique to you, due to your experiences and upbringing. There is no use to comparing a human to a camera. They are not made to observe the attractiveness of a picture. They cannot understand beauty because they are not sentient, they don't really understand anything, they store photos.
      Now to answer your question, YOU. YOU experience things in your own head, think of it like a desktop of a computer. What is the point of having a massive brain if there is no way to navigate your thoughts? Consciousness itself is not really a "physical thing" It is not some blob of nerve pulses or one specific part of the brain. Your memories, predictions, relationships and everything else are YOU, they are unique to you.

    • @Patrick65879
      @Patrick65879 11 років тому +1

      Thomas Perry Yes, and it's that *you* that materialism can't explain. What does it mean to be a sentient being? That's the whole question that your explanation avoids. Your computer can store zillions of files, but isn't conscious of any of it. Not to speak of my personal taste, acquired from my upbringing or whatever, machines have no taste at all. Machines have massive "brains" but without the input of a sentient user will never navigate it's own thoughts.

    • @thomasperry5061
      @thomasperry5061 11 років тому

      What does the limitations of AI have to do with consciousness? They were not designed to be conscious, they were made to store photos and docs, not opinions. I don't get what point your making?
      You do know that your question was addressed with an entire book. www.amazon.com/Consciousness-Explained-Daniel-C-Dennett/dp/0316180661
      Good stuff.
      A consciousness is a state of being aware, all living things are conscious. It allows us to process the information that we see in our day to day lives. And a "Sentient Being" is something that can feel or perceive, courtesy of a dictionary.

    Belief in Creationism requires faith in the following unobserved process:
    1. Presuppostion that a Non-Naturalistic process for life coming from non-life exists & already occurred.
    Belief in Evolution requires faith in the following unobserved processes:
    1. Information being added to the genome
    2. Increasing genetic complexity
    3. The primary definition of Macro-evolution
    4. Evolution Theory also relies on the presupposition that a Naturalistic process by which life comes from non-life exists and already occurred, despite no observations of this either.
    All existing scientific evidence could be interpreted to support either side:
    1. A common designer, or
    2. A common ancestor
    So what scientific or logical reason does anyone have to choose Evolution over Creationism? It requires faith in more processes which haven't been scientifically verified / observed.
    Occam's razor is the problem-solving principle that "entities should not be multiplied beyond necessity". It is generally understood in the sense that with competing theories or explanations, the simpler one, for example a model with fewer parameters, is to be preferred.
    So why are many choosing the explanation which requires faith in more unobserved processes when it isn't necessary? That's not the scientific or logical approach.
    The answer is: Scientism
    They're believing that whatever claims are within the current consensus of academia are automatically scientific claims. It doesn't work that way. The Methodological Naturalism requirement allows them to include their best Naturalistic explanation for questions they can't answer with observation.
    “Even if all the data point to an intelligent designer (or Creationism), such a hypothesis is excluded from peer-review because it is not naturalistic. Of course the scientist, as an individual, is free to embrace a reality that transcends naturalism."
    - Dr. Scott Todd, immunologist from Kansas State University as printed in Nature Magazine
    So, in effect, Scientism is causing them to blindly believe mainstream academia's consensus like a religious text without properly understanding the only reason Creationism is excluded is due to pre-existing philosophical bias, NOT because it's less scientific.
    Pre-existing bias is a systematic error in the scientific method. They can't even prove Naturalism is a true philosophy.

    God didn't make us.
    Our parents in the bed room did.

    The bible did not say we were just puffed in existence like magic from a wand. It took 6 days for God to create earth and on the seven day he rested. The earth was created first before human life ever existed. I thought you knew the bible more than a true believer does? Since you had read the book from beginning to the very end.

      You make much, much more sense than the moron and Atheist on the video. You are very knowledgeable on the theories of our planet. You keep your mind sharp by doing a lot of reading on such subjects. You just don't go by something someone had told you and quote them on it, so that is good.

      You expect me to believe that all the shit in the world was built off of what some creator made in SEVEN FUCKING DAYS!?

      I don't know what you believe, I am no mind reader. You can believe what you want. I am not forcing you to believe me. You are grown after all.

      Ohhh creationist people, look at the evidence, the Earth is proven to be 4.5 billion yeas-old and animals (including people) were not magically created by god, get over it, it's just getting old now.

      No one really knows how old the earth really is and Scientist are just peculating its age and existence. I really think you don't really care what I think, you just want to argue with me constantly. You think I am an idiot, because I really can't prove all the things I am saying, but neither can you. I am not that old, and can not tell you how the earth got started, because that would make me the very first human on earth if was and I would know all those things, but I don't.

    On a side note about not understanding vast time scales, when I heard that the pyramids were already ancient by the time Cleopatra was born, it blew my mind. Always imagined those being very close in history.
    According to my tiny human perspective, they are not close in time at all. But to the Earth, it’s all one blip on the timeline. Still blows my mind, actually. Haha!
