My college English professor played the Shakuhachi and introduced me to it. I never could get the lip position right to produce a good tone on it, but now I see there is another practice with it that I might be more successful with. :)
I love seeing ordinary items being used as weapons and the bamboo is a tough versatile material (one reason that it is used for fighting sticks in Filipino Martial Arts). Awesome new intro too. :)
Seki Sensei reminds me of my japanese language teacher from university. He was a master of the naginata and sadly I've never been able to see his skills with it hah A suggestion for future videos: I know for better visibility and aesthetic you film the katas in a slow and clean way; Yet I would enjoy if you were able to add a 1 minute section to the videos where there is no given seme/uke status but rather a test-fight to actually see how practical the kata would be in a situation where you are unsure how the opponent acts. Really fastricnating to see your videos with seki sensei non the less, but that would be the icing on the cake for me ^^
I LOVE LOVE LOVE the new introduction. Seki Sensei and his favorite musicians! It’s awesome! And, of course, the kobudo is excellent as always! Arigato gozaimashta❣️🙏🏾
And I found it interesting that the standard 1.8 shakuhachi was the length of a wakizashi. There is also an interesting observation that Wah Lum Kung-fu has a series of 'fatal flute' techniques - that flute is about the length of a shakuhachi. Also recall that the shakuhachi originated in China from which Japan absorbed so much of their culture.
Love the new intro 👍Flute is on our list already 😊 Asked Kate to get me the hat for my birthday 😮 Nice to see Josh and Michael at the end 😊 Brilliant 👍 Thank you so much 🙏👍 Take care. Stay safe 🙏 John and Kate
@warrikata Well done today mate 👍 Looking forward to seeing it on a big screen 👍 We practiced yesterday and both nailed it 3 times in a row 😊 Then today we both lost the plot, but we enjoyed taking part and thats what it's all about. We are here for the long haul so God willing we have loads of time! 🙏👍Hope Kurosawa Sensei gets better it might be stressful for Master Seki, he looked tired. Kate and I said if anything we hope we gave them a laugh and cheered them up!😊 Take care. Stay safe 🙏 John and Kate
@@KateJohn2013England he smiled very widely while you both were performing, I saw that much I did see! And thank you for the compliment! I'm all about getting rid of the performance shakes.
Would love to see Seki Sensei get his hands on a montante/spadone. Really curious what he thinks about the more momentum based fighting style of big European swords. The longsword video was really cool!
Oh man, this is fantastic. I've been slack in my shakuhachi training for a while, but trying to work it back into my routine. An extra bit of inspiration! Thank you Shogo-senpai and Seki-sensei! I loved the old intro with Age-Gesa, and the new one looks excellent as well! ✌️✌️
That was very impressive. Master turned a musical instrument into a deadly weapon so quickly. Even if this instrument was designed as a secret weapon, it is still impressive.
Great Video, i´m a Shakuachi player from Portugal and former Karate practioner and this video besides showing a few techics also comes out with some history enlighment about the monks and why the Shakuachi as it´s end form. Thank You Very Very much
If I remember, we notice horizontal lines more than vertical. So even with the same slit width and total visible area, the basket with horizontal slits would interfere more with vision than if the lines were vertical (as in the video). You can simulate this with pens or your fingers. Put a finger in front of your eyes either pointing upwards or together horizontally at each other, you would notice that fingers pointing upwards obscures your vision less. I don't remember the exact reason why, I assume it's due to having two eyes, so what's blocked from one eye is visible in the other. If the line is horizontal, it prevents this effect I think.
I absolutely love what samurai might have to learn to fight with and the potential restrictions in combat. Possibly using the least to have the maximum affect if needed in combat.❤
The new intro... Very reminiscent of Wagaki Band, of whom I am a huge fan, although speaking of fans, i do believe it would be quite interesting to hear Seki-Sensei's opinions as far as folding hand fans as weapons. Edit: if i had watched a little further i would see he already has! Time to seek out the tessen video!
Wow, another example of “anything can be a weapon”! The technique where Seki sensei put the flute through his opponent’s arm is very similar to an aikido technique using the forearm. I am constantly surprised at how much Japanese martial arts borrow from each other.
Fantastic video ❤ I always found the videos of Seki Sensei very informative especially with the use of ordinary objects such as a fan and a flute as a weapon for self defense. Amazing. ✨️✨️✨️👏
oh i know that Flute can be a weapon the game Samurai Warriors has those monks (known in the English localization as Wind Ninjas, probably to hide the fact you re fighting a Holy Man) who use those Flutes as their primary weapon, and are the hardest hitting Mook characters apart from the Sumo.
Um no, I didn't. But Seki sensai probably could turn a Q tip into the most deadly weapon. Kinda like John Wick does with a pencil. OH! Seki Sensei is the Japanese John Wick! Yes! Now it all makes sense!
cool like the Irish Shillelagh where they outlawed carrying weapons so they carried walking sticks made of blackthorn filled with molten lead and seasoned in the chimney to strengthen the wood, it would be kind of cool to see Seki Sensei review some Shillelagh videos and try one out Glenn Doyle has some good videos although he stopped teaching his families 2 handed technique but his videos are still up
its more or less the kinds of techniques used any blunt weapon which lacks a defined head like a mace. so think of Clubs, Kali Sticks, Night Sticks, and Shillelaghs as a point of comparison. people under-estimate the sort of damage you can do even with a simple sturdy stick but historically, even soldiers on the field of battle would use a big stick with an couple iron bands to hold it together when faced with armor. (the only 2 ways to defeat good armor are to hit with enough force to break bones through the armor or enough precision to stab at the gaps in the armor)
Using this specific flute as weapon doesn't surprise me one bit, aside from being known with the concept including the basket on the head thing. The flute is a strong piece of bamboo and a very unexpecting weapon. Technically you could even turn a spoon into a weapon, which some martial arts masters could perform even against swords. I however doubt the IRL combat in a warzone obviously, it might be a nice one vs drunk opponents.
i have no idea why, but i knew it was a weapon before i knew it was a flute edit: also as my old pe teacher once told me "blunt force is better than a blade, because with blunt force you can make the pain accumulate over time, and that will slow your opponent, and make it harder for them to focus"
Imagine arriving at the Pearly Gates and having to explain to people that you were killed by α guy wearing α basket on his head with α woodwind instrument.
As a stick fighter, I was thrilled to watch Seki-sensei show the versatility of the shakuhachi. I learned once again the importance of timing vs. speed when using a short stick to defend yourself.
The style of Ju Jutsu I practised many years ago before I fell ill used a Te bo a baton as long as your arm from the elbow to the outstretched finger tip and octagonal in shape. The shape allowed it to bite into a lock or strangle/choke and they were often called "ouch sticks" by students! We even had hollow batons that doubled as a blowpipe. The joint locks etc remind me of it, the strikes were applied by flicking the tip out using the wrist. Thank you for reminding me of some very happy and painful memories!
The warrior in me is thinking "what versatility!" The musician in me is dying inside watching a shakuhachi get beaten up... (took me a long time to find one)
I like the transfer of skills from one weapon to another. In this case, the tessen and wakizashi I also appreciate that using a shorter weapon means you should focus on luring and countering rather than pressing forward due to reach disadvantage
I see Sensei is using a Yuu flute - I have one too; it's good for travel. Note that in the Edo period, a shakuhachi was made from a single piece of madake; modern ones are in two-pieces for ease of transport. There were legitimate Fuke-shu monks. Joining was an option for ronin, but a samurai could 'retire' (a rare privilege), and become a komuso. Monks were able to cross the various han borders without 'visas' - wearing the tengai gave monks anonymity in their travels. Some were recruited by the Shogunate as spies, and they gathered intelligence as they traveled playing for alms, especially in the red-light districts where inebriated samurai could let slip sensitive information to impress their female companions. The Fuke-shu was abolished after the Meiji Restorations for having been spies for the Bakufu. Intense lobbying to the government by major shakuhachi sensei resulted in shakuhachi playing continuing in a secular environment, which is where we are today.
jst spotted one of your vids with Seki sensei san blowing one of these flutes and getting a few notes out of it!!!! a notoriously difficult thing to play!!! - I like the intro now with Yuko san's Hanafugetsu group - they are amazing and of course Hanafugetsu's members are in Wagakki band too together with the drummer, wadaiko, guitar, base and shamisen players. Hi! I’m a huge fan and I’ve been trying to train with a katana and I have a question, I see in different paintings and movies the sheath is pointing up, or sometimes down.. I saw that it varied in different times.. what is the correct way?
So, how do you say, basket+shogo, in Japanese? On a serious note though, I have several penny whistles, and they could be used offensively because of their material and tapering shape. Not to the extent of catching weapon attacks though. Also, after you have beaten your opponent, you can play a dirge over their defeat
I know what kind of trauma a recorder can inflict...I am not surprised this flute is just a lethal.
My college English professor played the Shakuhachi and introduced me to it. I never could get the lip position right to produce a good tone on it, but now I see there is another practice with it that I might be more successful with. :)
You can tell Seki sensei is a master by the ease that he adjusts to various weapons
You can tell Seki Sensei is a master, when he turned a non-lethal object lethal.
He has definitely earned that title. I only found this channel yesterday, but already I have great respect for this man.
I would love to see Seki Sensei's take on "Ashina Style" from Sekiro! Especially the techniques "Ichimonji" and "Ashina Cross"
I second this
I love seeing ordinary items being used as weapons and the bamboo is a tough versatile material (one reason that it is used for fighting sticks in Filipino Martial Arts). Awesome new intro too. :)
Cool
absolutely right but having practiced Kali for several years, what was actually used was not exactly Bamboo but Rattan (or hardwood of course)

Please look up the difference between ‘facial’ and ‘faecal’ before using those words in a professional setting 😆

That looks super cool actually!
You just hear a flute playing nd then once you see it it stops playing and slowly approaches you ready to kill you.
I've enjoy the details of the defense, very fluid!
Love it--that was great. I'll have to re-evaluate how I look at my Shakuhachi now!

I can’t believe you got 3 members of Wagakki to do the intro for you…
As an advice you can put the camera inside the basket next time and pivot it to show what you are likely to see from inside.
Your vision while you are wearing the tengai would be similar to a European full helmet.
