I love the old Thomas and Friends because the connection that it had with real life gave it realism and emotion unlike the new ones. I enjoyed that part of my childhood and would sit down and watch them again any day.
It's really cool how the characters have an accent that would fit if Sodor existed, which is also my own accent. Big realism, and great representation. The fact there even is a US narration fucks me up. Why can't you just deal with our accent? We can't avoid yours.
This was one of my all time favorite episodes growing up. Donald and Douglas are two of my most favorite characters and George Carlin was dead on with the voices. He nailed those Scottish accents spot on.
A couple more fun facts about Donald & Douglas: 1. The Rev. W. Awdry's numbers for them, 57646 and (presumably) 57647, are fictional but are in line with their real life basis, the ex-Caledonian Railway 812 Class. The highest number given to a real 812 by British Railways was 57645, so Donald & Douglas would have been the next youngest members of the class had they been built. 2. The numbering is also pertinent as the 812 Class, first built in 1899, were being withdrawn from service and sent for scrap when Donald & Douglas' debut book, "The Twin Engines", was published in 1960; the last 812 would be withdrawn in 1963. This explains their paranoia of being sent back to the "Other Railway" (read: BR) to likely meet the fate of their kin. 3. The Caley 812's, nicknamed "Jumbos" for their relatively large size by 0-6-0 standards, were extremely successful mixed traffic engines. Although built primarily for freight traffic, their relatively high top speed of 55-65 mph regularly saw them on passenger trains such as the boat trains that met the ferries from Ireland at Stranraer. Not exactly surprising since they had the same boiler type as the larger "Dunalastair" Class 4-4-0 express passenger locomotives. 4. As part of an agreement between the Caledonian Railway and its Chief Mechanical Engineer John McIntosh and the Belgian State Railways (SNCB/NMBS, depending on if you're speaking French or Dutch), some 891 copies of the 812 Class were built in or for service in Belgium, becoming the Type 30 and Type 32 locomotives. Initially they were only used for freight, but after 1909 they also saw use on local commuter trains and sometimes to help expresses on hilly sections. During the First World War, a few of the Caledonian's smaller 294 Class (also nicknamed "Jumbo") were sent to France to aid the war effort and often rubbed buffers with the Belgian copies of their Scottish brethren. No doubt, had they personalities as they do in Thomas, they would have been very confused. Most were retired between 1947 and 1959, with most being scrapped though some saw use as stationary boilers. 2 examples survive today in museums with a third having been saved as a source of spare parts before finally being cut up for scrap in 2002. 5. Only one 812 Class survives today: Number 828, restored to operation in the summer of 2020 at the Strathspey Railway in Scotland. She was built in 1899, the last of the first batch of locomotives of this class.
A childhood favorite!!! You took the words right from my comment!!!! One thing even to this day, I find very admirable about this episode is the detail done to the signal box and brake van crash scenes. The dirt and bruised and black eye on the faces were very impressive to me as a kid and I still like to look at it!!!! And some people will say this is a dark episode and the older fans don't deny it!
A Close Shave: A runaway freight train collides into an idle passenger train in a station at Hull. Thomas Comes To Breakfast: Member of staff accidentally lets an engine loose into buffers, taking out half a stationmaster's house in Peterborough.
How about that episode where a Double-decker bus got stuck under a bridge? I had saw a picture of a modern version where a Double-Decker Bus got stuck under a bridge but it's too recent to be a coincidence or an inspiration. If not, what about a funny railway incident which inspired the episode where James's crewmen had to borrow the infamous bootlaces just to patch up the brake pipe?
I am SO glad that this video popped up in my feed. I used to look up TRLOTTTE a lot but hadn't in years and forgot the website name, so I couldn't find it again. You're very useful in that regard! :D
The main accident could be a reference to banking engines. Locomotives like Big Bertha were designed specifically for this purpose, and performed their duties well. But more often than not, much more powerful engines would be used, and this could cause the rearmost trucks or the break van to break under the pressure. It was more common here in America, but it did happen in the UK as well.
Great video. Though, as a railway man myself, I feel like I should clarify something: in all of your episodes, you say that someone should have been fired for what happened. That's not how it works. You don't loose your job on the railway, only because you made a mistake. Especially not when no one was hurt. Minor accidents like crashing into a signalbox, or loosing control over your train are things that can happen, and back in those days, they bothered even less about them that these days! Be asured that, in most cases, no one got fired.
On the topic of the Spiteful Brakevan not having an inspiration, the closest I know of is the story of the NZR G class, as built as Garratt locomotives. While they wouldn't actually completely destroy a wagon, they were too powerful for their own good, and often ripped the drawbars off wagons!
From reading the real story database which I have, it confirms there was an incident where an over-enthusiastic banking engine crushed a brake van, but where and when it occurred is yet to be identified.
Nice! This is only in the railway book series, but how about "Bad Look Out" Godred fell off the mountain, which is based on LADAS falling on the snowdon mountain railway in April 1896.
Oh yeah, so 1965 conductor dropped ‘Cid and thought he could transport in between a train station and a magical island just cause he was riding a train back-and-forth And he saw a digging type diesel and was horrified and hallucinated it to be trying to attack him
There is subtext to why both Scottish twins came to Sodor. If Douglas didn’t go to Sodor with Donald, he would have been scrapped. While Rev W Audrey was writing the book that introduced the Scottish twins to the Railway Series, steam engines were being sold for scrap all over the UK.

You know something? Awdry has done some unrealistic things with Thomas before. Thomas is an E2 painted blue (green in TAB), but in real life, none of the E2s are painted blue or green, just brown or black all over. Unlike most E2s since they are rubbi- I mean... incapable of pulling coaches, Thomas is one of the rare E2s out there that is capable of shunting and pulling cars and coaches, proving everyone that Thomas was an experimental engine this entire time.
Could you cover the basis for Bad Look Out? The damage to the engine makes what happened to Gordon in A Better View For Gordon look like a light bump on the buffers.
I want to see a video which talks about the inspiration behind Peter Sam's accident with the slate trucks in 'Trucks'. LOL since I'm Aussie I'm essentially a time lord
I believe the Brake Van getting broken into pieces was probably inspired by the 1964 Burt Lancaster film, "The Train", which involves a scene similar to Douglas crushing the spiteful Brake Van.

There is a theory speculating that the spiteful brakeman was rebuilt into a truck seeing as how this episode takes place after Donald and Douglas.
Donald and Douglas are two of my favorite engines just because of their design alone. Carlin's portrayal seals the deal.
