I honestly love Henry's line of, "Hello, Fat Face!" It just comes out of nowhere, with absolutely no build-up. There was literally no reason for him to say that. He just wanted to troll Gordon. One of my favorite comedic moments in the show. Yes, my sense of humor has degenerated to this.
My little sister loves that line so much!!! I think it's a shame that it only was used in Ringo Starr's narration. I think it would have been much funnier in George Carlin's narration.
@@lukechristmas3951 That line most likely wasn't in the US version because Americans don't like the word "fat", since it describes themselves. Same reason why The Fat Controller is referred to as Sir Topham Hatt.
One of the greatest things about classic Thomas is it is one of those things you can watch and enjoy without even knowing or caring what the plot is or caring that the engines are sentient. A lot of the exciting moments in the classic series would still be enjoyable with regular vehicles that aren't alive. For example watching a runaway freight train swerve into a siding and crash into a barber shop would still work really well with music and with vehicles that had no faces on them.
An interesting trend I noticed when flicking through the books and episodes based on the books is that most Gordon-centric stories, early on at least, followed the same Formula: Another character does a thing. Gordon berates said character for doing that thing, remarking how it is improper, wrong, shameful, etc. Gordon then has that thing happen to him. Gordon is mortified and sometimes made fun of by others for being hoist by his own petard.
Not so much based on a single event but rather based on multiple events. In the old days of steam, freight wagons were usually unbraked on trains and the momentum made it difficult to stop the train and it took both the engine and the brake van to stop the train. Locomotive brakes on older style engines were wooden brakes. If the engine had to slow down quickly from a high speed, enough friction between the steel wheels and wooden blocks could cause a fire
"At a time, Thomas & Friends wasn't about making money as a franchise. It was about creating or getting across a story or point..." Not only that, but kids shows during said time weren't trying to force learning on the viewers. Right after 2000 we suddenly had this big demand where kids shows must be educational in some way and all of a sudden Thomas & Friends gets all these bullshit learning segments. Not only that, but the characters (Thomas especially) turn into complete morons when it comes to learning anything themselves. I mean, Percy could not understand something, but be afraid to ask for advice, but later on accept help from someone like Thomas, yet in the next season he goes about doing something that he once again doesn't understand. Obviously the writers gave the characters the lack of ability to learn from their mistakes, because that was the only thing they could come up with to write an episode about. Bottom line, Mattel is about as useless as an asshole with taste buds...

Something that has me pondering so much about this story and the real life event is that the LMS Ivatt Class 2 is a Mogul and James has the same configuration. Furthermore, the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway was merged into the LMS. While it's hard to imagine Gordon not being in the scene of falling into a ditch, I can't help but wonder if James would have done something like that too.
