She wasn’t for everyone but she was for me, what i found appealing about her was the fact that she followed what Vastra told her to do ‘give him hell, he’ll always need it’ whenever he stepped out of line, she almost shaped Her own character and 12s character over time, From the cards to his loss of her. Thats why i will always respect this Companion
The impossible girl who jumped into the Doctor's time stream, saved them countless times, was inside a Dalek 3 times, had her own TARDIS & companion, and took the long way 'round. Simply iconic.
Her saying is "run you clever boy and remember me", and yet she's the one the Doctor forgets at the end of it all. Thanks Moffat, I definitely needed that cry!
@@ohlookitisacat7404 Hell Bent. I won't spoil it too much, but the Doctor forgets Clara here and it's heartbreaking! Some people don't like this episode, I think it has some brilliant moments but I understand the overall frustration. I still think it's worth a watch!
She wasn't in love with The Doctor and she didn't want to be his second best. She wanted to be The Doctor. That was so different to all the other companions (in new Who) that came before her. I find it so refreshing that she didn't want to to go along with the idea of The Doctor being this untouchable presence. She saw him as a friend and thought she could be him.
Although I'd disagree that Clara wasn't in love with the Doctor (since I do believe she grew to love him eventually), the rest of your assessment I agree with! Clara definitely never worshipped the Doctor in the same way most of his companions do. As you said, she kinda refused to see the Doctor as this magical authority figure who sat on a pedestal above her. She really saw the two of them as essentially being on the same level (even though River and Donna both liked to take the wind out of the Doctor's sails occasionally, it always seemed to me like they still idolized him secretly). To me, Clara is the only modern companion who really saw the Doctor as an ordinary person first, with genuine vulnerabilities and fears. She seemed to recognize that he could get scared or need help just as often as anyone else would, which I think most of his other companions kinda took for granted. Clara knew the Doctor was amazing but, he wasn't so amazing as to be seen as truly inhuman or infallible.
my favorite part about Clara is the fact that even after 11 she's still is the girl throughout the doctor's timeline helping him and pointing him in the right direction. many people hate her for being narcissistic or an adrenaline junkie, but I think that her flaws just make her a more complete character. sometimes I wonder how would it be if she appeared with 13, but considering the writing, I hope they don't try it
Clara's the best companion in New Who. Jack Harkness comes close but only because Torchwood fleshed him out and Sarah Jane Smith had the advantages of starring in both the Classic series and The Sarah Jane Adventures. I get the feeling that many people don't like to see very flawed characters, although most will deny this. Clara was described by Matt Smith's Doctor as "too perfect", but this facade from Season 7 was stripped away in Seasons 8 and 9 and elevated her into the most multifaceted companion since the revival of Doctor Who. I wouldn't be surprised if she's the most multifaceted in the show's history, but I can't personally confirm that because I haven't watched enough of the Classic series. Amy was a pretty good companion too. I think she's a bit overrated but she did show a dark side that we rarely see in Doctor Who companions. However, it felt like Steven Moffat was scared of focussing on it for too long, like he was worried that the fans would turn on her if he showed her as the ruthless killer that she's capable of being. The most notable example of this is when Amy outright murdered Madam Kovarian and it was brushed under the rug with the excuse that it happened in an alternate timeline. This mindset from writers is perfectly understandable because you don't want people to dislike your characters, unless you're designing them to be both irredeemable AND insufferable (Dolores Umbridge is the first character to come to mind because I'm convinced that J.K Rowling made her as loathsome as possible on purpose), but it can prevent them from feeling fully fleshed out. Technically, Clara isn't as ruthless as Amy because she never murdered anyone but because episodes like Dark Water actually focussed on her dark side instead of brushing it under the rug, the fanbase at large seems to like Amy more. I'm the other way around. The fact that Moffat developed big enough balls to show that Clara's capable of betraying her best friend whilst contemplating suicide is actually one of the things that elevates her above Amy in my mind. We're all capable of becoming monsters, it's just a matter of finding and activating the right trigger. Clara already had good reasons to resent the Doctor after he abandoned her twice earlier in Season 8 (plus, Matt Smith's Doctor actually told the Daleks "Kill her. See if I care!" in his final episode) and Danny's death was the last straw. The volcano scene in Dark Water showed Clara at her lowest point and made me feel like I'd seen into her soul. Just before the opening credits of that episode, I glimpsed a flash of madness in her eyes. Seeing her reach that point made her rise in Season 9 all the more fulfilling. Clara's far too good for Chinballs' Doctor Who. He's already dragged Jack Harkness into his train wreck but I hope that Clara and every other previous companion stays a million lightyears away from Jodie Whittaker. No, I will not call Whittaker the Doctor because the Doctor wouldn't trap creatures who are just trying to feed and starve them to death (Arachnids in the UK), use social awkwardness as an excuse to dismiss a man's concerns about cancer (Can You Hear Me?), or allow another man to die in her place to destroy the Master (The Timeless Children). Clara was a better Doctor without even being one of his regenerations.
@@tomnorton4277 I'm sorry. Clara sucks. A bossy, ego-maniac who's a compulsive liar. Rory was the best companion. Skeptical, level headed, they should've had him as a solo companion for awhile.
Rose Tyler (Billie Piper) was great, Martha Jones (Freema Agyeman) was awesome (though short-lived), Amy Pond (Karen Gillan) was incredible, but Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) and her many incarnations blew my mind away and stole my heart.
Clara was an incredible companion. I loved her and the Twelfth Doctor together. I preferred Jenna with Capaldi than Smith. I was sobbing when she died in Face the Raven but I’m so happy she appeared in the Twelfth Doctor’s final episode.
I'm in floods of tears before this is halfway over. Clara Oswald was my favourite companion because she wasn't 'just' a companion - she was a full partner to Smith and Capaldi, and I fell head-over-heels for her.
She's the best companion probably to be honest. Clara's song is also awesome. I like it especially because the song itself is how I had felt about some special people I've had in my life before. When the 12th doctor saw her again I cried a lot because it had reminded me of seeing a past loved one as well and I knew it wasn't real since it was in a dream but it was bittersweet to see them again much like how 12th probably feels based on his face. I also cried too when the song came on when the 12th doctor met Bill. Dr Who is a great show and it's awesome how Clara is such a great character it can really make us feel just like how the Doctor feels in those moments too!
Yes, Jenna was contemplating leaving the show and the Christmas show was going to be her last show, so Moffat wanted to mirror Matt's departure with Jenna's. She, however, signed on for another season, so they had to rejuvenate Clara, because old Clara just wasn't going to be a great companion, so Moffat wrote a new ending to continue the show with Jenna young again.
@@Riftsrunner I'm glad she stayed on because we got an opportunity to see some of her best acting performances, like when she played her Zygon version and her scenes with Missy. Her talent was under-utilized in Series 7 (except for _The Snowmen_) and I believe that led to a lot of people not wanting her to come back.
@@TonyP9279 Bonnie was an interesting character despite only having 2 episodes. She was usually very composed and graceful with a streak of sadism but occasionally, she would lash out like an angry kid who didn't get her way. I like that the Doctor called her out for being "a tantruming child" and I got the feeling that she was the kind of person who represses their emotions for long periods of time, which makes them more prone to losing control when they reach a boiling point. For me, that Zygon 2 parter is a great example of how to tackle modern problems like domestic terrorism and delusional "save the world" activism without distracting the audience from the story the episodes are actually telling. You can compare it to modern day problems whilst also just enjoying a good story on its own merits. I'm glad Capaldi and Moffat convinced Jenna to stay for series 9. She's a professional and I suspect that's one of the reasons Capaldi and Moffat really liked her. They probably don't see many younger actresses (or even older ones if Sarah Silverman and Bette Midler are any indication) who conduct themselves with class and don't complain when things get difficult or when the audience is nasty. I wouldn't have watched Season 9 at all without Clara because Capaldi's Doctor really rubbed me the wrong way in Season 8. Capaldi himself is a class act but I couldn't stand how hypocritical his Doctor was and how he tended to demean Clara for no reason. Thankfully, he was much more likeable in Season 9 but without Clara, I wouldn't know that because I wouldn't have watched it.
At least they had a backup parallel "You can't see me, can you. You look at me and you can't see me. Do you know what that's like?" In the end, she DOES know what that was like. She knew what it was like to have him look at her and not SEE her
"Tell me what you knew, Doctor, or else I'll smack you so hard you'll regenerate." Her whole speech from "Kill The Moon' was incredible, as were so many others. Along with Donna, she always put The Doctor in his place, I really didn't like her at first, she had some huge shoes to fill, but by the end I was so sad to see her go.
Clara was one of the few companions who could out-Doctor the Doctor, she was easily one of the best companions in the history of the show. The show needs more strong-willed and forward-thinking companions like Clara.
She's top 3 for me, but that's because she turned it around from matt's regeneration, she was whiny and unappreciative, but then we had 12 and they clashed and it made for this amazing clash of chemistry and they worked, you could tell there was passion there and I think they became better friends for it and their respect for each other grew, however! Rose is easily number 1, flawless from start to end
I really love Clara and the show handled the Impossible Girl arc really well during 11’s run. It’s a shame it didn’t get more of a mention during 12’s run but I liked how it continued being important for her relationship with 12, and their strong bond, despite the sudden disjointed feeling she had after 11 regenerated. Jenna is a really talented actress and I couldn’t imagine someone else playing the role of Clara Oswald. 🥰💜
Three things are missing: the time Matt Smith's Doctor shows her inside the Tardis in "The Snowmen"; the moment in "Heaven Sent" when Peter Capaldi's Doctor is ready to quit and she's there to inspire him, and "four and a half billion years" and her reaction from "Hell Bent". She's my Impossible Girl, too, and I will miss her. She can hug me anytime. And there's Murray Gold's theme, which I play when I want a moment of peace.
+ When she said "I don't know if you're a good man but I think you're trying to be and I think that's probably the point" in "Into the Dalek", when she got angry with the doctor and said "I'll smack you so hard you'll regenerate" in "Kill the Moon", the whole "Flatline" episode where she becomes the doctor for a day, her "hatred is too strong an emotion to waste on someone you don't like" speech in "Mummy on the Orient Express", the moment in "Before the Flood" when she says "If you love me in any way, you'll come back", and lastly her saying "You said memories, become stories when we forget them. Maybe some of them become songs" in "Hell Bent". There are probably more of her best moments that I don't remember now but that's what I have :)
I agree, they should have put those moments in too, especially the one from Hell Bent when she reacts to the Doctor saying that if he met her again he would recognize her immediately. Her turning away to hide her pain and keep from crying hits me every time and shows just how much they truly cared for each other.
Not sure if this will ever happen, but if big finish ever hire Jenna Coleman, I'd love to see a series focused on all the alternative versions of Clara and her interactions with the old Doctors.
While I liked Clara, everything after her 1st death with the crow (which was perfect, by the way), is superfluous twaddle. They gave her the perfect out then brought her back for the worst stupidity ever.
I agree Jenna Coleman is like an angel it hurts to look at her because she is so beautiful. And Clara Oswald is one of my favorite female characters EVER!!
My first and favorite companion! Her time with Peter Capaldi is my most favorite era on this show. There was something about her character trying to find herself through her journeys with the Doctor that resonated so deeply with me: a pilot as Oswin, a governess and nanny as both Victorian and present-day Clara, an English teacher with the Eleventh Doctor and the Twelfth…I felt like her becoming different things or playing different roles for different people at different times in her life encapsulated what it was like to find and build an identity throughout one’s life. She made it clear to me that it was OKAY to change and be affected by such change because life itself rarely stayed the same. You could work through the changes and adapt to them, making them work in your favor if you wanted. She was also a large part of my decision to study English in university to one day become a teacher. I adore and feel indebted to this character and Jenna Coleman’s amazing work on this show for how it had shaped me as a teenager growing into a young adult. 💙💙
Clara's my favourite companion despite not being the first one I saw. I watched the others from Ecclestone's era to Smith's era before she joined and the only one who left a strong impression was Jack Harkness, and that's partially because of Torchwood. I've gained more respect for Billie Piper, both as Rose and as the Moment (I like that she played the Moment as distinctly different from Rose because they just share the face, not the character), but Rose wasn't the most interesting of companions. Amy's pretty cool too but they tended to ignore how slutty she was and brushed the fact that she was a murderer under the rug by implying that killing Kovarian in an alternate universe doesn't count. Clara was the companion I bonded with the most. I appreciate that they had the guts to show her at her lowest point in Dark Water and, unlike Amy murdering Kovarian, they didn't brush over the fact that betraying the Doctor was wrong. Personally, I think Clara was justified in her decision in Dark Water, not only because of Danny's death but also because the Doctor had abandoned her TWICE in previous episodes, first in Deep Breath and then in Kill the Moon. In the latter episode he wasn't simply in disguise after pretending to leave Clara, he outright took the TARDIS and flew away, leaving her stranded in a very stressful situation with a teenager and an unborn child in her care and a decision that had the potential to destroy the world on her shoulders. Side note, Clara would be an amazing mother. Back on topic, she was giving the Doctor a taste of his own medicine in Dark Water. However, from a purely ethical point of view, it was still wrong and both Clara and the Doctor acknowledged that, although the Doctor ranting "You let me down!" is incredibly hypocritical when you take Kill the Moon into account. Regardless, we saw Clara reach her lowest point and it made her rise in Season 9 all the more satisfying. Unlike River Song, who I actually like but only because of Alex Kingston (very few actresses can pull off a Mary Sue without being annoying but she's one of them), Clara earned the right to fly a TARDIS.
She was the first companion I ever watched I doctor who in the Christmas special, she was also my favorite, there's allure to a companion who job isn't just to be there and compliment the doctor which I believe is the reason people don't like her, she doubted him, which is something, anyone who is going on dangerous missions should do, but she's the reason I started the show to begin with so I'm kinda biased.
Clara is the best companion ever & always will be! And her last scene with The Doctor always gets to you, always makes you tearful & emotional. So every moments of her were the best! She was just perfect in every way
Clara's not perfect and thank goodness for that. It's because she's not perfect that she feels like a real person. A complex character who will endure the test of time needs flaws. Clara's the most fleshed out companion within the context of Doctor Who itself, at least since the series was revived in 2005. You could argue that Sarah Jane Smith and Jack Harkness were very fleshed out too but this was ONLY because they each had a spinoff series and Sarah Jane was around in Tom Baker's era.
I loved Clara. She was my favorite, regardless of the hate she gets. Seeing her in Capaldi's final episode killed me. I'm glad he got to remember her before he went.
I will always love Jenna Colman and her character in Dr Who, it's a great shame that there hasn't been any episodes with the Doctors Companions meeting up with the latest Dr Who.?
I didn't like Capaldi's Doctor in Season 8 but to be fair, he was MEANT to be an asshole. Steven Moffat once said "It's time for the old beast to snarl at you for a bit" and by golly, Capaldi had snarling down to a fine art. Without Clara though, I would have left Doctor Who considerably sooner and probably would have refused to acknowledge Capaldi as the Doctor. Clara kept me invested and through her, I eventually accepted Capaldi. I think I was going through the same thing as the people who disliked Colin Baker when he first took the role.
@@FS2K4Pilot Those parts were great but came too late. By the time I got to them, I'd stopped giving a shit about the Doctor. Not about Doctor Who in general, just the Doctor himself. I'd transitioned from hating Peter Capaldi into the cold indifference of a man who saw the Doctor die with Matt Smith and couldn't be bothered to care anymore. The Zygon Inversion was the first time I saw the Doctor since Smith's regeneration, apart from when Clara pretended to be him and did it better than the man who was supposed to be playing the real deal. I didn't even care that Peter Capaldi was basically in Hell in Heaven Sent. I was grieving for Clara but that was because she was important to ME, not because she was important to the Doctor. As far as I was concerned, he was just a tool to get her back. I couldn't care less about the pain he was going through to do so. Kind of fitting since Capaldi often treated people like tools to be used and discarded once they've served their purpose. His Doctor's a bad influence.
I never quite felt like the chemistry was right between Clara and 11, but Clara and 12 were one of the best pairings of Doctor and companion in the whole show. Their comedic banter was brilliant, and Series 9 is one of my favorite seasons of Who.
Clara's relationship with Capaldi's Doctor was completely unique and that's why it holds up. I can't think of any other relationship in Doctor Who, or any franchise for that matter, that's quite like theirs. It's like the Doctor was Clara's dad and brother at the same time because he combined the unconditional love of a parent with the petty sniping of a sibling. Clara looked up to him like a daughter would look up to her father, whilst also wanting to outdo him with the kind of tenacity you'd see from a little sister trying to prove herself to her big brother. She deeply respected the Doctor but it wasn't hero worship like it was from most other companions. It was more of a "If the Doctor can be this amazing, so can I" mindset which pushed Clara to take more and more risks until it came back to bite her in Face the Raven. These tendencies were magnified by the fact that Danny was no longer around to keep her grounded in Series 9. Speaking of Danny (who's a very underrated character if you ask me), remember when Clara was nervous about introducing him to the Doctor? It was the kind of insecurity that a teenage girl would have about introducing her boyfriend to her dad. Another great thing about Clara's relationship with Capaldi's Doctor is that it wasn't romantic. Ever since Paul McGann swept Grace Holloway off her feet in the TV movie, the Doctor's relationships with his female companions, and even some of his male ones like Jack Harkness, have been romanticised to varying degrees. The only exception was David Tennant's relationship with Donna Noble. Clara had her romantic time with Matt Smith's Doctor but when Capaldi came along, their relationship changed and became more like family members than lovers. I think the best part is that Clara and the Doctor were equals. Most companions look up to the Doctor in ways that can fall into hero worship. Even Jack, who had a history of time travelling before he met the Doctor AND became immortal, kind of acted like the Doctor was a god. Donna's arguably an exception but when push came to shove, the Doctor gave her no choice in whether she would die with all her memories or live without them. As for River Song, she was written as going too far in the opposite direction, putting her head and shoulders above the Doctor in many ways, to the point where I would even call her a Mary Sue. To Alex Kingston's credit, she's one of the very few actresses who managed to make a Mary Sue likeable but that doesn't erase the problems with the writing. Fortunately, it seems to me that Steven Moffat learned from his mistakes with River because Clara's relationship with the Doctor was very evenly balanced. If she had his lifespan and regeneration abilities, they would be equals in every way. The Doctor's relationship with Clara is a perfect example of how to portray men and women as equals without resorting to romance.
I loved Stephen Moffat's vision of Clara, and I think Jenna Coleman brought that out beautifully. I especially loved Clara's speech to the young boy in the barn.
11 and Clara, I miss those days, my favourite Doctor and companion combination. When other shows end you move on, but Doctor Who is ever-present, when the Doctor and companions aren't as good as your favourites it's really hard to watch. Here's to Matt Smith, Jenna-Louise Coleman and the supporting cast who played recurring roles in those episodes.
She’s my all time favourite! I love her! It really bugs me when people say they dislike her because she’s controlling…it was stated time and time again that that’s how her character was written. She was supposed to be a polar opposite to the doctor. That’s why missy put them together in the first place…to create chaos. But their differences ended up being their bond. I don’t think anyone will ever come close to Clara. Her relationship with the doctor was next level. He literally killed for her…he’s never done that before. No one can ever be the doctors equal but she came damn close! I miss her so much!
That's why some people hate her so much, because the Doctor DID kill for her, breaking one of his most important rules to never harm. They don't like how important she became to him be a she's not their favorite companion. They think she makes all the other companions less important and they (really) hate her for that. Too bad for them.
She was the reason I started to watch doctor who when I was 12. I'm 18 now, and she will always be my favourite companion. I hope she comes back if a 60th anniversary episode happens
My favourite companion! Clara and Twelve are my all time favourite partnership, both perfect and so toxic for one another. "You and me, look how far I went for fear of losing you! This has to stop, one of us has to go!" What a beautifully bittersweet story. I miss the impossible girl.
I've never understood the hate Clara received.... I thought she was a great character, in all her incarnations. My only complaint...no, not complaint, but a WISH--it would have been so cool to see even more. Especially as Jenna Coleman is an absolutely terrific actress and could have brilliantly carried it off.
I think that the moment "You are the only mystery worth solving" is one of the most underrated. It's sweet and sets an interesting question of companions brings dead and alive at the same time. And again gives the view of the Doctor on humans one more time
@@davidcrazyrides 💯 agreed, they just ignored what happened with the timeless child and threw a new story at us. They connected but so much was forgotten. Matt and Clara needed one whole season at the very least.
Clara Oswald The impossible girl, I miss seeing her in the Doctor who series. I wish Clara would have stayed in longer than she had. She's one of my favorites along with Rose Tyler.
1. This is the fourth day in a row that I have cried about Clara Oswald, no joke. 2. It's so endearing that the Doctor "will never see any difference" in Clara, even with 62 years.
Clara is my absolute favourite companion, her introduction is so new and different. Her chemistry with both Doctor’s is brilliant, especially 12. Her development across the three series she’s in is also done really well. Jenna is also my favourite actress and she gives a brilliant performance as Clara, just like all her other roles, but Clara will always be my favourite of hers

@@cdoors10 No, I haven’t. No, you’re not sick of something that never happened. (Oh, and you never even mentioned a Discord, so how can people use a link that’s not there‽) (And am I seriously not even allowed to make a simple comment or joke like this‽)
The production quality and story writing was just fantastic during Clara's time. Can never forget her first episode when she first meets the Doctor, just brilliant in every way, and the music throughout that period of time was stunning, really set the mood so well. Simply Doctor Who at it's best.
She became too special and stayed too long. I think show runners need to be really careful with two things 1) how important/special they make their Doctor 2) how important/special they make their companion Clara very quickly became one of the most important people in the Doctor's life. And not just 'her' Doctor's life, but _every_ single Doctor's life. No companion should have that sort of presence in a show like this.
@@TeaSquiffy2 I agree. I don't watch the show for the companions and with Clara it seemed like the show went from Doctor Who to Companion Who. The Doctor was like her sidekick.
@@floydranson2403 Yeah, I agree. I knew how bad it had become when they found a way to put her name first, and her eyes in the title sequence for an episode
@@TeaSquiffy2 I don't think staying too long is a negative I would like for Doctors and companions to stay longer. It's strange how they are only on the show for short periods of time and I know most of the time they leave cause the actors don't want to stay but it would be nice if we had one Doctor or companion for at least 5 to 6 seasons.
@@CometStar100 Way too long in my opinion. New companions mean new stories and dynamics. If a character stays for 5 seasons, there's a point where their dynamic stagnates and nothing new can happen. A new companion can reveal a new side to the Doctor, or a different pace. Shorter tenures mean more and varied character arcs.
Capaldi is amazing. in the last scene of 'Last Christmas' you can sense the underplayed sadness and regret in every single one of his lines. An incredible actor.
@@someguy3038 Yeah the Russel T Davis era was great and the Steven Mofatt era was just solid with some great moments here and there. Then I would like to forget that comes after that. Russel T Davis era was the best of the show though.
@@someguy3038 In your opinion, maybe- everyone has a different opinion on this, for example, David's era was borderline mediocre for me while I loved everything after
Clara was my favorite companion in the modern era. The second Romana was my favorite in the classic era. I have both their action figures. I really loved Jenna's accent as Oswin compared to both versions of Clara. It still sounded British to me but from a different part of the United Kingdom.
Clara, Oswin and Clara Oswin were fundamentally the same person but if all 3 of them were in the same room, you'd still be able to tell them apart. Jenna's attention to detail rivals that of Laurence Olivier. I think she actually has more natural talent than he did because although Olivier's attention to detail was superb, he wasn't born with as much talent as, for example, Marlon Brando and there are people, including my grandmother, who think that he tended to ham it up. Jenna was rivalling performers like John Hurt and Diana Rigg, both of whom had decades of experience and legendary reputations, before she even reached the age of 30 and she continued to rival, if not surpass Rigg when they reunited for Victoria. I think the only living actress who might surpass Jenna in raw talent is Michelle Pfeiffer, who has consistently claimed that she was self-taught.
The only companion to both completely break everything in the Doctor's timeline. The idea that he and Clara are inexorably linked is tantalizing... and I don't think the Impossible Girl's story is done. ... at least, we can hope.
Clara is and always will be my favorite character. I hated her death, she deserved better and literally screamed when she got to say goodbye to the 12th Doctor when he regenerated
That speech before she walks off to her death always gets me. I really did like these two together, i loved how they were both the doctor. Loved the chaos.
I was bowled over the first time I saw Clara Oswald, so amazingly attractive and a voice I can listen to all day long. I don't know if Jenna Coleman has a similar personality as her character Clara, but Clara is the kind of person I wish I had in my life to talk to. It never even occurred to me that people didn't like Clara Oswald until recently when I was watching youtube comments. I suppose no character is in life is exempt from dislike, even Santa Clause.
Because she's unapologetically narcisstic. Acts entitled, thinks too highly of her and is cruel to the people around her, the Doctor and Danny. At least when Moffat writes her. I found her likeable in the Jamie Mathieson scripts, Mummy and Flatline
@@MrAllallalla You say she's narcissistic, but found her likeable in Flatline, an episode where she is the most narcissistic in the whole series from her being in the doctor's shoes. Kinda weird dude.
One reason I suspect is that she got so many great and rare honours as a companion. Very few companions get to be a “trans Doctor companion”, that is they’re travelling with them when they regenerate and continue travelling with them in their next iteration. Very few get to “do the rounds” of villains and aliens and meet (or at least be in the same story as) most if not all of the Doc’s recurring enemies. Very few get to be the incumbent companion for a big milestone. Like I say each of those are rare honours for any companion I can think of ONLY TWO in the entire history of Doctor Who who were lucky enough to get ALL of them: Tegan and Clara. If Rory and Amy had stopped on for just a short while longer all that of could have been their’s. But no along comes little Miss Jenny come lately and swipes ‘em all. So some of it *might* be a touch of the green eyed monster from Pond fans
@@bombsaway6197 Not really. She didn’t really feature in a milestone as Billie Piper was playing a different character, not Rose as such. And even if the character of Rose did feature, she wasn’t the incumbent companion. So like a few others (Peri and Sarah for instance) she comes close, but I vote no.
What I love best about this Doctor -- or rather this Doctor with Amy -- is how strongly it affirms that a relationship between a male and female can very strong, with unbreakable bonds, without being a romantic relationship, or mother/son, or brother/sister, or teacher/student, or any other things but friend/friend. I've been so incredibly blessed to have one, and it has seemed too good to be friend/friend. A friendship bond can be stronger than the others.
The perfect "welcome to the TARDIS" scene. Like how Lucas or Spielberg took familiar moments from old genre movies and honed them into scenes which seemed like all-new, instant classics, Moffat did that with Victorian Clara and the trope of becoming a companion. Okay, so it was as a set up to an unpleasant twist I kind of wish had never happened, but it really should have played here if these are genuinly her "best of"
I love her piano theme. I find myself humming it when I think of Doctor Who sometimes. My favorite two seasons are 5 and 6 with Amy, Rory and River...but a close second is Clara's two seasons with 12.
🦋 Hi, Clara's rwo seasons with 12 are my favorites also. Also Rose and 9 were good. The WWIi episode "Empty Child" was awesome. I didn't connect with Amy and Rory, although he is hilarious and self-effacing. Rose's Theme is my 2nd favorite. 😊
"I've made many mistakes and it's about time I do something about that...Clara I'm not your boyfriend" "I never thought you were" "I never said it was your mistake" OUCH 😞
The father-and-daughter dynamic is why Capaldi and Clara work so well. What would a father do for his daughter? To avenge her? She knew she had to cap him. A father would burn the universe for his daughter, and she couldn't allow that. Especially knowing he would witness her death. The father would be proud of her, facing the consequences of her actions, but enraged. For the Doctor, that rage could extend across the universe. This moment is what made Clara great. She understood the Doctor. Understood him more than any other companion, possibly.
I am still not ready to re-watch her death scene. She means more to me than any other companion. How I would like to hug her, the way a child would hug someone they really like.
I always read other people’s comments saying that other people didn’t like Clara, but I never actually see comments of the kind. The fact is she is the most beautiful companion he ever had. You fall in love with her the moment you see her face.
Oh they exist, there's even whole videos on it! You should see some of rabbid dog, spittle flying, obscene spewing things they said about her and Moffat's writing about and overall obsession with her. It's kind of pathetic really.
Didn’t rose tyler become a literal god? Martha Jones became a jehovas witness, Donna Noble became human doctor hybrid thing, and billy became a water alien thing.
I haven't watched Face the Raven or Hell Bent since they came out half a decade ago. Now I'm crying again. I accepted long ago that I would never relive the incredible impact they had on me when I first watched them. After Face the Raven, I spend the whole of Heaven Sent grieving for Clara and Hell Bent gave me an extraordinary experience that will never be replaced, combining a heartbreaking end with an optimistic future which left me a sobbing wreck. However, the fact that these scenes make me sad all these years later is good enough for me.
3:40 Every single little knowing glance at the camera in this show is awesome. The one 11 does right after "I will always remember when the Doctor was me" is awesome too.
she made doctor who also Matt Smith is my favourite doctor and those two will go down in history at least for me. also the amount of times she died out of all of the "companions " show the trust and faith she had in the doctor, I've never cried so hard from the loss of both the 11th doc and her.
Gosh I miss this kind of Doctor. Not someone who tries too hard to be quirky or puts the Doctor in the back seat completely and strips the character of what generations of being the Doctor was about. A story and character that feels like everything that was built upon it, matters.
I'm convinced that what the doctor was gonna say before she died and what she told him before he stole a tardis is that they love eachother. Had the docotr become a younger man or stayed like Matt Smit then they definitely would have developed some kind of romantic relationship. That's why I wish they would have gotten a happy ending like River or Donna. The doctor could have taken some time and just lived out Clara's life with her. Sure it would be sad when she died but they would have had a whole life togther going on adventures and doing whatever. instead he almost never mentions Clara even after he remembered her. It's almost as if he just forgot about the person who he was willing to break all of time for.
Thank you for the retrospective on Clara. She was definitely my favorite companion, spanning ¿4 Doctors?... And the actress was always absolutely gorgeous.

@@HeidiSholl Oh that, well at least it took some time to get there
She wasn't in love with The Doctor and she didn't want to be his second best. She wanted to be The Doctor. That was so different to all the other companions (in new Who) that came before her. I find it so refreshing that she didn't want to to go along with the idea of The Doctor being this untouchable presence. She saw him as a friend and thought she could be him.
She wasn’t so different from all the other companions. Remember Donna
She wasn't in love but they did give off flirtatious best friend vibes. (11 and clara)
And she paid the price then ridiculously got what she wanted
She was with Matt Smith
my favorite part about Clara is the fact that even after 11 she's still is the girl throughout the doctor's timeline helping him and pointing him in the right direction. many people hate her for being narcissistic or an adrenaline junkie, but I think that her flaws just make her a more complete character.
sometimes I wonder how would it be if she appeared with 13, but considering the writing, I hope they don't try it
i completely agree!!
She could very easily make a cameo....

Clara really does not deserve all the hate she gets. Good job Jenna!
ouch, that ending hurt more than i remember, and i watched that episode like two weeks ago-
I think the haters were jealous. Clara was so smart and tenacious. I adore her😊
I just realized that the 12th and Clara's christmas cracker scene was a reference to 11th and Clara's christmas cracker scene.
Yeah, it was. Like they say in Star Wars: It rhymes. .
At least they had a backup parallel
"You can't see me, can you. You look at me and you can't see me. Do you know what that's like?"
In the end, she DOES know what that was like. She knew what it was like to have him look at her and not SEE her
"Tell me what you knew, Doctor, or else I'll smack you so hard you'll regenerate."
Her whole speech from "Kill The Moon' was incredible, as were so many others. Along with Donna, she always put The Doctor in his place, I really didn't like her at first, she had some huge shoes to fill, but by the end I was so sad to see her go.

Imagine that line being said to the 13th doctor by a male companion.
Clara was one of the few companions who could out-Doctor the Doctor, she was easily one of the best companions in the history of the show. The show needs more strong-willed and forward-thinking companions like Clara.
It also made for some funny scenes where clara was just the doctor
She's top 3 for me, but that's because she turned it around from matt's regeneration, she was whiny and unappreciative, but then we had 12 and they clashed and it made for this amazing clash of chemistry and they worked, you could tell there was passion there and I think they became better friends for it and their respect for each other grew, however! Short & sweet
+ When she said "I don't know if you're a good man but I think you're trying to be and I think that's probably the point" in "Into the Dalek", when she got angry with the doctor and said "I'll smack you so hard you'll regenerate" in "Kill the Moon",
the whole "Flatline" episode where she becomes the doctor for a day, her "hatred is too strong an emotion to waste on someone you don't like" speech in "Mummy on the Orient Express", the moment in "Before the Flood" when she says "If you love me in any way, you'll come back", and lastly her saying "You said memories, become stories when we forget them. Maybe some of them become songs" in "Hell Bent". There are probably more of her best moments that I don't remember now but that's what I have :)
You’re right! i love her and her theme was absolutely wonderful.
I agree, they should have put those moments in too, especially the one from Hell Bent when she reacts to the Doctor saying that if he met her again he would recognize her immediately. Her turning away to hide her pain and keep from crying hits me every time and shows just how much they truly cared for each other.
Although I always thought her theme sounded a tad like an icecream van???

People say all sorts of stuff about Moffat, but I think we can all agree, he can turn a phrase like no other who writer
Wasn’t a big fan of her with Mat Smith, preferred Victorian Clara with him, but can agree that Clara and Capaldi were amazing!

Just like Van Gogh in Vincent and the Doctor. 🎨 🖌 🖼
@@tomnorton4277Capaldi’s my personal favorite because of his Zygon War speech, and his performance in “The Husbands of River Song”.
@@tomnorton4277 I don’t know what to say to that.
I never quite felt like the chemistry was right between Clara and 11, but Clara and 12 were one of the best pairings of Doctor and companion in the whole show. Their comedic banter was brilliant, and Series 9 is one of my favorite seasons of Who.
Definitely agreed, only rivaled by 10 and Donna
The characters of 12 and Clara paired so brilliantly!!! Clara is exactly what 12 needed.
Clara and Amy Pond, both absolutely marvellous characters
What was funny was when she saw Amy Pond’s picture.

You're absolutely right
My favourite companion! Clara and Twelve are my all time favourite partnership, both perfect and so toxic for one another. "You and me, look how far I went for fear of losing you! This has to stop, one of us has to go!" What a beautifully bittersweet story. I miss the impossible girl.
Clara was, by far, the best companion to the Doctor, if you ask me.
"You are the only mystery worth solving," is a sentence I will never forget in my life.
I've never understood the hate Clara received....
I thought she was a great character, in all her incarnations. My only complaint...no, not complaint, but a WISH--it would have been so cool to see even more.
Especially as Jenna Coleman is an absolutely terrific actress and could have brilliantly carried it off.
Well my problem is more with the writing in season 8&9
I think that the moment "You are the only mystery worth solving" is one of the most underrated. It's sweet and sets an interesting question of companions brings dead and alive at the same time. And again gives the view of the Doctor on humans one more time
Jenna Coleman absolutely killed it as Clara 👏
Clara will always be my favourite companion.
It's a shame that the 11th doctor and Clara Oswald never got a full season together. I hope big finish will rectify it.
They essentially did though if you include the 50th and the Christmas special.
Matt should of stay as The Doctor for 1 more season he quit way too soon
@@davidcrazyrides 💯 agreed, they just ignored what happened with the timeless child and threw a new story at us. They connected but so much was forgotten.
Matt and Clara needed one whole season at the very least.
Oh I loved her so much. I miss her. One of my favorite companions, especially with 12.
Clara Oswald The impossible girl,
I miss seeing her in the Doctor who series.
I wish Clara would have stayed in longer than she had. She's one of my favorites along with Rose Tyler.
That scene from Twice Upon A Time is soul-destroying in the best possible way.
Yes because it signalled the end of the show with the Chibnall trainwreck about to happen
@@gpinion29 ah yes the dark times
Always gets me to shed a tear, this one. I so loved Capaldi's Doctor, he was the one who gave me chills and emotions the most!
Pond and Oswald the best ever omg I cried so hard
I was wondering how long it’d be before you commented on this compilation! 🤣

The production quality and story writing was just fantastic during Clara's time. Can never forget her first episode when she first meets the Doctor, just brilliant in every way, and the music throughout that period of time was stunning, really set the mood so well. Simply Doctor Who at it's best.
I never understood people who hate Clara Oswald. She is my favourite Doctor Who Companion. For such moments.
She became too special and stayed too long. I think show runners need to be really careful with two things
1) how important/special they make their Doctor
2) how important/special they make their companion
Clara very quickly became one of the most important people in the Doctor's life.
I miss this era of Doctor Who :(
David's was better
@@someguy3038 Yeah the Russel T Davis era was great and the Steven Mofatt era was just solid with some great moments here and there. Then I would like to forget that comes after that. Russel T Davis era was the best of the show though.
@@someguy3038 In your opinion, maybe- everyone has a different opinion on this, for example, David's era was borderline mediocre for me while I loved everything after
@@godhathirumalaianandanpill3140 does that include chibnal era? Because implying jodie doctor better than david doctor is just stupid
Same, I stopped watching at the end of 12. I just can't like #13, the writing and acting is dismal
One of the best companions
Heck yess
True
Jenna is from Blackpool. Every so often you can hear her Lancashire accent.
Clara was my favourite companion, she played the role perfectly
That speech before she walks off to her death always gets me. I really did like these two together, i loved how they were both the doctor. Loved the chaos.
I was bowled over the first time I saw Clara Oswald, so amazingly attractive and a voice I can listen to all day long. I don't know if Jenna Coleman has a similar personality as her character Clara, but Clara is the kind of person I wish I had in my life to talk to. It never even occurred to me that people didn't like Clara Oswald until recently when I was watching youtube comments. I suppose no character is in life is exempt from dislike, even Santa Clause.
Just realized that the 123 in the Wi-Fi password referenced the 3 times we had seen Clara
It’s taken me EIGHT years to figure that out omg
@@alinaponce9090 wow didn't realize it was eight years
The most nuanced characters in Who are 10, 12, Rose, and - of course - Clara.
They may not all be for me, but they are phenomenally written.
And Yaz!
(Joke)
(Not an NMD)
@@harleyhartley3168 🤣 you had me
I've no idea why some people hate her ..
@@TaliesinapCerridwen Would Rose not fit into that description as well?
I loved clara so much, you posting this might mean its time for a rewatch
YAAAAAAAASSS QUUEEEEEEEEEEENNNNNNNN. people hating on her for no reason.love her and love moffat's writing for her. come at me.
Did y'all not include the time Victorian Clara went in the Tardis? Not even include the present Clara?
The perfect "welcome to the TARDIS" scene. Like how Lucas or Spielberg took familiar moments from old genre movies and honed them into scenes which seemed like all-new, instant classics, Moffat did that with Victorian Clara and the trope of becoming a companion. Okay, so it was as a set up to an unpleasant twist I kind of wish had never happened, but it really should have played here if these are genuinly her "best of"
Clara Oswald is the best companion!
I love Clara, but I adore Amy Pond. The best Companion….Amy.
Overhated and underrated, that's our Clara. Definitely the best!
For me Rose and Amy & Rory are better. I'd say she is my 3ed favorite in modern who.
It is a toss up between Clara and Amy/Rory
🦋 "Clara's Theme" is the best music and most memorable of all companion themes in my opinion. 😊 She is my favorite companion.
Smart, sassy, strong, funny, and obviously gorgeous - she's amazing!
Easily my favourite companion. I cried for her on several occasions.
"I've made many mistakes and it's about time I do something about that...Clara I'm not your boyfriend"
"I never thought you were"
"I never said it was your mistake"
OUCH 😞
My favourite companion!! The perfect match for the doctor in series 8 and 9 :))
That moment you realise 30 minutes and 40 seconds of this video is both eleven and Claras moments together
Let that sink in
I'm suprised that not every Clara moment is her best
The father-and-daughter dynamic is why Capaldi and Clara work so well. What would a father do for his daughter? To avenge her? She knew she had to cap him. A father would burn the universe for his daughter, and she couldn't allow that. Especially knowing he would witness her death. The father would be proud of her, facing the consequences of her actions, but enraged. For the Doctor, that rage could extend across the universe. This moment is what made Clara great. She understood the Doctor. Understood him more than any other companion, possibly.
Her scenes and character had such emotional depth and impact ❤ from laughs to tears. Much love and respect Clara
I can't find favorites anymore. Each can make you laugh your ass off or make you cry. Thank you for all who did this epic bit of television history.
I am still not ready to re-watch her death scene. She means more to me than any other companion. How I would like to hug her, the way a child would hug someone they really like.
Jenna Coleman (Clara Oswald) is such an amazing actress. She always puts everything into her character and makes a great series even GREATER.
Her becoming the "Impossible girl" was a little weird, but besides that she is my favorite companion on the show!
Has it been five years already??? No offense to Jodie Whitaker, but writing has been awful in the later seasons
I love Clara she is so underrated
Yeah, she's absolutely one of the best
Under-rated and waaaaay over-hated. For me, she's one of the best Companions ever, and her chemistry/interplay with Capaldi was a joy to behold.
"What's the point of being a doctor if I can't cure you ?" Oh gosh 🥺💔
I cried through this whole video. The ache of not being able to experience these moments for the first time again is pain.
Gosh I miss this kind of Doctor. Not someone who tries too hard to be quirky or puts the Doctor in the back seat completely and strips the character of what generations of being the Doctor was about. A story and character that feels like everything that was built upon it, matters.
Clara is just the peak of fantasy writing in the history of British television.
Clara was my first childhood crush - I cant remember actually crying over another TV character death besides her...
Great actress!
Billy Piper ,Amy Pond & Clara Oswald, were my absolutely favourite Dr Who companions all beyond fantastic
Clara Oswald is the best Doctor there ever was.
Clara Oswald for me was the best... I loved her acting in each chapter.
The imposible girl story was my first introduction to doctor who, and i loved it every single moment
Clara will always be my all time favorite companion.
Been watching this show for 40 years and Clara is my absolute favorite.
I cant be the only one who preferred the 11 x clara dynamic over 12 x clara
Sorry but, I think you might be. Though I respect your opinion
The best series of doctor who, I would like to see clara as doctor on future.
even moffat himself said that jenna would be a fantastic doctor and he's right. I think she would nailed it.

That would be awesome
If she had been the 13th, the show would not have nose-dived and I could have “bought” the “I’m a girl now” change!! She was perfect!
Damn, didn’t realize Clara was hated until reading the comments, she’s probably in my top 3 companions of New Who, Donna is number 1.
Thank you for the retrospective on Clara. She was definitely my favorite companion, spanning ¿4 Doctors?... And the actress was always absolutely gorgeous.
