- Had a blast working and leading up to the Idle Hands Craft show in Ottawa, Ontario that I do every year. This year I decided to document as much of the process as I could and analyze the amount of time and money that went into the process.

Craftshow videos like this one that include profit with time/cost breakdowns are so satisfying to watch! The paddle is awesome and I didn't think a big ticket item like that would sell as well as it did.
yaaa it gets tricky for sure. i fortunately have a fairly dedicated ig following which usually comes through and folks nab stuff when they can. so mega grateful for that. thanks soo much for checkign this out :)
I am always here for the process videos and I am here 1000x for cost/profit breakdowns! Love the transparency. I really need to get my hands on on of your paddles. I know these are works of art but you know I would use it to stir up our wood fired hot tub and it would do a good job propelling our dinged up Grumman canoe
yeoooow say no more, might have to get you one!
Awesome stuff! It's nice to see people appreciate and want to purchase your art. I love to cook and would love the knife! Cheers everyone.
noted greg! thanks for checking this out :)
I really enjoy your social media posts showing your progress on all the different projects. I wouldn’t have known about Idle Hands if not for your feed. I think it’s pretty honest and real, to talk about the imposter syndrome. I can see from your video that the people of Ottawa certainly validated your work with sold out show. I adore that you showcase Amber as well. Such a great team and support for each other. I have admired your work for some time now, and was inspired to make my own paddle at OCW. My bestie and I canoe in the summer and I would be so pleased to be able to give her one of yours so we could each have a hand made paddle when we go out together.
Thanks for all your hard work, and for supporting other talented artists and makers. It certainly does not go unnoticed. Cheers!
heather, this means soo much! your support definitely doesn't go unnoticed. I can't thank you enough!
Thanks for breaking it down... your comments as you drove to the show about "imposter syndrome" really struck home as we are so often our own worst critics. Congrats on a good sale. I'd be interested to hear how you settled on some of your prices.
I don't drink coffee and I make my own paddles, so that means I'd pick a knife. Though I'd probably have more fun with some of those prepared skateboard blanks and make my own paddle! Thanks for sharing your work!
oooh ok duly noted (on the blanks haha)! and it's just a general feeling i always kinda got. buuuuut i try and preface everything with learning and i appreciate failing (most of the times haha)
Idle Hands is the best craft show in the city! Didn’t have a chance to snag one of your pieces there but have admired your work for a few years now. A knife would get the most use in our household!
oooh thanks soo much madeleine! it's such an incredible show that jenn curates! mega grateful to have a chance to be there :)
Great video! The paddle would be my choice for its unique, handcrafted quality. As an active outrigger canoe paddler in Hawaii, I’ve always been drawn to paddle design worldwide. Mahalo!
soo fun right? cheers david!
One day a Szeto knife will be in our house!! Great work as always... Sorry I couldn't make the show.
haha alllll good my dude! you were missed for sure! you're in for the knife!
I’m a chef and think your stuff is absolutely amazing, I just bought a 814 can’t wait to get started! Keep turning
ayeee thanks dennis! mega appreciate the watch!
I enjoy watching your videos. You remind me of an old friend (who am I kidding, all my friends are old!). Ted, my friend back in the 60's, 70's & 80's thought like you in the way he would take "junk" that others were throwing away and make art out of it. He made a descent living doing it and during the time he lived at my place he also made us a garden we still use today.
Please carry on my young friend, you bring back some great times for an old man.
I hope your very successful in your life!
oh my bruce, this means soo much! really appreciate you checking this out :) hope you have a great day out there!
I would definitely paddle down Lake Poisson Blanc ! I truly love your craftsmanship! Absolutely fantastic!
oooh amazing! i'm there often haha. love climbing the elephant!
I would love the paddle! I’m currently building a boat through the winter and looking forward to using it this summer!
I appreciate you showing us “how the sausage is made”! And my, what beautiful sausages they are! I would chef up a mean game in the kitchen with one of those knives.
cheers andrea! you're in the running for a knife!
Your work is just beautiful! Since we're creating a homestead in the wilderness, I would love a paddle. Since the house is tiny, I would display it proudly above the door when not in use! A knife would be my second choice and would also be displayed above the camp stove when not in use.
oooh cheers! you're in the running!
That paddle is gorgeous. Seeing as I've never sat in a canu, it's gonna be the most beautiful wall decoration I ever posessed lol
haha cheers henrik!
Well done Andrew! Although I miss your talents on the west coast, I get such joy watching what you have come up with. Congrats on a successful craft fair. Your paddles are pure art and definitely are my favourite. Next time you are on the island, let me know and I'll have you up to our beach house which has many similarities to your sauna project. Keep doing what you are doing! CCG Sue
ooooh would love that sue! you do such great work! I really should have taken up roger and joanne back in the day and tried out the ROC! haha alas, working for DFO Comms as one of the senior videographers and we got an uphill climb there. hoping to make some progress haha.
I am absolutely in love with the paddles, a very unique medium, they would would look great on my wall in my office. Amazing work man 🤘🏻
tossing my name in for that gorgeous knife! I’d use that to break down some veggies for dinner parties with friends. Maybe sweet potatoes for a cozy chili, or mangoes for a salsa in the summer 👀
ayoo cheers alex! you're in the running
Awesome video!!! What an awesome day that was. Just watched with kiddo, he’s so inspired! We are about to binge a few more videos together ♥️
His entry to the giveaway was the knife, to give to mama, and also practice cutting vegetables himself.
✌️
you're in! thanks sam! see ya sundaaaaaay!
Thanks for sharing - finally was feeling ready to think about doing a couple shows this year myself.
Have been watching your channel since the A-Frame cabin build. Always enjoy your positive energy. Would I like to have that knife? Yes! I'm always experimenting with veggie recipes, so it would be great to have a beautiful knife to chop up cabbages. Wishing you well on this endeavor--I've worked craft shows before; hard work but completely worth it and such a joy.
yesss can't thank you enough! really appreciate you checking this stuff through thick and thin haha
hella craftsmanship!!!! 💯🔥those are some pretty sick products, I loooove the plant stands! also I looove that mushroom rug!
ayyye thanks a bunch for checking this out!
Love this! So happy you guys did so well. You are so creative and your style is amazing and unique. The paddle would go great at our cottage alongside your pennant. Ambers rugs are sweet. It was worth taking the time to document your process to figure out the end result. 🤩🤗
oooh brenda! thanks soo much! it would go well alongside the pennant! you're in the running for sure!
Epic video as always! I just had a market at a local brewery and did much better than I thought I would. I wish I had kept track of all the hours I put in to see my actual rate. Markets always remind me that at least someone else is interested in what I'm working on. As for your products, I would love a coffee tamper. I have a lathe that I'm just figuring out and hope to make some eventually. I would give yours to my local coffee house that's about 2 blocks from me. 🤙🤙 Much love from Ohio!
ayeee i gotta figure out ways to give back more too. duly noted on the tamp! great to hear from you (from cold, cold ottawa)
Love your videos, projects and seeing your processes! As an older skater and someone who enjoys cooking I would LOVE to be put in the pot for the knife.
cheers! you're in the running. thanks soo much!
That paddle looks amazing. I’d try use it with my paddle board but most likely put it on the wall and brag about it to all my friends
haha niiice! it might be too short for use with a paddle board, but on the wall is always a go-to, too! haha
I love the paddle! That would be an awesome to use out paddle boarding or just and on the wall. Absolutely fantastic work!
oowee cheers!
I would really love the paddle, I'm hoping to have a new house soon and would love it as a centrepiece. Really cool to see the business behind a little bit as I love your products and your channel. Keep it up man ❤️
oooh duly noted james! you're in for the paddle!
@@AndrewSzeto oh wow!! Thank you so much!
@@jamesprivett1257 oh like you're in for the draw! just to clarify haha
@@AndrewSzeto haha, yeah man I got you, again thank you so much - either way 🙂
Hey Andrew! You make such beautiful and amazing things and I appreciate your willingness to always share your journey with us. It’s a dream of my wife’s and mine to one day build a canoe and that paddle would be an amazing gift for her! Hopefully one day we’ll find ourselves on a lake in a canoe we’ve built with your art piece in hand!
whaaaaat! holy heck that would be sweet! building a canoe is an incredible time! holler if you need anything at all! emotional support or any of that! 400 hours of work, but totally worth it!
This was really cool insight to see! I would love that tamper to gift to my neighbor that owns a coffee shop!
cheers paul! appreciate the watch!
Thanks for showing the process! I've been watching your channel for a long time and it's a pleasure to watch you work through things for the first time (A frame vid), a big fan of how candid you are about your skills and experience.
Been using the same Victorinox knife for about 8 years, 7 of those in commercial kitchens in Michigan and Ontario. Would love to put one of your knives to work!
thank you sooo much max! duly noted and you're in the running! mega appreciate everything!
I would love any of the products but the knife/espresso press I'd get the most use out of! The paddle I would either hang as decor or potentially use one day if I ever go canoeing or paddle boarding. I'm down for the knife or espresso thingy!
I love this process video. Seeing the breakdown of time and cost as well and your wage at the end was super helpful. I’ve thought about taking my art/craft to the point of sales, and this is a great help. Also, I always love watching anything you do. I would love ANYTHING you make, and will for sure buy from you in the future. If I was lucky enough to win, I suppose I’d use and display the paddle first, then the knife then the tamper, but I’d be grateful for any. The story behind the items is what I’d share with family/friends. I’m sure my fellow old highschool skater/punk friends would be most impressed. TLDR- Just love your art!
oweee TJ! I appreciate this thoughtful comment soo much! always happy and here to try and help! you're in the running for the paddle :)
I'd love the espresso tamper! I've been a fan of your work, and still have the camera straps you made probably 10 years ago, and they are still going strong.
yesss marek! i was gonna say, i recognized the name right away haha. really appreciate the support marek! you're definitely in the running!
I love the tamper, I’d give it to my skateboarding spouse❤️
Really love these videos! You are so creative!
cheers amanda! duly noted and thanks soo much for checking this out :)
Can't beat that hourly rate!! Glad to things went well and like many others, appreciate the honesty going into it. I'm more of a kayaker myself, but would still love a shot at that paddle! Either way, I'll be tuned for the next video 🍻
ayeee thanks soo much ben! mega appreciate you checking this out. you're in the running!
Love this video! Nice to see behind the scenes, how your things are made. Creative much? hehehe Well done you two!
aww thank you soo much! mega appreciate you checking this out :)
The tamper is rad! I’d give it to a good homie doing a donation based coffee shop.
Always stoked on your projects
cheers man! donation based coffee shop eh! might need more info, sounds like such a good initiative!
Absolutely beautiful work. I would love a paddle to display on my wall in the living room.
cheers karen! really appreciate you checking this out. you're in the running!
Great film, cool shots and editing. Super interesting! Thanks for doing all the maths. Takes time to record all your time. : ) Mahalo for sharing! : )
Gary you're the best! Thank you soo much brother!
Just found your UA-cam page, love the paddles, looking forward to your next project
noah! thanks soo much!
This was awesome! Well done! If I were to choose one of the items it would be the knife. I'd gift it to a friend of mine who is a bit of an amateur cook, and a DIY type, so I know he'd appreciate the craftsmanship and upcycling aspect. Cheers!
cheers andrew! appreciate you checking this out! you're in the running!
Love your paddles. It would match my pen and shaving brush that I have from you! Stoked to see Ottawa getting some love!
whaaat no way graeme! that means a lot! thank you!
Great video as usual! I'm enjoying seeing the progress on the sauna as well. For the items, I like the paddle a lot and would give it to my younger brother who canoes the rivers quite a bit here in Iowa.
duly noted Joe! you're in the running! thanks soo much for checking this out!
I would love the paddle! I would love to tell you that I would use it on the water but it would be placed on my wall. It would really just be used to remind and inspire me to get out on the water 🙂
ahh right on ezra! i use mine in the water often (i kind of have to haha). 75% of them go up on walls though for sure and pretty stoked about that too!
Andrew you are a marketing genius and aside from the hours you pour into all the craftmanship you still make it look like the average Joe can do it. Glad to know the market was a success for you both. I was not sure how your price points were destined to work out but I am sure you carefully take into consideration the history and audience of the market you plan to exhibit at. Could you expand on that piece of the puzzle? I am an early bird kinda guy so the tamper would certainly make an awesome and daily piece of my morning coffee ritual - would love to have that. Thank you for sharing all your carefully produced vides, I really want to make that kayak!
oooh cheers roberto! mega appreciate this! sooo i kinda love staying small and making my stuff approachable for the community. i only get a chance to make soo much, so being able to share it with folks means everything to me :) you're in the running for the tamp!
Became a huge fan after seeing one of your incredible paddles. Wish I lived closer, I would have loved to have gone to that show. Glad it was a success for you. Look forward to more videos.
thanks soo much kimberly! srsly means a lot! where in the world are you located?
@@AndrewSzeto Welland, Ontario. Just far enough to talk myself out of driving to Ottawa. Lol
@@kimberlylavalle975 oooh yah! i've done some coast guard work around there! close enough to ship a paddle tho! haha you're in the running for it!
Asian excellence! I would love the knife. As an aspiring chef I would use the heck out of it. Thanks for the content first and foremost. One of the most real and entertaining channels.
i got a lot of work to do still (wrt having more enaging content), but hopefully inching in the right direction. thanks soo much jimmy!
This was a really fun video and I enjoyed seeing you break down the time, cost and profit. I'd hang up your paddle on the wall next to a Make With Miles kumiko paddle for a super maker paddle display.
ooooh WHAT!!!! i wanted one of those miles paddles!
The paddle would be so sweet with my canoe. We need another for our daughter to use!
cheers bananas rock! haha
Love the channel! I fell in love with your paddles when you were first featured in Paddle Magazine. I've had one on my Christmas list every year but my partner hasn't yet taken the hint! I'm in Northern Ontario and love paddling the local rivers (done a few vids of my own on here). I'd so much love to sport a re-purposed paddle on my trips. Keep up the good work!
wonderful, hope you enjoy the process too. :) Me I waiting your paddle work shop, so I can also enjoy your company
yussss! gonna have to happen soon isabelle!
Love this and love to see makers making a good hourly wage for their work. Wish I was still living in Ottawa and could have attended that craft show. My kitchen knife could be retired, knives deserve to live out in the open, so I like when things aren't just functional but also aesthetic as heck.
cheers brook! you're in the running!
Awesome video. Would pass on the coffee tamper to a Java nut here in the uk
Awesome video man! Good to see you did so well. I would love a paddle so that one day I could finally go paddling with you 🤣🤣

Great break down video. I really enjoyed this as I am a skateboard recycler as well. I would be happy with anything but specifically a paddle to display. Keep on the good work and videos for motivation.
cheeers!!
I would take that paddle to Algonquin for a backcountry trip, for sure! 🙌
ayee cheers ryan!
Man that knife would slice and dice (or 'slay' as the youngsters say??) some veggies in our kitchen or make a great gift for relatives that just got their first place. Awesome work as always! -fellow Andrew
haha cheers andrew! hope you have a great weekend!
Inspiring as always dude. Would love the paddle or knife, have been saving up to buying one from you for a while now(still will!). It’d go great with the outdoors/watershed theme of our living room haha

Great stuff as always! I try to buy the majority of my yearly gifts at craft shows to support local when I can. The paddles look amazing! I would give it to an elderly neighbor for display. He can't paddle any more but has definitely spent his fair share in a canoe. Keep up the great work!
oooh that speaks to me! thanks soo much for checking everything out! you're in the running!
That paddle would be amazing for our annual trip to Algonquin park.
oooweee! that would be a fun one! I have taken mine out there a few times!
Definitely the knife it would travel with me in my car throughout my adventure across BC and would help me make the best by the campfire meals :)
oooh ya that would be dreamy :)
Good job brah! 🛹

All those items are pretty awesome. It's the skateboard thing that makes them most interesting. I'd love that paddle, as my wife loves paddles. She has a couple plain ones from antique stores. But, nothing like yours. She would love it!!! As for me, I like that you show us your cost and profit. Thanks for all your videos.

I've been watching your videos from the jump! Awesome to see things are going well for you. My wife and I are paddlers and she really deserves such a beautiful gift, I'd like to put my hat in the paddle race so to speak. In fact I've always wanted to do the 24hr canoe race North of Algonquin, have you heard of it? Might be a perfect place for such a paddle. Best to you and yours around the holidays!
WHOOOA that race sounds epic! It is a bit heavy and I think a less decorative style paddle would probably be better for that haha, but you're in the running for sure! can't thank you enough for the support!
My dude! Epic video. I would love the knife. It would be a great gift for my dad at his cabin. No more cheap knives

Andrew you’re a beaut! I got immensely inspired by the A-frame you built and I’ll be building my own this spring on the west coast of Canada 🏄♂️
Personally, that knife stands out to me. I’ve recently begun partnering with a local Italian deli in Victoria BC to cook huge pots of 🤌🏻 pasta and dishing it out at woman’s shelters and other do good community organizations around town.
