How Skateboards Become $400 Bowls | World Wide Waste | Business Insider
As a construction worker in the US, it blows my mind how much timber gets tossed. I try to grab what I can use and use it to repair or build things.
Its wood, it will rot and nourish the earth. Only thing being thrown away is money.
@@Delt4_Cr4wfish that the point bro. I cant affor proper lumber. I've made shelves and all sorts if things with it
@@idkjustleavemebeplease those companies want to though it away thats there problem.
Good for you! And thanks - for not letting useable stuff go to waste.
Ya it’s unreal. I worked at a lumber yard. And same thing. Big jobs would finish and materials would get returned and most just gets tossed…it’s a shame.
Came expecting a bowl for skateboards to ride. Interesting about the wastage. I have all my boards and some are pretty beat up but there's history there.
sometimes the stickers alone tell a story
@@shakulaka fax
I came hoping for a weed bowl haha 🤣
that bowl should be built ong , I have a few spare alr snapped
I've kept mine for years, I figure one of these days I'm going to make shelves with them.
Man, Calgary has companies like Eavor that are turning old oil wells into geothermal energy generating systems. Some coverage for them would be good to see.
Oil wells from the 70’s, are filled with oil again.
Oil is not made from decomposing bones
@@kylefenrick9168 what does this have to do with that? also the oil wells in calgary aren't being refilled so maybe the oil had a service outage
@@i_love_games110 psychological warfare comes in many forms.
I’d be more worried about the hydrochloric acid, being pumped into the ground.
@@kylefenrick9168 that doesn't answer what your original reply has to do with Locutus's comment
@@i_love_games110 conversion is not necessary for providing fuel with proper rotation of well use.
With that said, it is good to be switching from a fuel source which causes health issue due to exhaust and extraction(pollution from production runoff), to a less invasive and destructive approach.
"About four times the price of a normal skateboard..."
*laughs nervously looking at my beat up skateboards.*
What's more concerning is the price of decks these days. Lol
Those earrings look way better than anything I'd expect from being made out of busted skateboards. Hats off to these guys. Although, I will agree with what others have said about the price tag for the bowl.
Americans will pay whatever you want if you sell if from a famous enough Instagram account.
That’s the thing, you aren’t buying a bowl to eat out of, it’s an art piece for those willing to pay for it
The people complaining about the price aren't going to buy it so they're not the market demographic. It isn't a mass produced item so you're paying for a skilled craftsman's time, not some assembly line product.
@@CRneu Still not worth 400$, Art that's expensive like that is because they're somebody, these aren't artists they're carpenters taking advantage of stupid people. The stuff they make looks really nice but if I had to guess based upon the bowl, their cabinet is probably 20,000$
@Chad Neu "the people complaining about the price aren't going to buy it" Duh. That's their point. However your point is nonsense. There is a lot of potential profit loss for them. The likely problem is their production can't charge less as is. But it's not like they're hand crafting the bowls from carefully selected hardwood. It's machined machined machined.
they should make a 60’s- 70’s style skate deck out of the recycled boards! they were simple solid boards, it would be so interesting to see that solid deck shape with those crazy layers!
though these colours might look nice and the boards are very strong the way they are used in skateboards, if you try to flip the gradiant you will end up with a board that can be broken by hand very easily. so the look would be nice but theres no strength in them this way
Love the store called “Nine Times” a Ferris Bueller reference to how many times he’s missed school! Love it
A friend has been doing it for years but he gets some of his boards from pro's so when you get your product (jewelry for example) it comes with a note saying who's board it was!
that's so awesome !
Incredible experience for the new owner!
That’s so sweet, love all the colors together, and you get a cool story to go along with your new table.
$400 for a bowl is insane- sincerely a lifelong skater
A $400 bowl???? The idea of reusing old boards is great, but for that price im surprised they sell any at all lol
$400 isn't a lot when you factor in the time, know how, resources, etc. This isn't an assembly line product. Each bowl is a unique piece of functional art that's of high quality. They make a limited number(likely cuz it creates a lot of byproduct) so the price reflects that.
Their most expensive bowl is $365. Some around $140.
I seen these bowls around Calgary buy I never actually knew this was the process or where they came from.
Over the past 5-10 years there's been so much market growth and creativity in this city, it's nice to see.
Whether your in Kensington, Inglewood or downtown on 17th more and more shops like this open up.
That 400 dollar bowl better come with 385 dollars inside!
Bag of weed ??
Cool project, but I can't imagine wanting to play $400 dollars for one, that's outrageous
It’s because of the process and how much time the brothers spend on making the product. If it was on a factory line, I’d agree with you; $400 for a machine made object is nuts; but it’s man made so that’s why the price is so high. Plus supply and demand also play a huge role in how much the product is sold.
But it’s not worth it
Yeah its man made but it doesn’t really make it worth $400
@@justajojofan7715 well I just think it’s personal opinion! ☺️
@@justajojofan7715 if people are buying them for $400, they’re worth $400
That’s how markets work
I dont think i have ever seen an episode of recycling that isnt a huge gimmick.
I’ve watched this ep.. and I agree with you, same here.
Thats because even governing bodies treat it as a joke... Since the companies making the waste pays them to not care. At least these creators dedicated themselves to reusing. It's not in mosts price range, doesn't mean it isn't that valuable.
I agree, but the first company isn't making large quantities of common items, whereas the second one makes screwdrivers and other valuable and common goods so I think they should be quite cheap. you also have to factor in that they have to collect the boards themselves in small amounts.
@@Matthew-kc2dh you can pay $5 for shoes or $5000 for shoes. The more expensive pair can be made worse or they could even be the same shoes. With this concept in mind, I fail to see your point.
@@hydroxyl5130 I should've worded it much better the 2nd "valuable" is meant in terms of usefulness, a screwdriver and the other products the second company produce are arguably more useful and so should be cheaper than the 1st company's "art work" style pieces
This is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen as a skateboarder and an artist. Every piece is unique in color variation and I’m sure every deck has its own backstory of how it got snapped.

400 dollar for a bowl? Congratulations, you are tge salesman of the year! :)
Precious plastic will be very interesting for a video. Dave Haken spent years on a big mission to fight plastic pollution
that would be cool if all skateshops had return policies so boards could be used like this
This recycled skateboard wood is amazing, a lot of work. I’ve seen a guy do similar with coloured pencils and that looks great too.
The versatility is incredible. Screw driver handles, jewellery it all looks fantastic. Nice to see the mrs getting into it too!
They use fine, usable coloured pencils and waste it for acrylic art. It's not recycling. This is different from that.

400. Holy moly. Why are people paying that kind of money for a bowl
Because a bowl is worth $50 max... Art is "priceless"
Agreed. But I guess when you got money to blow you might as well
You jealous because you're poor with no taste?😢
Because people are dumb, spending that amount of money on broken wood that was repurposed to a bowl definitely not worth that much.

Hats off to them for their creative idea and also making an effort to reduce the amount of trash
I'm surprised that they apparently actually manage to sell enough of that stuff at high enough prices to justify the very substantial amount of work. good for them. and in case it wasn't just for the camera, props for the thorough use of the respirator! :)
This is amazing! Love the up-cycling and creativity. Keep it up!
Skateboarding and art arent too far apart. This is quite the creative combination! And eco-friendly as a plus! Great work guys
Not sure you know what eco friendly means...
eco friendy ? with all that glue and remember these boards used to have a grip tape that means a lot of aluminum oxide (abrasive that I wont put in my stomach while thinking "oh I am so green and eco friendly"
One of the best recycling methods for boards and love the designs it ends up as a result
Why do people even need those bowls? Will normal bowls not do?
Solving problems created by consumerism with more consumerism is not gonna work.
@@mma8208 its more of the creative aspect of it its not something id likely buy rather id make one if I was that interested but will say a proper lathe and proper tools isnt that cheap either unless you know people as i do with these machines but i get your point a bowl is a bowl 🥣 sometimes we eat from bowls others smoke from them 😆
@@mma8208 handcrafted items that require two weeks of labor on up-cycled trash do not represent "consumerism"... That's the antithesis of consumerism. You're paying the REAL COST of a product, not the deflated cost of mass production. It's reducing the amount of waste, not increasing it. These bowls are better because regular bowls, a product of consumerism, ignore the environmental cost of their production. You pay $5, the landfill, plastic waste, and pollution make up the other $350.
It means consumers really get to see what the normal things in their life cost, not the very cheap cost of environmentally devastating mass production.
@@avva4090 the real cost isn't 400$. Doesn't take two weeks to make. You've failed withing your own argument. Good job
@@avva4090 and you pay 400 dollar for a bowl made with glue basically what an ignorant , enjoy your healthy clever lifestyle
Very good case of recycling. Don't know if they are getting those boards for free, or pay for them, but $400 is a really expensive, and I personally would've paid maybe $40.
Woodworking takes time, skill, materials and tools all of which need to be compensated for. For a hand turned bowl, $400 is not an insane price, especially considering the unique look and story behind it. You might not be willing to pay for it, but there are people who will. Beyond that they are taking a "waste" product and removing it from the waste stream.
@RJDA The free wood?
remember when my family moved into a new construction community, me and my dad would always go 'dumpster diving' into the containers of waste material the ammount of perfectly good amazing condition pipes and wood we found is crazy.
Everything about this is just amazing.
$400 for a bowl made of beaten up skateboards they got for free? Nope, straight scam.
I totally agree, they value their work a bit too much.
I dont know, if you look at how long it takes, he's only asking for what $10-$15/hr? Thats really not unreasonable.
@droods yeah but that doest include acquiring the boards, removing the grip tape, sanding down the boards, cutting them down, then gluing them into whatever base shape you need.
$400 for a bowl? bruh that's even expensive than a dutch oven cast iron 😂
Yeah, it’s definitely not worth the price in my eyes

Honestly a brilliant idea. The only pushback would be whether it is sanitary. Im talking abt potential customers who are not aware of the process and only see it as board to bowl.
I expect the bowls are coated in some sort of resin so there shouldnt be an issue with the grime from the boards touching anything that goes in the bowl

Upscale takes 15 days, glue, electricity, labour, sold to insta generation, who won't plant a tree but want to feel good on their purchase *And its sold for 4 times the cost of the board*
I think you’ve been misinformed by opinions and not facts. It’s well documented in studies that the younger generations (millennials, Gen Z) are the most environmentally conscious and giving generation to date. Obviously that’s a huge brush to paint all of them with so there’s going to be varieties of all types but take heart in knowing the next generation is doing a little better than us and the next one after them will do a little better yet. 🙂
The "insta generation" are going to be the ones hopefully pulling us out of this tailspin. The boomer style of filing landfills and oceanic garbage patches has done serious damage.
Are you from that generation that majorly fucked up the planet in the first place?
Regular bowl: 15$
Their bowl: 400$
“Why is no one buying recycled stuff!?!?”
I’m guessing the added labor to recreate it raises the profit margin. Seems odd though that it would be so expensive especially when it’s literally donated to them. I doubt they buy the broken decks from previous owners. I mean you still get money back when you recycle aluminum.
You can’t get a handcrafted wood bowl for 15$

I'd love to see how industry recycles lithium batteries. I know it's a relatively new industry but with electric cars growing I wonder if there will be resource shortages soon.
It’s simple. They don’t… they also get all the electricity for charging those car batteries from coal, gas or petrol. Electric cars, at the moment are far from being good for the environment.

Let's not forget that the biggest payouts in the markets don't come from great performances but rather it's great promotions. Stay invested, diversification for streams of incomes is very important.
Starting early is the best way of getting ahead to build wealth , investing remains a priority. I learnt from my last year's experience , I am able to build a suitable life because I invested early and ahead this time.
