@Appalachia's Homestead with Patara I've watched a lot of videos on homesteading and this is the best, most thorough how to of all the videos. I wanted to do water glassing eggs and have watched several videos on how to. If I hadn't watched your video, I would have failed again in preserving eggs. Tried to freeze eggs but haven't been successful so switching to water glassing eggs. But I don't have chickens and can't get farm fresh eggs so water glassing is on hold. Thanks for taking the time to put out videos and sharing your life and knowledge with us. Okay, I'm ready for the next video lesson on anything to do with homesteading.
When I freeze eggs, I break them into a bowl, whisk together, then pour into breast milk bags. Then when I want to defrost, I just stand them in the fridge until thawed, then use. I can get 5 eggs into a breast milk bag
I've watched a number of glassing videos, but only learned from Patara the time limits on the process. I just started feeding my neighbor's cat and chickens while they are on vacation for a few days. The eggs that I am collecting are mine to keep and I wanted to do glassing, but didn't know how long I have to get the water and pickling from the store after work. These little facts are SO helpful. I have to share this with people who understand, my local Amish and Mennonite bulk food stores are out of wheat berries and can’t get any more. The shortages became real to me this weekend. I had a moment of panic thinking about people, especially my children going hungry. Everybody, keep doing what you’re doing! Please, don’t stop!
Thank you for the heads up Kate. This is really serious. Typically they are the producers of food and have enough to sell. Now if they don't have any that is alarming. Like Patera said farmers and growers will need to pull back to survive. The Mennonites are no exception.
@@inklingduckling7087 You’re welcome. I’m glad I can share with people who understand the implications of this. The Amish bulk food store owner told me maybe six weeks ago that her suppliers are only growing half the oats they usually do this year. It is very, very serious.
My first water glassing attempt was with a 2 gallon pail. I got up to 83 eggs in that pail and thought no way do I want to move that around. Since that pail, I now use 1 gallon mason jars. Definitely easier to move and like you say that’s a whole lot of eggs to waste if something goes wrong. Great video! Thanks for sharing
I love water glassing eggs! I would rather use the glass jars than a plastic container because I can watch the eggs that way! I check them daily and if I find one that ends up cracking I can quickly put the eggs in a fresh water mixture thereby not losing the entire jar. I used plastic buckets in the past and it was difficult to know if an egg went bad. Anyway, thanks for all that you do!

@@appalachiashomesteadwithpatara Here is why watetglassing isn't safe=in the 1800's we thought salmonella only grew on the outside of the egg but we discovered it grows on the inside too. The worst part is that farm fresh eggs have salmonella just as much if not more than store bought eggs. DON'T DO THIS PEOPLE.
I've been preserving my eggs this way for a couple of years now and love this method, no issues !! Good to always have fresh farm eggs all year round ! Thanks for sharing this.
I use another method, I seal the permeable shell with cheap Luanna coconut oil, return them to saved egg cartons, and store them in my cool basement pantry. I turn the cartons every month, and supposedly they will last 6-9 months. We try to finish each batch in 6 months. If an egg has even a small crack, it will rot.

Great video! I recommend using glass mayonnaise jars, relish jars, olive jars, etc. They’re free. They’re small. And if an egg breaks or gets ruined, you’ve only lost a handful of eggs. ❤️
Every spring, I get a 5# bag of organic taters from the health food store. If they've already sprouted, they are marked way down. I put them in a box top, spread out, in a dark cabinet. I had enough to plant 10 Ikea bags full and I can't keep ahead of them. My goal is 100# or better, which would cost $160+ and I only spent $2.99 on the taters. I had the bags and our own compost. I'm tickled pink.
I think I also would make a piece of painters tape going down the side of jar, to number the eggs in jar/bucket. Then I could check off as I used the eggs. I would then always know the amount of eggs left in bucket.
@@buckleymanor4658 I would say yes. Ask at your closest grocery store bakery or deli for empty frosting buckets. That is similar to what Patera was using. Often you can get them for free because they would just be throwing them out. Or you could arrange to trade some eggs for buckets. ;)

Just a note on the bucket potatoes.....I planted mine with about 3 inches of dirt and then filled the bucket to about 1 inch of the top. They grew all the way thru and sprouted at about the same time as those I planted in the ground.
This is awesome. Thank you for the instruction to do this. I do apply the theory of smaller batches to protect larger food stores to other things as well. (Example: we buy 25 pound bags of sugar. What's in the bag with it? All kinds of things do travel in the packaging, things that I don't want in my house. We have no way of knowing what environment the food we bring home was actually exposed to.) That's my 2 cents worth.
Up at 4 am, have to feed one calf (Angus) that was a twin that the cow left behind. Seems to happen every year, but blessed hubby find them each time. Regarding water glassing: Yes, the smaller container works best and less loss should something happen!

I have very strong memories of my Nana at the stove all day on her day where she would pickle and can her eggs. She lived with us growing up. All of us would stay outside that entire day to avoid the smell lol.
I water glassed eggs and they lasted 15 months with no problem. Used the last of them this winter when my layers took their winter vacation ;) I used 5 gallon buckets only because that's what I had on hand. Only filled them half full with eggs because I was concerned about the weight. Think I need one of those purdy gallon jars on my counter :D Thank you and hope you had a wonderful Mother's Day.

The eggs will always move around Grandma told me that back in the 1950's I know I am OLD!!! I go with 12 months for myself with eggs from a farm that I have been buying from know the chickens well THEIR SO SWEET !!! Some have babies now!!!

Thanks for this great info, I now know that the farm fresh eggs that are a week old are no good for this as I had to wait on the lime to be delivered. After losing sticky notes on other projects, I started using painters green tape. Even use it on my spice jars - it's everywhere lol 🙂
Ohh giiirl I forgot about the strawberries in the pool. I actually bought the pool for corn "bags"! So guess I better go get another pool for the strawberry roots I got🤦🤦. My husband put me another raised bed in that would probably be perfect for the berries but am thinking of doing cucumbers in it because it's up against our carport but there's just enough room for me to slide a piece of old lattice in there for climbing plants👍. I've gotten WAY more ambitious with my gardening this year...and will be my first time wet canning when things start coming in because the freezers are full!! My spare room in the back of the house AND on the back side of the house (doesn't get as much sun heat) is my "pantry". We cleared out some stuff this week so another shelving unit can be added for storage👍..looks like DG in there😄

I redid my eggs today with float test. And clean water and fresh lime. These eggs are almost two yrs in 1 gal jar. I don't know how to post a pic. But I only had 4 eggs just starting to tip up a fraction, so I tossed them.

Loved your informative video on water glassing eggs. We took notes. We have one question: Once the initial stirring of the compound is done and eggs are being placed in the container... does the settling of the lime diminish the water-glassing quality of the lime-water solution. (i.e. -- does the water still have enough lime in it to protect the eggs?)
It’s super hard to get the eggs point down, especially the bottom. I am using 1/2 gallon ball jars which is enough for me to lift. Thank you for all the info you give here! I mix the lime and water in one jar, start my bottom layer of eggs in the empty jar and pour enough to cover them without making them move from their position. I then shake the remaining water/lime and fill the egg jar almost to the brim. All dated with a marker because with my luck the sticky notes will somehow go missing lol
My water glass eggs were done just like yours. The last of them were just over 8 months old and they were watery. They were good enough for baking and scrambled.
OMG! Girl!!! I just made 3, 1/2 gallon of those eggs….BEFORE I watched your video 😂 how awesome!!! I have done this in the past & ate the eggs AFTER 6 months, they taste the same!!! I love farm fresh eggs!
Thank you for this. I did the 5 gallon bucket last year, I had 1 egg crack and I tossed the whole batch. So I ordered 1 gallon jars for this year. Wish I had seen this last year.
I use the one gallon jars myself, I agree that anything larger can get very heavy and more prone to an accident. We like to leave a gallon jar on the counter and just grab what we need, the rest stay in the basement.

Kate Rich me too. It’s been hit or miss ordering online, mostly missing. I haven’t been to the amish market in a couple of weeks near me.

Mineral oil works well too...a way to make store bought eggs last longer. Easy to research...

Hi Patara . You can use painters tape to mark your jars. It’s stays on very well and you can remove it very easily!

I'm so on board with using Glass or Smaller containers my Great Aunt and my Mom (when she was young 1923+) used to use ceramic crocks .

I do mineral oil farm fresh eggs. Anyway you can preserve food is great. Stack it to the ceiling with what is coming.

I got swimming pools at tractor supply at the end of the season . Under 2 dollars apiece . They work great for squash!

Did a bunch more today. This is year 6 doing this and it works great. I only have a small backyard flock but put up a lot of them.

My water glass eggs were done just like yours. The last of them were just over 8 months old and they were watery. They were good enough for baking and scrambled.

Thank you for this. I did the 5 gallon bucket last year, I had 1 egg crack and I tossed the whole batch. So I ordered 1 gallon jars for this year. Wish I had seen this last year.
I use the one gallon jars myself, I agree that anything larger can get very heavy and more prone to an accident. We like to leave a gallon jar on the counter and just grab what we need, the rest stay in the basement.
