    I enjoyed watching the 383 disassembly. For the mileage Betsy has on her, the engine was in pretty good condition internally. She has the all the typical problems associated with a high mileage engine. I have seen some lower mileage 383's that were in much worse condition. Betsy will be better than new after Nick works his magic on her. Then she will be ready for another 200,000+ miles.

    Hi Nick, thanks. Just a note from a machinist's perspective - the ridge reamer makes centering most cylinder boring bars less accurate, as the boring bar locating is best if they locate center off the top of the cylinder bore (to find the location of the original factory machined cylinder centerline). Use of a ridge reamer removes the ability to accurately center to the factory original bore center. The boring bar then only registers to the worn cylinder surface, and the wear usually is skewed off the original center a few thou. One of the least appreciated things home engine builders could do was bring us a block that was ridge reamed. Sometimes the reamer would even put a taper at the top of the cylinder that made boring the block sketchy and time consuming at best. That messes up accurately milling the required deck height, and can make the new cylinder bores out of alignment with the crank centerline. When we disassembled a worn engine ourselves, we would slam the pistons out without ever using a reamer, even if it meant breaking the piston lands and rings. If there was a lot of ridge and even slamming the pistons didn't work, we would carefully chamfer the ridge a little with either emery cartridge rolls or a rotary file, making sure to leave as much of the original cylinder bore surface as possible to find the cylinder center for the boring bar. Then slam the pistons out.

    I picked that intake up for $20 at a swap meet. Had plans to put it on the 361 in my 61’ Chrysler Windsor to replace the stock 2bbl cast iron brick on top. Luke needed a intake for Betsy as the stock had a crack or something and it was just sitting on my shelf at the time. Was only ever a temporary replacement. Thanks again Nick for all your doing and have done for Big Easy. He’s had a rough go the last while. If nothing else this should bring a big smile to his face.

    When I was a little bitty kid the local Palestine, Texas police had 383 magnum Road Runners in metallic blue with dog dish hub caps. I will never forget standing on the side walk down town one day with my older brother when an officer got a call of some kind. He fired that thing up and took off right in front of us smoking the tires. My ears rung for an hour it was so loud. That has made a long lasting impression on me and one of my earliest memories. I knew right then that I was going to grow up and become a gear head, LOL.
    Ok so my question is what were the significant differences between a plain old 383 and the 383 Magnum engines? I can't really find a good write up on the net that cover the Magnum really well.

I like the physical work out with tools since I dont have a gym membership. 3 Lbs hammer and breaker bar and racheting breaker bar will give your upper body a good workout 💪. I use factory nuts and bolts but some times I like to upgrade to grade 8 with the cadium plating aka anti rust coating . it helps dress an engine up to. ive had good luck so far knock on wood when I heat up the nut and bolts with a hand held propane bottle torch then while the fastener is hot I spray on the PB blaster . the causes the penatrating oil to soak in before it cools

And I also learned something new, something surprising - Nick didn't have a ridge reamer handy. (Maybe he did, but just ran out of time for this video.) The 1968 and 1969 4 barrel 383 engines came with a above deck pistons. The 2 barrel 383's had lower compression. With the 1968 906 heads having new ports based on the 1967 440 915 heads, both 383 2 barrel and 4 barrel engines got matching high rise intakes. The high performance 383's got the tri-metal rod bearings from the high performance 440, but came with standard duty main bearings.

      The pistons on my 68 h-code 383 come right up to the deck...dead nuts....and on all 8 pistons. I'd heard also that they are a bit prone out of the deck but not on my engine. The engine is all original from Trenton plant, built in 8/1967. You are right about rod bearings, they are all trimetal like the 440's on the rods.

    For many years iv been using Delo400 10/40 heavy truck oil in my cars and trks, i find it keeps the engine much cleaner inside than standered oil, if can keep a cummins 400 big cam clean inside for half a million miles its good enough for my engines.

      It (using diesel oil in a gas engine) doesn't work so well in cold weather, though. Fine in summer for many (but not all) low RPM gas engines. There is so many cleaning additives in diesel oil that it effectively super-cleans the insides of a gas engine in warm temperatures. The extra "weight" (viscosity) of diesel oil, even when it is hot, also seals rings and valves better, so there is less blow by and oil consumption in a worn engine, too. But colder than 10 Celsius or 40 Fahrenheit, and its time to run oil for gasoline engines again.

Engine had great maintenance over the 50+ years. I didnt look at any of the rod bearings but my cam bearings looked like they were brand new. There's alot to be said for frequent oil changes and using zinc treatment with modern day oils.

    Great video. I appreciated the explanation of head markings on bolts and what they mean in terms of grade. Not many people know that and where engine and chassis work is concerned, the quality of bolts used is important. There are certainly a lot of junk fasteners out there, especially at the local hardware store. The Dyno Room looks nice with the new paint.

    • @mikepotter6426
      @mikepotter6426 3 роки тому +1

      I’m not sure the word quality applies. What I mean is, grade 5 is made for grade 5 work loads. Grade 8 made for grade 8, et al. I believe a better, or more descriptive term would be application. We buy engine bolts from the engine maker per part number. Kimball Midwest supplies our non engine bolts. Each Kimball bolt is stamped made in U.S.A. No question fasteners are super critical and so overlooked.

    This is pretty exciting because I'm watching it on the day it was posted. Actually 10:45 in the evening and already 20K views, AWESOME! I'm wondering if this engine happened to go down the assembly line close to the one that ended up in my 68 Charger.
    That engine lasted for the 190000+ miles because he changed the oil. I say that judging by how clean the rocker arms were. I would even guess he used synthetic oil at least the last few years of use.
    I've seen engines that were just loaded with crud around the rocker arms.
    That timing chain was stretched so far I'm betting the cam was running about one half tooth later than the crankshaft. And then we find all the pieces of the timing gear in the bottom where they are helping any crud collect. That is why it is important to drain oil when it is hot and the vehicle is tilted so the drain hole is downhill. Some of those pieces get carried out with the oil.
    I'll be anxiously watching for Betsy's Beast part 2
