I saw it as you moved it, there was a small piece of gasket dangling off the manifold. The gaskets had apparently disintegrated. As for how long ago, I couldn't say. From the rockers alone this looks like a home made Powernation special.

My father was an aircraft engineer and mechanic that taught repair of military aircraft to people in other countries (we are americans) He taught me mechanics. Ingrained in me to read the manuals, use proper tourque and tourque sequence. Use proper sealant in appropriate ammounts when needed. Know that engineers designed it a certain way, for a certain reason. Those lessons served me well in a previous carrer as a line mechanic for Mercedes Benz in the 80s and 90s.
I took that knowledge and moved to a career in micro mechanics and have never looked back. Dads no longer with us but his legacy lives on through myself and my nephew. Whenever I work on a project I remember his many words of advice.

Nice of you to mention Grand Spaulding Dodge. Back in the late 60's & early 70's we were a couple of backyard mechanics running a '65 Dodge Coronet and trying to run with the big dogs at the Chicago-land tracks. We would look for deals (handouts) wherever we could find them. Mr. Norm and his bunch down on Grand Ave would let us dig through their 'extras' and take-off parts - prices were way more reasonable than we had a right to dream. Norm Kraus was always there with a tip or encouraging words. Seems like they always had dozens of big blocks just waiting to get stuffed into some unsuspecting Dodge Dart.
Thanks for keeping the legends on the road.

Would definitely like to see an assembly video that’s as detailed as this one.
Sadly that motor was probably done years ago by someone with little experience and definitely no eye for detail.
It probably ran worse after it was “rebuilt “.

The odd intake bolt and stud combinations could indicate attempts to deal with persistent vacuum or oil leaks.
Hopefully for the rebuild it wasn’t done to get past stripped threads to get to a few good ones deeper in the tapped holes.
Helicoils are great for a fix as long as there’s enough surrounding material on coolant, oil and air passages. Guys will do desperate things to try and save a vintage part, best take it to someone like Nick who knows all the tricks.

In the mid 80's I worked at a garage with an older mechanic. His first name was Raymond. Raymond had several 5 gallon buckets of bolts and screws. When Raymond tore something apart and put it back together he would dump a bucket out and use what ever worked. It looks like Raymond worked on the 6 pack 440 engine. The plus side to Raymond's buckets were.....If you lost a bolt or screw you just went over and asked Raymond if you could look in his bucket for the missing part. Saved my butt several times.

The only shouldered bolts with a protruding stud and nut I have seen from the factory was on Pontiac engines Nick. 3/8" for the front A/C bracket and throttle bracket, and 1/2" on the head for the rear A/C bracket and three on the left head for the heated air plate and for the negative battery cable. I have always been a stickler about proper fasteners too. The 'H' head bolts x12 should be on the carbs as you already know. Sadly, there is a lot of butchers out there that do not know (or care) about details. Thanks for your continued dedication to the hobby and for doing things the right way!

Thank you Nick for being picky. The biggest project I ever did was change the 2 barrel intake manifold on my 1959 Ford to a 4 barrel. I got lucky, my dad said the car he and mum bought, in Soo, Ontario, was a 352ci actually it was a 332ci and he(dad) wondered why parts didn't fit. I was lucky the block was the same except for the exhaust manifolds.

When you were showing the TDC and #1 piston it reminded me of a situation in the late 70's. A bunch of friends were trying to re-time a 318 in a dodge dart after taking out the distributor. I walked up and they said it wouldnt start, I said is the rotor pointing to the #1 cylinder in the dist cap? they said no its pointing to the actual #1 cylinder in the block! I said thats wrong and they argued w me for 10 minutes. Finally they did it my way and it fired right up! The silence was deafening after that!

I believe the correct intake in 1969 was the same as the block, cast iron that was forged & it weighted a ton. Aluminum intakes now days are easy to work with because they are light weight to handle, but after time they warp from the heat of the engine. A lot of work went into the parts back than because they had to be cleaned up prior to assembly. Lots of grinding to clean up the edges.

BUT, it's not difficult or time consuming to pop the valve covers and thus reveal shiny performance lifters, after all, if one were looking to buy a muscle car with a supposedly 'hot' build the very least I'd expect the prospective buyer to do would be to pop a valve cover. I have done in the past. The oversize fuel delivery system also overkill and fitted to impress. So it looks like it says GT on the fender or is that a reflection from something else? Is this a 390 car or a big block? I love Cougars, they have great body lines.

    Giasou Nikola,
It is Friday night & finally I get a chance to put my feet up & enjoy your video uninterrupted from start to finish.
    All I can say
" IT IS ABOUT TIME YOU BLOW YOUR OWN TRUMPET "
Now I am speaking on behalf of the Roadrunner. Look at the way the beautiful Roadrunner is looking at you with a tear in its eye. That tear is a tear of joy & love. The Roadrunner had heard about Nick Garage from other Mopar Muscle Car & now it cannot believe its luck, I have finally made it to Heaven, that is Mopar heaven where Mopar Guru Mechanic Nikola knows how to rebuild me probably & back to factory specifications.
I am worthy, I am worthy, yes you are
    you beautiful Roadrunner.
Now to the Malaka with a Diploma who should be charged with
Cruelty to Roadrunner's, hang your head in shame.
The Roadrunner couldn't be in better & safer hands & it is catching up with a couple of its cousin's remembering the good old day's.
If the Roadrunner can talk, this is what it would say to us.
" Thank you for bringing me to Nick's Garage "

Nick, pay close attention to the pressure plate for the vibration ! Had 2 springs go soft in a 3600 pound Hay's P plate and it shook my teeth out ! There was nothing else found wrong in anything else as I did a complete tear down and checked balance of everything in the power train ( even the driveshaft ! ) Nothing but the plate was found to be out of balance or alignment. Sent the plate back to Hay's and they found the problem and rebuilt the pressure plate & disk. It ran perfect after that .

@@nickpanaritis4122 Good ! found the problem. Another issue I learned was don't ever surface a standard shift flywheel on one of them magnet flywheel grinder machines !!!! . No sir , Put the flywheel in a 3 jaw metal engine lathe and re cut it on a metal Lathe after you check it for run out as you can get a much courser finish on a big swing engine lathe for better clutch engagement and less heat build up ! ( hot spots or cracks on the flywheel ) as with them magnet flywheel grinders, they are very questionable as to if they take the same amount off all sides of the flywheel and the finish is way to slick, plus we have no way to know for sure if it took the same amount off all sides of the flywheel, witch again can shake your teeth out ! because of out of balance. ( been there ) Sometimes things are not as easy as we think ! A good old school Machinist is always our friend ! P/S, nice to find a man that does just about everything I do the same way ! as all my stuff seems to holds up pretty well to ! wink wink !

Good Morning Nick. A hot cup of coffee, and a tear down of an original A12 engine on Nick's Garage, no better way to start a Monday. I love watching Nick tear down an engine, and telling everyone what is wrong. I was surprised to see that the engine had stock rods and pistons, and that the rods were not 6-pack rods. I'm sure that in 1969 that the intake manifold came from the factory natural finish. I had a friend who bought an A12 Road Runner, and the intake was natural finish, and was from Edelbrock. Lots of things wrong in the valve train, but Dr. Nick will take care of all the issues, and Tim will have impressive engine under the hood when Nick is finished with the build. A very impressive video George, I loved the sound effects, and the music was great. A Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year to everyone on Nick's Garage.

I am hooked on your channel. I am the same age as you and grew up a motorhead. It is refreshing to see all of these cars from the 60's that we were all buying for such cheap prices. If only I had know what these cars would be worth today!! My girlfriend in 1980 bought a 1967 Corvette roadster for $3,800. She sold it in 1983 for $5,500 and she thought she got a great price. Of course based on the latest figures, $100 in 1983 is worth $267 dollars in 2021. So that $5,500 would cost about $15,000 in todays money. Good luck trying to find one at that price..

At 48:43 you can see that the cylinders were not burning evenly by the colour of the valves. 2 holes have white ashy valves and 2 have black sooty valves. My bet is one of the carbs is out of sync and the mixture imbalance is where the vibration came from.

That # 1 piston shows major oiling past the rings.
If you take 5 minutes and remove the oil pan before inverting the engine, that cup or so of remaining oil (and sludge, etc) in the pan doesn't pour back into the crankcase, so everything you remove thereafter isn't drenched with oil and dripping as you remove them.

E2: No problem, we’ll use these special rockers, use this flywheel off of a different 440, and take some weight off of one side of the harmonic balancer... it’ll be fun!

  • @michaelmartinez1345
    @michaelmartinez1345 3 роки тому +3

Great episode!!! My guess is the vibration could be caused by mis-matched parts.... A 4-bbl. Crank & rods with a 6-pack flywheel & harmonic ballancer, or maybe a 6-pack flywheel with 4-bbl crank, rods & harmonic balancer... The choice of forged piston is good for racing... The hypereutectic / stock cast aluminum pistons for street use is what I prefer... I know that Nick and his team will get this car running properly!!! That valve gear and ARP fasteners was a lot of money $pent for very few results, especially when using the 361, 383, 400 (shorter) pushrods.... The stock cam & valve gear will probably work very well in this engine...
