I would say go with the long block and save yourselves the headache and trouble of going through the old engine. In my opinion, that would be the better of the 2 options.
This is why I love this channel u guys live and function like most of us u get to it and fix it up and keep going it is real and down to earth unlike other channels where they are always buying new stuff .... keep up the good work it is awesome seeing family working together...

Not enough rain for a bumper crop, they got enough so far to do ok which would be better than last yr.
The truck looks to be in decent shape. With the prices of new or newer P/U's being insane, I would spend the money on a re-man engine.
It is far, far, far cheaper to repower and even replace the tranny, than it is to buy a used truck with 150,000 miles on it. As long as the vehicle has no rust issues, you can drive them forever. My 2007 Chevy 1/2 ton Classic has almost 180,000 miles on it and I have no plans to ever replace it. I've been offered almost as much money for it as I paid for it 12 years ago. It only had 55,000 miles on it then.

I think rebuilding it is not an option, takes too much time and outside help. Either a used one from a junk yard, or a reman (more expensive, but has a guarantee). A reman is what I would do. You guys are a hoot to watch!!
Scott, glad you stated that it had 80k on it before Bob bought it. That said, first is there a time/urgency to get the truck running? If so, I'd go with a "re-man" additionally, now that you have this all torn apart, I'd go thru it stem-to-stern and drive it. God Bless 👍😎✝

That's what I am doing with my 3.7L inline 5 cyl out of my 2012 Colorado. Also I gotta make the money to turn around and put it back into the motor.

With the busy time on the farm a reman may make sense with a warranty then you can get it in operation as there are so many other things to get ready for harvest and only so much time to do it. Good luck on your decision Bob
I think I would go with the reman. It comes with a warranty and will save y'all some time putting it back together
Poor Bob, that looks ling a sorry sight. For what your going to have to pay for it, a long block might be the best option. At least you should get some sort of warranty to get some peace of mind, but depends on who built it. With all the work that needs doing, just junk the block regardless.
That oil staining is from chronic blowby. That means rings left the party a long time ago, and that is through bad oil selection. Sorry for your loss. From UK.
That engine is toast. Try to get a used 06 2.8 or the 3.5 with computer. I trust you guys run full synthetic oil in your vehicles, if not I feel sorry. When you replace it note that the exhaust manifold cracks and separates from the cat, inspect that. Replace starter, it is horrible to replace when engine is in and replace both steering u joints unless they have no play and corrosion. Don't overlook the head. Valve seats were main problem, also broken keepers and the cam timing actuator. Good Luck!
Never mind what we think. All the old man needs is a bucket of ice cream. He has made up his mind and is going to rebuild the engine. He is counting on the boys to help him out.
A long block will probably end up cheaper, and it's done in a day or so, instead of months by the time you get all the stuff and machining, and assembly. Plus you have warranty.

oil failure, maybe not enough pressure. If you knew the engine builder? yes go with a reman. If you mic your parts see where you land on bore , it might be worth rebuilding. Block would need to washed/boiled and all oil passages cleared. Timing and funds determines the course
4BT Cummins & motor on forever
I'm in the auto parts business though for an Asian manufacturer. I wouldn't even think about going the rebuild it yourself or having a shop rebuild it for you route. Modern engines seem to have much tighter tolerances that require assembly to be perfect. It nearly never is on a rebuild. Either a new GM long block or a new truck is my suggestion. A junkyard motor can be a jewel or a turd. It's up to you if you want to gamble.

You guys amaze me. Anyway I think you are way ahead getting the long block then putting the components on it. What does a 4 cyl run? I think the time you guys spend having to send the engine out and buy the parts assembly and all that you just get a complete reman engine. Maybe even find a nice low mile engine that you could put in for even cheaper. I know you never know the condition when buying used but could be worth the gamble.
Part of me says to LS swap it. That will take some creative thinking though. If you pull the pistons you’ll likely find the oil control rings seized to the piston from carbon build up. These engines are notorious for burning oil. GM has a bulletin out stating 1 qt per 1000 miles is normal. If memory serves me correct if the head is warped more than .004 inch you’ll need a new head. The reason being is that the entire head warps and it causes the cams to bind. Even if you plane the head you’ll still have the issues with the cams binding which in turn will cause scoring in the cam journals and introduce metal into the oil. If this is the last truck that your dad plans on having then I would go with a GM crate engine. I would also go through the transmission if the fluid is really bad. There are some good aftermarket updates that will basically make the tranny bullet proof. Even if you do not go through the tranny at this time I would recommend installing an aftermarket cooler and change the fluid and filter to try to extend the life.
Start a go fund to help Bob to get a new truck. I will chip in some to help Bob out. You guys are down to earth people .I grew up on a farm in NC and i know how you struggle to make a profit. Maybe one day i can meet you in person.
I commend bob. I had an 06 Colorado with the 5 cylinder, the engine let go at 260,000 miles. I had done one of everything and two or three of some things. The trans transfer case and engine never got replaced. I never dared pull that engine out though😂
I've got a couple of special tools you can have! Front main seal installation tool, and the tool that holds the flexplate teeth. The torque on the front balancer bolt is crazy! It's like 160 ft lbs then 180 degrees! That flexplate tool is almost necessary.
Edit- saw the P.O. Box, will hopefully get it to you before you need it, but maybe someday you'll need them!
Might have an easier time finding a long block then the parts to rebuild this one. Just make sure to get a high volume oil pump. Rebuild this one in the winter as a spare and content, once all the parts get in.

That engine is done for. After as many years of doing this kind of work and the time involved to get it back together as you wait for a machine shop to give you the news that your crank is just a core, the rods have been compromised, the end thrust on the crank is into the block, valve guides are probably not going to hold well from heat and two dissimilar metals make it un guaranteeable... been there and gone through this kind of heart aches. Personally a long block or a engine you can hear run from a take out... not a first choice yet if enough paperwork came with it. Was that a book or a sentence. Please consider another engine as you guys do get every mile a rig can offer provided someone doesn't back over this truck. I pulled up on my logging landing and a skidder operator blasted out of the brush near it, I had just stepped out or he would of nailed me as it hit the drivers door. Of course this was many years ago and I was you kids age..... respectively your full grown adults and not any meaning of dissent intended. After all, Mr. Trump survived someones horrible idea he would fix stuff and guaranteed our Mr. Trumps victory. Maybe with runaway inflation under control, a man who knows business like no ones business can get things moving again. For the time being, Get Robert, (Dad) a E-bike and see what electric bikes plug into in the field. I have not heard bad things about these engines or other as I have left the field of wrenching many years ago. I would go to a engine supplier of reputable works and price against a new reman from the dealer. Your prices at a dealership should give you quite a bit of leverage on prices... A regular warranty and those extended ones are really never what you hoped for. I do not advise using a bigger engine or any other than what they come with. You just did the Pete and seen how many changes from year to year on a commercial rig. Pickups were changed on the line as the build sheet said and then wired accordingly. It just gets really ugly in my thoughts. One other thought is parking it till later and getting another rig for time being yet coming back to a rodents nest is not my idea of a good day. Peppermint oil men! Rodents hate the stuff and everyone likes a peppermint stick at christmas. A occasional shot of that peppermint oil inside the truck would help some, tractors also

Be careful who you buy a reman engine from my father in law decided to go that route because it was "quicker" than me rebuilding his. His was a 4.3 out of a Astro van. I pulled the old engine and installed his reman he made it 12 miles before it chucked a rod. So I pulled the reman and they gave him a warranty engine. It was plum full of rust so we declined it. The company he went through decided to go with a different reman company and he got about 600 miles out of that reman. The company only allowed for 1 warranty engine. So after fighting with them for almost 6 months with no engine and no refund I went to the junkyard and bought a 4.3 and rebuilt it in about a month and a half machine work always takes forever. It took him a year to get a refund so his van that he used for his construction company would have been down for a year and a half by the time he got his refund if i wouldn't have just built a engine for him. We live not far from you in Idaho so depending on what you decide to do just be sure to ask where the reman engine is coming from our Napa auto parts store and autozone and O'Reillys all get their reman engines from the same company. So if you go that route be careful and look the engine over very carefully. Best of luck
Man I have went both ways. Rebuilt a few. Bought the long block rebuilt . parked it and bought a nicer one the same age so I could part it to death until I was tired of changing parts. All good options and pretty much equally as expensive. Never asked Elon for a replacement but sounds like that could be most expensive and least effective! Good video. You asked for opinions. I believe this is what I would do. I am 50-50 divided between getting a new engine with warranty and all the parts OR replacing the pickup all together.
Believe first I would see what is available in the area on a nice used pickup.
Then I would see what a new engine would cost me with all the pieces I need.
THEN compare the two costs and evaluate which way to go.
More thoughts on the engine. I would definitely go with a new complete engine with all the parts. That way you are not hanging old parts on a new engine. I would not take old parts and make them work on a new engine.
See what the two differences are cost wise. And go from there.
Is the rest of the pickup in decent shape?? If not I would lean towards just replacing the pickup.
Both Nick and Scott had problems with replacement engines if I remember correctly.
I have no idea what your area is like for a decent used pickup. I am in central Iowa and I looked at pickup availability. Appears lots of used pickup’s on the market. Might be the same in your area??

I'd find a engine in a wrecker tho the change of the same issues are there
If you fixed the old one there isn't any cam bearings
You'd probably be safer to buy new rods and see if the crank might just be able to be polished
Yearly reminder to please check your overhead cable on your hydraulic lift and lube/grease/inspect the parts. Rainman Ray here on UA-cam just had one snap this week that could have ended far more badly.
I still think a Cummings swap would be worth it!

Jasper or a crate motor with warranty, but remember if you do make sure to get it complete so if the water pump or anything else goes bad and causes significant damage it will be covered by warranty, otherwise the warranty may not be worth much
I had a 2007 ford ranger with a 4.0 litre engine same sort of scenario. I went with a reman crate motor with warranty. Best money I ever spent.

When the 4 cylinder in my GMC Canyon gives up like that I am doing the 5.3 swap. You dont need to sawsall it. The 2010-2012 came from the factory with the 5.3. It is a bit pricey, but those Atlas engines that cane with the trucks arent really worth rebuilding as they have quite a few issues.

All points made are valid. Let me give you a perspective from the viewpoint of having years of experience running a fleet of thousands of vehicles and what I would take into account to help me form the best decision for a vehicle.
When you want to discuss costs, the cheaper option upfront will naturally appear to be the Budget DIY rebuild option….but that is taking and rebuilding a high mileage engine with now a known and very visible evidence of a hard life and lack of maintenance under previous ownership.
So first issue to consider is if you do DIY fix this -how far into it will you end up going. The overall condition of this engine and vehicle for that matter will suggest that financially by the time the parts and labor are added up to get it back up and running, it is essentially not far off the option to simply drop in a new crate motor.
Now depending on how far into the rebuild you get, the next question is once it is up and running again (doing it on the cheap), how long will it last before additional repairs are required….hence adding more money and labor time spent on an even higher mileage engine at that point.
While it may appear the DIY repair is the more economical route to go, it is infact always more likely to be far costly during the ownership life time of the vehicle.
The most important cost people forget to assess before they decide to go for one solution over another is the Opportunity Loss Cost associated with the vehicle being not useable - not just now, but in the future when it breaks down again. What amount dollarwise do you value your labor at? In this video you have three people fully and partially involved in the engine tear down…. that is all a cost to be associated with the repair both now and in the future. Time is money.
The wiser option and cheaper over longterm ownership will be to simply replace the motor. Not only will the motor be new/rebuilt crate motor, it will have a warranty - something your own DIY work will not have. It will come from a supplier that has every machine and tool required to make the engine and if things go wrong you have a warranty to fall back on.
Now if you are concerned with Crate engine costs, then drop a 4 cylinder in and have both an economical engine and cheap running costs due to the efficiency of the motor. If you need HP, then you go for a basic V8 with a carb - no electronics required apart from basic power to start, so no ECU issues or wiring loom issues. If anyone has the ability to rebuild an engine, they also then have the ability to wire it.
This is a nothing fancy/special POS truck, it has had a hard life with lack of maintenance. Cheapest option is a similar junkyard engine swap. But if they want YT content - then drop a decent Crate Motor in (episode revenue should easily cover costs).

Owned a 2005 Colorado at one time and regret selling it. Was a handy truck. Mine was a 4 dr, 4 x 4 with the 5 cyl. I would find one of those engines as I imagine the 4 banger would lack power.
Don't forget the spray foam, with the zip ties & duct tape! 🤔🤨 Seems to be the preferred go to, on just rolled in's channel.

Honest with you when you got it tore down that far I would go ahead and change out the timing chain and gears water pump and oil pump on that particular GM motor
Bailing wire was used in my day to fix a lot of issues.

350 Chevy and adaptor kit for motor mounts and get different trans and drive line
Cost will be a major determining factor.
Overhead valve four cylinder, if it were me I would have to go with a new crate engine if available.
Second I would try a reman BUT it would have to be a very reputable source with excellent references.
Third I would have this engine rebuilt. At least then you would know what you have.
Fourth quick& easiest would be find a junkyard motor & put it in. That can go well just as easy as it couldn’t, then you’re stuck with two junk motors.
Black as a deisal motor, definitely lack of maintenance in that first 80,000mls.
My vote, get a long block.

I have a good engine shop near me so I would have the block bored, if it needs it. I'd reuse the rods and crank. The head looks good to me but I'm not there to see it first hand. I'd measure the lobes to see how much wear. Pull the cam caps and check the wear. I've had some reman stuff that was junk. Buyer be ware.

Buy used engine or long block and move on. All depends on how cheap you want to be. My mom cheap with cars I got her to buy 1999 4x4 Ford Ranger for 900 dollars with bad engine. Dad had auction car Ford Sable with 30k miles. Took 3.0 V6 out, changed head gaskets to RWD engine and stuffed it in. Poor truck tired and rusty after 15 years. Transmission flares 1 to 2 shift which most did never figured it would have lasted this long LOL. We do oil changes, brake, change anti-freeze and other things. When we took engine out of Sable it had rust in block and heads but we cleaned it all out.. Had zero issue with rust in coolant until last 10 months. Get phone call either my brother or me I have no heat fix it. Mom got her money worth and time for new car

My colorado had the 3.5 L (5cylinder) when it thought it should send a rod through the side of the block , I went an got a 327ci 5.3 L with the transmission an just shorten the drive shaft . Wow that was a truck . It was cheaper then a crate engine.

Municipalities could order those with the V8. When I lived in Lubbock, the city water department had extended cabs with the V8, don’t remember if it was 4.8 or the 5.3, but it will fit.
New short block……or go big, new crate motor. Isn’t great to have the boys help. You the man for taking this on in your chop!
Put in a Fairmont Put Put. LOL It's a two seater and people can't buy those and want dollars for them. Get a reman engine, I think youll save money. Order some really good oil. Penzoil, or better. Buy oem oil filter too, it will protect best. This will last for a long time. Best to you Bob, Your truck and your family, and your crop!
You could go the "Robot Cantina" route and replace that engine with a Harbor Freight Predator motor or a Kubota 3 cylinder diesel? 🤔
Truck value vs cost of repair, if it is farm truck and you like the comfort and suspension is good, I would rebuild the engine.

Honestly, best thing, scrap it, and just spend the money on a newer one. Even if you went with an already reman engine, you're still looking at the same issue(s). Reason being, even if rebuilt, there's still no guarantee it will be 100%. I've seen reman engines fail within just a few 100 miles, yes, you have warranty but, you're right back to where you are now. Tough decision to make, just something to think about. Cheers :)

Bob what engine is that? Will a 5.3 l. go in there? 4 cyl is a bit light for farm use. and should try some of that nice clean Case IH C rated oil in the next one. Looks like that got an oil change every 5 yrs if it needed it or not. I guess that must be a Colorado.
