Sail Life - Painting the hull of my sailboat with Perfection Pro
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 жов 2024
- After months of fairing and prep work, it's finally time to paint the hull of my sailboat. I'll be using International Perfection Pro. A paint that can be applied by roller (no tipping needed) and will leave an amazing finish. Ava and I have chosen Mediterranean White for the hull.

Wow. What a difference. 'Shiny' is the right word. She looks great.
And that idea of using a spotter is a great one, I shall definitely be using that technique.
Great job Mads.
Thank you so much, Paul! :)
@@SailLife *_ UHM, Mads, forgive me for asking but I couldn't help noticing some sort of "Invisible" tape on your Cheeks at the ending of your vid..... is that some sort of DIY Facelift? :>} _*
This is the greatest sanding channel on UA-cam
"Somewhat extensive refit" 😂 understatement of the year haha
of the last 4 yrs :-))
@@iainlyall6475 Basically there was a boat, then Mads took the inside out of it and rebuilt it. Then he took the outside off it and rebuilt it. Then he took the inside out of it and rebuilt it again :)
So presumably Life on the Hulls is doing a "full refit"?
It started as a giant pile of fibreglass coth and expoxy but after the refit it will be a yacht!
EVERY boat always turns into more work than people perceive . That said he really hasn't gone extensive as the structure etc was all the same he just added more to it. Still way easier than a lot of boats as his was pretty nice to start with.
"If we do another refit ...." Everyone knows that in 10 years Mads will be doing a "small" refit on a neglected 72 foot 3 mast schooner.
10 years? I'd bet Mads is already looking.
It scares me a little to think about :P!
Only took 4 years to find the next boat 😂
Welcome aboard good ol' Unnamed Sunfish, I am now 7 days into a somewhat extensive refit. Today I applied gelcoat to the repair that I spent the last three days patching, and fairing, and it promptly rained. I can feel nothing but my throbbing shoulder from five days of oh glorious sanding and I blame it entirely on this channel.
We can't get enough of the glorious sanding show.
Mr. perfection pro ....that would actually be a nickname that fits you well. Awesome job Mads!
I would never believe MADS make up would up set the paint finish ,you learn something new every day.Considering it is being painted out side with no covers over it and by hand ,so far amazing
Is it just me, or does Mads have a "Vegas Elvis Presley" thing going on at 11:45?
Dear lord, I can't unsee it ! lol
The Elvis of Denmark...that does have a nice ring to it 😉😁
@@SailLife Ha! You're on to something for sure.
"A hunka hunka burning Perfection Pro"? Thank you, thankyouverymuch!
Haha, I paused the video and scrolled down, because surely somebody else must have already made a comment about this 😁
What a great channel and nothing more enjoyable than watching you sand while having a beer. Great to see the boat looking so spiffy. Please include more Danish swearing, I think it is very poetic!
Complete NOVICE !
You are our GURU
We all await you giving up the day job
A dorky hat is better than sunburn or skin cancer. Nice job Mads.
As a new viewer, I appreciate the recap portion of this video!
Might be about the best rolled-on paint job I saw so far in my boatbuilding career. Just imagine how hot she would've come out in a royal dark blue applied in this epic quality! Anyway, besides of the colour, that kinda paint job really turns up anxiety levels a couple notches when it comes to tank piers, poles, and neighbours sporting a lesser paint perfection 😂
I love the moment you take the sunglasses off. Nice wardrobing.
Ha ha, love the Elvis look just before painting, I hope the cans were 'all shook up' lol
I'm trying to understand how Mads manages to make an 18 minute video that seems to last only 5 minutes.
It's called "time and relative distortion technique". Involves lots of glorious sanding and repeating the word "Spiffy" lots of times.
Looks Fantastic! For a "complete novice" you are doing a lot of things ten times better than some "pros". When you are cooking in the sun, If that painters hat is cotton, dunk it in water, squeeze out the excess and put it back on. Trust me. try it.
Every Sunday makes me smile.
Looks great Mads. 100 of hours of preperation has paid off. You both should be very pleased. You did look like a Eurovision pop star with the mike in hand and sunglasses at one point in you vid. Well done mate
Perhaps a tip to anyone else painting with a spotter... maybe using using a laser pointer instead of a piece of wood. I was imagining that stick accidentally gouging the new surface. Looks great!
Mads, You sir are a sandaholick, and a very good one. Nice job on the paint application and thanks for the spotter eyes in making the total job “spiffy “!!!
If you ever get to Lake Michigan, I would love to buy you and your bride Eva dinner and an adult beverage at the Pentwater Yacht Club. Anxiously awaiting your next project and adventure... please keep away from contact with sandpaper 😂
I got the chills seeing that first coat. Congratulations Mads. You are an inspiration.
Thank you so much 😀 I'm so excited to finish the hull!
+Dennis Keohane: Not only is he an _inspiration_ ...
Gonna go out on a limb here and "bet," while _frocked out_ in his sanding & painting "suit," Mads is literally little more than *numerous liters* of *_perspiration_* ! 🤣🤣🤣
Great painting job for such a *_dorky dude_* ! 😝 (You said it, not me...)
In any event, here's to ya Mads! And here's your well deserved *_BIG_* 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻!
Very, very SPIFFY!!!
BTW, the Gilligan look from Gilligan's 🏝 is GOOD!
Nice sunglasses Mads good that you protect your eyes from the sun ! Safety first !
There are lots of things I have been impressed by in your numerous videos. I'm pretty handy and I hope I might be able to learn many of the same skills you have but I really don't think I could match your work ethic. You are clearly very driven to a clear goal (which I know you have now achieved) and I admire your dedication to your project enormously.
I'm looking forward to seeing how you and Ava get on now the DIY is complete (enough for the time being) and you are sailing. Good luck to all three of you.
Hey Sandy or Hey Dusty your faired deck joint job is pro plus work! Absolutely perfect!!! The job came out very good! Your deck joint was perfect the hull was very good. I kept seeing the latter falling scraping the hull. eeeewwwwoooccchhh
You are a driven individual.
You're persévérance and determination has no bounds, Bravo!
Oooo Shiny... Looks amazing. All those hours of work really pay off in the end.
You know what? I sincerely miss the outtakes. Now those were funny.
She looks pretty darn spiffy!!! Well done.
My experience with International paints up in North Queensland, Australia was that the paints were native bee magnets. I’m not talking one or two had at least 50 stuck in the paint after I gave up pulling them off, they had foot prints for around100 mm trailing behind every bee once they walked that distance they were stuck and I had to sand out for my next coat. Went and built a huge mosquito net around and over my build, the bees would crawl around looking for holes even had to put pieces of steel box section on the bottom to keep them out and still some got in every coat. Melbourne Distrubitors said they never heard of the problem before which I can’t believe. Definitely won’t be using International on my next build, can do without the extra work building a bug proof building. Really enjoying your work and you uploading your endeavours.
Wow, this is freaking awesome 👏. You make me think 🤔 doing this in 2021 to my little SV Queen Bee too. You’ve deserved huge respect ✊ mate.
Bravo for including your parents... I'm taking care of mine and there comments is not always 'evident'
That picture of you after you take your glass off, post sanding, should be your Christmas card
Great video, I’ll remember that patience is key.
Having owned and worked on sailboats for some 40 years I have to tell you that your level of craftsmanship and attention to detail is very impressive.
Wow, that finish looks awesome! You should be proud.
What an awesome achievement. Looks GREAT Mads.
Very cool collab with Jason. Totally interesting and valuable tips.
She looks like a brand new boat! Amazing work Mads!
Are you serious...
She IS a brand new boat!
WOW! It is always the end bits... not that you are even close to the end... however, it is looking amazing! NEXT TIME YOU FIT A LARGER BOAT????????????? By that point, you'll need a white padded room to match the white straight jacket that matches your white new Hat. You're doing great Madds!
BEAUTIFUL!!!! also, more about your parents please!
that top coat looks Spifftacular Mads!
Oh man I was so looking forward for some oh glorious sanding techno at 11:45.
WOW!!! ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL! GREAT WORK!
holy smokes, what a good-looking boat! The aerial shots are so rewarding to see, and all I've done is sat on my couch and watched your videos every week. I can't imagine how great it must feel after the hard work and patience you've invested!! Keep it up, Mads!!
Refitting a bigger boat?!
Mads in 2035...so I am ten years into a somewhat extensive refit...
(I wouldn't have a problem with that, more sunday evening routine for years to come)
Beautiful Mads! It's going to be looking so good, you might not want to get her wet.
Wow Mads, what a beauty. You did a magnificent job !!!!!
So shiney! She looks magnificent
Wow. Here it is early on Sunday afternoon (4pm MDT) and there are already 27,698 loyal viewers! Athena looks really spiffy and you have every right to be super proud of her. Congrats Mads.
Thats the best elvis i have ever seen.
Anywhere you go, there will always be crappy weather. The only way to guarantee the ability to apply paint at any time is indoors, provided you can afford the space and equipment to keep the temperature and humidity right.
That being said, no one doing a DIY refit can completely afford a perfect location. We do what we need to do to get the job done! Weather is an inconvenient burden, it has spoiled my summer schedule for my projects. I live in Northeastern US and wish I had a garage right now.
I used a similar product, rolled and tipped with a brush. It looked pretty average straight after application, but the next day looked like a spray job. Incredible paint technology! I learned a trick recently for removing the 'yellowing' that happens just above the waterline over time. Use grapefruit (the big oranges, not the one you stand on to make wine!) cut in half and rubbed over the yellowing and rinse off. I guess it is the citric acid that does the trick.
You don't look like a giant dork, just a glorious dork!
Yep, it looks pretty dang spiffy, Mads! Great job!👍
That is a totally different boat (speaking of the outside) than it was 4 years ago. Great work!
😎👍🏻
right? amazing transformation
She’s looking beautiful
Friken awesome doesn't even cover it! That is going to look absolutely fantastic Madds!
Dr. Glorious strikes again!
Nice job man!
Thanks again!
Hi Mads. Been following you for probably 3 years plus - saw you install your first fridge in Athena. Have to say I love your vids. I hope you share as much technical information (eg passage planning) when you go sailing with Eva as you do technical information re the rebuild as I love the way your brain works and you explain things so clearly. PS - Your English is so fluent - amazing. Thank you!
Great editing. SMOOTH SAILING TO YOU!
Great progress Mads. You have had some weather this summer for sure! I'd have myself a beverage of choice after that last coat of paint! The bell is still rung, but I am no longer getting notifications from UA-cam channels, so I'll make note not to miss next weeks offering. Good luck with the weather. Regards, Solomon
Looking super dang spiffy Mads 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻🤙🏻
Nice one Mad, realy , that boat is gone be the best looking boat on the water near you, its gone win the concours d'elegance, I'm sure, but the fenders gone like that shiny paint job.
Conclusion, perfection is a good given thing, but keep in mind, this boat gone sail, not standing in a museum. Great job so far Mad ;o).
Cheers.
She's looking gorgeous
Very nice paint work and very well done Mads, good on you sir and yes Athena is looking great!
Athena looks amazing, Mads!
Yes Mads, that hat might make you look like a giant dork, but we love you just the same
A great paint job is 95% prep. Now you've got a beautiful boat!
Well said. I would have put it closer to 99%. If you don't put in the time you won't care for the shine.
Very happy for you Mads. The boat looks great!
Boy that looks nice and by a roller!
Just a killer job on that Mads! Well done
Great job. Next year when everything is hardened and used a bit you can go over with rubbing/polish + wax, and it will be perfectly smooth and shiny. There’s most likely going to be spots that will lose its shine more quickly until you’ve used it a season. Especially where you got fenders etc.
And yes - Been bad weather here in Norway as well.
Good job mate - she is looking super spiffy!
So lovely to have the help from mum and dad :-)
The paint looks amazing. That drone flyover was amazing!
I have been watching your videos for 3 years,. You are inspiration to all DIY guys. Keep the good work!
Enjoyable Video! Sand on my friend!!!
I had to immediately rewind the video to see the drone shot of Athena some more times, wispering "Wowwww!" again and again. Also, the new intro is a good one.
Looks Awesome Mads. Excited for you...
WOW! Far beyond Spiffy. Well Done................>
Congratulations Jason it looks amazing!
Congrats, you are now qualified for the title of; Sandman!
Very nice glossy hul, bravo Mats
WOW! I've been following since you were working on Oblix. You've done a fantastic job. WOW!
Super job Mads! Looks fantastic!
Wow!!!! She looks frickin awesome!
Looking very good Mads. Well done.
awesome job on the paint, Mads it really do make Athena pop.
Congratulations, what a milestone!
Excellent result spifftacular.
Nice beanie hat🤣👍😎
😁
Congrats on the paint job! Looking very spiffy indeed.
Great Job! Just one more tip ... Try to remove all of the water line masking tape prior to the painting . it really helps to do this when the paint is still wet as it doesn't leave any paint tears marks. The down side to this the necessity to mask the hull for each layer of paint, but the end result is PRO .
Looks like “Perfection Pro” Paint is a winner or at least with mads using it!
Super-spiffy, totally amazing!
It is terrific that International provided the paint and Jason provided insight on how to use it. Great job!!!! This was a wonderful advertisement for their paint. It looks beautiful.
Great video, I thought I saw Elvis!
Did the job over the last weeks with great results got inspired by the video.
She looks so good Mads!
Another boat Mats!!?????
Paint job looks amazing .. well done.
