A+. IMO this is the ONLY video which shows all of the steps required to change the plugs on the F-series N55's. Other videos show how to get it done without removing the strut brace and the associated parts but there's a greater risk of crossthreading the plugs in the back. One quip, the bolts on the strut brace are single use. New bolts should be torqued to 56nm + 90 degrees. Yes, I know the dealer techs will sometimes reuse the bolts
@@pwon some bolts are meant to stretch which makes them kind of a one time use thing as the first stretch keeps the hold tighter and if you reuse it it doesn’t really have the same grab
Love the video. Pretty straightforward procedure. Naturally, the tip of one of my coil packs broke off inside. It was stuck on the plug. Luckily it was only rubber and took about 20 minutes to get it out. WD40 was my saving grace along with some long handle needle nose pliers. Also not freaking out. haha So just an FYI for you guys with the higher mileage n55's. This can happen. I'm currently sitting at 175 k miles. So it may take quite a while for some of you to get to this point. Haha
As others have stated, this is a great video that shows all of the steps needed. This is the 1st time I've changed them on my '12 335i and it went pretty smoothly despite some small hiccups on my end. Any chance for a coolant flush video for an N55/F30. Thanks again, Bryan.
Update: Did this 2 days ago on my wife’s 2015 335i M Sport. My dealership wanted $568.00, so I purchased the plugs from the parts department using a BMW CCA discount and paid $103.00 for Bosch plugs, ordered a 12 point 14 mm deep socket from FCP Euro and finished the job in 90 minutes using this video as a guide. A few notes... I thought about not taking the strut bars off and trying to get to plug # 6, but Brian’s method was much easier. Plus, with the strut bar off, I was able to stick my shop vac nozzle into each spark plug well to vacuum out the small amount of carbon that eventually falls of either the plug end or threads themselves which you will see sitting at the bottom of each spark plug well. I couldn’t find my feeler gauge and assumed they were gapped correctly,(car started and runs much smoother) followed by lightly coating the Ceramic portion of the plugs with Dielectric Grease to eliminate any possible arcing. We left the next day on a 260 mile soccer trip and the car definitely runs smoother with my wife noticing there isn’t any cold start/acceleration hesitating any more. I hope that helps others.
i’m a little confused on what spark plug socket you used. I’m trying a 14mm on my spark plugs but it won’t catch. Is there a specific brand that i need to be getting?
We actually developed a specific spark plug tool! Check out the link in the description or reach out to our guys at INFO@KIES.COM and our team will help you out 💪
Hey Brian, love your channel! U taught me a lot since I started watching honestly and saved me some money! So for that sir, I thank you. Side note: how can I find the torque specs for any bolt? Is there a guide I can use or a formula I dnt know about? Any input would be seriously appreciated!
My race BMW mechanic saitheth " BMW wants you to change coils at 80k+. If you change plugs around 50, which they also suggest as a prevenative, then they get to do the plugs again at 80k! We are doing my plugs and coils at 58k.
Hey Brian, Do you have any recommendation on magnetic swivel socket for spark plug changes? Trying to get a good quality with reasonable pricing from Amazon. Thanks!
Will do the plugs this weekend. Are the coils a necessary replacement considering there are no issues? 90% highway driving at 100,000 on my 2014 335i GT xDrive. Can they be just as easily done at a later time? What about a software update? That is something the dealer is telling me to do.
I tried doing this, got my spark plug socket stuck in the ignition chamber, cant get it out. When I turn the ratchet to the left it gets loose, then hard, then really hard, then loose again. NEED HELP PLEASE. The socket cant even be pulled out of the chamber.
My 340 xdrive is stock, so is Bosch still the recommended plugs to use? Tried calling my local dealer to find out and they said they use Champion, NGK, an Bosch. So just want to confirm what’s recommended specifically for my car
Can worn spark plugs cause knocking? On my code reader for my f30 335i it says super-knocking, cylinder 6: injection switch-off, permanent injection deactivation, injection switch-off please help!
I have the same car, and just changed the plugs with OEM from BMW, I did not checked the gap as I understood they are already gapped, but I experienced some misfire cyl 5, I clear the code with carly, car runs fine but as soon as I give more gas or try to push the car on sports mode, the engine jerks a bit can this be a misfire as I'm not getting any alrms codes or anything even when I do a scan with carly. Cold start and idle car runs as normal I even drove today 300 km on comfort mode, but when I push more to overtake and engine jerks a bit. Any idvice I already ordered NGK will try if this is going to solve the problem.
Hey my torque wrench only goes to 12.2 NM but my N55 need the spark plugs to be tightened to 15NM… is it ok to just tighten them to 12.2NM or do I have to make the torque wrench click twice instead of once or…. ?????
Like he said, you can use a small dab of Dielectic grease on the inside boot of the Coils but do NOT slap some Anti-seize grease of any kind on the spark plug's grooves, its highly NOT recommended as the Bosh OEM spark plugs will not seize at all...
Annoyingly, they made the 2014 a bit more complicated than Bryan's 2013. The support bars are two pieces rather than one and I think they glued the rubber padding to the plastic cover.
Awesome! I was looking for this DIY. Quick question Bryan. The bolts that you removed for the bars to get to the rear plugs, did you torque those down or is hand tight good enough?
So the 0.032 is oke with the bosch? I’m on stage 2 and having misfire. Have bought the oem bosch plugs the remapper told me to gap them at 0.022 sud i do that or leave them at 0.032?
Hi Bryan, I drive my 328i 2015 only 4K per year. Can you advise me on a maintenance schedule that I need for my car? When to change the oil, and other things that need to be changed. Thanks
lol I put 44K on my 328 last year... Engine oil: at least once a year, even if you only drive 4K / year Brake fluid: 2 years (brake fluid is highly hygroscopic) Coolant: 5 or 6 years Cabin filter: at least once a year (those can become smelly sometimes) In your case, I wouldn't worry about transmission and differential fluid. Keep an eye on the drive belt and coolant hoses. It is always a good habit to look for any leaks in the engine bay and underneath the car. For the rest, just follow the BMW maintenance guide.
Hey Kies, i have a 2015 BM3 stage 2 FBO 335i; i purchased NGK 97506 spark plugs. Would it be best to be gapped at .0022 because of the performance mods i have? thank you.
I'm running stage 2 Bootmod3 with all the Mods for that, just did a spark plug change with the stock Bosch plugs. Would it be worth upgrading to the NGK's?
Go OEM. They're a bit cheaper and you don't get any performance out of the cooler temp AGK ones. Also gap at .032. Don't under gap or you will have cold start issues. I should know....gapped at .025 and it spat a lot. Had to redo it.
Being a noob for car repair and maintenance I believe the difference is that you only have 4 spark plugs rather than 6. Hopefully we only have the 4 that are exposed and can skip the extra steps of removing the bar in the back
I did my 2013 E93 N55 at .022. I developed a misfire after using Bosch replacement plugs. Switched to NGK plugs gapped at 0.022 and the misfire is gone.

First time DIYer and followed your video step by step and the process was as smooth as it gets. Perfect tutorial. Thank you!
kies motorsport is definitely the #1 DYI channel, definitely the best

Brian thanks for this video. I needed to change the plugs on my 330e and this video helped so much. Thank you B👊🏽👊🏽👊🏽👌🏽
Thanks a lot for this video. I finally replaced the spark plugs in my F30 engine. Took me about 2 hours. Had all the plugs gapped and tools lined up.
Thanks Brian! As always that was awesome!!! I have been waiting for this video. Bought the plugs a year ago for my N55 engine.
Thanks for the great video. I’ve been dreading changing my sparks plugs for weeks. Just ordered the parts.
Great video, do you have the torque values other than the spark plugs? Would be appreciated.
Thanks for the video. Saved $200 compared to taking it to the dealership as my car is recently out of warranty.
Thanks a lot. Change my plugs today and my 435 your video helped a lot.
Thanks. When will you upload the one for a stage 2 cars? Cause I need spark plugs asap and I’m running a statue 2.
I’m doing this Friday on my wife’s 335i. Thx for posting this.

love the f80 videos. Can you do F80 spark plugs replacement video in the future.

Awesome and well explained video.
Do you have a video talking about the vanos on an f30?
This helped me today! Awesome work and thank you!!!
Thanks Brian! I just changed my spark plugs on my 2013 f30 335ix
Did U gap at 0.32”?
Awesome! Just about the time I want to change the plugs.
Is it recommended to change coils at the same time? Or is that not really needed?
Spark plugs change every 60k miles and Coils every 100K miles.
My race BMW mechanic saitheth " BMW wants you to change coils at 80k+. If you change plugs around 50, which they also suggest as a prevenative, then they get to do the plugs again at 80k! We are doing my plugs and coils at 58k.

Thanks Brian!!! I just did this using your tutorial.
Great job..
Thanks!

@Kies Motorsports, Thank you for the video. What is the company that makes wrench that displays the amount of torque you're applying?
Newton meters? So fancy! Lol. That’s about 17 ft/lbs for the muricans. Great vid though. I’m about to tackle this on my 640.
Thank you so much bro saved me a bunch of money im doing it myself
Im glad this is my car hes working with 👌

i remember reading that for certain iridium plugs, checking the gap is not recommended; can result in damage to the plug.
These are Bosch double platinum plugs.
Just in time. Thanks

Great walk though, now that I know how to get to the back 2 plugs it will be much easier next time.
Hey Brian let's say u did use grease when changing them is that bad? What may happen because I accidentally did
Hi Bryan, do you know if these steps are the same to use on my wife's 2015 X3 35i? Pretty sure she has the same N55 engine in hers. Thanks!
My 340 xdrive is stock, so is Bosch still the recommended plugs to use? Tried calling my local dealer to find out and they said they use Champion, NGK, an Bosch. So just want to confirm what’s recommended specifically for my car

IronMan164 up to you
No. Coils are 100k miles however sometimes the boots will tear when pulling them off the plugs.
thanks my pleasant brother :)

They have to be torqued down.

I'll try to look it up. They're supposed to be torqued down AND those bolts are supposed to be replaced. Brian mentioned this in his video.
41 ft lbs + 90 degrees
@kies motorsports don't forget to gap your's to .018" to .023"
Just keep in mind that this gap is for NGK plugs.. video coming on that

What about the torque spec of the strut tower brace bolts?

Alex McCann yes
Any part number ?
What nM do you tension the E18s at? I'm doing this shortly.
Do you need a thin wall socket for this
Can the NGK plugs be used on a stock car?
I just did my spark plugs and I was like “I’m not going to drop the plastic circle”, and what happens? It disappears like my 10mm did years ago.

Bosch x NGK x Denso ?

what is the spark plug socket
Very good explanation!👌👍 At which distance do the original spark plugs have to be adjusted? Is that necessary for the original ones?
What year is a F30?

Eh? What's the torque for the bar?
Can you do a similar video for 328

Anyone else have their 335i gapped at .022?
I did my 2013 E93 N55 at .022. I developed a misfire after using Bosch replacement plugs. Switched to NGK plugs gapped at 0.022 and the misfire is gone.
Called the bmw dealership and said labor would be about $1000 with spark plugs 🤨 hilarious
Al those plastic covers pfff.....
