Long time JDM tuner here...I've always despised Bimmers, but I have to admit. I helped a buddy of mine work on his N55, and this engine is a complete effing beast. I was quite surprised on how much potential this engine has. Definitely changed my perception on the N55 and B58 engines.
N55s are fantastic, especially the EWG version they are super reliable and make good power. However the amount of money you have to sink in them to go over 400WHP is absurd. If you're going to dump that much money into one you may as well just get B58 and remap it. FBO B58 will make similar power to this car for significantly less money + you get a newer car. Only drawback imo is the sound of the N55 is so much better.
@@marniionmee2140my n55 single turbo sounded crazy . Spun rod bearing at 168k miles had the turbo kit for close to 70k miles miss the sound . Had a few b58s say mine sounded louder than theirs

Don't bother with N54. If you're buying N55 get one with an electronic wastegate. I believe anything made after 2014, but my M135i has the electronic wastegate and it's July 2013. To get mid 500whp you're upgrading the turbo to a really good one, something like PS2 or bigger, hpfp, full bolt ons (cp, intercooler, downpipe) + custom tune on ethanol. You will also need to tune the gearbox otherwise it will shit itself.
You can get a n55 for less than 10gs now specially f30s , with another 10 in mods still comes out cheaper than m2 and you get a sedan over a small compact coupe.
@@alapt2209 That's true if you want to mod it and have a need for a sedan. Power and engine hasn't been what the M2 or really any M car is about. You pay for the chassis and suspension which is even more highlighted comparing M-lites with the B58 today. I understand it has it's drawbacks.

B58 sounds almost just as good imo. Im an N55 guy myself but those B58s sound like jets.

N54 spends their 90% of their lives on jack stands. Don't do it.
