Shalom Sara! What a great study! I so enjoyed all of the study notes you read and your thoughts. Regarding the “Great cloud of witnesses” from verse 1, I believe that this is a continuation from all of the wonderful examples of faithful people from chapter 11. They are there as a witness to us of the life of faith. They ran the race with endurance, and their testimonies give us the encouragement to run the race as well with patient endurance. Matthew 24:13 says, “But the one who endures to the end, he will be saved.” I don’t believe this cloud of witnesses is looking down upon us, but again that they are there as a witness of their faith in God through their individual testimonies. They show us the race can be won through having faith, and patiently enduring. When you talked about God’s discipline, I wanted to add too that I believe God does allow things to happen in our lives to bring us closer to Him and depend on Him. I have a hard time with the thought of discipline from God, but the Bible does say He disciplines those He loves. I think it’s the process of pruning and refining us to be more set apart for Him.
